Existe una tendencia a que el primer producto utilizable, perotodavía rudimentario, de una tecnología nueva se afiance. Hellamado a esto el fenómeno QWERTY.
La primera hilera de las teclas alfabéticas de la máquina deescribir corriente dice QWERTY. Para mí esto simboliza la maneraen que la tecnología, demasiado a menudo, puede servir no comouna fuerza de progreso, sino para mantener las cosasestancadas. La disposición QWERTY no tiene ningunaexplicación racional, sólo histórica. Fue introducida en respuesta aun problema de la primera época de la máquina de escribir: lasteclas solían atascarse. La idea fue minimizar el problema decolisión separando aquellas teclas que aparecían frecuentementeen secuencia inmediata. Apenas unos años después, elmejoramiento general de la tecnología eliminó el problema deatascamiento, pero QWERTY subsistió... Estamos en proceso deatrincherarnos en un anacronismo, preservando prácticas que notienen ninguna base racional más allá de sus raíces históricas enun período anterior del desarrollo tecnológico y teórico.
