OUR SENSES AND NERVOUS SYSTEM

STIMULY

A stimulus is any change that takes place around us that our senses notice.

THE FIVE SENSES

The five main senses are: touch, smell, sight, hearing and taste. These senses allow us to interpret what is happening around us.

TOUCH

We use our sense of touch to interpret in formation about texture, temperature, pain or pressure.

Our skin covers and protects our body. It contains specialized receptors that respond to stimuli.

SIGHT

Our sense of sight lets us see the world around us. We can see objects and identify their shape, colour and size essential in this process. The sensory organs that we use for seeing things are our eyes.

HEARING

We hear the sounds around us thanks to our sense of hearing.

Hearing occurs when our ears detect and process sound.

TASTE

The tongue is responsible for our sense of taste.

The basic flavours are : sweet, salty, sour and bitter.

SMELL

The nose, which we use to interpret smells, is responsible for our sense of smell.

There are hundreds of different types of olfatory receptors, each designes to detect certain smells.

WHAT IS THE NERVOUS SYSTEM?

The nervous sytem transmits signals to differents parts of our bodies to coordinate our voluntary and involuntary actions. These action respond to the stimuli from inside our bodies (like feeling hungry or thirsty).

The nervous system has two main parts: the central nervous and the nerves. The nervous system consists of specialised cells called neurons.

VOLUNTARY AND INVOLUNTARY ACTIONS

The nervous system is responsible for two types of actions : voluntary (those actions that we choose to do) and involuntary actions (those actions that our bodies perform but which we have no control over).
