NEW YORK, NY- Sesame Street is excited to announce the arrival of a new Hispanic neighbor, “Armando,” played by actor Ismael Cruz Córdova. Ismael will make his debut as “Mando” when Sesame Street’s 44th season premieres September 16, 2013 on PBS KIDS. Produced by the nonprofit educational organization Sesame Workshop, the new season will have a special focus on Hispanic heritage with many new songs and lessons.


SPRINGDALE, AR- The Hispanic Women’s Organization of Arkansas (HWOA) announced its 2013

scholarship recipients on Saturday May 4th. Since 2000, HWOA has awarded 280 scholarships worth a total of $162,500. “HWOA’s goal is to increase the college

enrollment of Hispanic students,” said Margarita Solorzano, executive director of HWOA.

on the tax rolls and allowing them to participate fully and legally in the U.S. economy.

balance the budget and create American jobs.

The Ch ie f Ac tua ry of the Socia l Secur i ty Administration estimates that the proposed bipartisan immigration reform bill will allow about 8 million undocumented individuals, many of whom already work in the underground economy,

to become legal and pay taxes. As a result, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, the legislation will add more than 6.5 million taxpayers over a decade, generating more than $275 billion in revenue for Social Security.

LITTLE ROCK, AR - In just days, schools across the state will close for the summer and Arkansas residents will start hitting the road for vacations or visits with family and friends.

In advance of the busy summer driving season, Attorney General Dustin M c D a n i e l i s s u e d t h i s consumer alert today with advice for families planning to pack up the car to travel, whether during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend or at other times during the summer.

“ Va c a t i o n s a r e a n e s s e n t i a l s u m m e r t i m e activity for many Arkansas consumers,” McDaniel said. “Whether they are traveling to a family reunion, the beach or to other destinations, consumers should make safety their top priority so that they can have an enjoyable time with family and friends.” McDaniel advised consumers to first have their vehicles serviced before embarking on a summer trip if the vehicle is due for regularly scheduled maintenance. Otherwise, he encouraged Arkansas drivers to keep the following tips in

mind ahead of their travels:Check fluids. Drivers

should make sure levels of brake and transmission fluids are normal, and should make sure that oil isn’t low. Oil should appear clean on the stick and be at a sufficient level. If oil levels are low, take the vehicle in for service.

Check what’s under the hood. Examine the battery and cables for any cracks, corrosion or dirt. Remember that summer weather can shorten the life of a battery, so replace it if necessary before a long road trip. Inspect the radiator and hoses for crack and

leaks, and, if necessary, change the air filter. Thunderstorms are almost always a possibility every summer afternoon, so consider investing in new windshield wiper blades.

Remember that summer heat increases tire pressure, so check and see whether inflation levels are consistent with what’s recommended in the owners’ manual.

The report estimates that the reform bill will have the result of adding 3.2 million jobs over a decade and increasing gross domestic product by 1.63% by 2024, according to the Wall Street Journal.

It is not surprising that allowing undocumented immigrants to integrate into U.S. society will result in a net economic benefit for the U.S., as many other studies

have noted. Immigrants tend to be entrepreneurial and create more job-creating businesses than the average population. Generally, they also tend to be younger and healthier, which means they will pay more taxes and use

public benefits like health care and Social Security less. As a result, the Social Security Administration noted that the “net effect of this bill on the long range OASDI actuarial

balance will be positive,” using the acronym for Old Age, Survivor and Disability Insurance program.

The Social Security A d m i n i s t r a t i o n r e p o r t cont ras t s wi th a s tudy released earlier this week

by the Heritage Foundation, saying that the cost of allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for legal status would be $6.3 trillion. The Heritage Foundation

report is contrary to a broad consensus of policy analysts, from both the left and right, stating that reform would have a positive effect on the economy, and has been harshly criticized for flows in methodology. One of the

co-authors, Jason Richwine, has also been accused of racial bias.

The Social Security Administration notes that, in addition to improving

the U.S . economy and helping balance the budget, immigration reform will also help address the problem of i l l ega l immigra t ion through border control and employment verification. The letter states that these

measures “will reduce the number entering the country without authorization by about half a million per year by the time the measures are fully implemented.”

I m m i g r a n t s a r e a positive force in the U.S. economy, and by allowing undocumented immigrants a l ready in the U.S . to participate fully, immigration reform will help balance the budget and create American jobs. Reform will also help address the under lying causes of undocumented immigration flows. It is this balanced approach to legalization and enforcement that will create an effective immigration system that will foster prosperity and diversity.

El 14 de junio se celebra el 236o aniversario de la bandera de los EE.UU. En 1777, el Congreso Continental adoptó el modelo de las Estrellas y las rayas como la bandera nacional, casi un año después de la Declaración de la Independencia fue firmada. Aunque el cuatro de julio se celebra tradicionalmente como el nacimiento de América, a partir de la década de 1880, muchas escuelas y grupos de ciudadanos abogaron por la adopción de una fiesta nacional para conmemorar la bandera de los EE.UU. Inspirado por más de treinta años de celebraciones locales y estatales, el presidente Woodrow Wilson estableció oficialmente el Día de la Bandera en 1916. No fue sino hasta 1949, sin embargo, que el presidente Harry Truman firmó una ley del Congreso con la designación del 14 de junio como el Día de la Bandera Nacional. The best thing you can do over the next few months is arm your children with tools to stay safe. No child will ever be accident-free, though we keep a careful eye on them. There are measures parents can

take to lower the risk. M a k e s u r e y o u r k i d s are hydrated,

wear sun block, protective padding when riding bikes and ensure they know when to cross the street.

Sun and Heat protection - Letting your children know about the importance of sun block is a top priority during the summer. According to

the American Academy of Dermatology, children should stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., these are not only the hottest hours, but the brightest as well. The Mayo Clinic suggests applying a broad spectrum sun block SPF 15 or higher 15-30 minutes prior to sun exposure. Reapplication is necessary and should be done often, around every hour or so; especially when children are sweating or

swimming. Other safety tips include wearing sunglass and hats to protect eyes,

light or reflective clothing to avoid overheating and always finding a shaded place to sit. These precautions can help protect your family from heat exhaustion, heat stroke and even skin cancer.

Bicycle Safety - Children who ride bikes should wear a helmet to help reduce the possibility of head injuries. According to the International Bicycle Fund, head injuries from bicycling are the most common cause of cyclist

deaths. P a r t o f s a f e cycling is staying away from busy roads, staying on the sidewalk, and riding the way traffic is moving.

Water Safety - If your children do not know how to swim, be sure to enforce the use of lifejackets around bodies of water. Another great way to increase water safety is to either teach your children how to swim or enroll them in swimming lessons. Knowledge and experience are especially important in water safety practices.

constantly evolving and has a long-standing history of model ing a d iverse community. As producers were identifying the realities of the changing American population, it was important to represent that diversity in the new addition to the cast. “Armando,” a writer from Puerto Rico, will join Maria (played by Sonia Manzano), Luis (Emilio Delgado) and Muppets™ Rosita and Ovejita (Carmen Osbahr) as part of Sesame Street’s bilingual community.

“We knew as soon as we met Ismael that he was the perfect addition to our neighborhood,” said Carol-Lynn Parente, Executive Producer of Sesame Street. “Like his character ‘Mando,’ Ismael represents a culturally fluid and deeply layered new generation of Hispanic-Americans. He has a passion for creative expression and a warmth that comes right through the camera.”

The journey to find the new cast member began in August 2012 when hundreds

of young hopefuls turned up for Sesame Street’s first-ever open casting call held in New York City. Actors showcased their Spanish

fluency, comedic timing and vocal abilities during a day of auditions and subsequent call-backs. Ismael’s incredible charm and charisma won him

the opportunity of a lifetime. “I am honestly still in

shock,” said Ismael. “I am incredibly proud to be a part of a show that acknowledges

and celebrates diversity so whole-heartedly and am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to represent Latino-Americans on Sesame

Street.”A native of Puerto Rico,

Ismael holds a BFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Prior to joining Sesame Street, he landed a recurring role as “Jimmy Patrick” on the Golden Globe winning CBS drama, The Good Wife and has acted in several films including In the Blood, White Alligator and Chaser. A well-rounded actor, audiences and critics alike have also welcomed Ismael on the stage with an HOLA and ACE award for his performance as “Julio Cesar” in the off-Broadway play, La Luz De un Cigarrillo, by Marco Antonio Rodriguez.

Beyond t e l ev i s ion , Sesame Street fans can expect to watch and interact with “Mando” this summer and fall through Sesame Street’s various social channels including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Searching through that proverbial haystack, however, is even more difficult when you’re forced to compete against hundreds of others doing exactly the same. But finding a job, and doing so quickly, doesn’t need to be so difficult. The following tips should help cut down on

the trials and tribulations of looking for work.

· Get organized. Keep track of your job-searching efforts. Finding a job can be a drawn out process, as recruiters typically must sift through large applicant pools before setting up any interviews. Keep a separate file on all jobs you’ve applied to, complete with a job description and copy of the cover letter and resume you sent to that particular job. Keep these files easily accessible and organized, as you never know when you might be contacted by a prospective employer.

· Network. Recognizing you’re not the only one looking

for a job is essential to finding one you really want. Recruiters’ inboxes are overflowing with the resumes o f p o t e n t i a l appl ican ts , so you need an edge. Where most job seekers find the most success is through word-of -mouth . F a m i l y ,

friends, former co-workers or anyone else you

have regular contact with outside of your current office can all be great sources of information when looking for a job.

· Know what you have to offer.

Examine your strengths and

work on

c o m m u n i c a t i n g t h o s e s t r e n g t h s . E f f e c t i v e l y explaining what you do best is your best chance of landing that dream job, so practice illustrating how your skills apply to each position you’re seeking and how those skills can benefit the company.

· Customize your letters and resumes. No two jobs are the same, so no two sets of cover letters and resumes should be the same, either. Tailor each letter and resume to the specific job you’re applying to. In particular, cover letters should emphasize specific skills that might apply to each job. Save all cover letters and resumes under

different filenames as well, as you’ll want extra copies of each should you be granted an interview.

· S t a y m o t i v a t e d . P a r t i c u l a r l y i f y o u ’ r e unemployed or working part-time until you can get back into your field, the process of looking for a job can be defeating. Tales of finding a job early on in the process do exist, but more often than not the process requires sending out plenty of resumes and dealing with lots of rejection. It’s a process that everyone goes through, not just you. Keep working hard and you’ll find that, in due time, opportunity will come knocking.

L I T T L E R O C K , AR - More than 10,000 new Arkansas Academic Cha l l enge Scho la r sh ip recipients were notified Monday of their awards from the Arkansas Department of Higher Education.

Based on academic achievement, the Challenge scholarship , commonly k n o w n a s t h e l o t t e r y scholarship, provides new 2013 recipients with funds to offset the costs of attending any Arkansas university pursuant to Act 234 of 2013 of the Arkansas General Assembly: $2,000 freshman year, $3,000 sophomore year, $4,000 junior year and

$5,000 senior year, as long as renewal requirements are met. Those attending a two-year college will receive $2,000 for freshman and sophomore year. Previous recipients of the scholarship will continue to receive the amounts stipulated in their original award.

“We apprecia te the members of the 89th General Assembly for working to try and ensure the long term stability of the program and make the most prudent decisions to help serve the most Arkansans possible with the scholarship,” said Shane Broadway, interim director at ADHE. “This money will help Arkansas families better shoulder the burden of tuition

and fees and help educate more of our workforce for the future.”

There are still more than 6,000 incomplete applications for students who are likely eligible for the scholarship, Broadway added, and those students have until June 1 to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the YOUniversal scholarship application at www.adhe.edu, and provide high school transcripts and ACT scores.

T h e A r k a n s a s Depa r tmen t o f H ighe r Education offers more than 20 additional scholarship programs. The deadline to apply for this academic year is June 1.

The Arkansas Department

of Higher Education is responsible for carrying out the policy directives of the AHECB, approving and reviewing college and university academic programs and developing funding recommendations for the state’s 11 public universities and 22 public two-year colleges as well as several other post-secondary entities.

In addition, the agency is responsible for distributing approximately $170 million annually from state revenues and lottery funds intended to ease the financial burden of students seeking an education beyond high school.
