En el centro está el Kim Lau Memorial, levantado en 1962 en homenaje a los primeros inmigrantes orientales que llegaron a New York. Pocos metros al sur, todavía se pueden ver las huellas del primer cementerio judío de la ciudad, con tumbas del siglo XVII.

Entre Pell St. y Bowery se encuentra Doyers Street, un pasaje conocido como “the bloody angle” (“la esquina sangrienta”) por su violenta historia. A fines del siglo XIX, debido a su ubicación y a los túneles que conectan los viejos edificios, esta cortada era el escenario elegido para las emboscadas y peleas entre las pandillas que dominaban New York. Hoy es un lugar tranquilo, lleno de barberías y peluquerías. Justo en el ángulo de la cortada hay un excelente restaurante vietnamita, ubicado en un subsuelo. Con un patrimonio de más de 35 millones de piezas, es considerado el museo de historia natural más completo del mundo. Las salas más concurridas son la que contiene un enorme zafiro bautizado “Star of India”, donado al museo a principios de siglo por J. P. Morgan, la sala dedicada a los dinosaurios y el gran Sequoia, un árbol que, según sus anillos, vivió 1342 años. Además hay dos giftshops, uno de los cuales está especializado en juguetes didácticos para todas las edades. También puede tomar algo en la confitería Dinersaurus o, sin necesidad de sufrir como Jonás, puede tomar una gaseosa bajo la panza de la ballena azul por apenas un dólar (en realidad se trata de la réplica de una ballena azul capturada en 1925). En el hall del segundo piso le informarán sobre los tours gratuitos, que son la mejor forma de recorrer el museo.

Junto al American Museum se encuentra este enorme cubo de vidrio de 30 metros de altura, donde está uno de los planetarios más modernos del mundo. El antiguo Hayden Planetarium fue totalmente remodelado, y tanto las salas adyacentes como el panetario son una visita imperdible. Además tiene un shop con objetos referidos a la exploración del espacio. No se olvide de pedir la traducción al español del audio del espectáculo en el planetario. Abierto de 10 a 17:45. Los viernes, el horario se extiende hasta las 20:45.

Uno de los negocios más extraños de la ciudad. Su dueño, Henry Galiano, comenzó como curador asistente en el American Museum of Natural History y luego terminó inaugurando un “local de huesos”. Si, leyó bien: huesos. Estudiantes de medicina, pintores, taxidermistas, científicos, decoradores, escultores, científicos, escenógrafos y curiosos recorren día a día M&M en busca de un hueso. Buena colección de libros sobre anatomía y naturalismo.
EXPLORADORES, ARQUEOLOGOS Y AVENTUREROS
El American Museum of natural History patrocina, todos los años, cerca de 100 expediciones en el mundo. Algunos de los más grandes exploradores están relacionados con el museo, como el paleontólogo y geólogo Henry Fairfield Osborn, presidente durante muchos años de la institución; Roy Chapman Andrews, arqueólogo y aventurero que descubrió restos de dinosaurios en el desierto de Gobi y una de las principales “inspiraciones” de Steven Spielberg para crear el personaje de Indiana Jones; el biólogo Ernest Mayr, un gran explorador de los Trópicos; George Gaylord Simpson, considerado uno de los pioneros de los antropólogos culturales; la famosa Margaret Mead, que realizó investigaciones financiadas por el museo en Nueva Guinea; el ornitólogo Robert Cushman Murphy; los argentinos Rodolfo Coria y Luis Chiappe, famosos por sus descubrimientos de huesos de dinosaurios en el “parque jurásico” de la Patagonia Argentina.
UN PLANETARIO DEL SIGLO XXI
El planetario del Rose Center for the Earth and Space es uno de los más modernos del mundo. Con capacidad para 420 personas, se proyectan shows especiales realizados como si tratara de una película de Hollywood. A principios de 2009 pude ver “Cosmic Collisions”, relatado por Robert Redford y realizado por un equipo que incluía técnicos de la NASA.
