Símbolos NacionalesBandera

El triángulo equilátero es una alusióna las ansias de libertad, igualdad y fra-ternidad, y su color rojo presagia lasangre que sería necesario verterpara conquistar la independencia. Laestrella solitaria situada en medio deltriángulo es símbolo de absolutalibertad. Las tres listas azules repre-sentan los departamentos (Occi-dente, Centro y Oriente) en que seencontraba dividida la Isla y las dosfranjas blancas significan la pureza yla virtud del pueblo cubano.

EscudoTiene la configu-ración de unaadarga ojival. Ensu campo supe-rior, una llavedorada simbolizala posición clave de la Isla, a la entradadel Golfo de México y entre las dosAméricas, mientras el sol nacienterepresenta el surgimiento de unanueva nación. Tres listas azules en elcuartel inferior izquierdo aluden a losdepartamentos en que se dividía elpaís en la época colonial. En el cuartelinferior derecho la palma real (símbolode la hidalguía y serena firmeza delcubano), las montañas y el cielo azulrepresentan el típico paisaje de la Isla. Un haz de once varas que simbolizala unidad de los cubanos en su luchapor la libertad sirve de soporte alescudo, coronado por un gorro frigiode color rojo en el cual aparece unaestrella blanca. Orlan el escudo, a la

derecha, una rama de encina y a laizquierda una de laurel, que represen-tan la fortaleza y la victoria.

Himno NacionalSu música y letra fueron compuestaspor el patriota bayamés Pedro(Perucho) Figueredo al inicio de lasgestas independentistas. Como can-ción patriótica y grito de guerra fueentonado, por primera vez, el 20 deoctubre de 1868 por la población de lavilla de San Salvador de Bayamo,región oriental del país.

National SymbolsThe FlagThe equilateral triangle is a clear reference to the yearning for liberty,equality and fraternity. The color red portends the spilling of blood thatwould be required to win independence. The single star located in the middleof the triangle is a symbol of absolute freedom. The three blue stripes represent theeastern, central and western provinces into which the island wasformerly divided. The two white stripssignify the purity and virtue of theCuban people.

ShieldThis is gothic shaped. On the upperparts there is a golden key that symbolizes the key position of theisland, at the entrance to the Gulf ofMexico and between the twoAmericas while the rising sun represents a new nation. Three bluestrips in the bottom left section are areference to the regions into whichthe country was divided during thecolonial period. In the bottom rightsection, the royal palm (symbol of

the nobility and the steadfastness ofCubans), the mountains and the clearblue sky represent a typical Cubanlandscape. A bundle of eleven staff that symbolizes the unity of the Cuban people in the struggle for freedom supports the shield, crowned by aPhrygian cap on which there is a whitestar. Bordering the shield, to the right,there is an oak branch, and to the left,a laurel branch, representing strengthand victory.

National AnthemThe music and lyrics were composedby Pedro (Perucho) Figueredo, fromBayamo, at the start of the independence struggles. As a patrioticsong, it was sung for the first time on October 20, 1868, by the inhabitants of Bayamo.

Archipiélago dde LLos CCanarreosAl sur de la isla de Cuba se encuentra el archipiélago de Los Canarreos, conformado pormás de 300 islas y cayos. La mayorde ellas, Isla de la Juventud, tiene 2 200 km cuadrados, seguida porCayo Largo, que se encuentra en elextremo oriental y es el principalatractivo turístico de la región.

Cayo Largo fue un sitio escogidopor piratas y corsarios para

realizar breves estancias y guardarlos tesoros conquistados o saqueados en sus andanzas pormares y ciudades. Uno de esos piratas incrustó enlas costas de Cayo Largo unacruz como símbolo de conquistae imposición de sus costumbresy hábitos. Años después, los esclavos prófugos del colonialismo español escogíanlos lugares más inhóspitos pararefugiarse del castigo. De las plantaciones de caña enla provincia de Matanzas ungrupo de ellos se fugaron a laCiénaga de Zapata.Posteriormente navegaron encanoas hacia el sur y encontraronesta porción de tierra. Recorriendo el Cayo, en la actualplaya Blanca encontraron una cruza la cual le hicieron un ritual, bendiciéndola con los ritos a susdioses, frutos del sincretismo religioso. Le asignaron a la cruz lamisión de proteger esta tierra. Esta historia llegó más allá de lasfronteras del Cayo y en 1961, conel inicio de la construcción delhotel Isla del Sur, fue trasladada allugar donde hoy permanece.Desde allí resguarda esta tierrabendecida por la naturaleza.Cuentan los fundadores del destino que la misma no sedebe tocar y mucho menosintentarla derribar. De sus leyendas se habla mucho, peronadie se atreve a cuestionar queha cumplido la misión que le dieron los orishas.

Key Largo was the place chosen by pirates and corsairs

for brief stays and to hide the treasures conquered or ransackedduring their adventures acrossseas and cities. One of those pirates set a crosson the coast of Key Largo as asymbol of conquest and imposition of their customs andhabits. Years later, slaves runningaway from Spanish colonialismchose the most inhospitable places to escape from punishment. A group of slaves ran way from the sugarcane plantations in MatanzasProvince to Ciénaga de Zapata.Later on, they sailed south oncanoes and found this part ofland. Walking around the key,where Playa Blanca is today, theyfound a cross to which they offered a religious ceremony, blessing it with the rites of theirgods, resulting from religious syncretism. They assigned the mission to protect this land to thecross. This legend went furtherbeyond the key borders and in1961, at the start- up of the construction of Isla del Sur Hotel,the cross was transferred to theplace where it is today. Fromthere, it safeguards this land blessed by nature. The founders of this tourist placesay that this cross must not betouched and even less, takendown. There is much talkingabout its legends, but nobodydares to question that it hasaccomplished the mission givenby the orishas.

Losaborígenes cubanos la llamabanSiguanea o Camaraco y dejaronpictografías visibles hoy en variascuevas. El Almirante CristóbalColón la nombró San Juan Evan-gelista. Casi abandonada, durantevarios siglos corsarios y piratas lautilizaron como refugio y base deoperaciones. Bajo dominio espa-ñol se le llamó Isla de los Depor-tados, pues servía de prisión acondenados por motivos políti-cos, y posteriormente Isla dePinos, nombre con el cual llegó alaño 1978, cuando se resolviódenominarla Isla de la Juventud.El territorio, que en conjunto conotros 672 cayos e islotes conformael Archipiélago de los Canarreos,posee una accidentada costa yespesos bosques tropicalesdonde convive una gran variedad

de especies de animales. El Áreade Reserva Ecológica de PuntaFrancés, en el litoral sudoeste,permite a los visitantes disfrutarde excelentes playas, variadasofertas náuticas y excursiones.

Located a little over 100 kilometers from Batabanó

(south of Havana province), theIsle of Youth extends along anarea of 2 200 square kilometers,which make it the second largestisland of the Cuban archipelago.Cuban aboriginal communitiescalled it Siguanea or Camaracoand left its pictographies in aseries of caves that can be seen nowadays. Admiral CristopherColumbus named it Saint John theEvangelist. Almost completelyabandoned, it served for severalcenturies as a sanctuary and asoperational base for corsairs andpirsates. Under Spanish colonialism it was called Isle of theDeportee, for it served as a prisonfor those convicted for political rea-

sons, and later Isle ofPines until 1978 when itwas oficially named Isleof Youth.The territory with other 672 keys and islets makeup the Canarreos. Itoffers varied nautical activities and trips. Thisis endorsed by thecrystal clearness of itswaters, and permits itsvisitors to enjoy excellent beaches, a andits well-preserved coral reef.
