The month of March marked a milestone inactivism among Hispanic/Latinos in Michi-gan and The United States as thousandsof activists across the state and country fo-cused their attention on celebrations hon-oring the late civil rights leader Cesar E.Chavez. The launching of the movie CesarChavez: An American Hero helped bringmuch needed attention to the many injus-tices that Mexican-American farm workershave had to endure living in a country thatsometimesoverlooksour patriot-ism andcontr ibu-tions.

There aremany posi-tive ac-tions thatwere un-der takento addressconditions of Hispanic Americans whocontinue to represent the fastest growingsegment in our population and whosevoices continue be relatively obscure in thefields of politics, education, government,public service, social welfare administra-tion, news media, manufacturing, financeand international trade to list a few. Whilemany gains are being made daily in eachof these areas, for the most part HispanicLatinos remain under-represented in theseareas of endeavor. We have become thelargest ethnic minority group in the U.S.representing 53 Million strong with enor-mous buying power but the gains in num-bers are overshadowed by the high levelsof drop-out among Latino youth. The prob-lem is made greater by the alarming num-ber of Latino youth incarcerated inMichigan and the U.S., leading us to askwhat we should be fighting for.

The passion for justice and advocacy forthe improvement of our condition, as apeople, demonstrated by Cesar E. Chavez,Dolores Huerta, Rosa Parks, Dr. MartinLuther King, Jr. and others should be re-ig-nited in local communities. We must advo-cate! We are thankful for the milesmarched by each one of our legendary ac-tivists but we have so many more miles yetto march for justice and equality.

Our current civic activist leaders know thatwe must impact institutions in order to im-pact systemic change! We are busy evan-gelizing and mobilizing communities onimmigration issues and convening sympo-siums and panel discussions on educationat the local and state level. We are busybringing motivational speakers and con-vening Latino youth summits to promote

education and inspire our youth. These arevery laudable efforts on our part but whatshould we be fighting for? Are our positivepassive actions enough to change the in-stitutions bent on keeping their “power andcontrol”? Will Hispanic/Latinos ever beushered into leadership roles enabled tochange the hiring and promotion practicesof large institutions?

The struggle for civil rights and equality is-sues has becomeso much more le-galistic and politicalin our digital age.Equality before thelaw must beachieved in thecourthouse! The fi-nancial costs of tak-ing an institution tocourt are enor-mous!

We must continueto be determined to promote equality! Thisis our fight! Campaigns for legal actionmust continue to be a major focus of socialmedia networking community activistsleading current efforts on immigration re-form, Race/ethnic studies in K-12 curricu-lum, youth sentencing alternatives, higherminimum wage, collective bargainingrights, LGBT Marriage Equality, driver’s li-censes for undocumented persons, de-criminalization of marijuana, term limits forpoliticians, unemployment extension andreducing the outsourcing of American jobsand increasing financial lending to ethnicminority/women enterprises.

The field of Education must be targetedquickly, if we are going to increase gradu-ation rates and reduce drop-out ratesamong Hispanic-Latinos in Michigan. With-out an educated populace, we are doomedto be servants for generations to come!Political advocacy by our Hispanic/Latinocommunity leaders needs to become ourfirst agenda item. Our population is lack-ing the necessary ethnic teaching pool tomake a significant difference and His-panic/Latino educators in the “pipeline” areeven fewer. Meanwhile our school-agedstudent population continues to outpaceother ethnic groups in Michigan inner-citypublic schools. Charter schools are bene-fitting from Hispanic/Latino student enroll-ments but failing to hire and promoteadequate numbers of bilingualHispanic/Latino staff. The human re-sources statistics in most areas cited in myeditorial are dismal for our population. Wewill continue to post these statistics andgraphs in future feature issues of The Com-munity Voice/La Voz Magazine.

Born in 1927, Cesar E. Chavez started working in thefields at age 11, grew up watching the injustices in-flicted on farm laborers, then eventually became afamed civil rights activist and labor organizer. A 1966telegram sent from Martin Luther King Jr. to Mr.Chavez reads: “As brothers in the fight for equality, Iextend the hand of fellowship and good will….Youand your valiant fellow workers have demonstratedyour commitment to righting grievous wrongs forcedupon exploited people. We are together with you in

spirit and in determination that our dreams for a bet-ter tomorrow will be realized.”

Part of a struggle that still exists today, Chavez or-ganized the largest non-violent protest in U.S. historyto accomplish his ultimate goal of obtaining basichuman rights for over 50,000 farmworkers in Califor-nia. On Cesar Chavez Day, we celebrate one of Amer-ica's greatest champions for social justice. Raisedinto the life of a migrant farm worker, he toiled along-side men, women, and children who performed daily,backbreaking labor for meager pay and in de-plorable conditions. They were exposed to danger-ous pesticides and denied the most basicprotections, including minimum wages, health care,and access to drinking water. Cesar Chavez devotedhis life to correcting these injustices, to reminding usthat every job has dignity, every life has value, andeveryone -- no matter who you are, what you looklike, or where you come from -- should have thechance to get ahead.

After returning from naval service during World WarII, Cesar Chavez fought for freedom in Americanagricultural fields. Alongside Dolores Huerta, hefounded the United Farm Workers, and throughdecades of tireless organizing, even in the face of in-tractable opposition, he grew a movement to ad-vance "La Causa" across the country. In 1966, he leda march that began in Delano, California, with ahandful of activists and ended in Sacramento with acrowd 10,000 strong. A grape boycott eventuallydrew 17 million supporters nationwide, forcing grow-ers to accept some of the first farm worker contractsin history. A generation of organizers rose to carrythat legacy forward.

The values Cesar Chavez lived by guideus still. As we push to fix a broken immi-gration system, protect the right to union-ize, advance social justice for youngmen of color, and build ladders of oppor-tunity for every American to climb, we re-call his resilience through setbacks, hisrefusal to scale back his dreams. Whenwe organize against income inequality

and fight to raise the minimum wage -- because noone who works full time should have to live in poverty-- we draw strength from his vision and example.Throughout his lifelong struggle, Cesar Chavez neverforgot who he was fighting for. "What [the growers]don't know," he said, "is that it's not bananas orgrapes or lettuce. It's people." Today, let us honorCesar Chavez and those who marched with him bymeeting our obligations to one another. I encourageAmericans to make this a national day of service andeducation by speaking out, organizing, and partici-pating in service projects to improve lives in theircommunities. Let us remember that when we lift eachother up, when we speak with one voice, we have thepower to build a better world.

The Lansing Latino Community should be commended forits advocacy in persuading NCG Eastwood Cinemas toshow the CESAR CHAVEZ locally. There were many per-sons involved in planning an evening to premier the filmonce the decision was made to show the movie in severallocations throughout Michigan. The film was also shown

Andrea M. Rodriguez Coordinated the effort along with theassistance of many Lansing area activists involved in theLansing for Cesar E. Chavez Committee. Among themCorina Salinaz, President and Aida Cuadrado were vocalin bringing needed attention to the film. Social media andold fashioned personal contact helped carry the move-ment to a successful conclusion. The event drew dozensof participants for the premier gathering and the moviewas shown to a near capacity crowd. Overall the move-ment to bring the Chavez Movie to Lansing had a positiveimpact.

Lansing area leaders culminated their observance ofCesar E. Chavez Day with a Dinner, Panel Discussion onLatino Education and a dance at the UAW Local 652 Hallat 426 Clare St. where nearly 200 community leaderswere entertained by band Conjunto Champz for anevening of celebration. Among the many local leaderspresent were Corina Salinaz, Gina Salas, Sein Paul Bena-vides, Rudy & Elva Reyes, Pastor Frank Roman, MonicaOrtiz, Florensio Hernandez, Santos Gutierrez, EnriqueMendoza, Miguel Sauceda, Tony “El Chayo” Cervantes &Lisa Cervantes, Al & Gina Salas and education panelistslisted.

Education panelists included: Ignacio Andrade (MSU),Rosa Lopez Killips (Lansing Eastern), Paulo Gordillo(Lansing Schools), and Alfonso Salais (Lansing Eastern)

Educators explored the problem of high school drop-outrates among Latino youth which continue to concern arealeaders in Lansing and in Michigan.Si’se puede!

His schoolsinclude: Fletcher Maynard Acad-emy, Tobin Montessori School, KingOpen School, Vassal Lane UpperSchool, Cambridgeport School,and Cambridge Street UpperSchool.

· Tim Williams (Wilmington,NC): At Feast Down East, Tim cre-ates and maintains school gardens,and helps to develop a farm-to-cafeteria campaign and a Chef to

Detroit Institute of Music Education (DIME), amusic education college dedicated to teach-ing the next generation of modern musi-cians, has announced its launch indowntown Detroit.

After the great success of last year’s Latin American Film Festival, Aquinas College, Calvin Col-lege, Ferris State University, Davenport University and Grand Valley State University arepleased to announce the 5th annual Grand Rapids Latin American Film Festival, which will takeplace April 3th – April 6th, at Wealthy Theatre.

The festival’s goal is to provide the West Michigan community and students with a unique andenriching opportunity to acquaint themselves with the latest and most acclaimed Latin Ameri-can films.

With that objective in mind, our committee has selected fourteen movies from different geo-graphical areas – Chile, México, Paraguay, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, República Domini-cana, Bolivia and Argentina – focusing on a wide range of contemporary subjects. LauraAmelia Guzmán, Dominican Filmmaker will present her film Jean Gentil on Sunday, April 6th at7.00 pm. Furthermore, Dr. Fernando Holguin (Colorado State University) will introduce the topicof the border’s conflict between República Dominicana and Haití in his lecture: “Our Neighbors,the Primitives” on Sunday April 6th, at 6.00 pm., before the screening of Jean Gentil.

Young immigrants celebrated the sum-mer of 2012 when some were able tocome out of the shadows with tempo-rary relief from deportation through theDeferred Action for Childhood Arrivals(DACA) reform. The nation seemed

poised to heal the disruption and threatfamilies and communities experiencebecause of the broken immigrationsystem. But then, momentum slowedwhen House GOP leadership refusedto even allow immigration reform to bevoted on by the House of Representa-tives.

Pew Research's View: UnlawfulReentry drives growth in FederalImmigration Crimes

Washington, DC [Capital-WirePR] - Dramatic growthover the past two decades inthe number of offenders sen-tenced in federal courts hasbeen driven primarily by en-forcement of a particular immi-gration offense--unlawfulreentry into the United States--according to a new Pew Re-search Center of data from theUnited States SentencingCommission (USSC).

Between 1992 and 2012, thenumber of offenders sen-tenced in federal courts morethan doubled, rising from36,564 cases to 75,867. At thesame time, the number of un-lawful reentry convictions in-creased 28-fold, from 690 cases in 1992 to 19,463 in2012. The increase in unlawful reentry convictionsalone accounts for nearly half (48%) of the growth inthe total number of offenders sentenced in federalcourts over the period. By contrast, the second fastestgrowing type of conviction - for drug offenses - ac-counted for 22% of the growth.

As unlawful reentry convictions increased, the demo-graphic composition of sentenced offenders changed.In 1992, Latinos made up 23% of sentenced offend-ers; by 2012, that share had grown to 48%. Over thesame period, the share of offenders who did not holdU.S. citizenship increased from 22% to 46%. Amongfederal sentenced offenders in 1992, 12% were unau-thorized immigrants. By 2012, that share had in-creased to 40%. Unlawful reentry convictions in federal courts are partof a broader stepped up enforcement effort from theU.S. Border Patrol begun in 2005. The data for this re-port come from the USSC and cover all federal felonyand misdemeanor cases between 1992 and 2012 forwhich the offense category is known and the offenderis sentenced in federal courts. These data include allcriminal immigration offenses sentenced under theU.S. sentencing guidelines, but donot include civil immigration chargesthat are heard before U.S. immigra-tion courts. Among the report’s other findings:Offense Composition of Federal Of-fenders: In 1992, the largest offensetype by far was drugs, accountingfor 45% of convictions, while immi-gration offenses accounted for 5% ofoffenses. By 2012, immigration of-fenses made up 30% of offensesand drug convictions accounted for33% of offenses.Prison Sentences: Nearly all of thosesentenced for unlawful reentry in fed-eral courts received a prison sen-tence. On average, the sentencelength for these offenders was about two years.

Geography of Unlawful Reentry Cases: Of the 19,463unlawful reentry convictions in 2012, 73% were con-centrated in only five U.S. border districts: the South-

ern District of Texas, the District of Arizona,the Western District of Texas, the District ofNew Mexico and the Southern District of Cali-fornia. In recent years, many immigrants con-victed in federal courts of unlawful reentrywere processed under the U.S. Border Pa-trol's Operation Streamline program. This pro-gram has accounted for 45% of all federalimmigration-related prosecutions in Southwestborder districts between 2005 and 2012.

La Secretaría de Turismo del municipio reportó que desde febrero pasado reci-bieron a alrededor de 45,000 visitantes lo que representa un 25 por ciento másque en la misma época del 2013.

Hay muchas acciones positivas que se lle-varon a cabo para hacer frente a las condi-ciones de estadounidenses hispanos quecontinúan representando el segmento demás rápido crecimiento en nuestra poblacióny cuyas voces seguirán siendo relativamentedesconocido en los campos de la política, laeducación, el gobierno , la administraciónpública, la administración de asistencia so-cial , de noticias medios de comunicación ,la industria manufacturera , las finanzas y elcomercio internacional para enumerar al-gunos. Mientras que muchos de los logros seestán haciendo todos los días en cada unade estas áreas, para los latinos en su mayoríahispanos siguen estando sub-representadasen los ámbitos de la actividad. Nos hemosconvertido en el grupo étnico minoritario másgrande en los EE.UU. que representa a 53millones de miembros con gran poderadquisitivo, pero las ganancias en losnúmeros se ven opacadas por los altos nive-les de deserción escolar entre los jóveneslatinos. El problema se hace mayor por elnúmero alarmante de jóvenes latinos encar-celados en Michigan y los EEUU, que noslleva a preguntar lo que deberíamos estarluchando.

La pasión por la justicia y la defensa de lamejora de nuestra condición como pueblo,demostrado por César E. Chávez, DoloresHuerta, Rosa Parks, el Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr. y otros, se debe volver a encenderse enlas comunidades locales. ¡Debemos abogar!Estamos agradecidos por los miles que mar-charon por cada uno de nuestros activistaslegendarios pero tenemos muchas más mil-las todavía que marchar por la justicia y laigualdad.

¡Nuestros líderes activistas cívicos actualessaben que tenemos que impactar las institu-ciones con el fin de afectar el cambiosistémico! Estamos ocupados evangelizandoy movilizando a las comunidades en temasde inmigración y convocando simposios ymesas redondas sobre la educación a nivellocal y estatal. Estosson esfuerzos muy loables de nuestra parte,pero ¿para que deberíamos estar luchando?

¿Será suficiente auspiciar los seminarios ypresentaciones para cambiar las institucionesempeñados en mantener su "poder y con-trol"? ¿Tendrán impacto nuestras accionespasivas positivas? ¿Será que loshispanos/latinos nunca ascenderán a

puestos de liderazgohabilitados para cam-biar las prácticas decontratación y promo-ción de las grandesinstituciones?

La lucha por los dere-chos civiles y lascuestiones de igual-dad se ha convertidoen mucho más legal-ista y política en nues-tra era digital. La

igualdad ante la ley se debe lograr en el pala-cio de justicia! ¡Los costos financieros detomar una institución a la corte son enormes!

¡Debemos seguir siendo resueltos a pro-mover la igualdad! Esta es nuestra lucha!Campañas de acción legal deben seguirsiendo un foco importante de los medios decomunicación social. Los activistas de la co-munidad usaran de redes principales esfuer-zos actuales para promover la reforma deinmigración, carreras/estudios étnicos en K-12 programa de estudios, las alternativas desentencias juveniles, el aumento del salariomínimo, preservar los derechos de nego-ciación colectiva, LGBT Igualdad de Matri-monio, licencias de conducir para losindocumentados, la despenalización de lamarihuana, limitar los mandatos de los políti-cos, la extensión del desempleo y la reduc-ción de la subcontratación de empleos alextranjero y el aumento de préstamos fi-nancieros a las empresas de las mujeres yminorías étnicas.

El campo de la educación debe ser prioridad.¡Si vamos a lograr el aumento de las tasas degraduación y reducir las tasas de deserciónescolar entre los hispanos-latinos en Michi-gan, se requiere acción inmediata! Sin unapoblación educada, estamos condenados aser sirvientes para las generaciones porvenir! Los líderes de la comunidad his-pana/latina necesitan poner la educacióncomo el primer punto de nuestra agenda.Nuestra población no posea los maestrosnecesarios para hacer una diferencia signi-ficativa y los educadores hispanos/latinos enel "preparándose para ser maestros" son aúnmenos. Mientras tanto, nuestra población deestudiantes en edad escolar sigue superandoa otros grupos étnicos en las escuelas públi-cas del centro de la ciudad de Michigan.También las escuelas chárter están benefi-ciando de las inscripciones de estudianteshispanos/latinos, pero no para contratar ypromover un número suficiente de funcionar-ios latinos/hispanos bilingües. Las estadísti-cas de recursos humanos en la mayoría delas áreas citadas en mi editorial son tristespara nuestra población. Vamos a seguir en-focados para publicar estas estadísticas ygráficos en futuras ediciones de la RevistaThe Community Voz/ La Voz.

8 años y para ese tiempo mi madre ya era adicta a laheroina, por lo cual commence mi vida en las callesbuscando el amor de una madre y de un padre, peroen vez de encontrar el amor de mis padres lo que en-contré fue crimenes y drogas para escapar mis culpascuando yo lastimaba a personas y todo esto lo hicepara llenar mi soledad, y el dolor del abandono de mispadres, y con eso ya dicho, yo quería hablar con ust-edes sobre algo más importante que mi vida llena decrimenes y la maneraque me perseguía el dinero.

Mi intensión es darles un mensaje a los jóvenes latinos“Si usted es una madre, por favor dele el amor y aten-ción a sus hijos para ser respetuosos en la comunidady con la ley. Si usted es un padre por favor no solomuestreles amor, pero deles mucha atención y afec-ción para asegurar que no crezcan a ser drogradictos,ladron, vendedor de drogas en la comunidad o tal vezalgo peor. Yo he hecho esas cosas terribles, y en eso dicho

con los años que hanpasado puedo decir que mivida a cambiado.

Jóvenes si ustedes obede-cen a sus padres y recibenconsejos, pueden vivir unavida linda y no entontrarseprisioneros como yo. Tengo34 años y he desperdiciadotoda mi juventud en las dro-gas y en las calles y al findel día en prisión. He de-jado todo eso atrás, cuandocaí en la prisión.

L.A.S.S.O. es una organización postiva que me ha ayudadoa tener un cambio de corazón y una forma diferente de pen-sar, y he aprendido a poner a Dios primero en mi vida, en-contré una manera de aceptar hermanos que han tenido lamisma experiencia, caminos que yo he vivido y apreciansus vidas y quieren lo mejor para ellos mismos.

Güepez es un pueblo inexistente ycreado por la imaginación de AndrésBustamante, Armando Vega Gil y eldirector Emilio Portes, todos ellosguionistas de El crimen del cácaroGumaro. Sus calles las recorren per-sonajes pomposos con las rivalidadesmás excéntricas, pero sus calami-dades tienen un eje claro: rendirlehomenaje al cine. No a cualquiera, alnacional.

Por ello no sorprenden las constantesreferencias a películas como Y tumamá también, personajes comoPepe el Toro o títulos de vampiros yzombies que construyeron la cine-matografía nacional, aunque, eso sí,con su muy peculiar twist. Cada unode estos guiños separan a la cinta deotras producciones mexicanas, puesademás aprovecha géneros como lafarsa y la sátira para hacer crítica so-cial.

Al más puro estilo del Coyote y el Cor-recaminos –incluso la voz en off essimilar a la de “marca ACME”–, la his-toria se centra en la disfuncional ycompetitiva relación de 2 hermanos:Gumaro (Carlos Corona) y Archim-boldo (Alejandro Calva). Cuando supadre muere, le deja al primero elCine Mújica y al segundo su casa. Sinembargo, Archimboldo se empeña en

acabar con el patrimonio de su her-mano: “¿Como por qué Güepez nece-sitaría un cine, si existeentretenimiento más barato, léase, pi-ratería?”.

De este modo, Portes construye unacrítica que no deja títere con cabeza.Esboza una historia caricaturesca endonde Bustamante interpreta al cor-rupto alcalde, Don Cuino, y Ana de laReguera a una femme fatale queañade conflicto a las situaciones. Laimpunidad, el crimen, la política, laiglesia, los festivales de cine y elgénero “de arte”, son convertidos enpuntadas, algunas mejor logradasque otras, que requierenconocimiento de la filmografía na-cional y sus protagonistas.

Y es ahí en donde El crimen del cá-caro Gumaro cae. Los chistes son de-masiado locales y están enfocados aun público muy específico. Además,son excesivos para una historia sen-cilla pero recargada de elementos,como cameos, efectos especiales –nosiempre al punto–, que es visualmentebarroca y con sketches extravagantesque le restan dinamismo a la críticade fondo.

Sólo en un lugar como Güepez tantodesconcierto podría coexistir.

El Crimen del Cácaro Gumaro was, on paper, a much wel-comed movie for Mexican cinema. In a period when "art films"are winning prestigious awards internationally (i.e. Post Tene-bras Lux and Heli at Cannes) and the number of film festivalskeep growing in the country, a movie that pokes fun at "serious"filmmaking was just a matter of time.

El Crimen del Cácaro Gumaro (the title is, by the way, an obvi-ous joke on The Crime of Father Amaro), a projectionist diesand one of his sons (Gumaro, played by Carlos Corona) inheritsthe old movie theater in a small town. With the help of the mu-nicipal president (played by famous Mexican television come-dian Andrés Bustamante), Gumaro will eventually host aninternational film festival with movies of all kinds: action, horror,musicals, science fiction, romantic, etc.

Blue Cross/Blue Shield/Blue Care Network of Michigan, the Julian Samora Research Institute at Michigan State University, and MI ALMA, Michigan’s statewide Latino advocacy or-ganization teamed up recently to focus on the Health needs of Michigan’s Latinos. The conference served as a vehicle to bring needed attention to addressing gaps in health as-sessment, service delivery systems, and community improvement plans. The forum is just one of many issues being targeted by the Julian Samora Research Institute (JSRI).

The statewide summit on March 21 convened approximately 140 participants interested in addressing health and healthcare issues among Latinos in Michigan. The event was suc-cessful in highlighting challenges in improving the health of Latinos, especially the need for uniform and regularly collected health surveillance data at state and local levels. Thesummit heightened awareness of the issues and broadened networks of Latino and Latino-focused leaders interested in Latino health issues.

According to Dr. Rubén Martinez, a sociologist and Director of the Julian Samora Research Institute at Michigan State University, "It will take new long-term partnerships amongcounty health departments, hospitals and medical providers, and non-profit organizations to effectively address the health needs of Latinos. The Affordable Care Act and Michigan'sexpansion of Medicaid coverage are important steps in providing access to healthcare, but we still need to improve health literacy, launch information campaigns, and conductneeds assessments."

The (JSRI) has a long history of assembling gathering key players in various fields and bringing needed attention to the critical issues facing Latino communities. JSRI has hostedfour statewide summits in recent years. The first summit identified and prioritized key challenges; the second developed a series of critical steps to be taken to address the chal-lenges, the third examined critical issues and practices among selected key challenges, and the fourth focused on education issues, which was ranked as the top concern by partic-ipants. * Para evitar el amargor que a vecesdesprenden, además de rechazar los detamaño más grande, pélalos bien de ex-tremo a extremo. Esto hará también querepitan menos. Para un efecto inclusomayor, puedes rallarlos (una vez pela-dos) con la ayuda de un tenedor para que las sustanciasamargas que se concentran bajo la piel desaparezcan.

* Si lo que quieres es quitar un poco del agua quesueltan, lo mejor es cortarlos en rodajas y escurrirlos con unpaño de cocina. Así estarán listos para condimentar o serviren ensalada.

* Si quieres conservarlos una vez han sido cortados, en-vuélvelos en plástico transparente porque los pepinos cap-tan con mucha facilidad los olores de otros alimentos.

* El pepino no tolera bien las temperaturas extremas porlo que no es aconsejable congelarlos.

* Si estás realizando una dieta de adelgazamiento, elpepino será un buen aliado para perder peso, dado su bajoaporte calórico (tan sólo 12 calorías por cada 100 gramosde producto). Además, tiene una acción diurética y depura-tiva.

* Recuerda que los pepinos también se emplean en mas-carillas de belleza. Para preparar una mascarilla, pasa lapulpa por la batidora junto con un yogur natural, colócalaen el rostro y retírala pasados 10 minutos. Ya verás cómo tupiel queda mucho más tersa.

What is colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is a safe, effective method of examining thefull lining of the colon and rectum, using a long, flexible, tu-bular instrument. It is used to diagnose colon and rectumproblems and to perform biopsies and remove colon polyps.Most colonoscopies are done on an outpatient basis withminimal inconvenience and discomfort.

Who should have a colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is routinely recommended to adults 50 years ofage or older as part of a colorectal cancer screening pro-gram. Patients with a family history of colon or rectal cancermay have their colonoscopy at age 40. Your physician mayalso recommend a colonoscopy exam if you have change inbowel habit or bleeding, indicating a possible problem inthe colon or rectum.

A colonoscopy may be necessary to:

Check unexplained abdominal symptomsCheck inflammatory bowel disease (colitis)Verify findings of polyps or tumors located with a bariumenema examExamine patients who test positive for blood in the stoolMonitor patients with a personal or family history of colonpolyps or cancer.

How is colonoscopy performed?

The bowel must first be thoroughly cleared of all residue be-fore a colonoscopy. This is done one to two days before theexam with a preparation prescribed by your physician.

Many patients receive intravenous sedation, or “twilightsleep” for this procedure. The colonoscope is inserted intothe rectum and is advanced to the portion of the colonwhere the small intestine joins the colon. During a completeexamination of the bowel, your physician will remove polypsor take biopsies as necessary.

The entire procedure usually takes less than an hour. Follow-

ing the colonoscopy, there may be slight discomfort, whichquickly improves with the expelling of gas. Most patientscan resume their regular dietand activities the same day.

What are the benefits ofcolonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is more accu-rate than an x-ray exam ofthe colon to detect polyps orearly cancer. Withcolonoscopy, it is now possi-ble to detect and removemost polyps without abdomi-nal surgery. Removingpolyps is an important stepin the prevention of coloncancer.

What are the risks ofcolonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is a very safe procedure with complicationsoccurring in less than 1% of patients. These risks includebleeding, a tear in the intestine, risks of anesthesia and fail-ure to detect a polyp.

What is a colon and rectal surgeon?

Colon and rectal surgeons are experts in the surgical andnon-surgical treatment of diseases of the colon, rectum andanus. They have completed advanced surgical training inthe treatment of these diseases as well as full general surgi-cal training. Board-certified colon and rectal surgeons com-plete residencies in general surgery and colon and rectalsurgery, and pass intensive examinations conducted by theAmerican Board of Surgery and the American Board ofColon and Rectal Surgery. They are well-versed in the treat-ment of both benign and malignant diseases of the colon,rectum and anus and are able to perform routine screeningexaminations and surgically treat conditions if indicated todo so.
