JOHN DAVIES Cheshiren jaio zen (Ingalaterra), 1946an.Arte–ikasketak egin zituen Britainia Handiko zenbaiterakundetan, hala nola Manchester College of Art –bertanehun–diseinua eta pintura ikasi zituen–, Slade School ofFine Art edo Gloucestershire College of Art–en (horeskulturan espezializatu zen). Hogeita sei urte zituelarikbere lehenengo erakusketa indibidu ala egin zuen ,Londresen. Bere sorkuntza–ibilbidean zehar, gero etainteres handiagoa azaldu zuen giza gorputzaren zenbaitatal lantzeko, hainbat motatako materialak eta euskarriakerabiliz.

80ko hamarkadan, erakusketa indibidual batzuk eginzituen Londresko Marlborough Fine Art galerian; bertan,zirkuaren munduan inspiratutako tamaina ertainekoeskulturak jarri zituen ikusgai, eta baita marrazkiak etabrontzezko buruak ere, hainbat formatutan. Daviesek beregaraian nagusi izan diren moda edo estiloetatik apartegauzatu du bere obra. Artistak mendez mende aldatu ezden interes formal bat bilatzen du figurazioan. Azkenurteotan, erretratu eskultoriko batzuk egin ditu, enkarguz,eta formatu txikiko serie eskultoriko berriak ere egin ditu.Orobat, marrazketak ere rol garrantzitsua jokatu du berarensorkuntza–ibilbidean, bai adierazpide bezala eta baiberaren eskulturarentzako ikerketa–bide bezala.

John Daviesek erakusketa indibidual eta kolektibougari egin ditu. Azpimarratzekoak dira Bilboko Arte EderMuseoak eta Valentziako Arte Modernoaren Institutuak2004–2005 urteetan gauzatutakoak. Beraren obra ospehandiko erakunde batzuetako bildumen zati da; adibidez:British Council, Tate Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum,Japoniako Tokushima Museum, Hagako Beelden aan ZeeMuseoa edo lehen aipatutakoak, hots, Valentziako ArteModernoaren Institutua eta Bilboko Arte Eder Museoa.

JOHN DAVIES nace en Cheshire (Inglaterra) en el año1946. Realiza estudios de arte en diversas institucionesde Gran Bretaña como el Manchester College of Art ,donde estudia diseño textil y pintura, la Slade School ofFine Art o el Gloucesterhire College of Art, donde seespecializa en escultura. A los veintiséis años realiza suprimera exposición individual en Londres. A lo largo desu trayectoria creativa va mostrando un creciente interéspor trabajar sobre distintas partes del cuerpo humano endistintos materiales y soportes.

En los años 80 realiza varias exposiciones individualesen la Galería Marlborough Fine Art de Londres en las queexpone esculturas de tamaño medio inspiradas en elmundo circense, dibujos y cabezas de bronce en distintosformatos. Su obra se encuentra al margen de modas oes tilos predominantes. El artista busca en la figuraciónun interés formal que no ha variado a lo largo de los siglos.En los últimos años ha realizado varios retratos escultóricospor encargo y ha desarrollado nuevas series escultóricasen pequeño formato. Asimismo, el dibujo siempre hajugado un papel importate en su trayectoria creativa comomedio de expresión y como medio de investigación parasu escultura.

John Davies ha realizado numerosas exposicionesindiv iduales y colectivas. D estacan las muestrasdesarrolladas por el Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao yel Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno en los años 2004–2005. Su obra forma parte de las colecc iones deprestigiosas instituciones como el British Council, la TateGallery, el Victoria and Albert Museum, el TokushimaMuseum de Japón, el Museo Beelden aan Zee de la Hayao los anteriormente mencionados Instituto Valencianode Arte Moderno y Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao.

El taller se centrará en la sombra y su uso en el dibujo.Para Davies: “lo más importante es el dibujo, ya que puedodescribir un lugar completo. Esto no se puede hacer enescultura, no puedes colocar a alguien cruzando uncampo, a menos que coloques la figura en un campo. Laescultura parece imponer un área alrededor de ella misma,una distancia a la que uno se coloca y desde la que mira.Me gusta añadir apuntes sobre el espacio o el tiempo, osobre una actividad”.

Y en referencia a la sombra, afirma: “Siempre me hagustado el hecho de que las figuras tienen sombras quese escapan de su órbita, por la habitación, por la pared,etc. Es como dirigir a las figuras, o como actores queensayan un drama”.

Eskulturak eremu bat jartzen du bere inguruan,nonbait, ikusleak gordetzen duen distantzia bat, zeinetikbegiratzen baitu. Gustukoa dut espazioari edo denborarib uruzko apunteak eran stea, edota jarduera batiburuzkoak”.

Eta itzala dela-eta, hauxe dio: “beti gustatu zait irudiekberen orbitatik ihes egiten duten itzalak izatea: gelatik,hormatik, eta abar. Irudiak zuzentzea bezalakoa da, edodrama baten probak egiten dituzten antzezleak bezalakoa”.

JOHN DAVIES was born in Cheshire (England) in 1946. At the age of twenty-six he had his firstindividual exhibition in London. Over the course of hiscreative life his interest has centred increasingly on partsof the human body in different materials and media.

In the nineteen eighties he had several solo showsat the Marlborough Fine Art Gallery in London in whichhe exhibited medium-sized sculptures inspired by theworld of the circus, as well as drawings and bronze headsin d ifferent formats. H is work h as always b eenindependent of fashion or prevailing styles, as he hassought a formal interest in the figure that has not variedover centuries. In recent years he has made variouscommissioned portrait sculptures and has carried out aseries of new small-scale sculptures. Drawing has alsoplayed a key role throughout his creative life as a meansof expression and a means of research for his sculpture.

John Davies has taken part in numerous solo andgroup exhibitions. Among the most notable were theshows held at the Museo de Bellas Artes, Bilbao and theInstituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno in 2004–2005. Hiswork is part of the collections of prestigious institutionssuch as the British Council, the Tate Gallery, the Victoriaand Albert Museum, the Tokushima Museum in Japan,the Beelden aan Zee Museum in The Hague or theaforementioned Instituto Valenciano de Arte Modernoand Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao.

The workshop is centred on shade and its use in drawing.For Davies, “the most important thing is drawing, sinceI can describe a complete place. This can’t be done insculpture, you cannot place someone crossing a field,unless you actually put the figure in a field. Sculptureseems to impose an area around itself, a distance whereyou place yourself and where you look from. I like to addnotes on space or time, or on an activity”.

And referring to shade, he states, “I’ve always likedthe fact that figures have shadows that fly out of theirorbit, around the room, up the wall, etc. It’s like directingthe figures, or like actors rehearsing a play”.
