GRADO COMPARATIVO: IGUALDAD EINFERIORIDAD

Igualdad
John is as tall as Peter
Ausencia de Igualdad (= Inferioridad)
John and Peter are not so/as tall as Thomas
Inferioridad
John and Peter are less tall than Thomas

1. Hombres y mujeres: estereotipos
Hombres y mujeres, ¿somos iguales?...
Men are less romantic than women
Men are not so romantic as women
Men are not as romantic as women
Women are more romantic than men
When at home, men are less busy than women
When at home, men are not so busy as women
When at home, men are not as busy as women
When at home, women are always busier than men
When packing women are less practical than men
When packing women are not so practical as men
When packing women are not as practical as men
When packing men are more practical than women
ADJETIVOS CORTOS ADJETIVOS LARGOS
adjetivo + -ER + THAN MORE + adjetivo + THAN
TALL: Peter is tall er than John
(Pedro es más alto que John)
NICE: Mary is nicer than Jane
Mary es más agradable que Jane)
INTELLIGENT: You are more intelligentthan me
(Tú eres más inteligente que yo)
EXPENSIVE: This is more expensive
5 de 21
YOUNG: She is younger than
you
(Ella es más joven que tú)
(Éso es más caro que ésto)
SENSITIVE: Jane is more sensitivethan Susan
(Jane es más sensible que Susan)
Fíjate en la palabra THAN. En la estructura de los comparativos de superioridad nousamos THAT sino THAN.
She is more cleven that Peter
She is more clever than Peter
Adjetivos irregulares
Algunos adjetivos tienen comparativos irregulares:
Good: Better
Bad: Worse
Thicker than
More thick than
¿Es esta frase correcta?: John is thicker than Paul
No
Si
El comparativo de superioridad de difficult es
More difficult than

Men, Women and the Working Place
When we think of "diversity" we always picture different colours, different languages, different cultures... and we, almost always, forget something really important: Thedifference between men and women at the workplace No doubt this is just one more case of discrimination; perhaps not so obvious as thoseconcerning colour or language or culture... but discrimination, no doubt!
Many years ago there were "male" and "female" jobs depending on responsibility, physical condition, personal influences... Nowadays men and women can apply andperform any type of work. Our society does not accept discrimination by means of sex;at least not openly but... are men and women treated the same in all the workplaces? Are they paid the same salary for the same job? Is pregnancy still a handicap to get ajob?
These and many other similar questions for which the answers are, not always, theones we would like to hear make us think that there is still a long way to cover beforemen and women will be absolutely equal.
Diversity is...
to have been born in a different country

Ejemplo : I work here (enunciativa afirmativa)
I do not work here (enunciativa negativa)
Do you work here? (interrogativa)
el propio verbo To Do se necesita a sí mismo para formar la negativa y lainterrogativa
Ejemplo : He does his homework every day.
He doesn't do his homework every day
Ejemplo: John can speak German
John can not speak German
Can John speak German?
He is my friend
He is not my friend
Is he your friend?
Ejemplo: That old lady lives near my house (ponemos OLD delante de LADY)
Those old ladies live near my house (OLD no lleva plural aunque LADIESsea plural)
Ejemplo Yesterday I was too tired to go to the party
I was too tired to go to the party yesterday
Ejemplo: He is always tired (detrás del verbo auxiliar, en este caso TO BE -is)
They always come on Fridays (delante del verbo ordinario -COME)
Ejemplo : Peter sang the song happily in the bathroom yesterday evening.

3.2. Expresando acuerdo o desacuerdo
I AGREE or I DISAGREE.

Sexual Equality
Imagen tomada de FICOD TV - 2009
Look at the picture:
These men are talking in a TV programme. It is a discussion. Menhave important things to say. Well educated wise men are ready toexpress their points of view. It is important for our society. They areexpert on the theme discussed. The audience is probably interested inlistening to what they have to say, but.....where are women?

El hombre: Man / era:was / el:the / más:........./ fuerte: ........

If I were a boy"
If I were a boyEven just for a day
I'd roll outta bed in the morningAnd throw on what I wanted then go
Drink beer with the guysAnd chase after girls
I'd kick it with who I wantedAnd I'd never get confronted for it.
Cause they'd stick up for me.
[Chorus]If I were a boy
I think I could understandHow it feels to love a girl
I swear I'd be a better man.I'd listen to her
Cause I know how it hurtsWhen you lose the one you wantedCause he's taken you for granted
And everything you had got destroyed
If I were a boyI could turn off my phoneTell everyone it's broken
So they'd think that I was sleepin' aloneI'd put myself first
And make the rules as I goCause I know that she'd be faithful
Waitin' for me to come home (to come home)
(Chorus)
It's a little too late for you to come backSay its just a mistake
Think I'd forgive you like thatIf you thought I would wait for you
You thought wrong
(Chorus)
But you're just a boy

Description: We need to be supportive, not admonishing, Carter says.
Transcript: I think, we need to be realistic with ourselves. And we need to be supportive, you know,of developing countries, so they can do that. Like, I don’t blame them for looking dead at America, and everybody else is saying, “Excuse me? You had the right to pollute all your lives and, suddenly, you’re saying, no, we can’t?” No. But we do need to be really supportive of them, so that they’renot making the same foolish mistakes that we made. So I think that that’s really going to be theway out of it.
1. Comienza con la expresión "I think..." (creo, opino..)
3. Cambia a primera persona "I" cuando va a incorporar una opinión muypersonal.
4. Utiliza un lenguaje coloquial "I don't blame them for looking dead at America"
5. Reproduce lenguaje real en "Estilo Directo" (rasgo coloquial).
"I don’t blame them for looking dead at America"
"You had the right to pollute all your lives and, suddenly, you’re saying, no, wecan’t?”
"I think that that’s really going to be the way out of it"

4. Women's Rights
Dominio público de Alexander Bassano
Women's Rights in the 19th century UK
In 1840 , Queen Victoria is on the throne ofEngland. She is head of the world's most powerfulnation, her image and her influence is everywherein the world.
But closer to home the influence of ordinarywomen over their own world was more limited.Let's see some details:
Marriage : Women could not get a civildivorce. In 1857 , a new law introducedthe possibility of it. This law also allowedwomen to retain their earnings at work, giving them the control over their ownincome. They had to wait until 1939 with anew law that allowed them to ask for thecustody of children after separation.
Study and work : It was almostimpossible for women to study at universityor get a job after it. They had to wait until1874 , when they founded "The London School of Medicine for Women"
for the medical education of women. Then, in 1878 , London University wasthe first to give women degrees on the same terms as men.
Vote: At this time women didn't have the right to vote. In 1893 , NewZealand was the first country in the world to have universal suffrage. Theconcept of a New Woman and "the feminist movement" appears. In 1928 ,British women finally got voting rights.

Spanish women's equality in the 21st century
The most recent Spanish equality legislation:
The Spanish parliament passed an affirmative actionlaw. The measure is as good as new because theobjective was to have more qualified women inpolitics, also in big companies among the mostimportant managers. The Law of Equality asks political parties to have no
less than 40% female candidates, except in the smallest towns. Itincludes a measure ordering larger companies to negotiate "equalityplans" to promote women.
Prime Minister Jose LuisRodriguez Zapatero said: "In myopinion this legislation will dojustice to Spanish women andsociety", "I am sure that todayis the first day of a differentsociety," he added during thedebate in parliament.
Mr Zapatero has madewomen's rights and genderequality one of the most centralpolicy objective of hisgovernment.

and Women throughout History
El título no deja de ser algo
engañoso ya que la información
que aquí vamos a daros gira,
fundamentalmente, alrededor
de la vida e inquietudes de
mujeres que han destacado por
su faceta pública en países de
habla inglesa o de otras que
hacen su aportación de manera
anónima pero que sin su fuerza
y su esfuerzo los avances y
conquistas por la igualdad
desaparecerían.
En todas las épocas, han
surgido figuras que han
intentado romper con esa idea
de que nacer mujer es nacer
con menos oportunidades.
Hemos elegido a dos mujeres
que ya han hecho Historia y
que, en nuestra opinión, deben
ser ejemplos para encontrar el
auténtico camino hacia la
igualdad.
Las mujeres que hemos elegido
son: Mary Robinson y
Emmeline PankhurstY aunque
centremos nuestro estudio en
la vida y significación de Mary
y Emmeline no debemos
olvidar que tanto una como
otra contaron con la
colaboración de su familia,
empezando por sus padres y
hermanos y siguiendo con sus
maridos.

1. Mary Robinson y Emmeline Pankhurst
Mary Robinson
Mary was born in 1944 in Ballina (Ireland) . Her father was a doctor
and so was her mother. She was the only girl in a family of five.
She attended school in Dublin and then she studied law at Trinity
College in the same city. She went to Harvard where she earned a
Masters in Law. In 1969 she became the youngest professor of law at
Trinity College.
She married Nicholas Robinson, a Dublin solicitor, and they had
three children. Her marriage at first met familial disapproval
because her husband was a Protestant.
Some years later she became a famous lawyer and member of the
Irish Senate (1969-1989). She won the 1990 presidential election as
an Independent candidate nominated by the Irish Labour Party.
Robinson has been Honorary President of Oxfam International since
2002, she is the president of the International Institute for
Environment and Development (IIED) and is also a founding member
and Chair of the Council of Women World Leaders. Robinson's newest
project is the Ethical Globalization Initiative, which promotes fair
trade and development, more humane migration policies and better
responses to HIV/AIDS in Africa. The organization also promotes
women's leadership and supports capacity building and good
governance in developing countries.
In 2004, she received an Award from Amnesty International for her
work in promoting human rights and in 2006 she was awarded the
prize “Principe de Asturias” of Social Sciences.

Sharing housework
Letter sent to a magazine by Maria Smith on 28th March 2002
Hello, I'm a mother of three young children who has recently returned to study
in order to be prepared to go "back to work"as soon as I find a suitable job.
I am an educator in the area of gender equity and I'm studying issues that
confront women returning to work. The biggest of these, and for all mothers,
seems to be how to get Dad to take on a fair load of housework.
My husband is great at playing with the kids or taking them to the park, or the
cinema or even taking them to bed and telling stories before they fall asleep! but
I'm feeling really frustrated about convincing him that he needs to think of other
details, those that make housework boring and repetitive.
I know there's an enormous quantity of literature about finding the work home
balance but I can't find much which takes up that issue in a practical,
constructive, educational manner. So... Can you, please, give me ideas about
how can one teach partners to share domestic responsibilities - like cleaning the
toilet?
Thanks for your responses
And here are some of the answers she has received. Some are serious but others are... just jokes!

Surprise! Men do as much work as women do!
Everyone knows that women work more than men. In fact, most of them combinework at the home and at the office. But according to a recent study, this is just a myth, because it's just not true that women carry a heavier load.
Three economists, Michael Burda of Humboldt University in Berlin, Daniel Hamermeshof the University of Texas, and Philippe Weil of the Free University of Brussels prepareda questionnaire that was passed to people in 25 countries all over the world. Some ofthe countries are rich, like the United States and Germany, some are poor, like Beninand Madagascar, and some are in the middle, like Hungary, Mexico, and Slovenia. Thequestions were about how people spent the hours of their day.
In most rich countries men spend more time on market work –work outside the housewith a salary- than women and women spend more time doing housework and childcarethan men; but if we add the hours that men and women spend doing marketwork andhousework we will get very similar results.
While men and women spend about the same time working in rich countries, womendo work more than men in poor countries. And the gap widens as countries get poorer.
