Second Sunday of Lent Theme: Fear and trembling

One of the most influential thinkers of the modern period is Soren Kierkegaard (1813-

1855). If one wishes to gain insight into this true Christian, one can do no better than to

read Fear and Trembling (1843). It is a beautiful meditation on the Old Testament story

of Abraham and Isaac. The story has wide appeal and enduring power. The reader cannot

help but feel drawn into the tension of the drama. It is a story we read which helps us to

read ourselves.

Why is this so? The Lord is asking Abraham to make the ultimate sacrifice and hand over

to God his dearest and only child. After waiting so long and knowing so much heartache,

the Lord’s promise of a child gave Abraham joy without bounds. Now, God wants Isaac

back. The agony and struggle are without limits as well. Kierkegaard himself let go his

fiancée Regina in order to do his life’s work.

Kierkegaard saw in the decision of Abraham, and in his own life, what it really means to

be a “knight of faith.” To be willing to surrender to the seemingly irrational demands of

God (from our human perspective) requires courage and faith. One is willing to make a

“Leap of faith” in response to God’s word. There is no safety-net or religious security

which provides a kind of no-fault insurance against tragedy. We must make a leap of faith

into the unknown with all the “fear and trembling” that such a leap involves. There is

always an inner struggle. For we can always find good reasons to avoid such a leap and

remain secure in our-ordered world. Such radical trust never comes easily.

Reflexión Cuaresma

Tema: Miedo y temblor

Uno de los pensadores más influyentes del período moderno es Soren Kierkegaard (1813-

1855). Si uno desea obtener una idea de este verdadero cristiano, uno no puede hacer na-

da mejor que leer Temor y temblor (1843). Es una bella meditación sobre la historia del

Antiguo Testamento de Abraham e Isaac. La historia tiene un gran atractivo y un poder

duradero. El lector no puede evitar sentirse atraído por la tensión del drama. Es una histo-

ria que leemos que nos ayuda a leernos a nosotros mismos.

¿Por qué esto es tan? El Señor le está pidiendo a Abraham que haga el máximo sacrificio

y entregue a Dios su hijo único y querido. Después de esperar tanto y conocer tanto dolor,

la promesa del Señor de un niño le dio a Abraham alegría sin límites. Ahora, Dios quiere

que vuelva Isaac. La agonía y la lucha tampoco tienen límites. El mismo Kierkegaard

soltó a su prometida Regina para hacer el trabajo de su vida.

Kierkegaard vio en la decisión de Abraham, y en su propia vida, lo que realmente signifi-

ca ser un "caballero de la fe". Para estar dispuesto a rendirse a las demandas aparentemen-

te irracionales de Dios (desde nuestra perspectiva humana) se requiere valentía y fe. Uno

está dispuesto a dar un "Salto de fe" en respuesta a la palabra de Dios. No existe una red

de seguridad o seguridad religiosa que proporcione un tipo de seguro sin culpa contra la

tragedia. Debemos dar un salto de fe en lo desconocido con todo el "miedo y temblor"

que conlleva ese salto. Siempre hay una lucha interna. Porque siempre podemos encontrar

buenas razones para evitar tal salto y permanecer seguros en nuestro mundo ordenado.

Tal confianza radical nunca llega fácilmente.

Adults: Participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA). Infants to age 5: Parents and Godparents participate in Baptism program. Children (Grades 1-12): Participate in Religious Education Program. Please make an appointment to discuss preparation for the sacraments.

La Cuaresma es un excelente momento para que exa-

minemos aquellas cosas que apreciamos y hasta qué

punto estamos dispuestos (o no) a dejarlo ir. De

acuerdo, no se nos puede pedir que sacrifiquemos a

nuestro único hijo. Puede que no nos parezcamos a

Paul, tenemos que quedarnos ciegos antes de poder

ver. Aún menos, podríamos encontrarnos en la pre-

sencia transfigurada de Jesús, Moisés y Elías. Es solo

porque carecemos de momentos y desafíos tan

dramáticos que nuestra necesidad de vivir fielmente

todos los días es tan importante. Es fácil idealizar lo

dramático y representarnos a nosotros mismos res-

pondiendo de maneras heroicas a todo lo que Dios

requiere.

Nuestra vida cotidiana puede parecer tan aburrida y

ordinaria. Demasiado a menudo esperamos por la

existencia. Echamos de menos las mil y una pequeñas

peticiones que Dios hace de nosotros para dar, gene-

rosas y menos aprehensivas. Estamos ciegos a las

muchas transfiguraciones que llenan nuestros días

con la grandeza y belleza de Dios. Debemos exami-

nar nuestras relaciones y ver honestamente si nos

están ayudando a acercarnos más a Jesús o si nos

están alejando.

La historia de Abraham y el reflejo de Kierkegaard

nos desafía a enfrentarnos a nosotros mismos y a los

muchos valores que construimos y los honores que

buscamos. Tememos tanto que al dejar ir todo lo que

apreciamos, perdamos todo y caigamos en la nada.

Tenemos miedo de no ser respetados o tener el poder

suficiente para hacer sentir nuestra presencia. Debe-

mos aferrarnos a todas estas cosas para estar protegi-

dos contra las fuerzas de la desesperación. Sin embar-

go, las palabras de Pablo son especialmente para no-

sotros: si Dios es por nosotros, ¿quién puede estar en

contra de nosotros? ¿Quién nos condenará?

Next Weekend is our Monthly Collection to support Our Lady of Good Counsel.

Lent is an excellent time for us to examine those

things we hold dear and the extent to which we are

willing (or unwilling) to let go. Granted we may not

be asked to sacrifice our only child. We may not

find ourselves like Paul, having to become blind be-

fore we can see. Even less, might we find ourselves

in the transfigured presence of Jesus, Moses and

Elijah. It is just because we lack such dramatic mo-

ments and challenges that our need to live faithfully

daily is so important. It is easy to romanticize the

dramatic and picture ourselves responding in heroic

ways to all that God requires.

Our everyday life can seem so boring and ordinary.

Too often we wait for existence. We miss the thou-

sand and one little requests that God makes of us to

be giving, generous and less grasping. We are blind

to the many transfigurations that fill our days with

the grandeur and beauty of God. We must examine

our relationships and honestly see if they are helping

us grow closer to Jesus or are moving us further

away.

The story of Abraham and the reflection of Kierke-

gaard challenges us to confront ourselves and the

many securities we build and the honors we seek.

We are so afraid that in letting go of all we hold

dear, we will lose everything and fall into nothing-

ness. We are afraid of not being well respected or

having enough power to make our presence felt. We

must hold on to all these things in order to be pro-

tected against the forces of despair. Yet the words of

Paul are especially for us: If God is for us, who can

be against us? Who will condemn us?

:: LENTEN REMINDERS :: Fasting and Abstinence: Fasting is to be observed by Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 on Ash Wednesday and every Friday of Lent. Fasting means we can have only one full, meatless meal. Some food can be taken at the other regular meal times if any time, but no solid food should be consumed between meals.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION (CONFESSIONS): The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated

Sharing Christ is a seven-week mission that focuses on the

continuing growth of our relationship with Jesus Christ.

Following Christ consists of seven sessions and a retreat
