IN THE DIRECTION OF KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge, swift and up-to-date access to the information and the capacity and capability of proper information evaluation are those factors which enable success opportunities, surpluses and break-throughs. To presume that the era of great inventions and great inventors is something that took place only once in the past is wrong. Everyone can do well or even be the best in their own field. However, nowadays the most notable achievements require, besides talent and inherent abilities, a larger input of work, innovative approach and energy. Knowledge life expectancy is rapidly becoming shorter, the activity of once in a lifetime study is being replaced by the process of life-long education. Even focused top expert knowledge requires a broader intelectual range and multidisciplinary linkage. Being able to offer a comprehensive integrated solution at the appropriate time is the key asset of successful research and development institutions and companies. Laboratory for Telecommunications at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering operates on principles described above. The direction of knowledge interweaves with project work and entrepreneur challenges and is being complemented with multimedia training. We are able to maintain this mode of operation thanks to the experienced team of laboratory associates from various fields of expertise, long standing pedagogical experience, numerous successfully implemented projects, excellent conditions and equipment for research and development topped with 60 years of presence and experience in the field of ICT in Slovenia. We would like to present our comprehensive offer to you. There are always new, unexplored ways, unknown possibilities and unidentified challenges. The start of a cooperation is always a great new opportunity and therefore I wish we could perhaps mutually carry it into effect. prof. dr. THE PRESENTATION OF THE LABORATORY FOR TELECOMMUNICATIONS

In 2006, the Laboratory for Telecommunications at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering celebrates its 60th anniversary, which makes it the oldest laboratory of the kind in Slovenia. The laboratory has been cooperating with companies on disciplinary projects for many years and at the same time it is also internationally successful. The research of the Laboratory comprises a few interdisciplinary fields: traffic measurements, traffic theory, simulations of network commutation and routing of real and synthetic traffic, the quality of service mechanisms in data transfer of audio and video of traffic through wire and wireless IP networks, the security in IP and mobile systems, the use of telecommunication and information technology applications for users with special needs. The project work of research of information technological systems and services is based on all essential telecommunication technologies: IP, xDSL, MPLS, CATV, GSM, GPRS, UMTS, Wi-MAX, SS7, SIP, XML etc. The key field of work is planning and developing of signalling number 7, converged services and multi-access portals which are based on fixed, mobile, IP and voice platforms. A special attention of research, development and implementation is focused on the role of telecommunication and network technologies in e-learning.

INTRODUCING THE CO-WORKERS There are over 45 permanent, temporary and external co-workers involved in the work of the Laboratory. Most of them work on the fields of telecommunications, IT, computer and electrotechnical engineering and they all take part in the Laboratory trainings. The Laboratory members are also Hevreka! and VITEL members, i.e. the international events which are linked with the international test laboratory SINTESIO, and they also take part in other international workshops and conferences. Their expertise and constant trainings are reflected in final quality and efficiency of development, research and educational work.

The Laboratory for Telecommunications is a member of Telemanagement Forum organization and its co-workers cooperate with the following organizations: IEEE, ComSoc, SINTESIO (ETSI), IEICE, ACM, AACE, AAATE, IFIP and ITU-T.

PRESENTATION OF THE LECTURE ROOMS

Multimedia room The multimedia room, which was built in 2006, is on the ground floor of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. It is furnished with the most up-to-date equipment. In the room there is a desk for 22 people, and by using extra desks it can host up to 40 people. Each place is equipped with fixed and wireless broadband Internet access and if required laptops can be provided. Lecturers have two projectors and separate screens at their disposal and projection is possible from any location in the room. The big board, hand- and head microphone, the soundsystem and the DVD and VHS players can also be used. There is a conference system with 18 places for consulting and conferences where speakers can use microphones and audio and video recordings of events are also possible. By using the video-conference it is possible to connect up to four different locations at the same time. The room is air-conditioned. If required it can also be used as a digital multi-camera studio.

Diploma room The Adiploma Aroom AAis Aon Athe Asecond Afloor Aof Athe Anew Abuilding Aof Athe AFaculty Aof AElectrical Engineering. The room is the venue for trainings, diploma, master's degree, Ph. D. thesis defenses. The room can host up to 20 people. Wireless Internet access is guaranteed. Lecturers can use the ceiling projector and the big board.

Laboratory for Telecommunications The Laboratory for Telecommunications is on the fifth floor of the new building of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. The Laboratory is the venue for laboratory tutorials, demonstrations, trainings and lectures for smaller groups. In the Laboratory there are 15 first-class equipped working places and the extention to 20 working places is also possible. Each working place is equipped with several fixed broadband Internet connections and various laboratory equipment. Wireless access to the Internet is guaranteed. Lecturers can use ceiling projector and the big board.

Andrej Kos is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. He is the head of many interdisciplinary development and research projects and trainings which are organized by the Laboratory for Telecommunications. Both pedagogical as well as research fields are his expertise and together they represent new challenges and task accomplishments. He is focused on planning, realization and managing broadband and mobile telecommunication systems, services and contents.

PRESENTATION

TRAININGS Together with its co-workers and by cooperating with companies the Laboratory for Telecommunications prepares and carries out various trainings. As far as contents, difficulty and duration go the programmes are adjusted to individual client so they include basic telecommunication and information technology knowledge and the most up-to-date development and research techniques. The first-class equipped laboratory and the applications of classical and modern multimedia methods of training in laboratories and the Internet enable to acquire quality knowledge and practical experience in various telecommunication and information technology fields. By cooperating with top experts from all over the world these trainings are connected with international trends.

Classical educations Classical educations are divided into trainings (complete trainings consisting of a great number of contents and last more days) and workshops (oriented trainings consisting of contents which comprise explicit topics and they last one or two days). The trainings comprise more complementary modules of individual workshops. Both versions of classical educations include:

o lectures, o demonstrations, o laboratory work.

ICT Academy The ICT Academy is an initiative and training activity. Within the academy lectures are given by distinguished Slovenian and international business and university experts. Above all the contents of lectures comprise presentations of current development and research themes, achievements and visions for development, good practice examples etc. This is carried out together with the Technology network ICT (http://www.ict-slovenia.net).

E-learning E-learning is an effective method which successfully completes traditional forms of training. Its advantage is time and location flexibility. When attending e-learning personal computer with the Internet connectivity is needed. E-learning can include access to multimedia educational contents and independent learning, pedagogical and expert mentor support during the courses and simultaneous knowledge checking. Training is carried out by using the management e-learning system (http://dl.ltfe.org), which includes users' monitoring. At the end of trainings the participants are given certificates. The key activities in the field of e-learning are:

o performing e-learning, o offering our own and access to other e-learning contents, o mentor support, o guesting e-learning services, o complex sollutions in the field of introducing and using of e-learning.

In the Laboratory, e-learning services have been carried out for more than a decade hence it has a lot of experience.

Multimedia and modern training Nowadays multimedia support is getting more and more importance because it offers the use of modern multimedia technologies and publication of contents in different media. By the help of expert team multimedia support of trainings, lectures, seminars and conferences are offered. The multimedia room with first-class equipment can host up to 40 participants and for more difficult lectures an equipment operator is at disposal. In the room there is a TV studio so that lectures can be recorded, processed and prepared for publication in different media.

Combination The best results are achieved by combining of previously listed ways of training. That is why organization of classical trainings, workshops, seminars and conferences with multimedia support is offered and the e-learning material is created simultaneously. The organization of such events can include:

• organization of classic lectures in the most modern multimedia room, • including distant locations by video conference, • recording of lectures by using digital technology,

• synchronization of recordings with additional material (e.g. PowerPoint slides), • live transmission of lectures on the Internet, • material publication on multimedia web portal and in the e-learining system, • the recording and material edition on a CD or DVD.

Training scenario, contents and ways of realisation are entirely adaptable.

SERVICES, SOLUTIONS AND PROJECT COORPERATION The Laboratory for Telecommunications is active in various research and development fields in telecommunications and information technologies. That is also the reason for offering different services, solutions and contents. The planning of network solutions, testing, measurements, technological and market analysis, e-learning, studies and counselling also comprise a close cooperation of experts and clients and by considering the actual state, needs, requirements and visions optimal adaptation and quality results are guaranteed. The cooperation in these fields is project work. The model of project cooperation, laboratory work and parallel interdisciplinary training is also possible.

PRODUCTS In the field of its own product and contents development the focus of the Laboratory lies on protocol development, converged fixed and mobile applications, advanced user applications from the next generation network concept, setting up training systems with planning and appropriate contents development, solutions and setting up pilot projects. The offer which is adapted to the customer's needs follows the most modern telecommunication and information technology directives as well as key requirements and it excels in innovation, careful planning and it is user friendly. The cooperation in these fields is project work. The model of project cooperation, laboratory work and parallel interdisciplinary training is also possible.

326 m ASL The Faculty for Electrical Engineering is situated in the southwest of Ljubljana, i.e. 2 km from the motorway to Trieste. There is about a 20-minute walk from the centre. There are also other technical faculties and research institutions in the area. Starting from the bus and railway station it is best to go west through Trg osvobodilne fronte Aup Ato Athe Acrossroad Awith ASlovenska Acesta. ATurn Aleft Aat Athe Acrossroad. After A100 m Ayou will get to the bus station in Bavarski dvor. Take the number 6 bus (Dolgi most) on the right side of the road. The bus fare can be paid with cash or a token which can be bought at the newsagent's or the LPP office in Bavarski dvor. The fifth bus stop is right opposite of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. When coming to Ljubljana from Kranj direction (i.e. northwest), take the number 1 bus (Mestni log), which also stops right opposite the Faculty.

Travelling by plane Brnik Airport is situated about 20 km northwest from the centre of Ljubljana and it has good connections with other European airports (Zürich, München, Frankfurt, Rome, Paris, London). Of course there are also other airports near Ljubljana (Maribor, Trieste – Ronchi, Zagreb, Klagenfurt). If you should choose the latter airports, you can get to Ljubljana by bus or by train, which would also be the best option. Ljubljana has good railway and road connections. The bus and the railway stations are near the centre of Ljubljana and there is about a 30-minute walk to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. From the city centre by car From the bus and the railway station drive straight ahead along Trg osvobodilne fronte road past Athe Acrossroad Aand Acontinue Adown ATivolska Acesta Aroad Afor Aabout A2 km. ATurn Aright Aat Athe second trafficlights and continue in Tržaška cesta. Turn left at the third trafficlights and drive along Jadranska ulica to the first trafficlights where you turn left. Drive for about 100 m along Jamova cesta and turn left to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering drive. Parking is possible by previous agreement. From the ring by car Take the Ljubljana – zahod, Industrijska cona Vič exit. Turn right towards the centre at the first crossroad and drive up to Ilirija (a building on the left side). Turn right to Jadranska ulica at the first trafficlights and then turn left at the first trafficlights. Drive along Jamova cesta for about 100 m and then turn left the Faculty of Electrical Engineering drive. Parking is possible by previous agreement.
