Getting ready for Cinco de MayoBy Lilia Garcia Jimenez

Cinco de Mayo (May 5) is an important holiday to Mexicans and Mexican-Americans, but not for the reasons many people think.

Many people think that Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day. However, history tells us something different.

Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Battle of Puebla that occurred in 1862, when 4,500 Mexican troops defeated a French army with 6,500 soldiers. After being an independent nation, Mexico was being invaded by the French in 1862, via the state of Veracruz. The French decided to march to Mexico City, but General Ignacio Zaragoza confronted and defeated them in Puebla.

Today, many states in the United States celebrate Cinco de Mayo with music, food and the promotion of Mexican culture.

For me, it is really important to celebrate this day. It is a day of fun, said Hector Mi-

  • On Sunday (April 26), the Mexican restau-rant chain Fronteras held an open house for its new restaurant in Olathe, Kan.

Several civic leaders and general community members enthusiastically celebrated with the De La Torre family as it cel-ebrated a new chapter in the restaurant chains history. The open house also featured music by Beto Lopez and the band Atotonilco and comedy by the clown Gozin.

Salvador De La Torre said the grand open-ing demonstrated why Fronteras is well-known in the Kansas City area: In keeping with the other two Fronteras locations, it

promises customers theyll receive the best attention, food and beverages.

What makes the difference is the attention that we provide to our customers, De La Torre said.

The new location offers a full bar and restaurant. Restaurant dishes, all prepared using special De La Torre family recipes, include pollo del mar (chicken of the seas), the trio fajita plate, Azteca steak en-chiladas, the Veracruz enchilada and barbacoa

(barbecue). Its drink menu includes margaritas, beer and an exclusive selection of tequilas.

Fronteras also has free private rental space available for parties. In addition, wireless technology access is available to customers.

In establishing their third restaurant, Salvador; his wife Bertha; and his children Alia, Elsa, Nicolas and Chavita, are exceeding their original expectations when they started what would be become the Fronteras chain. They look forward to serving the community at their new location.

The new Fronteras is located at 134 Black Bob Road in Olathe. The other locations are at 7779 Quivira Road in Lenexa, Kan.; and 13316 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, Kan.
