Dr. A.J.

From the Pastor’s Desk: Nota de nuestro pastor:

Dr. A.J. Cronin was a great Christian physician in England. One night he assigned a young nurse to a little boy who had been brought to the hospital suffering from diphtheria, and given only a slight chance to live. A tube was inserted into the boy's throat to help him

breathe. It was the nurse's job periodically to clean out the tube. As the nurse sat beside the boy's bed, she accidentally dozed off. She awakened to find that the tube had become blocked. Instead of following instructions, she was immobilized by panic. Hysterically she called the doctor from his home. By the time he got to the boy, he was dead. Dr. Cronin was angry beyond expression. That night Dr. Cronin went to his office and wrote his recommendation to the board demanding the immediate expulsion of the nurse. He called her in and read it, his voice trembling with anger. She stood there in pitiful silence, a tall, thin, gawky Welsh girl. She nearly fainted with shame and remorse. "Well," asked Dr. Cronin in a harsh voice, "have you nothing to say for yourself?" There was more silence. Then she uttered this pitiful plea, "...please give me another chance." Dr. Cronin sent her away. But he could not sleep that night. He kept hearing some words from the dark distance: "Forgive us our trespasses." The next morning Dr. Cronin went to his desk and tore up the report. In the years that followed he watched as this slim, nervous girl became the head of a large hospital and one of the more honored nurses in England. In today’s Gospel reading we reflect on the incident of a woman who was caught in adultery and brought before Jesus for his verdict on her. Jesus saved the life of the woman by saying to the people who had brought her before him, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” In response to his challenge, they all went away one by one. Even though he was sinless, he showed extra ordinary mercy and compassion to a sinner. Even more, he sent the woman away saying, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.” How different we are from our Lord. We are judgmental about the unmarried mother, the alcoholic, the drug addict and the shop-lifter, ignoring Jesus’ command: “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Let us learn to acknowledge our sins, ask God’s forgiveness every day and extend the same forgiveness to our erring brothers and sisters. We too should learn to hate the sin and love the sinners showing them mercy, compassion, sympathy and acceptance, leading them to noble ways by our own exemplary lives.

I had a conversation with my daughter about

the responsibility she had to cultivate her

God-given gifts and to give back with increase to God. Of course, she was just

fifteen at the time and as a typical teenager had no real desire to push much

harder than necessary. As she gets older and increases in maturity I pray for her to

really become committed to becoming the best she can be at whatever she does,

because I know she has been given many gifts.

Being committed to growing in maturity as a disciple is an important characteristic

of an Everyday Steward. This is a commitment to striving to be better today than

we were yesterday, and better tomorrow than we are today. We are also

committed to getting back up and trying again when we fail to be the person God

created us to be.

No one reading this is perfect. But hopefully many of us are committed to working

hard toward spiritual growth. Jesus asks each of us to work hard to become the

saints God created us to be, just like he asked the woman caught in adultery in

John's Gospel to go forth and sin no more. He knew she had failed along the way,

but not to get up and change her life would be the real sin. It is sin that keeps us

from truly cultivating that which we have been given. However, God is committed

to us and offers second chances. We need to be committed to him. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

There is a new book entitled “Dear Pope

Francis” published March 1, 2016 in which Pope Francis answers 30 questions presented to him from children from around the world. The U. S. based Jesuit publishing house Loyola Press approached Francis with the idea last May, and they received his positive response. Questions were collected from children aged 6-13, from both Catholic and non-Catholic children, from wealthy cities and from poor rural areas, and even from refugee centers. The children were also asked to send drawings which were included in the book. For the children that had no crayons or paper, the publisher sent them some. From the 259 questions received, coming from 26 countries in 14 languages, a committee chose about 50 to present to Pope Francis of which 30 made it into the book. The questions were read aloud to Francis in Italian, but he also reviewed the drawings, commenting on the scenes and colors and often had a good laugh over the way the kids drew the Pope. Some of the questions were theological, others practical and a few were personal and made the Pope laugh. Like the question about when he was young what did he want to be when he grew up? He said he wanted to be a butcher, since when he went to the market with his grandmother, the butcher’s work was fascinating and “the way he cut the meat, that was art,” and the butcher’s apron with its big pocket seemed to be full of money. The Holy Father answered that his favorite thing about being Pope was “being around people, and that he learned something every time” he met someone new. Pope Francis was asked who was his favorite saint? That caused him some indecision saying “I have several saints friends, but I do not know which I admire the most, but I'm a friend of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus; I am a friend of St. Ignatius; I'm a friend of St. Francis…I would say these three, perhaps, are the ones I most keep in my heart.” He said being Pope gives him a sense of “calm,” and that it is “a grace from God,” adding that it “feels as I am coming to the end of my life with so much peace.” Pope Francis said being Pope is “both easy and difficult, as is the life of any person,” explaining “it’s easy because you have a lot of people to help you…and there are difficult moments because there are difficulties in all the work there is.” At the book unveiling Pope Francis met with several of the children who wrote him letters. He said that the questions asked for the book were some of the “most difficult” he had ever been asked. He then proceeded to answer more questions the children had. At the end of the encounter, Pope Francis addressed the issue of “Why do children suffer?” saying it is a question which causes him great pain, and he admitted he did not know the answer to the question. “The only thing that gives me light is looking at the cross, and seeing what Jesus suffered; it is the only answer I can find,” he said. In the book “William from the United States asked the question if you could cause one miracle…what would it be? The Holy Father answered “to stop the suffering of children.”
