DEPARTAMENTO DE RELIGIÓN DEPARTMENT OF RELIGION Spanish-English 1 PARTES DE LA CUSTODIA 1 La custodia de la Catedral es un poema de orfebrería cuyo argumento es “la glorificación de Jesucristo Hostia”, por ello cada pieza, cada parte de la Custodia es expresión de la belleza y armonía. Inscripción en latín que recorre las cuatro caras de la Custodia como colofón a la obra. “A Jesucristo, Dios, hombre, y Rey, escondido en la Eucaristía, la diócesis de Valencia en reparación a los despojos, incendios y sacrilegios cometidos en el año 1936, da, ofrece y dedica este trono de plata, avalorado con oro, piedras preciosas, el año 1954, centenario de la definición de la Inmaculada Concepción de la Bienaventurada Virgen María”. Cuatro columnas salomónicas enmarcan el centro de la Custodia, el Viril. En los chaflanes superiores de la columna encontramos la representación de los apóstoles y en los inferiores están representados algunos de los personajes del Antiguo Testamento que profetizaron a Jesucristo. En los lunetos sobre los que se asientan las columnas están representadas cuatro escenas evangélicas. Encontramos a los 4 profetas Mayores y los 4 doctores máximos de la Iglesia en los chaflanes interiores, cercanos a Jesucristo. El nudo de la Custodia representa las virtudes teologales de Fe, Esperanza y Caridad. La Caja de cristal donde se deposita la Sagrada Forma está enmarcado en una hornacina, toda en oro, perlas y piedras preciosas sobre remates de esmaltes rodeados de rayos rematados por 26 estrellas de oro con piedras preciosas y una cruz esmaltada con abundante pedrería. El segundo cuerpo (II) está rematado con la representación de santos valencianos en torno a la Virgen de los Desamparados, patrona de Valencia. En la base de las columnas se representan escenas del Nuevo Testamento y alegorías eucarísticas. En la balaustrada encontramos santos eucarísticos. El tercer y último cuerpo (III) tiene forma de templete renacentista. En el arco central destaca la figura de Jesucristo resucitado. 1 Revista Catedral de Valencia, nº: 5, 2011, pp 48-49. Latin inscription which runs around the four sides of the Custody as the culmination of the work. “To Jesus, God, Man and King, hidden in the Eucharist, the diocese of Valencia in reparation for the offal, arson and sacrilege committed in 1936, gives, offers, and dedicates this silver throne, adorned with gold, precious stones, in 1954, the centenary of the definition of the Inmaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary”. Four solomonic columns frame the center of the Custody, the glass box. In the upper corners of the columns we find the representation of the Apostles and in the lower ones there are represented some of the characters of the Old Testament who prophesied Jesus Christ. On the lunettes on which the four columns there are four depicted scenes from the Gospels. We found the four Major Prophets and the four highest doctors of the Church at the interior corners, close to Jesus Christ. The knot of the Custody represents the theological virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity, The glass box which hosts the Sacred Host is framed in a vaulted niche, all in gold, pearls and precious stones on enamelled rivets surrounded by beams and topped by 26 starts of gold with precious stones and an enamelled cross with plenty of jewels. The second body (II) is topped with a representation of Valencian saints around the Virgen de los Desamparados, the patron saint of Valencia. At the base of the columns New Testament scenes and allegories of the Eucharist are depicted. We also find Eucharistic saints on the balustrade. The third and last body (III) is shaped like a Renaissance temple. The figure of the Risen Christ stands out in the central arch.
