Volaris starts new service to Mexico from San JoseSan Jose, CA — Volaris Air-

lines launched direct service last week between San Jose and Mexico with its fi rst fl ight to Guadalajara, making San Jose the third US city

in the Mexican carrier’s network. Greeted by a water salute on the airfield from the San Jose Fire Department, the fi rst Volaris fl ight carrying Volaris CEO Enrique Bel-tranena and other airline offi cials arrived at Gate 16 at Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC). The fl ight was welcomed by Mayor Chuck Reed, Mexico Consul Gen-eral David Figueroa Ortega, and San Jose community and business leaders.

“We’re looking forward to the long-term success and growth of Volaris in San Jose,” said Mayor Reed. “They’re an outstanding addition that will provide more air service and travel choices for our community.”

Volaris is the fi rst new airline starting service at SJC since Hawai-ian Airlines launched its Honolulu fl ight in October 2005. San Jose is the 25th airport in the Volaris net-work of routes serving Mexico and the United States.

Summary of new San Jose-Guadalajara service from Volaris:

Major factors for selecting SJC to expand the Volaris network con-necting Mexican destinations cited by the new airline include the size and strength of the Mexican-Ameri-can community in San Jose and the Bay Area, SJC’s pivotal location for Silicon Valley technology busi-nesses, and the convenience and effi ciency of the recently modern-ized airport.

“It’s not a coincidence that Volaris decided to enter the US-Mexico market by making San Jose its third international destination,” said Beltranena. “We see a market with enormous potential, and we see the opportunity to make air travel between our countries, specifi cally between California and Mexico, more affordable and convenient.” The new fl ights are available for booking immediately through all Volaris distribution channels.

San Jose, CA — San Jose’s City Manager on Tuesday this week released a proposed budget for the 2010-2011 fi scal year that closes a $116 million shortfall in the city’s General Fund budget through a combination of service cuts, layoffs, and revenue increases. The City Manager’s proposed cuts and other documents are online: go to www.sanjoseca.gov and click on Budget Info. Residents interested in getting regular updates on the budget situ-ation should e-mail Mayor Reed at [email protected] to stay informed. Mayor Chuck Reed is-sued the following statement regard-ing the City Manager’s proposal. San Jose is facing the most diffi cult fi scal situation in our history. Our

Each year the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley recognizes and awards an exemplary Latino Familia that is inspirational to others, in community volunteerism and phi-lanthropy. A family that has demonstrated multi-generational volunteerism within their family and has had a tremendous impact in the community they serve. For the 2010 La Familia Award, the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley will honor a Latino family that has served or is serving in the United States Military. They will be recognized for their contribution in the service to the United States and their volunteerism in our local community.

The special family will be honored at a very special gala event, the 21st annual Hispanic Charity Ball, being held on Saturday, October 16, 2010, at the San Jose Fairmont Hotel. They will also be recognized in local media and celebrated by the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley all year long! Nominate your special Familia today.

$116 million shortfall is more than the budget for all of our parks, libraries, community centers, and senior services combined.

We can only close this gap if everyone works together and shares the pain. There is an alternative to service cuts and layoffs. We can save jobs and vital services if we all share the sacrifi ce. That’s why I continue to call for all employ-ees to give up 10 percent in pay and benefits to minimize layoffs

and service cuts. I know that the concessions I’ve asked for will be diffi cult for many of our employees and their families. However without these shared sacrifi ces, hundred of employees will lose their jobs and residents will lose the services they depend on.

Many employees and com-munity members have stepped forward with creative ideas to save services and jobs. Thank you. Your suggestions have helped reduced

the need for cuts in services. I also want to thank my colleagues on the City Council who recognize that we need ongoing solutions to the budget problems we face, who understand that solving this problem with one-time solutions will only cause greater pain in the years ahead. The choices we face this year are diffi cult. The people of San Jose are counting on us in these tough times to pull together to save services and jobs.≤≥

Rental Rights & Referrals Program

San Jose Municipal Code 17.23

The Director of Housing has determined that the City of San Jose is NOT experi-encing a severe rental housing shortage. Based on information for the first quarter

of 2010, the San Jose rental housing market has a 4.7% vacancy rate. The

impact of these findings is that, effective June 1, 2010 “no-cause” notices served to tenants living in rent-controlled prop-erties will be 90-day notices, or 60-day notices including an offer to arbitrate for those tenants who have lived in the unit

for more than one year.

Mothers are the unsung heroes of the world. Every day they sacri-fi ce their time and devote their love to the children they brought into the world. What mother doesn’t hope to be celebrated and pampered, if just for a bit, by her children in recog-nition for all that she had done for them? That is why every year on the second Sunday of May children pay hommage to their moms on Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day hasn’t always been a standard spring holiday. In fact, mothers went officially un-celebrated for years and years. It wasn’t until the 20th century that an offi cial holiday was established to honor mothers, grandmothers and the other special women in people’s lives. Anna Jarvis was a woman who made great strides toward establish-ing a national holiday for mothers. Jarvis held annual gatherings called “Mother’s Friendship Day” with an objective to heal the pain of the

Mother’s DayPor Luisa Fernanda Mon-

Momento de reflexión sobre las madres inmigrantesvictims and those affected by the Civil War. After her own mother died in 1905, Jarvis decided a na-tional celebration of mothers was in order, and began to campaign for such a holiday.

Jarvis began by soliciting the pastor at the church where her mother had taught Sunday School classes for a special commemora-tive mass. The church obliged, and the fi rst Mother’s Day celebration took place on May 10, 1908 at Andrew’s Methodist Church. Later that day, Jarvis celebrated Mother’s Day again with her brother at her home in Philadelphia. The Mother’s Day idea eventually caught on, and President Woodrow Wilson made it offi cial in 1914 that the second Sunday in May would be celebrated as Mother’s Day annually. Since then families have gathered annu-ally together to give thanks to the special women who have helped shape their lives. (CL)

Give guests the food they loveOf the many things people

look forward to come the holiday season, food is at or near the top of many people’s list. Beginning with Thanksgiving, the holiday season is the one time of year even the most health-conscious foodie allows for some leeway when it comes to daily diet. For the especially ambitious party host, a truly memorable holi-day party is one that acknowledges that love of holiday food but takes things one step further, offering guests more than the traditional holiday fare. Perhaps no ethnic food strikes a stronger chord than Italian cuisine, which seems to be a homerun with everyone regardless of one’s nationality. Traditional Italian entrées always light up a guest’s eyes.

But the entrée isn’t the only way hosts can give their holiday an Italian theme. Panettone, the traditional Italian sweet bread be-loved across Italy, is now growing in popularity in the United States as well, with domestic sales up 14 per-cent. For hosts hoping to give their holiday party an Italian theme from the fi rst appetizing hors d’oeuvre to the fi nal delectable dab of dessert, consider the following recipe for “Panettone Sundae with Berries” courtesy of Bauducco, makers of America’s most popular Italian sweet bread.

Panettone Sundae with Ber-ries (Serves 4)

- Cut the Panettone slices into

medium-sized circles. In a skillet, add a tablespoon (one pat) of butter and brown the Panettone circles until crisp on both sides.

- Remove from pan and sprin-kle with confectioner’s sugar. Place a little of the cold berry puree on a plate, then Panettone and a little of remaining raspberry, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. Top with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream and serve at once. (CL)
