7 THE BEST SAFARI GUIDES The Wildlife Safari team

of guides, headed by

Andrew Kingori, is one of

the best in the business.

All our guides are full

time employees with an

average of fi fteen years

with the company. Every Wildlife Safari guide

has a very broad knowledge about the history,

geography, people, cultures, animals and

birds as well as being an excellent driver with

mechanical skills. Each guide has only four

or six guests for the entire safari, depending

on the type of vehicle, and provides a very

personal experience. Wildlife Safari guides

consistently score high marks in the Kenya

Safari Guides Association rankings and our

guides are in demand from repeat guests.

8 UNLIMITED GAME VIEWING As Wildlife Safari operates its own safari

vehicles we off er almost unlimited game

viewing drives. Other companies who hire vehicles and guides limit game viewing guides to a fi xed time or mileage limit. Wildlife Safari

guides discuss game viewing options that

suit our guests, not the company, and will

be happy to arrange full day game viewing

with an optional picnic lunch at some wildlife

sanctuaries. Nature walks are also included

in some locations at no additional cost.

Our guides always maintain an acceptable

distance from wildlife and avoid crowded

game viewing situations. Our itineraries have

been designed to maximize game viewing

such as Ngorongoro Crater with a special

picnic breakfast followed by a morning of

game viewing ahead of the crowds.

9 SERVICE, SERVICE, SERVICE

Wildlife Safari prides itself on providing the

best service from the time you make your

reservations to the time you board your fl ight

Your dawn game viewing drive in the Masai Mara wildlife sanctuary brings you to the banks of the Mara river where a Masai warrior is waiting to guide you to a clearing overlooking the hippo pools. Relax over a leisurely breakfast before your Wildlife Safari 4WD vehicle drives you back to your lodge.

“LUNCH AMONG THE HERDS”

Enjoy an extended day of game viewing where your Wildlife Safari guide has arranged with the chef to prepare and pack a special picnic lunch with a wide selection of cold meats, salads, breads, pastries, fruits as well as your choice of beverages. Afternoon game viewing as you return to your lodge.

“MASAI MARA BUSH DINNER”

Drive through the sanctuary, arriving at a designated location to be met by Masai warriors who escort you to your dinner table under the stars while performing their traditional songs and dance. Enjoy a sumptuous barbeque dinner with a mixed grill and selection of salads and vegetables, desserts and fruits. A full bar service is also available. Relax after dinner around the bonfi re before returning to your safari lodge while enjoying a night game drive enroute.

“THE COFFEE & TEAExPERIENCE”

Kenya grows some of the fi nest quality coff ee and tea in the world and you spend an afternoon visiting a local coff ee and tea plantation outside Nairobi where you will be guided through every step of the process from bean to cup and leaf to cup, followed by a coff ee and tea tasting session. You will receive a coff ee and tea gift pack compliments of Wildlife Safari on returning to your Nairobi hotel. This excursion requires a full day at leisure in Nairobi.

“THE AMBOSELI REFORESTATION”

Wildlife Safari & Serena Hotels launched “The Amboseli Reforestation” in 1993 with the aim of planting one million acacia trees in Amboseli and reversing the declining forests at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Every Wildlife Safari guest is invited to plant an acacia tree as part of this award winning conservation project and receive a special certifi cate as a safari momento.

“KIDS ON SAFARI”

Wildlife Safari has designed a selection of special activities for children of various ages on safari that are educational and fun, in conjunction with our major hotel partners. the best beds in eastern africa

Wildlife Safari is very particular about the hotels, resorts, safari lodges and camps where our guests stay throughout Africa, and our other destinations. There is a huge choice of properties throughout Eastern Africa of varying standards, but Wildlife Safari features only the best option at every location. Unlike most other tour companies, Wildlife Safari does not request or accept any marketing funds from any hotelier or supplier and we don’t own, manage or operate any hotels, resorts, lodges or camps anywhere, so we maintain total transparency and feature properties that are best suited for our guests, at all times. Our preferred properties are judged on location, room facilities, property amenities, cuisine standards and staff service. Our city hotels are centrally located with world class facilities while our safari lodges and camps are located in Africa’s best wildlife viewing areas. Our preferred list is reviewed regularly and Wildlife Safari is also happy to confirm other hotels at our guests’ specific request, providing they meet our minimum safety and service standards.

SERENA HOTELS is Wildlife Safari’s principal hotel partner in East Africa. Serena Hotels operate an extensive collection of city hotels, safari lodges, tented camps and beach resorts throughout Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda & Rwanda. The Nairobi Serena Hotel is the flagship of the group and is our favourite hotel in our “home” city. Serena was established during the early days of tourism in Kenya so their safari lodges in Amboseli, Samburu and Masai Mara wildlife sanctuaries are built in the best locations for game viewing. Mountain Lodge built on stilts deep in the heart of the Mount Kenya forest is a unique “tree hotel” while Serena Beach Hotel is our favourite resort on the Indian Ocean, just north of Mombasa. Serena safari lodges in Tanzania are also situated in the best locations on the Great Rift Valley escarpment at Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater rim and the heart of the Serengeti. Kirawira Camp in the Grumeti area of the western Serengeti is on the wildebeest migration path while the Zanzibar Serena Inn is housed within a resored historic building.

FAIRMONT HOTELS has acquired two iconic tourism venues in Kenya. The Fairmont Norfolk Hotel first opened on Christmas Day 1904 and has welcomed royalty, rich and famous guests for over a century. This hotel has been expertly restored to better than its original splendour and is the perfect starting point for your safari. The Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club sits on the Equator facing the snow capped summit of Mount Kenya, the second highest peak in Africa. Founded by William Holden, the Club was once Hollywood’s playground in Africa and Fairmont has transformed it into the finest country club resort on the continent. Samburu Intrepids and Mara Intrepids are two excellent “under canvas” camps in their respective wildlife sanctuaries, both built on the banks of rivers frequented by wildlife and located in the best spots for game viewing. Mara Explorer Camp is an outstanding small and exclusive camp in the heart of the famous “Mara Triangle” and it’s our favourite camp. Wildlife Safari also features a select few independent hotels, resorts and safari camps. The Giraffe Manor in the outer Nairobi suburbs is a unique boutique hotel situated in a sanctuary for the rare Rothschild Giraffe. Larsen’s Camp on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro in the Samburu wildlife sanctuary is Tom Fernandes’ favourite safari camp in Africa. We also have a selection of favourite resorts along the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya and also on Zanzibar and Lamu islands.

South Africa has a huge selection of hotels covering the entire spectrum so Wildlife Safari has created a three category hotels selection. Our Silver hotels offer excellent value without the added cost of some facilities not required by many guests. Our Gold hotels have excellent facilities and service and fit the criteria for most Wildlife Safari guests, while our Platinum hotels are iconic outstanding properties famous worldwide and for the discerning traveller. While price is the main function of our hotel categories, we also consider other criteria including location, facilities, cuisine selection and staff service standards. Our preferred list is reviewed regularly and Wildlife Safari is also happy to confirm other hotels at our guests’ specific request.

Here are just a few of our favourite hotels and resorts in South Africa. The Melrose Arch Hotel in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs is a luxury “hip” hotel offering a new and fresh guest experience with some unique twists. The Palace of the Lost City at Sun City is an iconic resort hotel, globally famous, and any visit to South Africa is incomplete without a visit to this incredible hotel and location. The V&A Waterfront is Cape Town’s best location and there are now four excellent hotels in this precinct. The V&A Hotel, the original hotel, still retains its charm and unobtrusive service. The Table Bay Hotel is a large world class hotel with all the facilities with views to both Table Mountain and Atlantic Ocean. The Cape Grace Hotel is a small, exclusive hotel that is more like a private club than hotel. The Westcliff and The Mount Nelson are iconic Orient Express Hotels that are outstanding in every aspect and a recent inclusion on our preferred list. Wildlife Safari has many other favourite hotels hotels, resorts and inns throughout South Africa.

Camp Okavango, a small tented camp on remote Nxaragha island in the heart of the pristine Okavango delta, offers game viewing by canoe along the many channels of the delta around the camp, or walking on a nearby island with an experienced guide. Camp Moremi is also a tented camp on nearby Xakanaxa lagoon within the Moremi Game Reserve.

Savute Safari Lodge is a series of glass and timber chalets overlooking a natural waterhole in an area known for “big cats” in the southern Chobe National Park. The Savute channel has recently flooded for the first time in many years, attracting a profusion of wildlife and birds. Chobe Game Lodge, the only safari lodge on the Chobe River inside Chobe National Park, conducts game viewing activities by large boat or open vehicles and is a popular combination with nearby Victoria Falls.

KAPAMA is situated in the heart of a thirteen thousand hectare wildlife sanctuary in Limpopo Province. The main lodge overlooks a tranquil lake with a deck of bird watching and guests stay in well equipped thatched roof chalets. The Drakensberg Mountains provide a spectacular backdrop to Kapama River Lodge, which is one of the largest in the Kruger region. Buffalo Camp is small and exclusive with just eight large tents on raised platforms among the treetops. The new Karula lodge is set on the banks of the Klaserie river and sets a new luxury mark.

LION SANDS is situated in the southern Kruger region and is the only property to have full access to the Sabi River. The density and diversity of wildlife within this private wildlife sanctuary is amazing and numerous game viewing activities are really the experience of a lifetime. Both safari lodges offer excellent accommodations with an unforgettable culinary experience and service at value that is second to none. There is also a historic private home for family groups.

Kruger National Park, South Africa’s largest wildlife sanctuary has a number of safari lodges built within its borders. A patchwork quilt of private wildlife concessions borders Kruger along its western boundary allowing for wildlife to move freely to and from the sanctuary. These private concessions also offer a selection of smaller lodges and camps and while there are hundreds to choose from, it’s impossible to adequately market every concession. Wildlife Safari has selected our “Big Six” private wildlife concessions covering a wide choice of safari options and budgets. Most concessions have several lodges to choose from with various rates. Other lodges and camps are available on request from Wildlife Safari.

SABI SABI is one of the finest private wildlife sanctuaries with four unique safari lodges. Bush Lodge overlooks a floodlit waterhole, Earth Lodge is an intimate property in the heart of the bushveld and Selati Lodge is designed with an early 20th century luxury theme. Little Bush Camp is a recent addition to the Sabi Sabi family. Game viewing by open four wheel drive vehicles are escorted by expert guides and trackers. Night game drives and escorted bush walks are included.

africa – Q & a

1. AFRICA – IS IT SAFE? Travel to any destination involves some risk and the countries featured by Wildlife Safari are not immune to problems from time to time. However, with forty years of experience in Africa and our policy of using only the finest accommodation and transportation means that we reduce the potential risk. Safety is always our first priority at Wildlife Safari and we will never compromise any guest, our staff or equipment for the sake of operating to a schedule.

2. IS A SAFARI PHYSICALLY DEMANDING?

Most of our safaris are not really physically demanding and feature excellent accommodation, cuisine and comfortable air and ground transportation. However, we realise that some of our guests enjoy some physical activity on safari so we have introduced some short treks, usually at no extra cost. Please inform us if you have any questions or concerns about mobility. The more adventurous traveller can climb Kilimanjaro, gorilla trek in Uganda or travel with a luxury mobile safari camp. Contact Wildlife Safari for further details.

3. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO vISIT AFRICA?

Africa is a year round destination, with a comfortable climate and excellent game viewing throughout the year. The wildebeest migration is the most famous wildlife spectacle that occurs anytime from May to October (northwards) and from December to February (southwards) but wildlife is still found in great concentrations year round. Take advantage of the “low season” months for travel as they offer excellent value for money without the crowds – that is why these months are “low season”.

4. WHAT IS THE CLIMATE LIKE?Being equatorial, East Africa has fairly constant temperatures year round with rains historically coming in April/May and November/December, although this has varied over the last few years. Southern Africa has more pronounced seasons with hot, wet summers and cool, dry winters inland. The coastal areas are reversed with dry summers and wet winters. Inland areas have relatively low humidity and temperatures drop as altitudes climb, while coastal areas are usually hot and humid. Egypt enjoys warm dry winters with hot dry summers. Humidity is low but daytime temperatures can be very high.

5. WILL I REQUIRE vISAS & vACCINATIONS?

Australians require tourist visas for Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Egypt and Wildlife Safari can provide application forms with confirmation of your safari.

Vaccination requirements vary from country to country and a travel doctor or health authority is best qualified to advise you as well as suggest your anti malaria medication.

6. WHAT ABOUT THE FOOD ? The cuisine throughout is excellent with a large menu selection at breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is a good range of beverages at all lodges. The hotels, safari lodges and camps selected by Wildlife Safari maintain the highest standards of food storage, hygiene and preparation. Our senior management conducts regular inspections of the properties that we sell and we always start with the kitchens and food areas.

7. WHAT SHOULD I WEAR ON SAFARI?

Wear comfortable and casual clothing on safari and avoid bright colours. Remember to bring comfortable walking shoes and warm clothing for nights at higher altitudes or during winter months in Southern Africa. Some city hotels and restaurants require jacket & tie for men and appropriate attire for women. Same day laundry service is available.

8. WHAT IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY?

Wildlife Safari operates a radio UHF/UNA communications system in East Africa and every vehicle keeps in contact with the base office. Cellular telephones are now widely used in Africa. The Flying Doctor Service is available in case of emergency and medical facilities in the major cities are modern and well staffed. Emergency telephone contacts are included with your tour documents. Your hotel staff is always ready and willing to assist with any emergency.

9. SHOPPING – WHAT CAN I BUY?Africa is a shopper’s paradise – with excellent local handicrafts, wood and stone artifacts, semi precious and precious gems, textiles, clothing, and an array of other goods. Haggling is a way of life, except in the large city stores, and your “Safari Shillings” vouchers will get you started on your shopping at a selection of boutiques.

10. HOW MUCH FILM SHOULD I TAKE?

None. You should have switched to digital by now and you can recharge your batteries at every safari lodge and camp. Africa is a photographer’s paradise so remember to bring a zoom lens together with an adequate memory storage and camera charger.

Trevor Fernandes, Managing Director of Wildlife Safari, compiled this list of ten most often asked questions and answers about travel to Africa. You may email your questions regarding your travel plans to Africa direct to Trevor ([email protected]) – no attachments please.
