There was time, back in the naïve 1950s, when every man was in love with Marilyn Monroe. They courted her in their imaginations, ran away with her to escape their ordinary lives, and took her as a wife in romantic daydreams. The buxom, curvaceous, sigh-inspiring bleached blonde with the silly laugh and the moves of a pop goddess represented everything their lives lacked: she lived a life outside reality, filled with sublime moments and happy endings, and pos-sessed an unspeakable capacity for love. The star of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Some Like it Hot narrowed the tragic gap between reality and desire and became the gold standard in the war against failure and despair.

with a dangerous, magical beauty like that of Garcia marquez’s shining Remedios, and a Caribbean temperament that subtly combines innocence and eroticism, Colombian sofía vergara is hollywood’s new symbol of latina sensuality. her presence in the entertainment world is a hurricane-like force awakening the imaginations of viewers who see her as a kind of magic antidote to their monotonous lives. In this exclusive interview, Panorama de las Américas captures the thoughts of a legend in the making.

For her proud North American compatri-ots, who made her their queen and peren-nial sweetheart, she symbolized the nation’s ideals, the health and vigor of the unmis-takable Promised Land. The American Way of Life had found its truest expression and justification, without any need for dogmatism.

Marilyn’s popularity proved the country’s thirst for film, theater, and television and her fans’ unwavering loyalty. And so, more than 40 years after her tragic disap-pearance, the entertainment industry continues to create flesh and blood myths to help ordinary people live their lives, keep their fears and boredom at bay, and, above all, ensue box office success and television ratings.

The proof is everywhere: Angelina Jolie, Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson, Jen-nifer Lopez…and Sofía Vergara, the first Colombian to grace the covers of iconic magazines like Vanity Fair. She has been interviewed on programs that rarely feature Latino guests (Oprah Winfrey, David Letterman, Larry King, Jay Leno, and Ellen DeGeneres). She hosted “Sat-urday Night Live,” was rated one of the planet’s sexiest women, and made Forbes Magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential celebrities.

Colombians, thirsting for legends to break up the tedium of their own daily lives, have already declared Sofía —like Mari-lyn Monroe in her time— their mystery date, the star of their dreams, and an illusory touchstone for their happiness. In fact, “La Toty,” as she is known to those closes to her in Colombia, already belongs to the imaginary museum of Creole pride. Her exclusive interview with Panorama de las Américas follows.

tell our readers the exact moment (date, time, place) when you realized you’d been marked, like Remedios, by the dangerous stigmata of beauty.I think I was 17 years old; it was a few days before I graduated from high school. I was just an ordinary girl, but Pepsi offered me a job in a TV commercial after they saw me on the beach one day with some friends. I didn’t want to do it, but the model they’ d hired got sick and they convinced me. And from that point on I began to get offers to do lots of other things. Until the age of 16 I’ d always felt I was too skinny and common looking…

Can you think of any problems, sticky situations, misun-derstandings, or coincidences for which your beauty has been responsible?Well, I remember one problem I had with the nuns at my school: they were furious about that commercial! But actually, beauty only becomes a problem when you think you can use it to get you whatever you want in life. On the other hand, the idea of a brilliant, funny, talented, independent business-woman is not exactly popular…I’ve had to prove over and over that I’m not stupid, silly, easy, or insipid, and that, believe it or not, I really do have talent.

what was your childhood in the tropics like?Very colorful, full of food, siblings, cousins, wonderful music, trips to the country, chickens, family get-togethers, coconuts, parties, carnival time, dances, scandal…Naturally, it wasn’t perfect; there was some drama too, especially with my parents when they divorced. But I can say that happiness was always close at hand.

does secret ambition lurk behind this beautiful exterior? Is your search for prestige and recognition proof of an excessive longing?Ambitions and dreams are at the heart of every human being…they are the driving force in everyone’s life, aren’t they? The interesting thing about ambition is the way it is managed, the way you feed it. Being a young mother, I was very motivated to work hard and not get into trouble so I could make a life for myself and my son, Manolo, and make him proud of me some day.

what’s the most hellish part of being famous? The lack of privacy at difficult moments in your life. When those moments get broadcast and commented on by the public it makes them even more difficult and, yes, they can seem like hell.

now that you speak fluent english, in which language do you dream? In which language do you desire and in which language would you prefer to die?Fluent English, me? [laughs] I do everything in Span-ish! I don’t know how anyone understands me when I give an interview in English, with my savage accent. I answer questions by putting everything through the processor in my brain that is programmed only to work in Spanish.

as a media icon, you are also, to a certain extent, merchandise. what do you think about women being objects of desire? It’s not just women…iPads, songs, pizza, lottery tickets, men…I think it’s great that people have choices and options! As long as you realize that entertainment is a business like any other, there’s no need to overanalyze. I don’t find it offensive; it’s just part of a job that has to do with “objects of desire” and “merchandise.” Just like stocks and bonds whose value goes up and down, clothes that or go in and out of fashion; the same thing happens to artists who sell shows, products, music, magazines…It’s all part of the game, and everyone plays it according to his or her own rules. I love this industry.

Give us a summary of your career and tell us about the four or five most important moments. It all started with the Pepsi commercial when I was 17, and then when I was 21 and divorced, I moved to Miami to work for Univision. A year later I met my friend, manager, and partner Luis Balaguer and we’ve been developing my career ever since, always taking my needs as a single parent into consideration. When I was 30, I moved to Los Angeles to start over again after a battle with cancer. I’ve done TV, produced cal-endars, commercials, a film, and other projects. And I did about seven TV movies and pilots in English. My contract with ABC was what led to the comedy “Modern Family” four years ago, and the Emmy and Golden Globe nomina-tions, which helped hook me up with CoverGirl, Pepsi, and K-Mart. I launched my own clothing and house wares collection, which is something I have always wanted to do.

Belleza, inteligencia, dinero… Yo lo he encontrado… ¡varias veces! [risas].

looks, intelligence, money…which of these do you prefer in a man?[laughs] Intelligence…I think with time and effort a very brilliant man can achieve the other qualities. [laughs] Although the ideal man is one who has the whole package, with a good mixture of all of them, right from the start! does the dream man exist and can he be found in real life?Of course! I found him…many times! [laughs].

how do you protect yourself from the hungry wolves, the clawing publicists, and relentless dirty old men?The same way I’ve always protected myself from dirty old men and everything else in life: by being very straightforward, holding in my laughter, and hanging on tight to my purse: “No, thank you…I only ever do what I want in this life.”
