In the long version of the Gospel this week, Jesus asks Peter if he loves him three times; after each re-sponse from Peter that he does, Jesus gives him the task of tending His flock of faithful. Unfortunately, this text is unclear in English. The original text, in Greek, clarifies the exchange between Jesus and Peter. In Greek, there are two words of love being used Agape (avgapa/|j) and Fileo (filw/). Agape means that unconditional love Christ has for His Church, which He has shown to us by His self-sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection by which our sins are cleansed and we are given new life. Fileo has the meaning of friendship love, the liking of a pet; or caring for a person but only to the extent that the relationship is mutually beneficial.

Jesus asks Peter the first two times if he loves him in terms of Agape (self sacrificing love), but Peter re-sponds in Fileo (friendship love). Then finally Jesus asks him that last time do you love me like a friend (Fileo) and Peter responds sadly yes, only a friend, knowing that he fails to meet His Lords expectation just like when he de-nied Jesus three times before the cock crowed. Peter still needed to learn about the truth, the light of Christ, and how to be committed; so Jesus assigns Peter with the task of serving His Church. It is doing the Lords work, which is where Peter was to learn how to Love like the Lord, agape love. We need to learn to warm ourselves with the true fire of God and love in a self-sacrificing way. If we choose to be dense like Peter and not learn from the Word of God, then Christ will put us to task. If we do not listen and commit our-selves, then we will not find peace or fulfillment in our lives; but rather, a continuous yearning and call from God to conform ourselves to our created purpose and to fulfill our potential.

Celebrate Easter’s 50 Days: Family Activities to Celebrate the Easter Season Easter is the most important feast of the Christian year—so important that the Church sets aside a seven-week season to rejoice in Christ’s victory over sin and death. How can a family sustain this “Easter spirit” of celebration all the way to Pentecost? Here are fifty ways to celebrate the fifty days. Each week, pick a few ideas that seem right for you. 1. Use a special candle at family meals to recall the light of Christ. 2. Every day, read together from the Easter story: Matthew 28; Mark 16; Luke 24; John 20-21. 3. Plan fun family activities—one for every week of Easter. 4. Put up a sign or banner that proclaims, “He is risen!” 5. Was anyone received into the Church during your parish Easter Vigil? Have them over. 6. Add an “alleluia” song—or three alleluias—to your grace before meals. 7. Put on an Easter play. Invite relatives and friends to a performance. 8. Make a poster of a life-giving cross. Add paper flowers and leaves to it throughout Easter. 9. Celebrate new life by doing something as a family to support unborn children and their parents. 10. Keep fresh flowers around. 11. Use the old Easter greeting and response: “Christ is risen! – He is risen indeed!” 12. Visit a lonely neighbor or do some other family act of kindness to express thanks for the resurrection. 13. Talk about baptism. Tell stories of family members’ baptisms. 14. Plan a family outing to a river, lake, stream, or ocean. 15. Drape your crucifixes and crosses with a strip of white cloth. 16. Make cookies in the shapes of Easter symbols. Freeze some to serve throughout the season. 17. Learn how other cultures celebrate Easter. Try out some of their customs and foods. 18. Make cards announcing the good news of the resurrection. 19. Use a special container for newly blessed water from church. Show your kids how to use holy water. 20. Throw some water balloons! 21. Listen to Handel’s Messiah and other Easter music. 22. Read about the Emmaus disciples (Luke 24:13-35); take a family walk. 23. What about a short trip to an interesting shrine or church? 24. Place a resurrection icon or picture in a place of honor. 25. Discuss what it means to be Christ’s “witnesses” (Luke 24:48)? Help each family member to see that their witness matters. 26. Wear more white, or even gold! They’re the season’s special colors. 27. Pray the Liturgy of the Hours together in the morning or evening (www.liturgyhours.org). 28. If your family likes to sing and play instruments, have people over for a musical Easter celebration. 29. Read about the disciples’ amazing catch of fish (John 21:1-14). Then go fishing together. 30. Or imitate Peter, and go swimming (John 21:7). 31. The Sunday after Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday. Explore this relatively new devotion (www.marian.org/divinemercy). 32. Talk about how the disciples hid (John 20:19) until the Spirit’s coming at Pentecost. Follow up by playing hide and seek. 33. Plant some seeds. 34. Honor the risen Lord’s mother by learning about “Mary gardens” (www.mgardens.org). 35. Read Luke 24:50-53 or Acts 1:6-11. Ask family members to imagine themselves present at Jesus’ ascension. How would they have felt about it? 36. Watch a movie with an Easter theme (For ideas, see the list from the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ Conference: www.uscbb.org/ movies/filmsforlent.htm). 37. Just before his ascension, Jesus blessed the disciples. Pray Numbers 6:24-26 together as a way of communicating his blessing to one another. 38. On Ascension Thursday, choose a family intention. Make the nine days till Pentecost a novena to the Holy Spirit. 39. Add some Pentecost red (for fire) to your Easter decorations. 40. Read Acts 2, the Spirit’s coming at Pentecost. Read it in all the languages family members speak! (See the Bible translations at www.biblegateway.com/languages). 41. Decorate a cake with Pentecost flames and other symbols to celebrate the birthday of the church. 42. Talk about the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit (see Isaiah 11 and 1 Corinthians 12; also the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1830-1832). 43. Make a Pentecost hanging or mobile that features a dove and tongues of fire. 44. Learn a prayer to the Holy Spirit to use in your family prayer time. 45. Play “twenty questions”: Have someone choose a Bible character or thing from the Easter and Pentecost stories. The group gets twenty questions (yes or no answers only) to guess the right answer. 46. List the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23; Catechism, 1832) on separate slips of paper. Have each family member randomly select a fruit to cultivate. 47. Fly a kite to celebrate the wind of the Holy Spirit. 48. Find ways to make Sunday meals special during the Easter season. 49. Continue the “special Sunday meal” tradition to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection all year. 50. Discuss why Sunday is holy (see John Paul II’s Apostolic Letter, On Keeping the Lord’s Day Holy; Catechism, 2174-2195). Decide how you can keep the Lord’s Day as a family.

Remember your Mothers, Grandmothers, Aunts and Godmother, both living and deceased, in a special way on Mother’s Day by enrolling them in our Mother’s Day Novena of Masses which begins May 11. Novena envelopes are available at the entrance of the church and in the Parish Office. Return your novena envelope with your offering to the Parish Office. The envelopes will be placed at the altar during the nine Masses of the Novena.

Dear St. Stephen's Parish members, I want to thank you all for donating and helping me reach my fund goal to get me to The Vatican and other parts of Italy with the Villanova Pastoral Musicians. It was an extremely packed week so I will just give you the highlights of each day. We flew in Saturday March 2nd and landed at 9:30 am. Directly from the airport we went to visit some of the most important church-es in Rome including Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano (St. John Lateran)--the first church in Rome, Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore (St. Mary Major)--the largest church dedicated to Mary, and Santa Cecilia in Trastevere (St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music). The next day, we had the opportuni-ty to meet with a Villanova friar, Fr. Joe, who is currently working at St. Monica's College (an Augustinian college) in Vatican City. He took us to the roof of the college where we had a great view of Pope Francis' Sunday Angelus. That evening we sang five of our pieces at the 5:00 pm mass in St. Peter's Basilica. Monday, the 4th, was anoth-er day in Rome with tours of Vatican City and St. Callixtus Catacombs in the day and our first concert at Sant'Andrea della Valle (St. Andrew of the valley). Tuesday was spent in the more rural, Assisi. Our concert that evening was at the Upper Basilica of St. Francis and other sights of the day included the place where St. Francis would go to pray and the place that he died. Wednesday was in Florence where we were able to see many Michelangelo sculptures including the David statue. Through Fr. Joe, we were able to have a private Ash Wednesday mass in Basilica di Santo Spirito. Ash Wednesday tradition in Italy includes sprinkling ash-es on top of their heads rather than the foreheads to honor those who used to repent by covering themselves with ashes the entirety of lent then washing themselves clean at Easter. The highlight of Florence and the entire trip for me was after mass, all 56 choir members went into the sacristy where the only crucifix that Michelangelo sculpted was hanging. He made it at age 18 as a gift for the Augustinian friars who, at the time, allowed Michelangelo to study anatomy within the church although it was illegal in Florence. We all stood in a circle around this crucifix and sang as song titled "Restless is the Heart". This song celebrates the Au-gustinian ideals of truth, unity, and love by using St Augustine's famous quote, "restless is the heart until it comes to rest in you". To add to this experience, Ash Wednesday and this day was also Michelangelo's birth-day, what better way to celebrate! Thursday we spent the day in San Gimignano where we sang our final mass of the week, and Friday was a free day in Venice where we got to get lost in the right way through wandering the streets and canals. All of these experiences helped me to grow in our music ministry and personally my faith through music. Thank you all again for making this trip possible! Amanda Baranowski

Quiero agradecerles a todos por donar y ayudarme a alcanzar la meta para ir al Vaticano y otras partes de Italia con los Músicos de Villanova Pastoral. Fue una semana llena, así que solo te daré los mejores momentos de cada día. Volamos el sábado 2 de marzo y aterrizamos a las 9:30 am. Directamente desde el aero-puerto fuimos a visitar algunas de las iglesias más importantes de Roma, incluida la Basílica de San Giovanni in Laterano (San Juan de Letrán), la primera iglesia en Roma, Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore (Santa María la Mayor)--La iglesia más grande dedicada a María, y Santa Cecilia en Trastevere (Santa Cecilia, la santa patrona de música). Al día siguiente, tuvimos la oportunidad de reunirnos con un fraile de Villanova, el Padre Joe, que actualmente trabaja en el Colegio de Santa Monica (un

Pasamos el martes en lo más rural, Asís. Nuestro concierto esa noche fue en la Basílica Superior de San Francisco y otros lugares del día que incluyeron el lugar donde San Francisco iría a orar y el lugar donde murió. El miércoles fue en Florencia, donde pudimos ver muchas escultu-ras de Miguel Ángel, incluida la estatua de David. A través del Padre Joe, pudimos tener una misa privada del miércoles de ceniza en la Basílica de Santo Spirito. La tradición del Miércoles de Ceniza en Italia incluye ro-ciar las cenizas sobre sus cabezas en lugar de las frentes para honrar a aquellos que solían arrepentirse cubriéndose con las cenizas toda la cuar-esma y luego lavándose en Pascua.
