TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LETTER FROM THE PASTOR PAGE THREE As time goes on Jesus’ reputation grows. Jesus wants to know what people are saying about him. So he asks his disci-ples what people are saying about him. Some say he is John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others think he is Jeremiah or one of the prophets. Finally, Jesus asks the disciples who they say he is and Peter re-sponds: " You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." This is a very significant moment for Peter and the disci-ples. This confession makes clear that the long awaited Messiah is finally here in the person of Jesus. Jesus tells Peter and the disciples that such revelation can only come from God and not from any human being. What Jesus says next to Peter and the disciples is quite remarkable: “And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church.” Peter, the first among equals, is given a significant role in the building of the community that will become the church. However, we should never forget that it is Christ who builds the church. Peter did not understand the fullness of his confession about Jesus and how he would respond to the events that would evolve. After reading the gospels the question that arises in my mind is this: “What was Jesus thinking when he said this to Peter?” Did not Jesus know how impulsive and weak Peter was? Peter is not the crème of the crop among his own people. Most likely he had little to no for-mal education. In the most critical moment in Jesus’ life Peter will deny that he knows Jesus and he will also aban-doned him. Truly, what was Jesus thinking? And yet, Je-sus chose him. What did Jesus see in Peter? When Simon is given the name of Peter he does not know the significance of his name and the implications of his call. There is a gap between the man Simon and the man Peter. Jesus looks at Peter as the man he can become in spite of all his imperfections and weaknesses. It is the potential of Peter that Jesus looks to and hopes for. At this point in the gospel the gap between the man Simon and the man Peter is wide, but this gap will become smaller as Peter identifies and appropriates his new identity and dig-nity. This same gap we see in Saul who eventually be-came Paul, the great apostle. This is also the gap we hope to breach when we, by the grace of God, begin to see, identify with and appropriate how God sees, loves and hopes for us. So, what did Jesus see in Peter? Jesus saw potential in Peter and placed his hopes and trust in the man whom Peter could and would become. When we look at the Acts of the Apostles, the letters of Peter and the growth of the early church we know that Jesus’ hopes and trust were not misplaced. Can you see yourself in Peter?

Con el tiempo la reputación de Jesús crecía. Jesús quiere saber lo que la gente dice de él. Por esto les pregunta a sus discípulos lo que la gente comenta a cerca de él. Algunos dicen que

es Juan el Bautista, otros Elías, y algunos más que es Jere-mías o alguno de los profetas. Finalmente, Jesús les pregun-ta a sus discípulos quien dicen ellos que es él y Pedro le res-ponde: " Tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios vivo". Este es un momento muy significante para Pedro y los discípulos. Esta confesión pone en claro que el tan esperado Mesías final-mente está aquí en la persona de Jesús. Jesús les dice a Pe-dro y a sus discípulos que esta revelación viene solamente de Dios y no de ningún ser humano. Lo que Jesús les dice a Pedro y a los discípulos es impresionante: “Y yo te digo a ti que tú eres Pedro y sobre esta piedra edificaré mi Igle-sia.” Pedro, el primero entre iguales, recibe un papel signi-ficante en la comunidad que después llegara a ser la iglesia. Pero, no olvidemos que es Cristo quien construye la iglesia. Pedro no sabía a fondo la plenitud de su confesión acerca de Jesús y cómo el respondería a los eventos que vendrían. Después de leer los evangelios la pregunta que resalta es la siguiente: “¿En que estaría pensando Jesús al decirle esto a Pedro?” ¿Acaso no sabía Jesús lo impulsivo y débil que era Pedro? Pedro no es la crema y nata entre su gente. Es muy posible que Pedro tuviera poca o ninguna educación formal. En el momento más crítico en la vida Jesús Pedro niega co-nocerlo y lo abandona. ¿Verdaderamente, en que estaría pensando Jesús? Pero Jesús lo escogió. ¿Qué vio Jesús en Pedro? Cuando Simón recibe el nombre de Pedro, él no sabe el significado de su nombre y las implicaciones de su voca-ción. Hay una gran brecha entre el hombre Simón y el hom-bre Pedro. Jesús ve a Pedro como el hombre que puede lle-gar a ser, a pesar de sus imperfecciones y debilidades. Es el potencial de Pedro lo que Jesús ve y en lo que pone sus es-peranzas. En este punto del evangelio la brecha entre el hombre Simón y el hombre Pedro es grande, pero la brecha disminuirá en la manera que Pedro se identifique y se apro-pie de su identidad y dignidad. Esta misma brecha la ve-mos también en Saúl, quien después llegará a ser Pablo, el gran apóstol. Esta es también la brecha que esperamos dis-minuir en nosotros, cuando por la gracia de Dios, vemos, nos identificamos y nos apropiamos de como Dios nos ve y ama. ¿Qué fue entonces lo que Jesús vio en Pedro? Jesús vio potencial en Pedro y puso sus esperanzas y confianza en el hombre que Pedro podría y llegaría a ser. Cuando leemos los Hechos de los Apóstoles, las cartas de Pedro y el creci-miento de la iglesia primitiva sabemos que las esperanzas y confianza de Jesús en Pedro no fueron en vano. ¿Y tú, pue-des verte en Pedro?

FAITH FORMATION CORNER – THOUGHTS TO PONDER, WAYS TO LIVE “Jesus said to them. ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter said in reply, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’” (Matt 15:15-16) PURPOSE OF FAITH FORMATION (CATECHESIS) Every week this column reflects on how to live our Catholic faith. We call this formation catechesis, which means to “echo the Word.” And the Word we are referring to is the teachings of Christ and our entire bible. In fact, the National Directory of Catechesis (NDC) clearly defines the purpose of catechesis: “The object of catechesis is communion with Jesus Christ. Catechesis leads people to enter the mystery of Christ, to encounter him, and to discover themselves and the meaning of their lives in him.” (NDC 19) So to be in communion with Jesus we need to have an open relationship with him. We need to not only know who Jesus is, but work on that relationship to determine what God has planned for our lives. Right now we are registering children, teens and adults for a variety of faith formation (catechetical) programs, all of which help us develop and grow in relationship with Jesus. We offer basic catechesis classes for children, a scrip-ture-based program for the middle years, confirmation classes for teens and another one for adults, in addition to bible study for adults. Who do you say that Jesus is? How do you define your relationship with Jesus? Let us help you dis-cover who you are in the light of living with Jesus Christ.

San Gabriel Mission High School Participated

at the AOF Film Festival in Las Vegas

On August 19th San Gabriel Mission High School film students had 3 films being screened at the AOF Film Festi-val. This year the festival took place at the Brenden Theatre at the Palms Hotel, Las Vegas . Students and parents attend-ed the event. According to Mr. Chris Landinguin, Mission’s Film Instructor, “This is our second year submitting films to the AOF film festival. Two of the films were written and produced originally for the Mission Film Festival and as part of their portfolio submission of the IB Film Studies assess-ment.” Mission's IB Film Program is a two year program de-signed to teach the history of film as well as the techniques of good screenwriting and film production. Students get hands on experience in the process of making a film, from pre to post production. Students also get the opportunity to have their work critiqued and awarded at the Mission Film Festival. A select few are chosen by Mr. Landinguin to have their work screened at international film festivals, like AOF. The students get the opportunity to walk the red carpet and participate in a post screening question and answer session as they network with fellow filmmakers from around the world. All students who participated in the festival will receive an IMDB credit, with some students earning multiple credits.

Congratulations to our Royal Court The 2017-2018 Fiesta Royal Court Coronation was held last Saturday in the historic Mission Gardens. Congratulations to the young ladies who have been crowned for this year’s Royal Court. They are Queen Felicia Valdez of Mission High School, First Princess Briana Cruz Guerra of Gabrielino High School (GHS), and Second Princess Stephany Flores Lemus also from GHS. The Court reigns over all Fiesta events and serves as ambassadors of goodwill to the greater community until next year’s Fiesta.

FIESTA 2017 RAFFLE! This year, we feature a 2017 Nissan Versa or $10,000

in cash for the grand prize. The winner of the top prize can choose the car or cash. 2nd prize winner will re-ceive $2,000 in cash, 3rd prize winner will receive $1,000 in cash, and 4th prize winner will receive $500 in cash. Official rules regarding taxes and fees that apply to all winners are on our website. This endeavor can be successful only with your help, so we are counting on you to help us by selling or buying two (2) books of raffle tickets. Tickets are $5 each, and each book contains 10 tickets. You can obtain tickets and return ticket stubs and money to the Fiesta table out-side of church after Sunday masses, the Rectory of-fice, or the School Offices.

FIESTA Scrip Tickets Last year, we transitioned from cash to tickets (scrip) for the Fiesta. The use of tickets removes the need to make change at each food, beverage and game booth, and it essentially speeds up the lines and create a more enjoyable experience for everyone. Pre-sale tickets (each ticket is $1 and is sold in sheets of 20 tickets) for sale at the schools, rectory, at a table out-side of church after all the Masses, and at school dis-missal time during the week. Get your scrip early, and avoid the lines!

FIESTA Pre-Sale Ride Tickets Do you know what will cost 33% more at the Fiesta? Ride Tickets! Before Fiesta starts, you can still pur-chase a sheet of 24 coupons for only $15. At the Fies-ta, they will be $20. Each ride requires 3 to 5 cou-pons. Save money, avoid the lines, and buy your ride tickets today.

Dessert and White Elephant Donations Fiesta needs donations of baked goods including cakes, pies, brownies, cookies, and pastries for the Dessert Booth. Please bring your donations to the Rectory Office starting Thursday night (Aug. 31) at 4 p.m. After 4 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 1), please bring do-nations directly to the Dessert Booth located at the rear of the Rectory in the Intl. Food Court. For the White Elephant Booth, we need your knic-knacks, appliances, tools, books, household items, electronics, gift items, collectables, and other small goods. No clothes or shoes or junk please! You may leave your donations at the Rectory Office.

Volunteer Today We still need your help for Fiesta. Help is needed es-pecially for set up week, for grounds maintenance on the weekend, after closing with the Midnighters, and with the Sunday Night Team.
