I també ha estat un lloc per al descans o elretir, triat per actors i directors que han posat nom a un estel a la catifa vermella del cinema.Els elegants palaus renaixentistes del centre de Palma o els carrers del seu barri mariner d'EsJonquet, els dramàtics penya-segats de la Costa Nord, els ametllers de l'interior de la illa, lesmuntanyes de la Serra de Tramuntana, la llum de la tardor reflectida en la mar... nombrososllocs de la geografia mallorquina han estat escenaris d'històries que han commogut el cor delsespectadors.Michael Douglas, Guy Hamilton, Orson Welles, Anthony Quinn, Ava Gardner, Errol Flyn, JohnnyWeissmüller, Peter Ustinov… la llista podria ser interminable. Tots ells van passar, per oci oper negoci, temporades a la illa, i van quedar lligats a ella per sempre.Els més recents, els germans Wachowski, autors de la trilogia “Matrix”, que van rodar en elscims i la costa de la illa la seva pel·lícula “L'Atles dels Núvols”, amb Tom Hanks i Halle Berry.O Hugh Laurie, que va protagonitzar, a una antiga fortalesa de la península de Formentor a labadia de Pollença, la molt premiada “The Night Manager”.

And it has also been a place for rest or retreat, chosen by actors and directorswho have named a star on the red carpet of cinema.The elegant renaissance palaces in the center of Palma or the streets of its fishing district, EsJonquet, the dramatic cliffs of the North Coast, the almonds of the interior of the island, themountains of the Serra de Tramuntana, the autumn light reflected over the sea... numerousplaces of Majorcan geography have been scenarios of stories that have thrilled the hearts of thespectators.Michael Douglas, Guy Hamilton, Orson Welles, Anthony Quinn, Ava Gardner, Errol Flyn, JohnnyWeissmüller, Peter Ustinov... the list could be endless. El capità Mike, un contrabandista alcomandament del vaixell “BlackJack”, salva a un grup de refugiatspolítics supervivents d'un naufragi, ientre ells coneix a la jove Ingrid. Elstrasllada a Palma, i als carrers sotaels molins d'Es Jonquet, un antic barrimariner, es desenvolupa la històriad'un amor impossible, a la qualintervé una joveníssima Lola Flores.Interpretada per Jack Sanders, va serla primera coproducció hispano-nord-americana.

Errol Flynn estimava el mar, i vaabandonar la seva casa de Hollywoodal 1952, per creuar l'oceà a bord delseu iot Zaca. Una tempesta el vaempènyer fins als penya-segats delnord de Mallorca, i va quedar tanfascinat per aquesta costa, que vadecidir fer del port de Palma la sevabase d'operacions.L'actor que va immortalitzar a Robin

Hood vivia a bord, amb la seva dona iels seus dos fills, i era freqüentveure’l passejar descalç pels bars delMoll Vell o del Passeig del Born, dePalma.

La pel·lícula “Badia de Palma”, de1962, no passarà segurament a lahistòria del cinema, però va ser undels grans èxits del seu moment. Elmotiu: Elke Sommer lluïa el primerbikini de la història del cinemaespanyol. La censura del generalFranco, tan estricta en altres terrenys,va veure en els cossos lleugers deroba un bon reclam per al prominentturisme que omplia els hotels de laplatja de Palma.

Capitan Mike, a smuggler incommand of the "Black Jack" ship,saves a group of political refugees,survivors of a shipwreck, and amongthem he meets young Ingrid. Hemoves them to Palma, and in thestreets and under the mills of EsJonquet, the old fishermenneighborhood, develops the story ofan impossible love, with a very youngLola Flores. Performed by JackSanders, it was the first Spanish-American co-production.

Errol Flynn loved the sea, and lefthis house of Hollywood in 1952, tocross the ocean aboard his yachtZaca. A storm pushed him to thecliffs of northern Majorca, and was sofascinated by this coast that hedecided to make the port of Palmahis base of operations.The actor who immortalized Robin

Hood lived on board, with his wifeand two children, and it was commonto see him walk barefoot through thebars of Moll Vell or Paseo del Born,Palma.

The film "Bay of Palma", of 1962,surely will not happen to be one ofthe top films in the history of thecinema, but was one of the greatsuccesses of its moment. The reason:in it Elke Sommer was the first bikiniin the history of Spanish cinema. Thecensorship of General Franco, sostrict in other areas, saw in the lightclothed bodies a good claim for theprominent tourism that filled thehotels at the beach of Palma.

Encara que l'acció transcorre en unailla grega, el rodatge d'aquestapel·lícula, protagonitzada perAnthony Quinn i Michael Caine, enuna –llavors- poc transitada platja deCalvià, va provocar una profundaimpressió en els seus veïns. I des dellavors l'han anomenat oficialment“Platja del Mago”. Woody Allen va dird'aquesta pel·lícula que seria de lespoques coses que no tornaria a veureen la seva vida, si tornés a néixer,però.

Els impressionants jardins de lafinca “Raixa” van ser l'escenariprincipal de “Bearn” (1983), de JaimeChavarri, basada en la novel·la delmallorquí Llorenç Vilallonga. AmbFernando Rei i Ángela Molina en elspapers principals, la pel·lículapresentava el retrat d'unaaristocràcia decadent que es resistiaa perdre els seus privilegis.

El poeta Robert Graves passava jadels seixanta anys, quan va rebre al1955 a la seva casa de Canelluny, aDeià, la primera visita de la bellíssimaAva Gardner. Li va treure el son. Il'autor de “Jo, Claudio” i “La DeessaBlanca” li va dedicar un conte curt “Ala salut de Ava Gardner”, i el poema“No poder dormir”, en el qual relata laimpressió que aquella deessa delcel·luloide va provocar en ell.

Pels carrers de Artà i a la properaplatja de Son Moll, transcorreaquesta tòrrida història d'amor idiners, protagonitzada per GinaLollobrigida i Sean Connery, enaquesta època en el cim de la sevaglòria.

Encara que es va rodar al 1964,dirigida per Bryan Forbes, encaras'expliquen al poble les anècdotes deles setmanes que van tenir entre ellsa aquestes dues icones del cinema.

Although the action takes place ona Greek island, the filming of thisfilm, starring Anthony Quinn andMichael Caine, on a-then-little-traveled Calvià beach, made a deepimpression on its neighbors. Andsince then they have officially calledit "Playa del Mago". Woody Allensaid of this film that it would be oneof the few things he would never seein his life, if he were born again.

The impressive gardens of theestate "Raixa" were the main stageof Jaime Chavarri's "Bearn" (1983),based on the novel by MajorcanLlorenç Villalonga. With FernandoRey and Angela Molina in the leadroles, the film featured a portrait of adecadent aristocracy who resistedlosing their privileges.

The poet Robert Graves was in hissixties, when he received the firstvisit of the beautiful Ava Gardner inhis house in Canelluny, Deià, in 1955.It made him sleepless. And theauthor of "I, Claudius" and "TheWhite Goddess" dedicated a shortstory "To the health of Ava Gardner",and the poem "Not being able tosleep", in which he relates theimpression that that celluloidgoddess caused at him.

Through the streets of Artà and thenearby beach of Son Moll, there isthis torrid love and money story,starring Gina Lollobrigida and SeanConnery, at that moment at the peakof its glory.

Although filmed in 1964, directedby Bryan Forbes, there are stillanecdotes in the town about theweeks that neighbors had betweenthem to these two icons of thecinema.
