It is Christmastime, the timeof giving. The wise men gavegifts to Jesus, the shepherds gavetheir love and praise, theinnkeeper gave his stable, andmost of all God gave His Sonto us. And this story is all aboutjust that giving.

Preparations

Count Helmut vonSteinhausen lived with his wifethe countess, some 200 yearsago, outside the city of Winkitz,Germany. The counts castle

overlooked his fruitful vineyardsbasking on the gentle slopes of Saxony. Under his protectionwere some 20,000 people insurrounding villages.

It was early December, a timewhen the count usually met with

his advisors to plan goals for thecoming year. Many problemsfaced them the biggest one waswhether they would escape

Napoleons armies. Would theirtiny land also be swallowed bythe war spreading through

Europe?

Es poca de Navidad, un tiempopara dar. Los reyes magos le hicieronregalos a Jess, los pastores dieron suamor y alabanzas, el posadero ofrecisu establo y ms que nada Dios nosdio a Su Hijo. Y esta historia trataprecisamente de ese tema: lagenerosidad.

Los preparativos

Hace unos doscientos aos elconde Helmut von Steinhausen vivacon su esposa en las afueras de laciudad de Winkitz, Alemania. Elcastillo del conde tena vista a sus

fructferos viedos que disfrutaban delos rayos del sol en las pocopronunciadas cuestas de Sajonia. Bajosu proteccin haba cerca de 20.000personas en los pueblos aledaos.

Corra principios de diciembre,poca en que el conde normalmente se

reuna con sus consejeros paraplanificar metas para el ao siguiente.Enfrentaban muchos inconvenientes.El mayor de ellos era si escaparan delos ejrcitos de Napolen. Seratambin su pequea tierra absorbidapor la guerra que se propagaba por

Europa?

Another suggested , You mustraise taxes on the villagers .

The count looked out of hiswindow, deep in thought, thensaid , That I will not do. Thevillagers have enough burdens .

But sire, our coffers aredangerously low .

The count answered , The Lord

has blessed me with fertilevineyards that produce good tablewine. I live comfortably off thesale of my wine. God has givenme riches to share not to hoard .

Uno de sus consejeros pregunt connerviosismo: Cmo haremos parapagar a un ejrcito que nos deenda ?

Just then the countess burst intothe room . Enough talk of business! We must begin ourpreparations for the Christmasparty !

Right ! the count saidaffectionately to his wife . This isthe time when love can shine thebrightest. Lets make the most of it.

Then the count turned to hiscounselors and asked , Have thevillage elders given you the guestlist yet ?

One replied , Not yet, but Icould supply you with a list of thewealthiest families in our realm. Itwould be wise policy to invitethem, sire.

My good man, try tounderstand , the count answered.We will do as we have alwaysdone, and invite the orphans, thedisadvantaged, the handicapped,the disabled, and the poor .

The castle became a beehive of activity, preparing for the grandcelebration. The countess was likea conductor, directing the servantsin their preparations. Banners of green were draped, the brassfittings were polished, apple andmince cakes were baked, and thecastle was cleaned from the roof tothe basement.

Buen hombre, trate de entender respondi el conde . Vamos ahacer como siempre hemos hecho.Invitaremos a los hurfanos, a la gentedesfavorecida, a los minusvlidos y alos pobres.

El castillo bulla de actividad enpreparacin para la gran celebracin.La condesa diriga a los sirvientes enlos arreglos y preparativos. Secolocaron banderas verdes, se saclustre a los accesorios de bronce, sehornearon pasteles de manzana y defrutos secos y se limpi el castillo dearriba abajo.

The Christmas Party

It was Christmas Day, and thecourtyard was filled with the soundof excited children. A trumpet

sounded and a herald announced,The people have arrived .

The count stood at the door.Show them in! he called. Themassive oak doors were opened andthe children filed in, bowing to thecount and countess as they entered.

After everyone had arrived, thecount called for the beginning of the festivities, and the band of minstrels came to life with thebouncy tunes of fiddles and horn.There were games of bobbing forapples, blind mans bluff, and

Who am I? All kinds of otherfestive merriment followed.Then it was time to open the

presents. The count climbed on theraised platform and tapped on aglass to get everyones attention.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

May I offer a blessing for you atthis time?The people nodded.

La fiesta navidea

Era el da de Navidad. En el patiose oan los nios entusiasmados.Son una trompeta y un heraldo

anunci: Han llegado losinvitados.El conde estaba de pie en la

puerta. Hganlos pasar! dijo.Se abrieron las inmensas puertas deroble y los nios se pusieron enfila y al entrar hacan una venia al

conde y a la condesa.Luego de que todos llegaran, elconde pidi que comenzaran lasactividades. Los trovadoresempezaron a interpretar alegresmelodas con violines y cornetas.Hubo juegos como el de atrapar conlos dientes manzanas que flotan enagua, la gallina ciega y Adivinaquin soy? Luego siguieron todaclase de festejos.

Despus lleg el momento dehacer entrega de los regalos. Elconde subi a la plataforma e hizosonar un vaso para llamar laatencin de los presentes.

Feliz Navidad para todos!Est bien si hago una oracin porustedes?

Hmm a woodcarving set?he asked. Unable to wait a secondlonger, he tore open the paper. Inthe package was a fine set of tools.

Thank you , sire, Gunter said.Is there a Hans Adam here ?

the count called out as he readanother label on a present. Aseven-year-old boy with blond hairand deep blue eyes came forward.

Im Hans, sire, he said withhis hands open to receive the box.

Its your turn. Can you guessfrom this riddle whats inside yourpresent ?

He read:

Hans was so eager to see whatwas inside that he started tearing atthe wrapping paper without eventrying to guess. He then exclaimed,A paint set! Oh, thank you !

The count noticed that Hansnose was running, and bent downto wipe it with his handkerchief.You poor child. You must dressmore warmly . The count orderedextra clothes and blankets to beprepared and sent back with thechildren when they returned to theorphanage.

As the evening wore on, manyother children were called up, andeach was given a present. Gisele, ablond nine-year-old, came forwardwhen her name was called. Sheread her card slowly:

The gifts continued to be handedout till the time came for the lastone. A small blind boy came to thefront, and his friend read his card:

He guessed it was a musicalinstrument, and by feeling it withhis hands, he discovered that it wasa horn. One of the minstrels kneltdown and showed the boy how tohold his fingers correctly and howto blow into it. The horn made a

shrill shriek, and all the childrenlaughed.Dont worry , the musician

said . My first note on the hornsounded like that too. I will cometo your orphanage and teach you, if you would like to learn .

Yes, I would like that verymuch , the boy said shyly.

Con el paso de la tarde se fuellamando a muchos otros nios y acada uno se le entreg un regalo. Unania rubia de nueve aos llamadaGisela se acerc cuando escuch sunombre. Se le entreg un obsequio yley su tarjeta lentamente:

Que confeccione de tal modo la ropa para que abrigada est la tropa.

Uy! Esto debe ser un costurero respondi la nia correctamente.

Se entregaron los regalos hasta quele lleg el turno al ltimo nio. Seacerc al frente un pequeo nio ciegoy su amigo ley por l la tarjeta:

Si tienes desde un comienzo paciencia,tocars msica con magnificencia.

El nio adivin que se trataba de uninstrumento musical. Al tocarlo consus manos descubri que era uncuerno musical. Uno de los trovadoresse inclin y le mostr al nio cmoponer los dedos y cmo soplarcorrectamente. El cuerno hizo un

sonido chilln y estridente y todos losnios se pusieron a rer. No te preocupes, amiguito le

dijo el msico . Mi primera notacon el cuerno son igual que eso.Si te gustara aprender, puedo ir alorfanato a ensearte.

S, me encantara dijo el niocon timidez.

All to Ruins

And so they enjoyed manyChristmases in this way, until theday that disaster struck. It was the

head gardener who announced thenews, running into the courtyard, outof breath . Master, the invadingarmy is approaching !

The count was startled . What?What army? What are you talkingabout ?

Napoleons army. The Prussianarmy is burning everything in itspath to prevent the enemy fromgetting any food or help! Our vineswill certainly be turned to ashes.What can we do?

At least we must not let the

palace be burned down. Get as manymen as you need and clear an areafar enough away so that the fire willnot be able to reach us. And thenwe shall pray for a miracle. Maybethe fire will not come our way, if thewind is in our favor.

Soon, everybody was workingfuriously, pulling up vines andclearing an area around the buildingwith shovels and pickaxes.

The fire caught quickly on thevines and spread down like a fire-breathing dragon, consuming

everything in its way.

Todo qued en ruinas

Y as disfrutaron muchasnavidades hasta el da en queocurri la catstrofe. El jardinero

jefe dio la noticia; cruz el patiocorriendo y casi sin alientoexclam: Patrn, se acerca elejrcito invasor!

El conde se sobresalt. Qu?Qu ejrcito? De qu hablas?

El ejrcito de Napolen. El

ejrcito prusiano est quemandotodo a su paso para impedir que elenemigo consiga alimentos oayuda! Seguramente convertirn encenizas nuestros viedos. Quhacemos?

Al menos no debemos dejar

que se incendie el palacio.Consigue todos los hombres quepuedas y despejen un rea lobastante grande como para que lasllamas no nos alcancen. Luegooraremos por un milagro. Sitenemos viento a favor, tal vez el

fuego no llegue aqu.Al poco rato todos trabajaban

arduamente arrancando parras ydespejando un rea alrededor delpalacio con palas y picos.

El fuego arras los viedosavanzando como un dragn que

despeda fuego consumiendo todo asu paso.

Living with Loss

The conquering army soon leftin retreat, due to loss of otherbattles. The count and countesstried to make the best of things in

spite of their losses. In the monthsthat followed, they had to sell alltheir family treasures to survive.Gradually, as the money becamescarcer, the castle fell intodisrepair.

One day, after making his

inspection tour, the gardenerreported to the count , Theballroom is not doing well, theroof has holes in it .

How bad ? Well, sire, its great for the

pigeons who have made it theirnesting place. But Im afraid itwill have to be closed. The plasteris cracked and the walls arecrumbling. We could start amushroom farm with all of thefungi thriving in the recesses fromthe leaks and

Well, I appreciate your senseof humor, but seeing as there is nomoney for repairs, I suppose wewill have to board the ballroomup. Which reminds me Ill haveto dismiss all the servants today,Im afraid we cant afford theirservices any longer. Im sorry tosay Ill have to let you go too .

Aprender a vivir con prdidas

Al poco tiempo el ejrcitoconquistador emprendi la retirada porlas derrotas que sufri en otras batallas.A pesar de las prdidas, el conde y la

condesa procuraron sacar partido de lasituacin. En los meses que siguierontuvieron que vender todos los tesoros yreliquias de su familia para sobrevivir.Poco a poco, el dinero se volvi msescaso y el castillo se deterior.

Cierto da, luego de hacer surecorrido de inspeccin, el jardinero leinform al conde: El saln de baileest en malas condiciones, el techotiene huecos.

Qu tan mal est? Bueno, seor, para las palomas

que lo han convertido en su nidal estmuy bien. Pero me temo que tendremosque cerrarlo. El enlucido estresquebrajado y las paredes estn quese vienen abajo. Con la cantidad dehongos que estn apareciendo en loshuecos a causa de las goteras hasta

podramos tener championes y Bien, aprecio su sentido del

humor, pero al ver que no contamoscon dinero para hacer reparaciones,supongo que tendremos que cerrar contablas el saln de baile. Eso merecuerda que hoy tengo que despedir atodos los sirvientes. Me temo queya no podemos darnos el lujo de contarcon sus servicios. Lamento decirtambin que tendr que despedirte.

Bueno, nos las hemos arregladopara ganarnos la vida estos ltimosmeses, pero me temo que nos estamosquedando sin cosas que vender.

Lo que tenemos que hacer esaprender a vivir con menos. Estoyseguro de que a la vuelta de la esquinaalgo bueno hay paranosotros.

A New Kind of Christmas

Christmas was fastapproaching, and the count wasdiscussing with his wife what theycould do for this magical holiday.

One thing is certain , said thecountess, as she dragged her stoolnearer to a little pile of burningsticks that they had gathered in afeeble attempt to stay warm . Wecannot have the children here atChristmas this year .

Why not ? he asked.Because we have nothing to

give them , she said . We havenothing for them to eat, nothing toput on a tree, and no money to buypresents for them .

Una Navidad diferente

Faltaba poco para la Navidad y elconde hablaba con su esposa acerca dequ haran para aquella mgicafestividad.

De algo estoy segura dijo lacondesa, mientras acercaba su banco auna pequea pila de lea que haban

juntado en un dbil intento porcalentarse . Este ao no podemostraer a los nios para Navidad.

Por qu no? pregunt el

conde. Porque no tenemos nada que

darles contest la condesa . Notenemos comida para invitarles, ninada que poner en el rbol ni dineropara comprarles regalos.

Who is coming ? Dont you remember? The

children you invited! And it lookslike the whole village is withthem !

What? I know I invited them,but I did not expect many oreven any to come. There must besome mistake .

Come to the window and look for yourself !

Yes, I see them! And hear themtoo there is a band of musiciansleading them, and they are alldancing to a rousing tune! Get thegardener! Throw open the gate andlets meet our guests !

Soon the courtyard echoed withcheerful greetings of MerryChristmas! Merry Christmas,everyone! while the band still keptplaying loudly.

Come in, my dears ! the countcried out to the children . I am gladto see you. I wasnt expecting somany of you. I am afraid there isnot much room for all of you. Yousee, the ballroom is under repair .

Please let us in, good Count !they insisted.

All right then, but dont expecttoo much .

que invitaste! Y parece que conellos viene todo el pueblo!

escucho, delante de ellos viene ungrupo de msicos y todos vienenbailando al ritmo de una alegretonada! Llama al jardinero! Abranlas puertas de par en par para recibira nuestros invitados!

Enseguida los alegres saludos deFeliz Navidad! Feliz Navidad atodos! hicieron eco en el patiomientras la banda tocaba a todovolumen.

Pasen mis queridos nios! dijo el conde a los pequeos .Me alegro de verlos. No esperabaque vinieran tantos. Me temo que nohay mucho espacio para todosustedes. Es que el saln de bailesest en reparacin.

Por favor, seor conde,djenos pasar! le insistieron.

Est bien, pero no va a sergran cosa.

The ballroom! To theballroom ! the children shouted.

You do not understand. Ihave not been able to repair theballroom for lack of money .

Before he could say more,they pushed open the doors.

underneath it. Everything was inperfect repair; even the floorshone with polish.

Para su sorpresa y mientras ellos lollevaban de la mano, el conde vio queen medio del saln de baile haba unrbol de Navidad inmenso. Se quedboquiabierto al ver que debajo del

rbol haba un montn de regalos. Todohaba quedado perfectamente reparadoy hasta haban sacado brillo al piso.

Some of the boys that you gavetools to decided to return yourfavor, the gardener said, pointingto his apprentices, who woresheepish grins on their faces.

So this is what you have beenup to! How did you manage it ?

We worked on it while youwere away last week, visiting thepoor in the nearby village , thegardener explained.

I am astounded ! the countexclaimed . Thank you ! Then heturned to the others , Where didyou get this tree ?

The forest gave it to us, and wewho love you, give it to you ! theyshouted with glee.

He looked around at all of thebeaming faces. My heart is too fullof joy to speak , he said.

As they led him by the handcloser to the tree, the count wassurprised to discover that all thepackages were for him and hiswife. Each time he opened apresent, all the children clappedand cheered. In the packages wereeach of the family treasures that thecount and countess had had to sellin order to get by.

The couple could not hold back their tears another moment, butthere was more. One boy put aspecially wrapped package in hishand with a note saying , FromAll the Villagers of Winkitz .

We wanted to give you thissand clock for the years you haveloved us and tried to help us,especially on Christmas Day , saidthe messenger boy awkwardly ashe read his carefully preparedspeech.

Everyone cheered and clapped.Read the inscription on the

bottom ! one of the childrenshouted.

The count read out loud: Life is a sand clock of rich and poor; The sand flows not in vain.

It is turned over and filled once more What you give returns again.

It turned out to be one of themost wonderful Christmases theyever had. As usual there wasdancing and an abundance of games, and a fine feast from thefood everyone had brought. Therewere splendid pies, great bowls of jelly, and tremendous fruit cakesfor all to satisfy their appetites.

Speech, speech ! everyonecried out as glasses were raised fora toast.

La pareja ya no poda contener laslgrimas por otro minuto, pero habams. Un nio puso en la mano delconde un paquete envuelto de unmodo muy especial con una nota quedeca: De parte de todos losciudadanos de Winkitz.
