Una reducción en la cantidad de oxígeno disuelto enlos océanos por el cambio climático ya es perceptible en algun as partesdel mundo y podría ser evidente en grandes regiones oceánicas entre2030 y 2040, según un estudio realizado por el Centro Nacional de

Investigación Atmosférica (NCAR, por sus siglas en inglés), de EstadosUnidos.Los científicos saben que el calentamiento global puede suponer que sedebilite gradualmente el oxígeno de los océanos, lo que dejaría a peces,cangrejos, calamares, estrellas de mar y otra s especies marinasluchando por respirar, pero ha sido difícil determinar si esta esp eradafuga de oxígeno ya está teniendo un impacto notable.“La pérdida de oxígeno en el océano es uno de los graves efect ossecundarios del calentamiento de la atmósfera y una amenaza para lavida marina”, dice Matthew Long, científico del NCAR y autor principal deles tudio, publicado en la revista ‘Global Biogeochemical Ciclyes’, unapublicación de la Unión Geofísica Americana.Long indica que, “dado que las concentraciones de oxígeno en el océanovar ían naturalmente segú n las variaciones en los vientos y la temperaturaen la superficie, ha sido un reto atribuir cualquier desoxigenación alcambio climático”. “Este nuevo estudio nos dice cuándo podemosesperar el impacto del cambio climático para sobrepasar la variabilidadnatural”, apunta.El océano entero, desde las profundidades hasta las aguas pocoprofundas, obtiene su suministro de oxígeno desde la superficie, ya seadirectamente de la atmósfera o de fitoplancton, que libera oxígeno en elagua a través de la fotosíntesis.Con el calentamiento, las aguas superficiales absorben menos oxígeno yel que es absorbido tiene más dificultades para bajar hasta lasprofundiades del océano, ya que se expande y es menos propenso ahundirse.“ZONAS MUERTAS NATURALES”Gracias al calentamiento y a la refrigeración natural, las concentracionesde oxígeno en la superficie del mar están cambiando constantemente yesas modificaciones pueden persistir durante años o incluso décadas enlas profundidades del océano.Por ejemplo, un invierno excepcionalmente frío en el Pacífico nortepermitiría a la superficie del océano absorber una gran cantidad deoxígeno. Gracias al patrón de circulación natural, ese oxígeno podríadesplazarse más profundamente hacia el interior del océano, dondepodría tranquilamente ser detectado años después a medida que viaja alo largo de su trayectoria de flujo. Por el contrario, un clima inusualmentecaliente podría conducir a "zonas muertas naturales" en el océano,donde los peces y otras especies marinas no pueden sobrevivir.Para investigar el impacto del cambio climático en los océanos, unequipo de investigadores, entre ellos Curtis Deusch, de la Universidad deWashington, y Taka Ito, del Instituto de Tecnología de Georgia, sebasaron en el Modelo del Sistema Comunitario de la Tierra del NCARpara realizar un estudio financiado por la Fundación Nacional para laCiencia y el Departamento de Energía de Estados Unidos.

Los científicos proyectaron resultados entre 1920 y 2100 a través delsuperordenador Yellowstone, operado por el NCAR, con el que realizaronensayos de simulaciones climáticas para estudiar el oxígeno disuelto enlos océanos y cómo pudo haber variado de forma natural en el pasado.Con esta información, determinaron cuándo es probable que sea mássevera la desoxigenación debido al cambio climático.Los investigadores encontraron que la desoxigenación debido alcalentamiento global ya pudo haberse producido en el Índico meridional ypartes del Pacífico tropical oriental y en cuencas del Atlántico, yseñalaron que la desoxigenación más generalizada será posible entre2030 y 2040, salvo algunas zonas frente a las costas del este de África,

Australia y el sudeste asiático, donde podría no llegar en este siglo.
