Japanese vs. American Culture• Japanese culture emphasizes “we-ness,” but American culture fo-

cuses on “me-ness.” I am American and my goal is to make myself happy. A Japanese person might be more worried about making her family happy.

• While in America we often refill our own glasses when drinking with friends, in Japan you should never refill your own glass. This is considered very rude!

• In general, American culture does not emphasize a need for rules or laws, but Japanese culture does.

PerspectivesThe Japanese People• I need to show respect to my

elder.• Why is he refilling his own

glass?• Why is he doing “cheers”?

The American• I feel impatient.• She is busy, so I can refill my own

glass.• Why is she holding the sake next to

my cup?

How can we correct the situation?1. Hiroko could explain some cultural differences between Americans and

Japanese people to her family or Mr. Baseball before the dinner.2. She could explain some of the cultural differences as they occur. For ex-

ample…

[Mr. Baseball and Father hold up their cups at the same time for Hiroko to fill]Hiroko: Here, Father. Mr. Baseball, just a minute. In Japan, we usually serve our elders first.Mr. Baseball: It’s okay, I can get it myself. [Mr. Baseball reaches for the other sake bottle]Hiroko: No, please! Let me. We usually don’t fill our own glass in Japan. This way we can show that we care about our friends.
