Lantigua entrega chequepara combatir gangas

En una ceremonia llevada a cabo el viernes, 2 dejunio, 2005, en el Boys and Girls Club, el AlcaldeMichael J. Sullivan anunció que la ciudad recibiría$416,000 para seguridad pública y actividades contralas gangas.

El dinero, entregado por el Representante EstatalWilliam Lantigua a nombre de la representación local,será utilizado para mejorar la seguridad pública. Estainiciativa será dirigida especialmente hacia programasjuveniles que combatan las actividades de las gangasy la violencia, con el Departamento de Policía deLawrence como líder de la iniciativa en contra de lasgangas.

Las agencias participantes, designadas por laOficina Ejecutiva de Seguridad Pública, son elDepartamento de Policía de Lawrence, la Oficina deProbación Juvenil del Condado de Essex, La CoaliciónComunitaria de Lawrence/Methuen, el Departamentode Recreación de la Ciudad de Lawrence, el YMCAdel Valle de Merrimack y el Boys and Girls Club deLawrence. No hubo explicación de parte de la Oficinadel Alcalde de porqué La Liga Atlética de la Policía de

This Friday, June 9th, is the beginning of a week longcelebration of Hispanic heritage in the City of Lawrence witha VIP dinner, followed by daily events. This year, it includesthe participation of Northern Essex Community College witha luncheon on Monday honoring six exemplary graduates atthe Latino Alumni Achievements Awards.

All of the events selecting the queens have been exquisitepresentations of art, class and good taste. This year’s themeof “Breaking Barriers” was especially meaningful in manyways, particularly with the selection of Naed Morales, runnerup in the Miss Semana Hispana competition. We recommendreading her dissertation on page 20. The judges did awonderful job paying tribute to beauty, talent and intelligence.

Semana Hispana brings over 50,000 people into the cityduring the three days celebration on the CampagnoneCommon. This is a safe and healthy festival of which we arevery proud to hold annually.

A principios de semana el comitéorganizador de la Noche Dominicana, juntoal presidente de Semana Hispana, Brian DePeña dieron a conocer durante una ruedade prensa realizada en Casa Dominicana, lospreparativos y los pormenores de esteevento que se realizará el 14 de junio en elPemberton Park.

De acuerdo al presidente del comitéorganizador Claudio Pérez, dijo que comoen años anteriores la Noche Dominicanaestará fundamentada en resaltar los valoresy los elementos netamente folclóricos de laRepública Dominicana.

Pérez afirmó que para poder exponer lariqueza cultural que enaltece a ladominicanidad, se enfocarán en lapresentación de grupos folclóricos del área,artistas locales, pero sobre todo que seráun acontecimiento que ponga en alto elnombre de la tierra del merengue, donde seutilizan tres elementos básicos de estecontagioso ritmo: de güira, tambora yacordeón.

De acuerdo al presidente del evento,para el éxito del mismo nuevamente debende agradecer a varios patrocinadores,personas que han contribuido y colaboradodesde diferentes puntos del Valle deMerrimack, “y además poder hacer realidadla Noche Dominicana”.

Muchos fueron los rumores quesurgieron alrededor de este evento,llegando a decirse que su celebración estabaen peligro y más cuando hasta el momentono se ha escogido a la reina de la NocheDomnicana.

Este reinado estaba supuesto a llevarsea cabo el pasado viernes, pero fuecancelado.

La elección y coronación de la Reinade la Noche Dominicana se va a llevar acabo este próximo sábado en Punto Final, apartir de las 7 de la noche.

Cada país tiene una noche especial parahonrar la patria que recuerdan más allá delos mares, unas horas donde la comida, lamúsica, los vitoreos al lar que extrañan y elpatriotismo se apropia de los que secongregan para hacer honor a la tierra quelos vio nacer y demostrando a otros elorgullo de su herencia.

El presidente de Semana Hispana BrianDe Peña, presente en la rueda de prensa yquien estuvo en la mesa principal junto alos miembros del comité organizador, dijoque el deber de la organización es velar yapoyar a todas las organizaciones y gruposencargados de coordinar las mismas.

Asegura De Peña que resulta más fácilque sean todas las organizaciones querepresentan una nación las que seencarguen de organizar el evento.

“Es decir que al igual que como ocurrecon la Noche Puertorriqueña, donde noobstante es el Movimiento Puertorriqueñoel encargado de organizarla, todas lasentidades puertorriqueñas se integran”,dijo.

Entiende el presidente de SemanaHispana que de ahora en adelante se debeluchar porque todas las organizacionesdominicanas se involucren en laorganización de la Noche Dominicana, yaque es totalmente diferente cuando es una

entidad que toma las riendas, y no uncomité, “puesto que por lo general no tienenla logística ni el material para hacerlo unarealidad”.

Finalmente, De Peña dijo que a partirdel próximo año la organización de la NocheDominicana, se incorporara dentro delDesfile Dominicano.

“La Noche Dominicana si se puededecir se convertiría en una muestra o unanticipo de que será la celebración delDesfile Dominicano, el cual se realiza en elmes de Agosto”, puntualizó.

Esto significa que este será el ultimoaño en que recaerá en un comité laorganización de la tradicional NocheDominicana, ya que el evento pasará a serresponsabilidad del Desfile Dominicano.

Junto a Claudio Pérez, presidente delComité Organizador de la NocheDominicana, participaron en la rueda deprensa, Nolín Báez, Secretario, CarlosTejada, encargado de Relaciones Públicas,y Carmen Vargas, tesorera del comité.

Cada verano la Biblioteca Pública deesta ciudad proporciona la oportunidad acientos de estudiantes de las escuelaspúblicas y privadas de Lawrence de contarcon un evento que le permite no solodivertirse sanamente, sino que además lesincentiva a desarrollar o continuaralimentando el hábito por la lectura.

Previo a las actividades organizadasdurante el verano, justo en el tiempo en quelos estudiantes están disfrutando de susvacaciones, se realiza un evento que puedeconsiderarse como el inicio de unatemporada cargada de emociones, deactividades educativas donde se brinda laoportunidad de que nuestros pequeñosestudiantes se interesen aún más sobre elfascinante mundo que vive y se puededescubrir con facilidad en las páginas de

un libro, no importa el género literario, ni elenfoque que presente.

La actividad denominada “CelebrityReaders” permite que personas que se handestacado en diferentes áreas, que vandesde la política, la religión, el serviciocomunitario, la educación y la seguridadpública, compartan con diversos grupos deestudiantes parte de su tiempo, en una delas actividades más edificante que puederealizar un ser humano, la lectura.

Se estima que cerca de 700 estudiantes,acompañados de sus profesoresparticiparon en esta ocasión de esteacontecimiento que llena de orgullo no soloa los miembros de la administración de labiblioteca sino a cada uno de aquellos queponen todo su empeño en que el eventosea todo un éxito.

El evento se desarrolló en dos partes,la primera se circunscribió a la lectura querealizaron las personalidades invitadas en

el acogedor “Children Room” y la segundaque se llevó a cabo en la tercera planta deledificio de la biblioteca, donde se leexplicaba con una chispa de jocosidad laimportancia de obtener una tarjeta de labiblioteca y las ventajas que la mismaproporciona.

Este segmento fue responsabilidad deRosemary McCulluogh, del Salón de Niñosy John Tessier del Departamento deAudiovisuales, quien hizo de unexterminador dispuesto a eliminar cualquierinsecto, ya que este año el lema de esteverano es: “”What’s Buzzin’ at YourLibrary?”

Como es costumbre lasdiferentes actividadesprogramadas para esteverano se llevarán acabo tanto en laBiblioteca Pública delnorte de la ciudad, 51Lawrence Street y lasucursal del sur,ubicada en el número135 de la calle Parker.

El 9 de mayo, 2006, Patriot Ambulancedonó un carro para sillas de ruedas al Equipode Community Emergency Response, CERT,para ser utilizado en caso de emergencia,tales como seguridad en fuegos, búsqueday rescates ligeros, organización de equipo,y operaciones de desastre médico.

Los miembros de CERT pueden asistira otros en su vecindario o centro de trabajosiguiendo el desarrollo de un eventocuando los profesionales que estánsupuestos a responder no están disponiblespara ayudar. A los miembros de CERT se lesestimula para que apoyen a las agencias deservicio, tomando un papel más activo enproyectos de preparación de emergenciasen su comunidad.

¡Saludos, Amigos Lectores! Esperoque la mayoría haya sobrevivido lasinundaciones con pocos daños. Mi casase me inundó pero fue poco comparadocon lo que otros han sufrido y perdido.Gracias a Dios, la biblioteca no sufrióningún daño y solamente tuvimos quecerrar temprano un día por falta deelectricidad. Sé que muchos hogares ynegocios fueron tan afectados por estasinundaciones que la región ha sidodeclarada área de desastre por el gobiernofederal y estatal.

Todo aquel que tuvo problemasrelacionados con esta tormenta tiene quevenir a la biblioteca y comunicarse conuno de los representantes de FEMA yMEMA. Nuestro auditórium ha sidoequipado para recibir reclamaciones yayudar a los ciudadanos con cualquierproblema que hayan tenido referente aestas inundaciones. Voluntarios hanestado ayudando como traductores, asíque no se tarden en venir y reclamar susayudas.

Gracias a nuestro Alcalde Sullivan,al Director de Planificación MichaelSweeney y al Director de Personal FrankBonet por su dedicación a este proyecto.Es muy importante que Lawrence contaracon un centro de emergencia, ya que elmás cercano se encuentra en Amesburyhaciéndolo casi imposible para mucho denuestros ciudadanos llegar hasta ellos.

Hoy celebramos nuestro CelebrityReader Day (Día de Lectura porCelebridades) en nuestro DepartamentoInfantil. Durante este día, llegan aquímiembros notables de nuestra comunidadpara leerles a los niños de nuestrasescuelas. Fue mucha la planificación y eltrabajo para lograr esta actividad, pero alfinal fue un día de mucha satisfacción.Cerca de mil estudiantes participaron deesta actividad. Ellos disfrutaron delecturas por parte de nuestro AlcaldeMichael Sullivan, por el Presidente deMerrimack College Richard Santagatti, laSenadora Sue Tucker, el Presidente de laFundación de Robert Frost Mark Schorr,y muchos más.

Como invitados especiales tuvimosa Oliver y Todd Balf. Este equipo de padree hijo son los autores e ilustradores dellibro The Story of Manny Being Manny(La Historia de Manny Siendo Manny).Ellos leyeron su libro, sobre MannyRamírez, y después autografiaron copiaspara la audiencia.

Otro visita especial fue la del ratóndel famoso libro para niños, If You Give aMouse a Cookie (Si le das una Galletita aun Ratón). Lois Elliot y Anne Obar, del

Departamento Infantil, tomaron turnovistiéndose como el ratón. El disfraz erade lo más bonito pero muy pesado ycaliente. ¡Yo personalmente no hubiesedurado cinco minutos en él! Pero,valientemente, Lois y Anne duraron horascon él puesto. La actividad fue un éxitototal y quiero darles las gracias a todoslos empleados que hicieron que estaactividad fuera una inolvidable.

Al acercarse las vacaciones deverano, estamos ya planificando nuestroprograma anual de lectura veraniega.Todavía no tenemos los detallescompletos, pero le sugiero que pase porel Departamento Infantil y pregunte porlas actividades y sus fechas. Sé que habrámúsica, obras teatrales, manualidades,historias y premios. Queremos estarseguros de que todos los niños esténenterados de estas y que sepan que sontodos bienvenidos a participar de todasestas actividades gratuitamente. Habráactividades en la biblioteca principal y enla sucursal de South Lawrence.

Estoy muy contenta detener a este grupo de personas comotimón de los Amigos ya que sé que haránun tremendo trabajo. La Ciudad de Lawrence estácontemplando propuestas para eldesarrollo del In Town Mall en CommonStreet. Esta propiedad que ha sufrido denegligencia por tanto tiempo está ahora ala cabeza de un intenso cabildeo entre lascompañías de construcción y los oficialesrepresentando a las diferentes personasque tratan de adquirir el local.

Como propietario en Lawrence quepaga impuestos, abogado con su prácticaen Canal Street, y ex vicepresidente deLawrence Redevelopment Authority, enmi humilde opinión la propuesta ofrecidapor Northern Essex Community Collegeofrece el plan más atractivo para lapropiedad. El proyecto de NECCconsistirá del tipo de inversión de dinerofederal y estatal con un compromiso a laeducación similar a la asistencia quehemos visto ser causantes del progresoen Lowell y Worcester.

La educación es la fundación para eléxito en nuestro país. La educaciónuniversitaria abre puertas que ningúnempleo de salario mínimo puede. Lapropuesta de NECC será un grancomponente en la transición de Lawrencede una economía con base en lamanufactura agotada a una enfocada enlos principios visionarios quenecesitamos para hacer frente a laeconomía mundial del Siglo 21.

NECC construirá un CentroTecnológico de Salud que combinará lasherramientas tecnológicas más modernas

con un plan de estudios de la saludavanzados. Los estudiantes adquiriránlos conocimientos y destrezasprofesionales necesarias para competirexitosamente por empleos en la crecienteindustria del cuidado de la salud. Pormuchos años Massachusetts ha estadoa la cabeza del desarrollo médico y debiotecnología, y la Legislatura y laAdministración de Romney hanrespaldado sus palabras con nuevasleyes y apoyo económico. Un edificiocomo este en Lawrence puede ser uncomponente eficaz en el empeño deMassachusetts por obtener el éxito enesta rama.

Menos del diez por ciento de lapoblación de la ciudad tiene un títulouniversitario. El compromiso de la ciudadhacia el proyecto de NECC será un pasomuy saludable embullando a losestudiantes de todas las edades sobre laimportancia de un título en el éxitoeconómico y personal de cada cual. El martes, 16 de mayo, laAcademia Bellesini celebró unarecepción anual de primaveraen el Centro Rogers para lasArtes en Merrimack College enNorth Andover. La comunidadfue invitada para que pasarauna tarde de vino y queso paracelebrar los logros de losestudiantes, para oír sushistorias de éxito, y paraaprender sobre todo lo que laAcademia Bellesini tiene queofrecer.

Bellesini ofreceeducación privada de calidadsin ningún costo a losmuchachos de Lawrence,sirviendo los grados de quinto a octavo conclases que tienen un máximo tamaño de 15estudiantes. La misión de la escuela esproporcionar un ambiente académicodesafiador y altamente estructurado queprepare a estudiantes para el éxito enescuelas secundarias de preparatoria parala universidad.

Cuando era más joven, Judian Ferrerdecidió abandonar sus estudios en laescuela superior y buscar un trabajo.

Eso fue hace varios años, Judianabandonó la Escuela Superior de Lawrencecuando le faltaba solo un año paragraduarse.

Hoy, una más madura Judian Ferrer,todavía está trabajando en la mismacafetería donde comenzó años atrás y se hadado cuenta de que a menos de que tengaun diploma universitario, nunca conseguiráun mejor empleo.

Animada por su prima Marlene Ferrer,la cual había obtenido un Certificado de GEDa través de Long Island Home Study, unaescuela por correspondencia operada porRobert Collins localizada en East Meadow,NY, y había sido aceptada por HesserCollege, Judian se matriculó en el mismoprograma después de pagar $180.

Judian recibió su certificado de GEDdespués de pasar todos los exámenes conmagníficas notas. “Los exámenes no fuerondifíciles, después de todo, según estudiaba,las materias venían a mi mente”, dijo Judian,la cual con su certificado en mano, se fue aNorthern Essex Community College paramatricularse en un curso de Asistenta deDentista, donde le dijeron que su Certificadoera falso.

De acuerdo con Judian, “Hace unosdías, Hesser College se puso en contactocon su prima con la misma historia. ‘Sucertificado de GED es falso y usted tendráque proveernos con uno válido o no podrácontinuar sus estudios aquí’, le dijeron a miprima”, nos dijo Judian.

“Marlene también pagó $180 por suGED, aunque no sé cuanto pagó a HesserCollege por el curso que está tomando, solosé que para ello obtuvo un préstamobancario”, dijo Judian.

De acuerdo a documentos ahora enpoder de la joven, en abril 5, 2005, el FiscalGeneral del Estado de New York, Eliot Spitzer,ha iniciado una demanda en contra delresidente de Long Island por operar cursoscaseros de GED fraudulentos e ilegales.

El 26 de octubre, 2005, el Fiscal GeneralEliot Spitzer anunció que su oficina haobtenido una orden de la corte en contra deRobert Collins y que éste ha aceptado unfallo en su contra por la suma de $750,000 yun pago a sus clientes por $10,000.

El fallo es una consecuencia de ladecisión tomada por el Juez Anthony L.

Parga de la Corte Suprema de Justicia delCondado de Nassau que prohíbepermanentemente a Collins a operar suscursos caseros de GED sin licencia.

“Mi oficina tomará acción en contra deaquellos que intenten beneficiarseutilizando falsas promesas de acceso a lasoportunidades de educación”, dijo Spitzeren su parte de prensa.

En abril, 2005, Spitzer demandó aCollins por fraude, prácticas engañosas yviolaciones de las leyes y regulaciones delDepartamento de Educación. La demandaalega que Collins engañó a miles deconsumidores a suscribirse a su curso deestudios por correspondencia, mintiendoque les daría un diploma equivalente deGED genuino, autorizado por el estado, unavez que completaran los exámenes y se losdevolvieran por correo.

Bajo las leyes del Estado de New York,toda escuela que ofrezca cursospreparatorios de GED debe tener licenciadel Departamento de Educación. Sólo elDepartamento de Educación puede hacerlos exámenes de GED y solo elDepartamento puede otorgar Certificadosde GED. De acuerdo con la demanda, eldepartamento de educación notificó aCollins que él estaba requerido a cesar suoperación sin licencia de Long Island Home

Debido a las inundaciones por la devastación del 2006, lasestaciones de radio que componen Costa Eagle Radio Group en elValle de Merrimack las cuales incluyen la WNNW 800 AM, WCCM1490 AM y WCEC 1110 AM, llevaron a cabo un radio maratón elviernes, 26 de mayo, desde las 8 AM hasta las 6 de la tarde enAppleton Way (al lado del ayuntamiento) para recolectar alimentos,ropas y donaciones para las muchas víctimas de la inundación quehan sido afectadas por este enorme desastre.

Costa Eagle se unió a Merrimack Valley Federal Credit Union yotros negocios prominentes a través de la comunidad para obtenerdonaciones corporativas y el financiamiento para las muchasfamilias necesitadas en Lawrence, Methuen, Haverhill y por todo elValle de Merrimack.

Se animó a los oyentes de las estaciones para que asistieran yparticiparan en ayudar a sus amigos, familiares y vecinos que estánen necesidad drástica de su ayuda.

Due to the devastating floods of 2006, The Costa Eagle RadioGroup of the Merrimack Valley which includes, WNNW 800 AM,WCCM 1490 AM and WCEC 1110 AM held a Radio Marathon onFriday, May 26th, from 8 AM to 6 PM at Appleton Way (next to theLawrence City Hall) to gather food, clothing and donations for themany flood victims who have been affected by this tremendousdisaster.

Costa Eagle Radio partnered up with the Merrimack ValleyFederal Credit Union and other prominent business throughout thecommunity to obtain corporate donations and funding for the manyneedy families in Lawrence, Methuen, Haverhill and throughout theMerrimack Valley.

Listeners of the stations were encouraged to attend andparticipate in helping their friends, families and neighbors who are indrastic need of their support.

Pat Costa, CEO of the Costa Eagle Radio Group stated, “This isthe first time in our history that all of our stations have bandedtogether as one to support our community.”

The stations are licensed to the communities of Lawrence,Haverhill and Salem NH, which is at the heart of the devastation.“Our goal is to raise as much as we can... as quickly as we can... sothat the families can get back to some form of normalcy”, statedJohn Bassett, station manager of 1490WCCM.

All of the employees of Costa Eagle Radio as well as itsindependent producers participated in the day long event in Englishand Spanish. “We had a huge turn out”, stated Johnny Mackenzie,WNNW 800 am program director. “Latinos are always there for eachother.”

The event was broadcasted all day on all three stations and wasalso heard around the world via the stations internet streams.

More than $2.6 million in federal aid hasbeen approved for Massachusetts residentsin the week since President Bush issued adisaster declaration for three counties dueto the flooding in mid-May.

As a taxpayinghomeowner in Lawrence, an attorney whopractices on Canal Street, and a formervice chairman of the LawrenceRedevelopment Authority, in my humbleopinion the proposal offered by NorthernEssex Community College offers the mostattractive plan for the property. The NECCproject would consist of the type ofinvestment of federal and state monies ina generational commitment to educationsimilar to that which has assisted thesuccessful turnarounds seen in Lowelland Worcester.

Education is the foundation forsuccess in our country. Higher educationopens doors that no number of minimumwage jobs can. The NECC proposal wouldbe a major component of Lawrence’stransition from a tired manufacturingbased economy to one rooted in visionaryprinciples needed to compete in the 21st

century world economy. NECC wouldbuild an Allied Health and TechnologyCenter that would combine the latest intechnological training tools with its

advanced health care curriculum.Students would acquire the educationalinsights and professional skills neededto successfully compete for jobs in thegrowing health care industry.Massachusetts for generations has beenat the cutting edge of medical andbiotechnological developments, and theLegislature and the RomneyAdministration have backed up theirwords with new laws and financialcommitments. A NECC facility inLawrence can be an effective componentof the renewed Massachusetts drive forsuccess in this field.

Less than ten percent of the city’spopulation has a degree in highereducation. The City’s commitment to theNECC project would be a healthy steptoward encouraging students of all agesof the importance of a college degree inone’s economic and personal success. Todo otherwise would serve to waste achance at an opportunity for a project thatoffers an upside in all regards – for thecity, our economy, and our children. Thecity cannot afford to let an opportunitylike this slip away.

Director of WorkforceDevelopment Jane C. Edmonds todayannounced that DisasterUnemployment Assistance (DUA)benefits are now available forindividuals in Essex, Middlesex andSuffolk counties who have or areexperiencing unemployment in one ormore weeks due to recent storm-related flooding.

The unemployment assistance isthe result of a Federal EmergencyManagement Administration (FEMA)declaration of the three counties asdisaster areas, making them eligible toreceive emergency funds beginningthe week of May 14, 2006 andcontinuing. Residents and businessowners in Essex, Middlesex andSuffolk counties have until close ofbusiness on June 29, 2006 in which tofile for these benefits.

Federally-funded DisasterUnemployment Assistance benefitsof up to 26 weeks may be available tothose who have lost work and are notcurrently eligible for regularunemployment benefits, such asthose who are self-employed.

Others who may be eligibleinclude:

• Those who cannot reach their jobbecause they must travel throughthe affected areas

• Those who were to beginemployment but could not becauseof the flooding

• Individuals who became thebreadwinner for a householdbecause of the death of a head ofhousehold due to the flooding or

• Those who cannot work because ofan injury caused as a direct resultof the flooding.

“When a major and devastatingweather event strikes, we must takeswift and significant action to helpour fellow citizens recover,” saidEdmonds. “Disaster UnemploymentAssistance will provide a muchneeded helping hand to those in needof assistance.”

As a young woman, Judian Ferrer,decided to drop-out high school and get ajob at a coffee shop.

That was several years ago. Judian leftLawrence High School one year beforegraduation.

Today, a more mature Judian Ferrer, stillworking at the same coffee shop, realizesthat unless she can produce a collegedegree, she could never get a better job.

With the encouragement from MarleneFerrer, a cousin of hers, who obtained a GEDCertificate through Long Island HomeStudy, a correspondence school operatedby Robert Collins, from East Meadow, NY,and was accepted at Hesser College, Judianenrolled in the same program after paying$180.

Judian received her GED Certificateafter passing all tests with flying colors.“The tests were not difficult. After all, as Iread the materials, it was like a refreshercourse”, said Judian, who armed with herbrand new GED diploma went to NorthernEssex Community College to register in aDentist Assistant course, but she was toldthat her certificate was a fake.

A few days ago, according to Judian,“Hesser College contacted her cousinMarlene with the same story. ‘Your GEDCertificate is fake and you will have toproduce a valid one or you won’t be able tocontinue your studies here,’ they told mycousin,” said Judian.

“Marlene also paid $180 for her GED,but I don’t know how much she paid HesserCollege for her courses; all I know is thatshe got a bank loan to pay for it,” saidJudian.

According to documents now inJudian’s possession, on April 5, 2005, NewYork State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer hadfiled a lawsuit against the Long Islandresident for operating a fraudulent and illegalGED (General Education Development)home study course.

On October 26, 2005, Attorney GeneralEliot Spitzer announced that his office hadobtained a court order against Robert Collinsand that he had agreed to have a judgmententered against him in the amount of$750,000 and to pay at this time $10,000 toconsumers.

The judgment comes after a decisionwas issued by Nassau County StateSupreme Court Justice Anthony L. Pargathat permanently banned Collins fromoperating his unlicensed GED (GeneralEducation Development) home studycourse.

“My office will take action againstthose who attempt to profit using falsepromises of access to educationalopportunities,” Spitzer said in his pressreleased.

On April, 2005, Spitzer sued Collins forfraud, deceptive business practices andviolations of State Department of Educationlaws and regulations. The lawsuit allegedthat Collins duped thousands of consumersinto signing up for his home study courseby falsely representing that he would awardthem with genuine state-authorized highschool equivalency diplomas after theycompleted his GED tests at home, andreturned the tests to Collins by mail.

Under New York law, any schooloffering a GED preparatory course must belicensed by the State Education Department.Only the Education Department canadminister GED examinations, and only theDepartment can grant GED diplomas.According to the lawsuit, the EducationDepartment notified Collins that he wasrequired to cease his unlicensed operationof Long Island Home Study, but Collinsignored the department’s demands.

The lawsuit alleges that Collinsbrazenly lied to consumers with promisesthat they would receive diplomas “straightfrom the Education Department itself” andthat the diplomas could be used “to get intoany college in the United States.”

I hope everyone survived the rainwith minimum damage. I had flooding inmy house but nothing as bad as a lot ofpeople endured. Fortunately, the libraryhad no damage at all and we only had toclose early one day because of a poweroutage. I know that many homes andbusinesses were badly damaged and theregion was declared a disaster area bystate and federal authorities.

For anyone who has storm relatedproblems: you need to come to the libraryand speak to the representatives ofFEMA and MEMA. Our auditorium hasbeen rigged out as an emergency centerfor these two agencies and they are hereto receive claims and help citizens withany problems brought on by the flooding.Volunteers have been serving astranslators, so if you have any problems,please stop by and see them and processa claim for damages.

Thanks to Mayor Sullivan, PlanningDirector Michael Sweeney and PersonnelDirector Frank Bonet for their work onthis project. It was very important for usto have an emergency center in Lawrenceas the next closest one was in Amesburyand, thus, not accessible to all our citizens.

Today was our Celebrity Reader daywhen we have notables from thecommunity in to read to school children.A lot of hard work went into preparing forthis event but it was well worth the effort.Nearly a thousand school childrenparticipated. They enjoyed readings byMayor Sullivan, Merrimack Collegepresident Richard Santagatti, Senator SueTucker, Robert Frost Foundationpresident, Mark Schorr and many others.

A special treat was the appearanceby Oliver and Todd Balf. This father-sonteam is the author and illustrator,respectively, of The Story of Manny beingManny. They read their story aboutManny Ramirez, then signed copies forthe audience.

Another special treat was providedin a visit from the mouse from well-knownchildren’s book, If You Give a Mouse aCookie. Lois Elliott and Anne Obar of

the children’s room staff gamely tookturns being the mouse. That costumewas awfully cute but awfully heavy, too.I wouldn’t have lasted five minutes butAnne and Lois kept it up for four hours!The whole event was a pleasure and I’mthankful to all the staff for making such asuccess of it.

As we approach school vacationtime, we are preparing for our annualsummer reading program. The program ispretty well set at this time so you need tostop by the children’s room for dates anddetails. There will be music, theater,crafts, stories and prizes and we want tomake sure all of our children know thatthey are welcome to participate in thesefree events. There will be eventsscheduled for the South Lawrence BranchLibrary as well as our main library onLawrence St.

Our new Friends of the Library votedin their executive board last week. Thepresident will be Norman Nimmo, treasurerwill be Phyllis Tyler. CorrespondenceSecretary is Caroline Cronin andRecording Secretary Susan Dowd. I amvery excited to have this group at the helmof the Friends and I know they will do agreat job. MVP reps say threatened joblosses as high as 400 at pack-to-order facility

A delegation of Merrimack ValleyProject (MVP) leaders met with Gillette /Procter & Gamble management yesterdayin the wake of the announced closing ofone its two packaging facilities at Devens.The MVP, a regional organization ofcongregations and unions that has beenorganizing for improved working conditionsand job stability for hundreds of temporaryworkers at Gillette’s packaging facility saysit will fight to save jobs at Devens.

“We told Gillette that we will fight forthese jobs and for our original goals ofgreater dignity and opportunity for theseworkers,” said MVP President AnniaLembert. “If necessary, we will fight for thecompensation that workers and thecommunity justly deserve.”

MVP says it will intensify its campaign,beginning with a public action in Lowell onJune 17, in which over 300 religious, labor,and community leaders are expected toparticipate.

Leaders from MVP said thatemployment figures provided to them byGillette last year indicate that averageemployment at the plant impacted bythreatened job cuts was nearly 400employees, not 100 as the company has

Merrimack Valley Project to fightto save the jobs at Devens

reported. The vast majority of theseworkers are temporary employees, thoughMVP leaders say many temps have workedat the facility for years.

MVP says permanent workers at thefacility were told they would receive threeweeks pay if they work through October 31,but only a week’s pay if they leave theirjobs earlier. Temp workers received a memoinforming them that the facility would notclose, and are not expected to receive anycompensation.

“I come from a poor country,” said MVPVice President, the Rev. Victor Jarvis, whois from the Dominican Republic, “and inmy country any worker who has beenemployed for three months and one day isentitled to severance pay by law.”

“I cannot comprehend why a multi-billion dollar company like Procter & Gamble,which paid its top executives hundreds ofmillions of dollars during the buy-out ofGillette, cannot afford to providecompensation to these people, who are verypoor and have been working for Gillette foryears. “

During yesterday’s meeting withGillette, MVP leaders urged the company topublicly clarify its plans for its other

packaging facility at Devens, whichemployees over 300 permanent workers andup to 700 temporary workers.

“We are angered at threatened joblosses that will deprive hundreds of workersand their families of their livelihoods at atime when our community is reeling frommassive flooding,” said Lembert. “We aremobilizing all of our resources to fight tosave these jobs.”Take a swim!

The afternoon rains did not stop the fun at theYMCA’s annual teddy bear picnic held today in thegymnasium at the Andover/North Andover branchof the Merrimack Valley YMCA. Children enjoyed themoon bounce, face painting, song and dance, andteddy bear stories read aloud. Nearly 70 familiesjoined in on the fun. Children made brown paper bagpicnic baskets that they decorated and teddy bearlollipops. After lunch, they continued the fun in theMat Room, where more games were played.

On Tuesday, May 16th BellesiniAcademy hosted its annual Spring Event atThe Rogers Center for the Arts at MerrimackCollege in North Andover. The communitywas invited to join them for an evening ofwine and cheese to celebrate their students’remarkable achievements, hear their storiesof success, and learn about all that BellesiniAcademy has to offer.

Bellesini Academy offers a qualityprivate education at no cost to boys inLawrence, serving grades five through eight,with a maximum class size of 15 students.The mission of the school is to provide anacademically challenging and highlystructured environment that preparesstudents for success in private collegepreparatory high schools.

Each student receives over 2000 hoursof instruction each year: Bellesini’s 12-hourschool days include 8 hours of academicclasses, a 2 hour afternoon enrichmentprogram, and a 2 hour evening study period.Students are also required to attend a fourweek summer program that continues theirEnglish and math curriculum and alsoprovides sports clinics and enrichmentactivities.

The intense program of instruction hasallowed students to gain an average of twograde levels each year in both language artsand mathematics. The first two graduatingclasses have gained acceptance to St. John’sPreparatory School, Central Catholic HighSchool, Brooks School, Pingree School,Austin Preparatory School, and Noble andGreenough School. Combined they receivedalmost 2 million dollars in scholarship offers,allowing them to attend these fine schoolsat virtually no cost to their families.

In a ceremony held Friday, June 2, 2005,at the Boys & Girls Club, Mayor Michael J.Sullivan made the announcement that thecity will received $416,000 for public safetyand anti-gang activities.

The money, delivered by StateRepresentative William Lantigua, D-Lawrence, representing the LawrenceDelegation, will be used to improve publicsafety. This community safe initiative willspecially target youth programs that willcombat gang activities and violence, withthe Lawrence Police Department as the leadagency in the Lawrence Community Anti-Gang Initiative.

The participating agencies earmarkedby the Executive Office of Public Safety arethe Lawrence Police Department, the EssexCounty Juvenile Probation Office, theLawrence Methuen Community Coalition,the City of Lawrence RecreationDepartment, the Merrimack Valley YMCAand the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club.There was no explanation from the Mayor’s

office about why The Lawrence PoliceAthletic League was excluded from the list.These agencies have a long history ofworking together to address youthviolence, gang activity, substance abuseand related problems of crime that are theirby-product.

“This money comes to Lawrence as aresult of Lt. Governor Kerry Healey’s recentvisit to Lawrence where she conducted ananti-gang roundtable,” said Mayor MichaelJ. Sullivan and added, “Lawrence has seengreat collaboration between communitypolicing and many well established youthagencies in its efforts to fight gang activity.This grant will go a long way in furtheringthose efforts,” concluded the mayor.

“The City of Lawrence has come toofar in the past five years and I’m not aboutto let that moment backslide,” said ChiefJohn J. Romero. “We know that these youngkids need early intervention if we are goingto send them down the right path,” addedthe Chief.

Yo no me considero ni bella,ni esbelta pero si inteligente, yes por eso que estoy aquí, paracomenzar a romper lasbarreras del estereotipo de losconcursos. Doy el primer pasopara levantar mi voz y hacermeeco de las jóvenes que tienentalento e inteligencia pero queno poseen los cuerposesculturales que se piensa quedebe de tener toda aspirante aser llamada reina.
