  • From the Pastor’s Desk Del Escritorio del Pastor

    Dear parishioners and friends:

The Beautification of our Parish Shrine

One of my goals as pastor of the parish is to enhance

awareness throughout our community and throughout

the region that our parish is an officially designated

Shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. We may be

the only “officially” designated Diocesan Shrine in the

Camden Diocese and at times I think we are the best

kept secret in South Jersey. Our Lady of Guadalupe is

the Patroness of all the Americas and the Patroness of

Life. God knows we need the intersession and

protection of our Blessed Mother. I am a frequent

visitor to the Shrines of Philadelphia, particularly The

Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal and St.

John Neumann. Every week hundreds of pilgrims travel

to these shrines to pray. When I visit those Shrines I am

struck by their beauty. One’s souls is lifted up to God

because you know you are in a place of prayer. With

these thoughts in mind, I seek to beautify our Shrine and

to enhance awareness and publicity. As you remember,

last year we had the unfortunate vandalism incident.

Generous parishioners and others donated money for the

Shrine and that money has been kept in a restricted

parish account, to be used only for the upkeep and

beautification of the Shrine. This helped us better our

sound system at St. Lawrence, and now some money

from this account will be used to beautify the Church. A

statue of St. Juan Diego, so integral to the story of Our

Lady of Guadalupe, has already been donated. Artisans

who worked on the Philadelphia Shrines I mentioned

above will help us. I ask for your patience as we

gradually, as money allows, beautify our Parish Shrine

of Our Lady of Guadalupe. I dream of hundreds of

pilgrims from all nationalities coming to our Shrine and

placing their petitions of prayer and thanksgiving before

Our Lady. As always, we appreciate and need your

prayers and support. I am confident that Mary will

continue to wrap us in her mantle of love, and lead us

and all pilgrims to her Beloved Son, Our Savior, Jesus

    Christ our Lord.

God Bless you and your family, Father Vince

    Queridos feligreses y amigos:

Padre Vicente

to the blessings we have been given. This means everyone isn’t

called to give the same amount, but is called to give equal

sacrifice. No amount is insignificant for good Stewardship. Open

Please bring diapers (larger sizes preferred) and baby wipes

to the baskets provided at both churches.

(Luvs diapers are preferred due to their absorbency.)

The drive benefits Sr. Helen Cole’s ministry to the moms and

babies in Camden through Guadalupe Family Services. We will

be accepting donations until the first weekend of November.

The New Jersey Assembly voted to pass the Aid in Dying

for the Terminally Ill Act during its session on October 20

and sent the bill to the Senate. This bill is set up to

allow terminally ill people the right to get drugs to end

their life. Despite the nice name, it is an assisted suicide

bill, and as such, it communicates that some lives are not

worth living. Consider what Dr. Janet Smith, a professor

of Moral Theology and full-time caretaker for her mother

with dementia over the last year said recently:

The wisdom of leaving death in God's hands is so right. If

we were to be the ones who decide, we would likely do one

of two things, both wrong. For those who suffer and whose

lives seem without value to them or others, we would likely

kill them out of a sense of mercy. There would also be

those who would keep their loved ones alive way past when

their " time had come" if they could, just to have one

more day, hour, minute to hold their hands or caress their

brow. God has reserved the time of death for Himself and

that is so clearly right to me now: that deep within the per-

son who seems to be nearly a " mere vegetable" there

may well be powerful things going on -- sorting things out,

talking with God. It is best for us not to disturb or short

circuit that process. I think all the hymns I sang and

prayers I said aloud and my talking to my mother about

    Jesus (she

wanted me to talk with her about Jesus when she could

indicate her desires - I wish I had done more of that) -- and

of heaven, were very valuable and blessed moments.

I believe they helped her " transition." (10/10/16)

Please take a moment and call Governor Christie and

ask him to veto Bill A2451/S2474.

    Holy Hour for Vocations

First Thursdays is a monthly Holy Hour for Vocations hosted by

different parishes throughout the diocese. For young men

thinking about the priesthood, it is a chance to spend time in

prayer before the Blessed Sacrament asking the Lord to make

one’s calling clear. For others, it is an opportunity to come

together and beg the Lord to bless our diocese with more priests

    in the near future.

    Please join us December 1:
