What is O.R.I.O.N

Orion program is the of a long-term operational

technology investment. Late 90s, UPS began discussing improvements on

customer service delivery. Ideally, to enhance customer service and reduces

numbers driven. Most efficient delivery route possible.

Scope of ORION Project

Going into the new millennium, UPS made a

commitment to increase its investments in technology.

ORION uses expansive fleet telematics & advanced algorithms.

These algorithms gather and calculate countless amounts of data to provide UPS drivers with optimized routes.

Analysis

System relies on online map data. Contains 250 million address data points for access. UPS Engineers wrote a 1,000 pages Orion algorithm,

an exercise in Heuristics. Heuristics is the search for the best answer one can

find with the results continually refined over time based on experience.

Includes “Traveling Salesman Algorithm” A tool that calculates the most efficient path between a

variety of points & geographic mapping. Delivery Information Acquisition Device (DIAD)

Indicates two possible ways for drivers to make deliveries.

Implementation of the ORION system followed the

PMO guidelines, rather UPS incorporated some in-house process.

The company had two PMOs. New Jersey & Georgia

Project implementation aligned with that established in the PMBOK.

Project Managers (PM) were mostly high-level managers.

PMs moved to different locations within the U.S. overseeing ORION implementation.

According to UPS, ORION has been more than a decade in the making.

First prototype was implemented in 2008. ORION is currently being implemented and target

complete date in 2018. ORION deployment required approx. 700 employees

ORION has been deployed to 10,000 routes and 82

facilities by 2013. In 2014, 24,00 routes were optimized with Orion. Currently, about 40% of the company’s 55,000 U.S.

routes using ORION. Routes using the system have been reduced by an

average between 7 and 8 miles. Expected to save UPS $300 - $400 million a year. Benefits to customers.
