Help us return lost items…Please mark all of your child’s belongings with a permanent marker by writing your child’s first and last name on each item. Last year we had hundreds of unclaimed items in the lost and found located in the auditorium. With your help, we can return lost items to your child! Traffic, Drop Off and Pick Up! At the end of the school day, there is a huge traffic jam and our safety patrol is working hard to ensure students and families safely cross the intersection on Redwood and Felton. Our 5th students on Safety Patrol, along with their teachers, work closely with San Diego Police Officers to follow traffic guidelines. When picking up your child at the end of the day, please park your car and walk up to the school to get your child. Children should not be running across the street between cars to meet cars as they are stopped in traffic. The traffic is difficult for about 15 minutes. I ask for your patience and cooperation during these crucial times to keep all our students safe!! The parking lot on Redwood is for staff only and not available for student pick up or drop off. In addition, dogs are not permitted on campus. Please leave your dog at home when picking up your child. Thank you for your assistance in keeping all students safe! Moving in the Morning! McKinley’s running/walking program starts at 8:45 every morning on the blacktop. We want all students walking around the track to get the blood circulating for optimum learning. Parents, siblings and family members are welcome to participate so everyone is moving. The playground structures and equipment are off limits before school including the kindergarten playground and swings. After school, we do not have staff supervision on the playground and Primetime has access to our facilities. Thanks for your cooperation. Planning for 2015-16 For next year, McKinley’s start time will change from 9:10 to 8:30 a.m. with dismissal at 3:00 p.m. On minimum days, school will be dismissed at 12:15 p.m. This change will help allow for closer alignment between the start times of middle and high schools in the San Diego High Cluster. Primetime will still be available from 6:00 a.m. to 6:0 p.m. The district is reviewing school bell times across every cluster. If this review requires a change in start times, all families will be notified.

What a great start to the 204-2015 school year! Our students are off to a great start thanks to all the hard work of our wonderful staff and supportive parents. The IB Primary Years Programme: Thank you to the many parents who attended Family Friday on October 3, 2014 from 2:35-3:40 p.m. For the first thirty minutes, parents joined Erin Knight, our IB Coordinator in the Media Center to have a brief presentation on the International Baccalaureate Program for the Primary Years. The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a curriculum framework. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is defined by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, explored using knowledge and skills derived from six subject areas, with a powerful emphasis on inquiry based learning. Teachers write instructional units of inquiry under each of the themes incorporating their grade level subjects and standards. For more information, visit: www.ibo.org and our website at www.sandi.net/mckinley . Next Family Friday is on November 7, 2014. Join me in the Media Center at 2:35 p.m. for a 30-minute presentation and then visit classes for the last 30 minutes of the day! Start your weekend early and spend quality time with your children learning alongside them in their classrooms. To continue improving our school, I want to get your feedback starting with a parent survey that will be distributed during the Family Friday and posted on our various websites. Your input is vital as we continue to make our school great and better serve our students and families at McKinley. In addition, I will spend time on each Friday sharing information on the Common Core Standards. Attendance There is a proven connection between attendance and achievement in school. At McKinley, we aim to promote a positive culture of daily, punctual attendance for all students. This year I will continue to closely monitor and promote student attendance on a daily and monthly basis. Specifically, we will focus on (1) reducing tardies and (2) addressing chronic absenteeism of students whose absences are over 10% of the days in school. Did you know that every single absence costs our school district $44.57 per day? These daily absences add up. To date, McKinley’s absences have totaled, $21, 170.75 in lost ADA funds. Yikes! We are only in the second month of school and absences have skyrocketed as compared to last year. If your child has a fever, please stay home and report the absence; otherwise, come to school on time, every day! We will continue to offer Saturday school several times throughout the year to help students make up attendance. Mark your calendars for November 15th from 9-1. Thank you for your partnership!! Attendance counts!!

A Message from Principal Julie Ashton-Gray

Spanish, Dance, Gardening and Library –The Wheel! Students at grades K-3 began the “wheel” the week of September 22. Students have a two-hour block where they rotate to Spanish,

Dance, Gardening, and library. The Spanish, dance, and gardening classes are a result of the generous donations from the

PTC to support these programs for our students. Language is a requirement for the IB Programme and we begin studying

Spanish in kindergarten. Students in grades 4 and 5 have a phenomenal music program offered by the school district for one

hour every Wednesday morning followed by Spanish for one hour. Parents will receive information from our Spanish

teachers to help reinforce language instruction in the home.
