San Francisco JavierFrancisco Javier nació en España en 1506. Estudió en la universidad de París, donde fue maestro de filosofía. En la universidad conoció a Ignacio de Loyola. Francisco Javier y cinco amigos más, se unieron a Ignacio de Loyola y fueron los primeros miembros de la Compañía de Jesús.

Tras unirse a la nueva comunidad religiosa de Ignacio de Loyola, Francisco Javier viajó a las Indias Orientales (Filipinas, Japón) para servir como misionero. Allí enseñó a los niños mediante relatos y canciones religiosas. Visitó a los enfermos, a los pobres y a los prisioneros. Muchas personas se sentían impresionadas por la manera en que Francisco Javier vivía su vida y escogieron seguir a Jesús por su ejemplo.

Tras servir en las Indias Orientales, Francisco Javier viajó a Japón para enseñar a la gente acerca de Jesús. Su gran deseo era viajar a China para enseñar allí. En 1552, mientras viajaba a China, Francisco Javier enfermó. Murió antes de llegar a China continental. Francisco Javier es el santo patrón de las misiones. Su fiesta se celebra el 3 de diciembre.

Celebrando la PascuaDurante el tiempo de Pascua de Resurrección celebramos la Resurrección de Jesús. Nuestra tristeza por su muerte en la cruz desaparece al recibir al Cristo resucitado en nuestras vidas. Nos alegramos y decimos ¡Aleluya, Jesús ha resucitado de entre los muertos!

El tiempo de Pascua comienza con la celebración de la Vigilia Pascual el Sábado Santo y termina 50 días más tarde, en Pentecostés. Durante este tiempo también celebramos la fiesta de la Ascensión, el día que Jesús ascendió al cielo.

La palabra Pascua tiene sus orígenes en tiempos muy remotos. Muchos creen que proviene de las celebraciones de primavera y que por tanto se relaciona con el comienzo de una vida nueva. En la actualidad, cuando escuchamos esta palabra pensamos en la Resurrección de Jesús. Cada primavera celebramos con alegría el triunfo de Jesús sobre la muerte y el don de la nueva vida que nos trae.

Saint Francis XavierFrancis Xavier was born in Spain in 1506. He studied at the University of Paris, where he became a philosophy teacher. While at the university, he met Ignatius of Loyola. Francis Xavier and five others joined Ignatius of Loyola as the first members of the Society of Jesus.

After joining Ignatius of Loyola’s new religious community, Francis Xavier traveled to the East Indies to serve as a missionary. He taught the local children by telling them religious stories and teaching them religious songs. He visited people who were poor, sick, or in prison. Many people were impressed with how Francis Xavier lived his life. They chose to follow Jesus because of his example.

After serving in the East Indies, Francis Xavier traveled to Japan to teach people about Jesus. His great wish was that he could go to China to teach people there. In 1552, as he was traveling to China, Francis Xavier became ill. He died before he reached the mainland of China. Francis Xavier is the patron saint of foreign missionaries. His feast day is December 3.

Celebrating EasterDuring the Easter season, we celebrate Jesus’ Resurrection. Our sadness over his Death on the cross is taken away as we welcome the risen Christ into our lives. We rejoice and sing Alleluia—Jesus is risen from the dead!

The Easter season begins with the celebration of the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday and ends 50 days later on Pentecost. During this season we also celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, the day Jesus ascended into Heaven.

The word Easter has its roots in ancient times. Most believe it has to do with springtime celebrations and the beginning of new life. Today when we hear the word, we think of Jesus’ Resurrection. Every spring we joyfully celebrate Jesus’ victory over death and the gift of new life it brings to us.

San Ignacio de LoyolaIgnacio de Loyola nació en una familia noble en España en 1491. De joven trabajó como paje, un tipo especial de sirviente del rey. Después se hizo soldado. Tras resultar herido en una batalla, Ignacio regresó a su casa para recuperarse. Para pasar el tiempo leía acerca de Jesús y de los santos.

Durante su recuperación decidió convertirse en discípulo de Jesús. Abandonó su estilo de vida mundano para seguir más de cerca el ejemplo de los santos sobre los que había leído. Celebró el sacramento de la Reconciliación para renovar su relación con Dios. Ignacio viajó al monasterio de Montserrat, cerca de Barcelona, España. Durante su estancia en el monasterio rezó a Dios, preguntándole cómo podía servir mejor a Dios y a la Iglesia. Ignacio de Loyola respondió al llamado de Dios haciéndose sacerdote y fundando una nueva comunidad religiosa de hermanos y sacerdotes, la Compañía de Jesús.

Para cuando murió Ignacio de Loyola, los miembros de la Compañía de Jesús ya habían viajado a varios países de Europa, a la India, Brasil, Japón y China. Su fiesta se celebra el 31 de julio.

Celebrando la Cuaresma y la Semana Santa

La Cuaresma es un tiempo de preparación para celebrar la Resurrección de Jesús en la Pascua. Durante este tiempo respondemos al llamado de Dios a la conversión recordando que debemos arrepentirnos y creer en el Evangelio. Hacer esto nos prepara para celebrar la plenitud del amor de Dios y su gracia durante el tiempo de Pascua.

El tiempo de Cuaresma comienza el Miércoles de Ceniza y termina con la celebración del Triduo Pascual durante la Semana Santa. El Miércoles de Ceniza el sacerdote nos marca con una cruz de ceniza en nuestra frente como recordatorio de nuestra necesidad de perdón.

Durante la Semana Santa celebramos el Domingo de Ramos, Jueves Santo, Viernes Santo y Sábado Santo. Durante esta semana, la más sagrada del año, recordamos la Pasión y la muerte de Jesús. Rezamos por la gracia de vivir en la nueva vida del Bautismo.

SESSION 16

Saint Ignatius of LoyolaIgnatius of Loyola was born to a noble family in Spain in 1491. As a young man, Ignatius of Loyola worked as a page, a special kind of servant for the king. He later became a soldier in the Spanish military. After Ignatius of Loyola was wounded during a battle, he went home to recover. To help pass the time, he read about Jesus and the saints.

During his recovery Ignatius of Loyola decided to become one of Jesus’ disciples. He gave up his worldly lifestyle so that he could better follow the example of the saints he had read about. He celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation so he could renew his relationship with God. He traveled to the monastery of Montserrat near Barcelona, Spain. While he was at the monastery, Ignatius of Loyola prayed to God, asking how he could better serve him and the Church. Ignatius of Loyola responded to God’s call by becoming a priest and by founding a new religious community of priests and brothers, the Society of Jesus.

By the time Ignatius of Loyola died, members of the Society of Jesus had traveled to countries in Europe and to India, Brazil, Japan, and China. His feast day is July 31.

Celebrating Lent and Holy Week

Lent is a time to prepare for the celebration of Jesus’ Resurrection at Easter. During this season we respond to God’s call to conversion by remembering to repent and believe in the Gospel. Doing this prepares us to celebrate the fullness of God’s love and grace during the Easter season.

The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends with the celebration of the Triduum during Holy Week. On Ash Wednesday we receive ashes on our foreheads as a reminder of our need for forgiveness.

During Holy Week we celebrate Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. During this holiest week of the year, we remember Jesus’ Passion and Death. We pray for the grace to live in the new life of Baptism.

Luis apoyó especialmente a las órdenes religiosas de los dominicos y los franciscanos en su esfuerzo por dar a conocer la Buena Nueva.

En 1270, el rey Luis IX enfermó y murió durante una Cruzada en el norte de África. Es el patrón de los padres y de las familias numerosas. Su fiesta se celebra el 25 de agosto.

Saint Louis IXLouis IX, born in 1214, became the king of France at the age of 12. Because of his age, his mother made most of the important decisions for the kingdom for many years. In 1234 Louis married Margaret of Provence. They had 11 children.

As king, Louis had a great love for God and for the French people. He made fair laws and protected the people from unjust treatment by nobles and officials. He improved France’s taxation and legal systems, and he promoted peace among neighboring countries. He also supported the building of hospitals, schools, and religious institutions. Louis especially supported the Dominicans and Franciscans, two religious orders, in their efforts to spread the Good News.

King Louis became ill and died in 1270 while on a Crusade to North Africa. He is the patron saint of parents and large families. His feast day is August 25.

CelebratingChristmasWe celebrate Jesus’ birth on December 25, the Feast of the Nativity. This is such an important event that we celebrate it during the entire Christmas season.

This season, which follows the Advent season, begins with the celebration of Mass on Christmas Eve. It includes the Feasts of the Holy Family and the Epiphany and ends with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. While Christmas is one of the shortest seasons in the liturgical year, it is one of the most joyful.

The word Christmas comes from the Old English Cristes Maesse, which means “the Mass of Christ.” Today we call it Christmas because we celebrate Christ’s birth at Mass.

San Juan Bautista VianneySan Juan Bautista Vianney nació en Francia en 1786. Gran parte de su niñez la pasó ayudando a su padre a cuidar del ganado. A los veinte años comenzó a estudiar para ser sacerdote. Como de niño no había ido mucho a la escuela, tenía dificultad con sus estudios. El latín, idioma que todo sacerdote debía saber, le resultaba muy difícil. Pero Juan era muy devoto e impresionaba a los demás con su bondad. Una de estas personas, el padre Balley, se hizo su amigo y lo ayudó a hacerse sacerdote.

En 1818 Juan se convirtió en el párroco de la iglesia de Ars, un pequeño pueblo de Francia. Juan se hizo famoso por la atención con que escuchaba a las personas. Miles de personas viajaron a Ars para celebrar con el padre Juan el sacramento de la Reconciliación. Aunque en ocasiones se debió de sentir exhausto, Juan nunca dejó de atender a nadie. Murió en 1859 y fue canonizado en 1925. San Juan Bautista Vianney es el patrón de los párrocos. Su fiesta es el 4 de agosto.

Saint John Baptiste VianneyJohn Baptiste Vianney was born in France in 1786. He spent much of his childhood helping care for his father’s livestock. John began studying for the priesthood when he was 20 years old. Because he had received little schooling as a child, he struggled as a student. John had a difficult time with Latin, which every priest needed to know. Yet John was very devout and impressed others with his goodness. One such person, Father Balley, befriended John and helped him become a priest.

In 1818 John became the pastor of a church in Ars, a village in France. John became known for his attentive listening. Thousands of people traveled to Ars to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation with him. Although he must have been exhausted at times, John did not turn anyone away. John died in 1859 and was canonized in 1925. Saint John Baptiste Vianney is the patron of parish priests. His feast day is August 4.

CelebratingAdventThe Church’s liturgical year begins with Advent, a season of hope and waiting. During Advent we get our churches, our homes, and our hearts ready to celebrate Jesus’ birth.

There are four Sundays during the Advent season. We also celebrate two feasts of Mary’s. On December 8 we celebrate the Immaculate Conception. This feast celebrates God’s gift of grace to Mary, freeing her from any stain of Original Sin. On December 12 we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Advent season ends on Christmas Eve.

The name of this season comes from the Latin word adventus, which means “arrival” or “coming.” During the Advent season, we prepare to celebrate Jesus’ birth and await his Second Coming.

Saint Teresa of ÁvilaTeresa of Ávila was born in Spain in 1515. Her strict but loving father sent her to a convent when she was 16 years old. Teresa discovered that she liked living a simple life in community with other religious sisters.

At times Teresa felt herself growing away from God. Sometimes she tried to pray but found it difficult. However, Teresa continued to pray and remained faithful to God because she knew that this was what he wanted her to do.

Teresa wrote about prayer and traveled throughout Spain to teach people about the simple life she lived. What she wrote was so important that she was named a Doctor of the Church, a special kind of teacher. People who want to learn about prayer still read her books today. Her feast day is October 15.

Celebrating Ordinary TimeThe Church celebrates feasts and seasons to remind us of the great things God has done for us. These celebrations help us remember how much God loves us.

Ordinary Time is one Church season. We celebrate it twice each liturgical year—between the Christmas season and Lent and after the Easter season until Advent. All Souls Day and All Saints Day are two feasts celebrated in the fall, near the end of Ordinary Time.

The name of the season, Ordinary Time, does not mean that the season is common. Ordinary comes from the word ordinal, meaning “time that is put in a certain order.” Each week is referred to by which number week it is, such as the Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time.

María respondió al ángel: “¿Cómo sucederá eso?”. Se sentía confundida porque, aunque estaba comprometida con José, aún no se habían casado.

Gabriel le respondió que daría a luz por obra del Espíritu Santo. Su hijo sería el Hijo de Dios. Luego Gabriel le dijo: “Tu pariente Isabel también tendrá un hijo, aún en su vejez, pues nada es imposible para Dios”.

María respondió: “Yo soy la sierva del Señor: que se cumpla en mí tu palabra”.

El primer discípuloCuando Gabriel le dijo a María que sería la madre de Jesús, ella tuvo que tomar una decisión. María pudo haber dicho no al pedido de Dios. Dios, por su parte, ya le había dado otro don a María, la gracia de decir sí a todo lo que Dios le pidiera que hiciera. Cuando María aceptó la voluntad de Dios, su respuesta fue total y rotunda: “Que se haga en mí tu palabra”. Su alegre aceptación del mensaje de Dios convirtió a María en la primera y más importante de todos los discípulos. Al convertirse en la madre de Jesús, María se convirtió en la Madre de Dios.

Al igual que María, estamos llamados al discipulado. Decimos sí a este llamado al seguir a Jesús, al hablar a los demás acerca del Reino de Dios y al cuidar de la creación. También estamos llamados a ejercer la solidaridad con todo el mundo, especialmente con los pobres, los que sufren y los indefensos. Cada miembro de la Iglesia responde al llamado al discipulado y a la solidaridad usando los dones que hemos recibido de Dios.

Conoce a una persona santaEl beato Miguel Pro nació en México en 1891 y comenzó sus estudios en un seminario jesuita a los 20 años. En México, en los años 20 del siglo pasado, los católicos tenían prohibido practicar su religión, por lo que Miguel abandonó el país. En 1925 fue ordenado sacerdote y al año siguiente regresó a México, realizando su ministerio en secreto. Al igual que Miguel, cada vez que nos enfrentamos a una situación difícil le podemos rezar a María para que nos de fuerza para vivir como Dios quiere que vivamos.

The AnnunciationGod sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth to give a message to Mary. Gabriel greeted Mary by saying, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” At first Mary was afraid. She wondered what this greeting might mean, but Gabriel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.” Gabriel then told Mary that she would have a son and name him Jesus. “He will be called Son of the Most High,” said Gabriel, “and his kingdom will have no end.”

Mary asked Gabriel, “How can this be?” She was confused since she and Joseph were engaged but not yet married.

Gabriel told Mary that she would give birth by the power of the Holy Spirit. Her child would be the Son of God. Then Gabriel said, “Your relative, Elizabeth, will also have a child, even though she is old; for nothing is impossible with God.”

The First DiscipleWhen Gabriel told Mary that she would be Jesus’ mother, she had a choice to make. Mary could have said no to God’s request. God, however, already had given her another gift—the grace to say yes to what God asked her to do. When Mary accepted God’s will, her answer was total and complete: “May it be done to me according to your word.” Her joyful acceptance of God’s message made Mary the first and the greatest of the disciples. In becoming Jesus’ mother, Mary became the Mother of God.

Like Mary, we are called to discipleship. We say yes to this call by following Jesus, telling others about the Kingdom of God, and caring for creation. We are also called to solidarity with the whole world, especially people who are poor, suffering, or vulnerable. Each member of the Church responds to the call of discipleship and solidarity by using the gifts we have received from God.

Meet a Holy PersonBlessed Miguel Pro was born in Mexico in 1891 and began studying to be a Jesuit priest when he was 20 years old. In Mexico in the 1920s, Catholics were forbidden to practice their religion, so Miguel left the country. He became a priest in 1925 and returned to Mexico the following year, conducting his ministry in secret. Like Miguel, whenever we face a difficult situation, we can pray to Mary for the strength to live as God wants us to live.

Four Ways to Invite God into Your LifeI was at a retreat once, and a person said to me, “I’ve come

to believe that God is not pushy. He waits for us to invite him.”

We then went to the chapel where the retreat leader read the

parable of the prodigal son. I noticed that in this classic story

about the nature of God, the father didn’t chase down the son

and drag him home. He waited for his son’s return.

As soon as the son made the first move toward home, his father came running with open arms. If you feel like God is not as present in your life as you would like, here are four easy ways to invite him.

1. Begin your day with an invita-tion. If your intentions are clear, life is more likely to provide the results you’re looking for. So make your intentions clear by inviting God into your life. When troubles occur, you’ll find that you’ll be supported by the strength and compassion of God.

2. Call for backup. If you’re preoccu-pied by a challenge that’s coming your way, issue an early invitation to God. Pray “God, please help me as I enter into this challenge.” By asking for

God’s help and imagining that God is present, you’ll be open to the grace available to you.

3. Notice God’s handiwork. Pay atten-tion to nature, which is ample evi-dence of the presence of God. Nature abounds and has important spiritual messages for you. It may be the maj-esty of the mountains or the simplicity of a dandelion sprouting through the crack in a city sidewalk. Open your heart to nature, and you’ll know that God’s life flows through you as well.

4. Still yourself. Balancing the busyness of our days with a short time of silence allows God to speak to our hearts. Take some time, even if briefly, to simply sit in the pres-ence of God. †

RSVPInvitations remind me I’m valued by another. I both receive and extend invitations. It works that way with God, too. Sometimes God invites and waits for my response. Other times God waits for me to extend the invitation.

Find a quiet place to be alone with God. Close your eyes, breathe slowly and deeply, and imagine yourself stand-ing before a door. “Behold, I

stand at the door and knock,” God says. (Revelation 3:20) But

is the door locked? What distrac-tions prevent you from opening the door? Unlock the door and invite God into your heart. Take a final breath, and as you exhale, slowly open your eyes, assured that God has accepted your invitation to come into your heart. ■

Cuatro maneras de invitar a Dios a su vidaCierta vez, estando en un retiro, alguien me dijo: “He llegado a creer

que Dios no es insistente. Él espera a que nosotros lo invitemos”.

Después nos dirigimos a la capilla, donde el director del retiro leyó

la parábola del hijo pródigo. Me di cuenta entonces de que en esta

clásica historia sobre la naturaleza de Dios, el padre no persiguió

al hijo para arrastrarlo a casa. Esperó el regreso de su hijo.

Apenas el hijo dio el primer paso de vuelta a casa, su padre se apresuró a su encuentro con los brazos abiertos. Si usted siente que Dios no está tan pre-sente en su vida como usted lo desea, aquí mostramos cua-tro formas sencillas de invitarlo:

1. Comience el día con una invitación. Si sus intenciones son claras, es más probable que la vida le dé los resultados que busca. Así que establezca clara-mente sus intenciones al invitar a Dios a su vida. Cuando surja un problema, se encontrará respaldado por la fuerza y la compasión de Dios.

2. Pida refuerzos. Si está preocupado por una dificultad que se avecina, envíe una invitación previa a Dios. Rece así:

“Dios mío, por favor ayúdame ante esta dificultad que voy a tener”. Al pedir la

ayuda de Dios e imaginar que Dios está presente, usted estará abierto a la gracia que tiene a su disposición.

3. Observe la obra de Dios. Preste aten-ción a la naturaleza, que es una muestra de la presencia de Dios. La naturaleza es pró-diga y tiene importantes mensajes espiri-tuales que darnos. Puede ser la majestuo-sidad de las montañas o la simplicidad de un diente de león que brota a través de la grieta en una acera de la ciudad. Abra su corazón a la naturaleza y sabrá que la vida de Dios también fluye a través de usted.

4. Busque la calma. Al equilibrar las ocupaciones diarias con unos momen-tos de silencio, permitimos que Dios le hable a nuestro corazón. Dedique un rato, aunque sea muy breve, al simple acto de ubicarse ante la pre-sencia de Dios. †
