Rioja. Plot A blend of plots 4, 5, 11, 13 and 15 from the Finca La Emperatriz estate. Soil Impressive terroir with a layer of large white pebbles to a depth of about 40cm, covering a loose, sandy sub-soil. This is an ideal soil to grow vines as it has excellent drainage, plenty of light and the roots are well placed to receive all the nutrients they require. The wines produced from this type of soil are fine and elegant. Vineyard 60-year-old bush vines. Yields of 5,000 kg/ha (33 hl/ha). Harvest: Hand-picked in the first week of October. Varietals: Tempranillo (94%), Garnacha (3%), Viura (2%), Graciano (1%). Winemaking: e grapes are selected in the vineyard and then are given a cold soak for 3 days in stainless steel, followed by fermentation at a controlled temperature for 6 days with a gentle pumpover to extract colour and tannins and a further two weeks of post-fermentative skin contact. Ageing: Aged in 70% American oak and 30% French oak barrel. A third part of the wine goes through malolactic fermentation in the barrels. Analysis: Alcohol: 14,1% vol. / pH: 3.7 / Total acidity: 5.2 g/l / Volatile acidity: 0.56 g/l. Tasting Notes: Intense aroma of ripe fruits, black cherry, blackcurrant and plum, together with the tertiary aromas of oak ageing: cocoa, sweet spices. e palate is smooth and supple, with mountain herbs and orange peel notes reappearing. Long, elegant finish. A wine which can already be enjoyed, but will no doubt improve over the next few years. Production: 68,000 bottles of 75cl, 880 magnums and 149 double magnums. Fortunately there was plenty of rain in spring to provide sustenance for what turned out to be a long, hot summer. Once again, being located in a cooler part of Rioja was an advantage for La Emperatriz, as areas further down the valley suffered from the heat. Rains appeared finally in the autumn, but fortunately right at the end of the harvest, by which time the grapes were ripe enough to he harvested just before the downpours of mid October. Plots
