    ResumenEl presente estudio evalu las condiciones econ-micas, sociales y acadmicas en una muestra de 176 estudiantes de nuevo ingreso (aproximadamente el 50% de la matrcula) a una institucin de educacin superior del Noroeste de Mxico. Se aplic un paque-te de evaluacin conformado por 7 secciones: 1) da-tos sociodemogrficos, 2) trayectoria escolar, 3) nivel de conocimiento del mbito disciplinario, 4) dominio de programas de cmputo, 5) cultura general, 6) apti-tud para la ciencia y 7) comprensin de lectura en el idioma ingls. Se discuten los resultados comparn-dolos con una muestra equivalente de una institucin de educacin superior del centro de Mxico, con un programa de estudios con orientacin equivalente.Palabras clave: estudiantes universitarios, caracters-ticas sociodemogrficas, trayectoria acadmica, apti-tud para la ciencia.

    Characterization of freshmen to the University of Sonora: a comparative studyThe present study evaluated the economic, academic and social conditions in a sample of 176 freshmen (50% of the total registration) in a university located
