Dream Act Struggle Continues For over a month young people at the University of Texas San Antonio were on a hunger strike to pass the Dream Act and speak to Senator Hutchinson. After the bill passed the House of representatives, the senate voted 55 to 41, against the bill on Dec. 18, 2010.

The DREAM ACTivist have not lost hope and continue their struggle. Dec. 28th was their first supper at

Jefferson United Methodist Church where hunger strikers finally ate and enjoyed the company of their supporters.

Como tradición, cada año se lleva acabo cantarle Las Mañanitas y también tener danzantes y convivencia con la

comunidad. Para Fuerza Unida, nuestra madre de Guadalupe ha sido devoción de esperanza para seguir luchando por justicia con dignidad. El rosario fue dedicado, el 10 de Diciembre 2010 a todos los

jóvenes estudiantes que están luchando por el DREAM Act. Mas de 25 personas atendieron el rosario. Muchas gracias al Diacono Arturo García de la Iglesia San Lorenzo, a Maria Antonieta Berriozabal por presentar su libro a la Virgen, a Bianca Poser por su canto de Las Mañanitas y a La Danza Azteca y Ray por su

Fuerza Unida continues to provide groceries to about 60 families within the community and from our membership base. Distribution of food boxes will take place at our monthly membership meeting which is scheduled for Tuesday, January 25 immediately after the meeting.

December 10th, 2010 to all the young students that are fighting for the DREAM Act. More than 25 people attended the rosary. Many thanks to Deacon Arturo Garcia from San Lorenzo Church, Maria Antonietta Berriozabal for presenting her book to the Virgen de Guadalupe, Bianca Poser for

singing Las Mañanitas , and Danza Azteca y Ray for the presentation of the danzantes.

Each year, the tradition of singing Las Mañanitas is celebrated with danzantes and a gathering of community members. For Fuerza Unida, our Mother of Guadalupe has been a devotion of hope in order to continue the struggle for justice with dignity.

FUERZA UNIDA’S 21ST BIRTHDAY

L A F U E R Z A U N I D A

Fuerza Unida will have been open for 21 years on January 16, 2011. In the over 20 years that the organization has been open they have: sustained jobs for women in the community through the Sewing Cooperative, grown the membership every year, increased the amount of food and families assisted by our food pantry program, increased number of members that attend monthly meetings, increased number of young people in the summer program, increased amount of scholarship given to young people and finally we have an increased number of volunteers that have committed themselves to assisting Fuerza Unida in its growth. Thank you to all of our members for your constant help and support these past 21 years. We hope to continue growing and learning with our community in order to stay in our community for many more years.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Fuerza Unida cumple 21 años de estar abiertos el 16 de Enero, 2011. En los mas de 20 años que a existido la organización a: mantenido trabajos para mujeres de la comunidad en La Cooperativa de costura, aumentado cada año nuestra membresía, aumentado también la cantidad de comida y familias que podemos asistir en nuestro programa de distribución de comida, aumentado el numero de miembros que asisten a la junta de membresía, aumentado el numero de jóvenes que asisten al programa del verano, aumentado la cantidad de becas que les podemos dar a los jóvenes y finalmente han aumentado el numero de voluntarios que se han comprometido a ayudar a Fuerza Unida crecer. Gracias a todos nuestros miembros por su constante ayuda y apoyo estos pasados 21 años. Esperamos seguir creciendo y aprendiendo con nuestra comunidad para seguir en nuestra comunidad muchos años mas.

Some of our goals for this year include: Increasing our membership base and member contributions, offering more workshops on immigration, worker’s rights, health care, Medicaid and other senior citizen assistance, college prep and scholarship information for youth, increase advertising and sales of sewing cooperative merchandise, and complete a strategic plan with staff of Fuerza Unida. After our Strategic planning we will share our more measurable goals with everyone in hopes that they benefit all members and Fuerza Unida’s growth and vision.

Fuerza Unida was formed in 1990 when one of the

Levi’s Strauss factories on the South side of San

Antonio closed, leaving over 1,150 workers without

jobs and with unjust severance pay. The women

organized themselves to demand fair compensation

and better working conditions from Levi’s. Through

organizing efforts, Fuerza Unida has become involved

in many other social struggles, working on issues of

women’s empowerment for self-sufficiency, women’s

and labor rights, immigration, environmental issues

and health education.

Fuerza Unida empowers women workers and their

families to achieve social,economic and environmental

justice through education, organizing and advocacy.

We host a sewing cooperative, food catering, youth

leadership program, membership, education program

and food pantry.
