Breve información general sobre Escocia
Escocia forma parte del Reino Unido de la Gran Bretaña y de
Irlanda del Norte desde el Acta de Unión de 1707 y desde
entonces ha jugado un papel muy importante tanto en la
política como en la economía de las islas. El momento álgido
de la influencia escocesa se produce durante el siglo XIX,
viéndose reflejado en su contribución a las artes de las
ciencias y las letras con personajes de la talla de James Clerk
Maxwell, William Thomson, James Watt, Walter Scott o
Arthur Conan Doyle entre otros muchos nombres que
vienen a sumarse, a otros escoceses de renombre de los
siglos anteriores como Adam Smith.
La Universidad de Edimburgo ya en aquellos años era un fiel
reflejo de su posición actual y constituía un faro en el
conocimiento europeo donde cursaron sus estudios
alumnos de la notoriedad de Charles Darwin. La importancia
de la Universidad de Edimburgo es tal que han pasado por
sus aulas, bien como personal docente o como alumnado,
21 premios nobel y año tras año, es clasificada dentro del
top 20 en las clasificaciones mundiales.
Otros datos más básicos a tener en cuenta sobre Escocia son los siguientes:

Religión: Existe libertad de culto en Escocia y en el resto del Reino Unido. La religión
mayoritaria en Escocia es el cristianismo y dentro de este grupo, la Church of Scotland
(Presbiteriana) representa el 32% de la población. La Iglesia Católica Romana es el segundo
grupo más numeroso con el 16%, seguidos a cierta distancia por diversos grupos
episcopalianos y bautistas.
Economía: Las principales industrias escocesas son los servicios financieros, el petróleo y gas
natural, la biotecnología, la micro-electrónica y el turismo aunque otros sectores como el
energético con las inversiones en renovables, el naval o el de la defensa suponen un aporte
importante para la economía de la región.

Sanidad: El National Health Service (NHS) provee de asistencia gratuita a todos los ciudadanos
británicos y europeos. En este caso, los estudiantes deben de inscribirse en el centro de salud
más próximo a su lugar de residencia y seleccionar el doctor de cabecera o General
Practitioner (GP) que le sea asignado.
Seguro médico: La asistencia sanitaria privada es posible en Escocia mediante compañías
británicas (BUPA entre otras) o españolas como ASISA, Sanitas o ISFAS. Este tipo de asistencia
es obligatoria para los estudiantes procedentes de países sin acuerdos sanitarios con el Reino
Unido. También existen ampliaciones de estos seguros privados que permiten cubrir los gastos
de repatriación del alumno en caso de enfermedad o accidente.
Transporte: Escocia tiene buenas comunicaciones con el resto del Reino Unido y Europa.
Principales aeropuertos: Edimburgo, Glasgow, Glasgow Prestwick y Aberdeen.
Ferrocarriles: La red ferroviaria conecta las principales poblaciones escocesas con el resto del
Reino Unido. La red nacional se vertebra en dos ejes ferroviarios Norte-Sur.
Carreteras: Escocia posee unas buenas autopistas en la zona centro y este del país, mientras
que, en el norte al tener menor densidad de población, solo se mantienen carreteras parecidas
a nuestras nacionales.
Moneda: La moneda de curso legal en Escocia igual que en el resto del Reino Unido es la libra
esterlina. La libra se encuentra dividida en 100 peniques. Existe una particularidad en Escocia
con la emisión de moneda y consiste en la autorización que tienen tres bancos de emitir
billetes de libra escocesa, el Bank of Scotland, el Royal Bank of Scotland y Clydesdale Bank. El
billete varía al de su homologo inglés emitido por el Bank of England pero el valor de ambas es
la misma. Los billetes emitidos tienen los siguientes valores: £1, £5, £10, £20, £50 and £100. La
nota negativa en este apartado consiste en que generalmente las libras escocesas no son
aceptadas fuera del Reino Unido.
Datos sobre Edimburgo
Edimburgo fue designada capital por el rey Robert the Bruce en 1437 y aunque la capital de
Escocia se trasladaba de una ciudad a otra, se establece definitivamente desde el 1633 en la
ciudad de Edimburgo.

Economía: Servicios financieros y Turismo
Gobierno local: Lord Provost (alcalde) y 58 concejales electos
Centro histórico: Barrios de Old Town, New Town y West End
El centro histórico es declarado patrimonio histórico de la humanidad por la UNESCO en el
1995. Estas zonas tienen diferentes estilos arquitectónicos que varían desde el medieval al
modernista pasando por el georgiano y victoriano.
Transporte público
El transporte público en Edimburgo es realizado por dos compañías de autobuses: Lothian
Buses y First Buses. Esta última compañía opera principalmente con las rutas entre Edimburgo
y los pueblos de las afueras de la ciudad. Lothian Buses en cambio es la mayor compañía de las
dos y opera la práctica totalidad de las rutas en la ciudad. La frecuencia de los autobuses y la
eficacia del servicio es muy buena.
Los billetes diarios para los desplazamientos se compran en el propio autobús abonando el
importe exacto ya que el conductor no devuelve el cambio. Por otro lado, los bonos semanales
y mensuales se adquieren en las oficinas de venta de las propias compañías de autobuses.
Lothian Buses ofrece tres tipos de billetes:
Single: £1.60 por cualquier viaje individual realizado en la ciudad. El billete se le compra al
conductor del autobús al subir y se deposita el dinero exacto en la caja por una ranura.
Day ticket: £4.00 por viajes ilimitados durante el día. Se adquiere en la zona del conductor de
la misma forma que el billete single.
Ridacard: Hay de dos tipos: semanal (£18.00) y 4
semanas (£54.00) ambos con trayectos ilimitados
durante todo periodo. El carnet se adquiere y
posteriormente se recarga en las oficinas de la
compañía. En el momento de acceder al autobús, el
alumno tiene que depositar el carnet sobre un lector
en forma de repisa.

Lothian Buses realiza un servicio adicional en horario nocturno conocido como Night Buses.
Los Night Buses operan entre las 00.15 y las 05.00 horas. El coste es de £3.00 pero si el usuario
tiene un billete Ridacard, entonces es gratuito. La frecuencia de autobuses nocturnos es
inferior que en horario diurno.

Hay un servicio de conexión entre el aeropuerto y Edimburgo realizado por tres líneas de
autobuses: línea 35, Airlink y Skylink 200, además del tranvía. El coste por trayecto es £4.50.
La única línea de tranvía en la ciudad también se encuentra gestionada por Lothian Buses y
conecta el aeropuerto con York Place en el centro de la ciudad. El precio si se utiliza desde el
aeropuerto es de £5.50 por trayecto pero ya en la ciudad se equipara al de los autobuses. Los
Single y Daytickets se pueden adquirir en las máquinas expendedoras de las paradas y
también, se pueden utilizar en el tranvía los Daytickets y los Ridacards.
Taxis: Son los famosos Black Cabs pero en este segmento también se incluyen los coches
denominados mini-cabs. Si se quiere utilizar los mini-cabs, se tiene contactar con antelación a
las cooperativas o agencias centrales pero los Black Cabs se pueden parar mientras transitan
por la calle. Un trayecto en taxi desde el centro al aeropuerto puede costar unas £20.00.
Viajes fuera de Edimburgo
Es muy habitual entre los alumnos de estancias largar, realizar algunos desplazamientos
visitando diferentes partes de Escocia durante los cursos o incluso, desplazarse a Londres
aunque también los hay, que prefieren visitar otros países como Irlanda o los países
escandinavos. Hay muchas opciones disponibles que cubrirán todas las necesidades.
Tren: Hay dos estaciones en la ciudad, una principal denominada Waverley Station y otra más
pequeña, Haymarket Station. La frecuencia de los trenes es muy buena durante el día. La
principal compañía en Escocia es Scotrail y la más económica Trainline.
Autobús: La estación de autobuses se encuentra en Elder Street pero la entrada es desde St
Andrews Square al final de George Street. Se puede visitar cualquier rincón de Escocia con las
compañías que operan desde Edimburgo, siendo las más conocidas la National Express,
Scottish Citylink y Megabus. Por cierto, esta última es la más económica.
Avión: El aeropuerto de Edimburgo conecta esta
población con el resto de las principales ciudades
británicas y europeas. Hacemos especial atención a las
aerolíneas low-cost o de bajo coste que operan desde
Edimburgo entre las que se encuentran las siguientes:
Easyjet, AirBerlin, Vueling, Ryanair, Iberia Express, Jet2
o Norwegian.
Compras
El horario de apertura comercial es libre y puede variar según el comercio pero en general, las
tiendas suelen estar abiertas de 09.30 a 17.30-18.00, de lunes a sábado, mientras que en el
centro, el cierre se alarga hasta la 20.00 horas. Los supermercados en cambio abren de 08.00 a
21.00 y los domingos de 10.00 a 17.00.
Es importante no comprar por impulso ante las grandes variaciones en los precios entre un
establecimiento y otro. Recomendamos comparar los precios antes de adquirirlos.

Como en otras partes, los precios se incrementan en las zonas turísticas sobre todo en los
comercios especialmente orientados hacia los visitantes. Sin embargo, los supermercados
disponen de un buen surtido de artículos tradicionales aunque los artículos más típicos y
especializados como lana escocesa o cachemira, se pueden encontrar más fácilmente en las
tiendas para turistas.
Supermercados
La mayor parte de los supermercados en el Reino Unido pertenecen a grandes cadenas, con
establecimientos en cada ciudad.
Waitrose, Tesco, Somerfield, Morrisons, Asda y Sainsbury son algunas de las principales
cadenas de hipermercados que se encuentran en todas las áreas del Reino Unido, sin embargo,
Escocia dispone además de una cooperativa local denominada Scotmid con un buen número
de establecimientos. Estos hipermercados se ubican generalmente en las zonas periféricas de
la ciudad pero disponen además, de supermercados de tamaño más reducido en casi todos los
barrios de la ciudad.
Lidl, Aldi, Iceland y Farmfoods son de tipo económico, con precios reducidos y situados en
zonas populares. Iceland y Farmfoods además, están especializados en congelados.
Los supermercados ofrecen muchos servicios a sus clientes, uno que llama mucho la atención
es el de cash-back. El cash-back consiste en sacar dinero en efectivo cuando se abona la
compra del supermercado. El dependiente cargará el importe sacado a la tarjeta, funcionando
de esta forma como una especie de cajero automático.
¿Es difícil de encontrar productos españoles? La
respuesta depende del tipo de producto al que nos
refiramos. Existen establecimientos especializados
en productos españoles aunque también las grandes
cadenas de distribución disponen de los más
comunes. Estos productos suelen ser embutidos,
zumos, frutas y verduras, vinos y conservas.
Tiendas de ropa
Edimburgo es una ciudad ideal para las compras con establecimientos especializados al alcance
de todos los bolsillos y de todas las tendencias. Las grandes firmas del diseño se encuentran en
Harvey Nichols, Jenners, Debenhams o House of Fraser. Jenners es un auténtico icono de la
ciudad por la propia antigüedad de la firma. Se encuentra ubicado en Princes Street en un
edificio catalogado por la Historic Environment Scotland.
Si por el contrario, nuestro bolsillo no es tan amplio, se puede visitar a la cadena Primark o por
ejemplo si se busca ropa de diseño de la temporada anterior, TK Maxx puede resultar la tienda
ideal. En el segmento de tiendas deportivas especializadas, Edimburgo cuenta con algunas muy
conocidas como Decathlon, Sports Direct o JD Sports.

Tiendas de segunda mano o charities
Este tipo de tiendas suelen estar a cargo de instituciones benéficas, dirigiéndose las ganancias
obtenidas en las ventas a los objetivos de la propia institución. Los artículos a la venta son muy
variados e incluyen ropa, libros y cd o dvd pero también las hay especializadas en muebles o
antigüedades diversas, siendo un auténtico paraíso para los coleccionistas ya que se pueden
encontrar verdaderas oportunidades.
Las áreas donde se suelen ubicar este tipo de tiendas conocidas como “charities”, suelen ser:
Nicolson Street, Raeburn Place, Comely Bank Road y Morningside Road y las especializadas en
mobiliario del hogar en Dalry Road y Gorgie Road, de fácil acceso desde Haymarket.
Tiendas de barrio o corner shops
Son tiendas pequeñas que generalmente suplen las necesidades básicas de comida, bebida,
periódicos y cigarrillos. Son muy útiles por su proximidad y los horarios ya que cuando el resto
de las tiendas han cerrado, ellas permanecen abiertos hasta las 9-10 pm. El principal
inconveniente que presentan, son los precios al ser bastante más elevados.
Takeaways – fast food
Este tipo de establecimientos son muy típicos en el Reino Unido. Se iniciaron con el fish and
chips pero poco a poco se ha ido extendiendo la oferta y hoy en día, no es difícil encontrar
takeaways de comida china, india o italiana. Sin olvidarnos claro está, de las grandes
multinacionales del sector de la comida rápida.
Bancos
Uno de los problemas más comunes para los
alumnos consiste en la apertura de una cuenta
bancaria. El abrir una cuenta bancaria supone
un verdadero quebradero de cabeza en
muchos casos pero sin embargo, la solución es
bien sencilla ¿cómo? Simplemente solicitando
al colegio de inglés una carta confirmando la
matrícula y el alojamiento. Esta carta se
presentará en el banco cuando se tenga la
reunión para la apertura de la cuenta.
Servicios sanitarios
Los ciudadanos de la UE y EEE tienen derecho a una atención y un tratamiento sanitario
gratuito en el National Health Service (NHS). Para ello, los estudiantes deben de registrarse en
el centro de salud más próximo al alojamiento y seleccionar su médico de cabecera o General
Practicioner (GP), además de este paso, es importante para los estudiantes de la UE
encontrarse en posesión de la Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea (TSE).

Los estudiantes de países de fuera del Espacio Económico Europeo (EEE) tendrán acceso a la
sanidad gratuita si se encuentran matriculados a un curso con una duración de más de seis
meses y con catalogado como de jornada completa o full-time. En caso contrario, deberán de
tener obligatoriamente un seguro privado que le cubra la asistencia sanitaria mientras realiza
un curso en una escuela de inglés en Edimburgo. Un ejemplo de compañía aseguradora
especializada es la conocida Endsleigh Insurance.
Lugares de culto
Edimburgo es una ciudad multicultural dentro de una sociedad multiétnica y por lo tanto,
dispone de una gran variedad de lugares espirituales pertenecientes a distintas confesiones
religiosas.

Telefonía
Poco a poco están desapareciendo las cabinas telefónicas en
Escocia aunque se siguen manteniendo en lugares de interés
turístico. Estos teléfonos públicos aceptan tarjetas de prepago
telefónicas de £5 o £20 y monedas.
Recomendamos estudiar bien las tarjetas prepago ya que los
costes de la llamada así como los establecimientos de las
mismas, varían bastante de una compañía a otra. Estas tarjetas
se adquieren en las tiendas de barrio, en donde hay expuestos
unos carteles con los costes de las conexiones.

Desde junio 2017 y para los teléfonos móviles, han
desaparecido los costos por el roaming en el extranjero.
Este paso beneficia considerablemente a los estudiantes
con estancias cortas. Sin embargo, para estancias largas o
si el objetivo es trabajar en Edimburgo, consideramos
muy necesario tener un número de teléfono británico en
funcionamiento. Hay que pensar que si bien no hay coste
en la recepción, los británicos pagan como llamada
internacional a teléfono móvil.
Existen en el mercado un buen número de compañías pero generalmente, las más grandes son
las que tienen mejor cobertura y precios. Compañías como Virgin, Vodaphone, O2, EE y Three
ofrecen varias modalidades de tarjetas SIM (SIM cards), dependiendo del tipo de contrato si es
mensual (monthly contract) o de prepago (pay-as-you-go). Son muy habituales las ofertas en
este sector que suelen publicarse constantemente en los medios locales, por ejemplo, la
revista gratuita Metro distribuida en los autobuses.
Tallas y medidas
Es bien conocido que el Reino Unido utiliza su propio sistema de medidas, conocido como
Sistema Imperial. Actualmente conviven en la vida cotidiana estas medidas tradicionales junto
con el sistema métrico decimal. La cuestión de mantener ambos sistemas se basa por un
problema generacional, los jóvenes utilizan sin problemas el sistema métrico decimal pero sin
embargo, las personas mayores siguen decantándose por el imperial.
Tallas
Algunos fabricantes y tiendas usan como indicadores de medidas la “S” para "small", "M" para
"medium", "L" para "large" y "XL" para "extra-large". No obstante, también se utilizan otras
unidades que comparamos con las utilizadas en España.

El sistema métrico fue oficialmente adoptado en el Reino Unido en el año 1970 pero como
hemos indicado anteriormente, todavía se sigue utilizando el sistema imperial. Ante esta
situación, lo más recomendable es conocer las equivalencias entre los dos sistemas como se
indica en la siguiente tabla.

Instalaciones deportivas
Edimburgo tiene un buen número de centros deportivos con unas calidades excepcionales. La
ciudad cuenta con una variada gama de instalaciones tanto públicas como privadas que
facilitan la práctica de cualquier deporte. El organismo encargado para gestionar las
instalaciones deportivas municipales se denomina Edinburgh Leisure y dispone de una
completa página web con información detallada sobre todos centros deportivos. Por otro lado,
la ciudad acoge también a destacadas empresas del sector algunas como Virgin Active, David
Lloyd o The Gym. Todas ellas con unas instalaciones y equipamientos de alta calidad.
Bibliotecas
Existen bibliotecas repartidas por los diferentes
barrios de la ciudad pero la biblioteca con mejores
recursos se denomina Central Library y se
encuentra localizada en George IV Bridge (muy
cerca de la Royal Mile). Tiene conexión wifi
gratuita y un buen surtido de material para utilizar
como apoyo en el aprendizaje del inglés.

Se necesita para inscribirse en las bibliotecas una prueba de alojamiento que la puede
extender su colegio de inglés mediante una carta o si no está matriculado, con cualquier
documento o factura que acredite la dirección, por ejemplo, un extracto bancario.
Internet
Existen muchas opciones de conexión a internet durante la estancia en Edimburgo. Residentes
y visitantes se pueden conectarse gratuitamente y gracias al council en la zona centro, a la red
wifi denominada EdiFreeWifi. Además de esta red, las escuelas de inglés siempre tienen
conexión wifi gratuita y ordenadores con internet a disposición de sus alumnos. Las residencias
de estudiantes también incluyen la conexión wifi en los alquileres y lo mismo pasa con un buen
número de familias de acogida. Las bibliotecas públicas también ofrecen conexiones wifi y
ordenadores conectados a la red, además de esto, las cafeterías del tipo de Starbucks o Costa
Coffee.
Por otro lado, Edimburgo sigue teniendo Internet Cafés ubicados principalmente en la zona
centro aunque la opción más cómoda, consistiría contratar mobile broadband mediante un
dongle. Los precios no son caros, las prestaciones son buenas y la mayoría de las compañías
telefónicas ofrecen esta posibilidad.
Electricidad
El voltaje en el Reino Unido es de 230 V y la frecuencia de 50 Hz. Los enchufes son del tipo G,
es decir, tienen tres clavijas y se necesitará un adaptador para poder conectar los
electrodomésticos españoles en Edimburgo. Estos adaptadores se pueden adquirir fácilmente
en cualquier tienda de electrodomésticos tanto en España como en el Reino Unido.
Televisión y vídeo
Hay un impuesto anual llamado “TV license” que deben pagar los inquilinos en el caso de
alquilar un piso entero.
Zona horaria
El Reino Unido tiene el mismo huso horario que Canarias y por lo tanto, una hora menos que
en la península y Baleares.
IVA
El IVA se denomina en el Reino Unido, VAT (Value Added Tax) e incrementa los precios de los
bienes de consumo un 20%.
Tarjetas de crédito
Se aceptan por norma general las principales tarjetas de crédito entre las que se incluyen VISA,
Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club y JCB.

Tabaco
Fumar no está permitido en transportes y edificios públicos. Hay muy pocos sitios en los cuales
es posible fumar en el interior, por lo tanto, lo mejor es preguntar si se puede fumar antes de
encender el cigarrillo ya que la multa asciende a £50.00.
Inscribirse en el registro de matrícula consular
El ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores aconseja a todos los
estudiantes que realicen cursos de inglés en Edimburgo o a
todas las personas que se desplacen a la ciudad durante
una temporada que se inscriban como "no residentes” en
los registros consulares.
Esta alta consular como no residente no altera la situación
de la persona en el padrón municipal o consulado de
España de residencia anterior.
La inscripción en el registro de matrícula consular no es
obligatorio pero si recomendable ya que ante cualquier
emergencia, el consulado podrá localizarlo con mayor
facilidad.

Trabajar en Edimburgo
Algunos estudiantes se plantean la posibilidad compaginar el trabajo con el curso de inglés.
Esta posibilidad es una buena forma de cubrir los gastos durante la estancia y al mismo tiempo
una oportunidad para conocer a los naturales del país.
Los estudiantes de la Unión Europea no tienen restricciones para trabajar en Edimburgo,
mientras que los estudiantes de países de fuera de la Unión Europea pueden trabajar hasta un
máximo de 10 horas semanales durante el periodo lectivo si tienen un visado de estudiante.
Los estudiantes con una extensión de visado de visitante no tienen permitido trabajar.
El primer paso es obtener el número de la Seguridad Social o National Insurance Number (NIN
o NI number). Los estudiantes para ello deben de llamar al teléfono 0345 600 0643 y solicitar
una cita para una entrevista. El horario es de 8.00 am a 6.00 pm de lunes a viernes. Es un
sistema de contestación automática, si tiene problema en la llamada, seguro que en la oficina
de colegio donde esté estudiando, le pueden ayudar.

La entrevista posterior será generalmente personal con la excepción que se necesite un
intérprete. Le preguntarán por sus datos personales, las circunstancias en las que se encuentra
en Edimburgo y sobre la necesidad de obtener el NIN. Deberá de llevar algo que pruebe su
identidad como el pasaporte o el DNI.
Los pasos a seguir para encontrar un trabajo se detallan más abajo pero antes de iniciar el
proceso de inserción laboral, debería plantearse las siguientes preguntas…
¿A qué trabajo podría aplicar? Si tiene un nivel de inglés bajo, tendrá que buscar trabajos muy
básicos que no requieran cualificación ni tampoco la atención al público. Algunos trabajos
podrían ser del tipo de limpiador, friegaplatos, ayudante de cocina, camarera de pisos, … Si su
inglés es más alto y fluido, puede aplicar a otros trabajos como camarero, dependiente,
recepcionista, portero o similares
¿Cómo y dónde puede preparar el CV? En Skills Development Scotland, ellos le ayudarán a
preparar su CV de acuerdo a las características británicas y le ayudarán en su ruta de inserción

Búsqueda de empleo
¿Cómo iniciar el proceso de inserción laboral? El proceso hasta conseguir el objetivo de
trabajar en Edimburgo llevará cierto tiempo y durante el mismo, tendrá que realizar una serie
de iniciativas para conseguir su objetivo final. Enumeramos a continuación una serie de puntos
con algunas acciones posibles que podría realizar una vez se encuentre en Edimburgo.
1.- Visite alguno de los Job Centres (oficinas de empleo)
de la ciudad. En las oficinas puede utilizar los "job
points" que son ordenadores donde puede elegir el
trabajo al cual desea aplicar. La información de los
trabajos indica el tipo, la localización, el horario, la
duración, las condiciones y una breve descripción del
mismo. Puede imprimir los anuncios en las propias
oficinas y si necesita realizar una cita para la entrevista laboral, también puede utilizar los
teléfonos que tiene destinados el Job Centre a los demandantes de empleo. La llamada es
gratuita.

2.- Entre en la página web de Job Centre Plus en donde puede también localizar anuncios
sobre demandas de empleo en Edimburgo.
3.- Una vez a la semana, los periódicos locales como el Evening News o el Scotsman tienen
suplementos dedicados al mundo laboral con ofertas de empleo.
4.- Consultar también páginas web del tipo Gumtree o Scot Careers ya que suelen tener
ofertas de trabajo.
5.- Las agencias de trabajo temporal, interesantes para conseguir trabajos de media jornada y
compatibles en muchas ocasiones con los cursos de inglés.

La entrevista
Muchas compañías usan hojas de solicitud en donde se pregunta a los candidatos sobre sus
datos personales y su experiencia profesional. Posteriormente, los managers estudian las
solicitudes eligiendo a los posibles candidatos para la siguiente fase de la selección. Esta
consiste en una entrevista personal con el responsable del departamento en cuestión.
Una buena preparación de la entrevista es una pieza clave para conseguir unos buenos
resultados. El candidato debe de anticipar posibles preguntas y contestaciones, obtener
información de la empresa a la cual se aplica, etc…
En la entrevista, causar buena impresión es vital. Ir bien vestido y ser educado, ninguna
compañía quiere contratar a una persona que no sabe comportarse con los clientes.
Una vez que se ha superado la entrevista y si tiene el trabajo, necesitará rellenar el documento
P46 si no ha trabajado anteriormente en el Reino Unido. Si por el contrario, ya ha trabajado,
necesitará entregar el P45 que su anterior empresa le habrá dado, a la nueva.

Impuestos
¿Tiene que pagar impuestos mientras trabaja en Edimburgo? Sí, efectivamente, tanto en el
Reino Unido como en España, se soportan un buen número de impuestos pero en este
momento, nos centraremos solo en los impuestos soportados en el trabajo. El impuesto sobre
la renta (income tax) se calcula tomando como base el salario percibido durante el año fiscal
entre el 6 de abril y el 5 de abril del año siguiente.
Hay dos puntos importantes en este impuesto:
1.- Unos ingresos inferiores puede eximir del pago del impuesto. Si al final del año fiscal sus
ingresos son inferiores a £11,500.00 puede solicitar el reembolso de las cantidades abonadas
(retenidas en su nómina) durante ese año fiscal. Los totales anuales aparecerán en el
documento P60 que le entregarán en el trabajo (ver ejemplos de documentos adjuntos).
2.- Si sus ingresos son superiores a las £11,500.00 pero inferiores a £45,000.00 se gravan con el
20% y a partir de las £45,001.00, el gravamen es del 40%.
Regresando a España
Cuando se plantee regresar a España, debe de tener presente lo siguiente:
1.- Solicitar la devolución de cualquier posible impuesto abonado.
2.- Obtener los datos y los certificados de cualquier pago realizados a cuenta de pensiones,
beneficios de incapacidad o desempleo.
Antes de iniciar el proceso recomendamos ponerse en contacto con el Inland Revenue para
comprobar los pasos a seguir en todos los trámites.
Devoluciones de impuestos (tax rebates)
Debe de presentar los siguientes documentos al Inland Revenue si sus ingresos no han
superado los £11,500.00 en el año fiscal 2017-18:
- P85 form: “Leaving the UK – getting your tax right”
- P45 form (part 1, 3 and 4) de su último empleador.
Si no rellenó el formulario P86 en el inicio de su estancia en el Reino Unido, es muy posible que
lo tenga que rellenar cuando abandona el país. Además, deberá de entregar también el
formulario P91.
Ejemplos de los formularios P45, P46, P60, P85 y P91 CA3916 se encuentran en el apéndice.
Certificado E-301
Si desea un certificado reconociendo sus contribuciones a la Seguridad Social (National
Insurance) e impuestos en el Reino Unido, deberá de rellenar el formulario CA3916 (ver
ejemplo adjunto) al contar las aportaciones en el Reino Unido para sus prestaciones en España
como por ejemplo pensiones, desempleo, prestaciones por incapacidad, etc….
