Estimadas familias de Oyster-Adams,

Bienvenidos al año escolar 2018-2019. Un nuevo año escolar trae optimismo, energía y nuevo enfoque. A nuestras familias nuevas de pre-kinder y kinder, ¡les damos la bienvenida a nuestra comunidad bilingüe, brillante y eficaz!

Como comunidad, logramos cosas increíbles el año pasado. Aquí están algunos puntos destacados:

• En la lectura de inglés de K-8vo, el 90% de nuestros estudiantes alcanzaron a leer a nivel o sobre nivel de grado • En la lectura de español de K-5to, aproximadamente el 88% de estudiantes mostraron criterio de lectura a nivel de grado y/o mostraron un crecimiento de 1.5 años • 41 estudiantes de 8vo grado tomaron el examen AP de Idioma Español, ¡el mayor número de estudiantes de OA que han tomado esta prueba! Estamos orgullosos de anunciar que el 98% de estudiantes aprobaron este examen. • Al principio del año escolar el 40% de nuestros estudiantes estaban a nivel de grado en matemáticas y a fin de año el 85% de nuestros estudiantes demostraron estar a nivel o sobre nivel de grado en la materia. Esto representa los resultados de matemáticas más altos en los últimos cuatro años. • Alta tasa de reinscripción: hasta la fecha, el 94% de nuestras familias de 5to grado han elegido nuestro programa de la escuela intermedia. • Nuestros estudiantes ganaron varias categorías en la Feria de DC STEM. Nuestra escuela intermedia obtuvo la mayor representación de ganadores en el Distrito de Columbia • Los equipos de deporte tuvieron exitosas temporadas de DCIAA gracias a nuestra coordinadora del programa de-portivo, los entrenadores y los padres de familia. Estos fueron algunos de nuestros logros:

o El equipo de atletismo masculino: 1er lugar a nivel de la ciudad o El equipo de campo traviesa femenino gano el 1er lugar y el equipo masculino obtuvo 2do lugar o El equipo de futbol masculino avanzó a las semifinales a nivel de la ciudad o El equipo de voleibol femenino avanzó a los cuartos de final a nivel de la ciudad o El equipo de natación: 2do lugar en la ciudad a nivel de las escuelas intermedias. o El equipo de baloncesto intermedio masculino avanzó al campeonato de la ciudad por primera vez, llevándose el 2do lugar. o El equipo femenino avanzó a los playoffs o El equipo de baloncesto elemental femenino obtuvo el 1er lugar, siendo campeonas a nivel de toda la ciudad

Estamos muy orgullosos de nuestros logros y esperamos establecer y superar nuevas metas durante el año escolar 2019-2020.

Nuestra personal docente y administrativo se compromete a trabajar junto su estudiante este año escolar para garantizar que cada día sean mas inteligentes, sabios, bilingües y niños con más confianza en sí mismos. Esperamos que su familia haya teni-do un verano tranquilo y emocionante y esperamos ver a todos los estudiantes en el primer día de clases, el 26 de agosto, muy temprano y listos para reír y aprender junto con sus amigos. Pre-kinder tiene un horario distinto, por favor lea las preguntas mas frecuentes de pre-kinder que estarán adjuntas.

WELCOME TO OYSTER-ADAMS MEET YOUR PRINCIPAL

Dear Oyster Adams family,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! A new school year brings new focus, energy and optimism. To our newest PK and K families, we welcome you to our brilliant, powerful, and bilingual community!

As a community, we accomplished amazing things last year. Here are some highlights: • In K-8 English reading, 90% of our students met or exceeded end-of-year benchmark. • In K-5 Spanish reading, approximately 88% of students either met grade-level benchmarks and/or showed 1.5 years of growth. • 41 eighth-grade students took the AP Spanish Language exam, the most ever! We are proud to announce that we had a passage rate of 98%. • In math, 40% of our students could perform at their receiving grade level in the beginning of the year and by the end of the year 85% of our students were at or above grade level.  This represents the highest end-of-year math results in the past 4 years. • High re-enrollment rate: to date, 94% of our 5th grade families have chosen our MS program. • OA students placed in several categories in the DC Stem Fair. OA middle had the highest representation in win-ners in all of DC. • OA sports had great DCIAA seasons thanks to their athletic director, coaches and parents:

o MS boys track - City Champions o MS cross country - City Champions girls, second place boys o MS boys’ soccer boys - advanced to citywide semifinals  o MS girls’ volleyball girls - advanced to citywide quarterfinals o MS swimming (co-ed) - 2nd place o MS boys’ basketball advanced to city championship for first time (2nd place) o MS girls’ basketball advanced to citywide playoffs o ES girls’ basketball - City Champions 

We are so proud of all our results and look forward to setting and exceeding our SY 19-20 goals as well.

Our faculty and administrative staff are committed to working alongside your student this year to ensure that they are becoming smarter, wiser, bilinguals and more confident children every single day. We hope your family had a restful and exciting summer and we look forward to seeing students on the first day of school, August 26th, bright and early and ready to laugh and learn with their friends. You do not need to buy school supplies for your child. Instead, families should contribute to the OA School Supplies Fund. The teachers depend on the money from the Funds to get the right supplies at the right time and price—this guarantees that classrooms are stocked and ready to go on day one.

AFTER CAREOur after-care program is provided by Oyster CreativeActivities (OCA), a bilingual non-profi t program. Learn more on our school website or contact Connie connie@oystercreativeactvities.com. Supplemental enrichment activities and classes areavailable through OCA—and independently through the school. Kids who aren’t in aftercare may still take most enrichment activities. OCA enrichment classes start the last week of September (e.g., soccer, karate, ballet, yoga, mad science, art, etc.). Some are free and some require payment. OCA is not managed by OCC, the school’s Parent Teacher Organization.

BREAKFAST & LUNCH

BREAKFAST: FREE at both campuses from 8am-8:30am.LUNCH: Students can bring their own lunch or purchase school lunch. Parents can pay via myschoolbucks.com using the link on the school’s website. All payments MUST BE electronic. Please do not send money to school with your child.

RULES FOR DROP OFF AT OYSTER CAMPUSIf we all do our part and follow the rules, our Oyster drop off s don’t have to be an added stress. First and foremost, we encourage all families who can, to walk or bike to school. This alleviates morning traffi c and is better for the environment.

There is absolutely no parking allowed in two places at Oyster until after 9am: the driveway (used for morning drop off s only) 29th street directly in front of the driveway (used for school buses for students with special needs).

Cars must pull all the way up toward the exit of the driveway. Do not stop in front of the school and do not turn off your engine for any reason.

From 8:20-8:45am, a staff member will be present to make sure students exit cars and walk toward the school entrance—on the sidewalk. This staff member can also assist in opening doors and helping Tigers out.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD CARS BE LEFT PARKED OR UNATTENDED.

THEY WILL BE TICKETED AND TOWED.

There are no left turns coming out of the driveway- those who wait for the left turn inconvenience the entire community and

are breaking traffi c laws. If you want to walk your child inside the school or visit the front offi ce for any reason, you cannot use the driveway. You will have to come early enough to fi nd appropriate

street parking.

RULES FOR DROP OFF ADAMS CAMPUSDrop off on 19th St. entrance. Do not double-park. The parking lot behind the school is for staff only.

REGLAS PARA DEJAR A LOS ESTUDIANTES EN EL PLANTEL DE OYSTER

Las mañanas puede ser difíciles, pero si todos ponemos de nuestra parte y seguimos las reglas, el dejar a los niños por las mañanas en el plantel de Oyster no tiene que agregar más estrés a nuestro día. En primer lugar, solicitamos a todas las familias que puedan caminar o venir en bicicleta a la escuela que lo hagan. Esto aliviará el tráfi co de la mañana y ayudará a nuestro medio ambiente.

•Absolutamente NO está permitido ningún estacionamiento en los dos siguientes lugares de Oyster hasta después de las 9 AM:1) El camino de entrada de carros (es utilizado para dejar a los niños por las mañanas solamente)2) La calle 29 directamente en frente de la entrada de carros (es utilizado por los autobuses escolares para los estudiantes con necesi-dades especiales)Para dejar a los estudiantes durante la mañana, todos los coches deben conducir hasta el fi nal de la calzada o salida. Los coches no se pueden detener frente a la escuela y/o apagar el motor bajo ninguna circunstancia. Cada mañana de 8:20-8:45 am, hay un miembro del personal que ayuda a que los estudiantes bajen de sus autos y caminen de manera segura por la acera hacia la entrada de la escuela. Un miembro del personal abrirá la puerta del auto y ayudará a que baje nuestro pequeño tigre o tigresa.

BAJO NINGUNA CIRCUNSTANCIA SE PERMITIRA DE-JAR CARROS PARQUEADOS O DESATENDIDOS.TODO AUTO BAJO ESTAS CIRCUNSTANCIA SERÁ MULTADO Y

REMOLCADO.

Por favor, tenga en cuenta que la salida de los carros tiene una señal que indica que no se está permitido girar a la izquierda - los conduc-tores que esperan para hacer una vuelta a la izquierda incomodan a nuestra comunidad y violan la ley de tránsito.Si usted quiere entrar con su hijo/a a la escuela o visitar la ofi cina por cualquier razón, usted no podrá utilizar la entrada de coches. REGLAS PARA EL PLANTEL DE ADAMSDejar a los estudiantes en la entrada principal de la calle 19. El estacionamiento en doble fi la está expresamente prohibido a lo largo de la entrada. El estacionamiento detrás de la escuela es sola-mente para el uso del personal de OA.

No necesita comprar útiles escolares para su hijo o hija. En lugar de ello, las familias deben contribuir al Fondo de útiles escolares de OA. Los maestros utilizan el dinero del fondo (dividido por clase según lo que los padre hayan contribuido) para conseguir los útiles más adecuados en el momento pre-ciso y al precio adecuado, logrando que los salones tengan buen inventario y estén listos para iniciar sus actividades el primer de clases.

ACTIVIDADES PARA DESPUÉS DE LA ESCUELANuestro programa de cuidado después del fi nal del horario de clases es proporcionado por Oyster Creative Activities (OCA) o Contacte a Connie via al correo:connie@oystercreativeactvities.com, un programa bilingüe sin fi nes de lucro. Actividades complementarias y clases o talleres específi cos también se ofrecen a través de OCA, así como de forma independiente a través de la escuela. Los niños que no están formalmente registrados en OCA todavía pueden inscribirse para actividades específi cas. Las clases de enriquecimiento de OCA comienzan la última semana de septiembre e incluyen actividades tales como fútbol, karate, ballet, yoga, robótica y más. Algunos son gratuitos y otros requieren pago. La administración de la escuela enviará en forma aparte la información para registrarse. OCA no es administrado por OCC.

ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL BY GRADEBACK TO SCHOOL

ELS/PRE-KStudents and parents are welcome to sit in the hallway outside of the classroom no earlier than 8:20am. Books are provided in baskets near the classroom for you to share with your child. 8:20am: Instructional assistants supervise children in the hallway.8:40am:Teachers will open the classroom doors. 8:45am: Instructional time starts.

KINDEREnter school through the front doors and report directly to the cafeteria where teachers & staff will be present. 8:30am: Teachers, assistants and students begin to line up. 8:35am: Line up and walk to classrooms with teachers. 8:45am: Instructional time starts.

Parents should say their goodbyes in the cafeteria. After 8:40am please allow the school staff to focus on children.

Some students will cry the first day of school: this is normal and our teachers and aides are highly trained in getting them to relax and en-joy the first day of school. If your child is crying, following them up to the classroom will not stop them from crying and they will likely cry as you leave. Please rest assured that they will have a great day playing

and getting to know their new friends!

Parents should say their goodbyes on the soccer field during the first week. After 8:40am please allow the school staff to focus on children.

Scores Are Up–Double digits gains in reading & math PARCC scores! • Best in City–OA has highest performing 8th grade readers in the city (DCPS or charter)! • Shrinking Achievement Gap–Reading achievement gap is narrowing in every sub-group; 4 years ago less than half of Black/African-American students scored proficient/advanced: now 79% are! • College- level Spanish–41 eighth grade students took the AP Spanish Language exams and 98% passed, earning college credit before even enrolling in high school!

What is the purpose of the Annual Giving Fund? The Annual Campaign is managed by the OCC, Oyster-Adams’ Parent Teacher Organization, a 501(c)(3). The OCC pays for academic programs, equipment and supplies NOT funded by DCPS.

How is money raised for the fund? Each family is asked to make a suggested donation of $400 per child. Make a one-time donation or consider a monthly contribution. Give what you can. No amount is too small (or too big!). OA needs you ALL IN. 100% in 100 days!

Is my donation tax deductible? Yes. You will receive a receipt for your tax purposes at time of contribution. If you need documentation for an employer match to your personal contribution please email treasurer@oysteradams.org. We’ll be happy to help you!
