¿CÓMO ES UN YACIMIENTO DE PETRÓLEO?
Está constituido de un material sólido y poroso
(la matriz), cuyos huecos están llenos de fluidos
que generalmente se separan en tres fases: agua,
aceite y gas. Inicialmente en la fase agua sólo
hay H2O, pero tanto en la fase de aceite como en
la fase de gas hay muchos hidrocarburos de
distinta composición. En algunas técnicas EOR
ocurren más de tres fases; por ejemplo, espuma.
También, algunas componentes pueden ser
solubles en la fase agua.

¿CÓMO SE REALIZA LA EXPLOTACIÓN?
• PRODUCCIÓN PRIMARIA: Se extrae a través de pozos utilizando su presión original
• PRODUCCIÓN SECUNDARIA: Es la segunda etapa de la explotación, y usualmente se implementaba cuando la producción primaria declinaba
• RECUPERACIÓN MEJORADA: Anteriormente se le llamó ‘recuperación terciaria’, pero en actualidad los términos Recuperación Mejorada son más aceptados

¿QUÉ PROCESOS HAY QUE MODELAR?
• PRODUCCIÓN PRIMARIA: El movimiento de una o dos fases
• PRODUCCIÓN SECUNDARIA: En actualidad estos términos son usados casi exclusivamente para la inyección de agua. Al caer la presión, parte del petróleo pasa a ser gas y se tienen cuando menos dos fases (aceite y gas) y frecuentemente tres fases (agua, aceite y gas)
• RECUPERACIÓN MEJORADA: Control de la movilidad (agua con polímero), químicos (para reducir la tensión superficial), miscibles, térmicos (agua caliente, vapor y combustión in-situ) y otros (ej., microbianos)
