As St. Petersburg was being developed Tsar Peter the Great ordered Nobel families to establish a residence in the new capital city of St. Petersburg. One of the First Nobel families to come to St. Petersburg was the Menshikov’s who built the Menshikov Palace that would be more lavish than the Tsars Palaces.

The Marble Palace was commissioned by Empress Catherine the Great for her favorite Count, Grigory Orlov. The palace was designed and built between 1768 and 1785 by the Italian-born architect Antonio Rinaldi.
