Common Features

High social, economical and cultural interrelationships between both regions since long time.

Similar language (Portuguese and Galician), weather, culture, landscape and

natural environment, gastronomy and enology. Both are peripheral (Atlantic)

areas in Europe and in their own countries.

Both economies are turning from an Agriculture specialization in the early 80s to a Services focused economy. There is some heavy industry in both regions. “Sea related” economies.

Commercial and labour trade but also for leisure time and tourism. Holding

49% of all the traffic between Spain and Portugal

- Cooperation instrument at Community level to

overcome the obstacles to cross-border

cooperation, allowing the cooperative groups to

implement territorial cooperation projects

financed by the Community or perform activities

of territorial cooperation initiative of the Member

States .

-The objective of the EGTC is to facilitate and

promote cross-border, transnational and

interregional cooperation among its members. The

EGTC is made up of Member States, regional

authorities, local authorities and statutory bodies on

a voluntary basis.
