Todays passage from Luke is the only story about Jesus in the Gospels that occurs between Jesus infancy and his adult ministry. Luke uses the story to weave these elements together. This story, like all the infancy passages, emphasizes that Jesus was born Son of God. Jesus first spoken words in Luke conclude with I must be in my Fathers house. God is his Father, and Jesus speaks as Gods Son. Luke connects the future ministry of Jesus with the scene at the temple with the teachers. Jesus listeners are astounded at his wisdom. This anticipates similar scenes as an adult. Luke also subtly hints at Jesus resurrection, with details such as the question why were you looking for me? similar to why do you seek the living one among the dead? Luke invites us to see his Gospel as an integrated whole, weaving together Jesus birth, life, death, and resurrection. DID YOU KNOW? Always keep your blind spots in mind Each week, more than 50 children are killed or injured when a driver backs up the car. In an overwhelming number of those cases, a parent, relative, or close friend is behind the wheel. It’s devastating to think that a simple action could cause such harm to your child, but it happens far too frequently. Be aware of your ‘blind spots’ when you’re behind the wheel — those areas you know are there, but can’t see clearly from your mirrors. Check out what’s happening around your vehicle before you get in. Make sure you know where your children are before you start your car. For a copy of the complete VIRTUS® article, “A Pre-ventable Accident,” visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.

DID YOU KNOW? Tax-Wise Year End Giving Options

Gifts from an IRA If you are 70 ½ or older, you can make a tax-free gift directly from your IRA account to the parish. This law allows you to transfer any amount up to $100,000 annually directly to a qualified chari-table organization without paying income tax on the distribu-tion. The transfer does not generate taxable income or a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemized your tax deductions. Your gift can satisfy all or part of your required mini-mum distribution. Gifts of Stock Gifts of appreciated assets such as stock are an excellent way for you to make a charitable gift. Stocks may be transferred directly to the Archdiocese for the benefit of parish, school or favorite Catholic ministry. These gifts will not affect your cash flow, and they provide the following tax benefits: • A possible charitable deduction to help you save on taxes • Bypass of federal and state capital gains taxes • Avoidance of the tax on net investment income From a tax perspective, a gift of appreciated assets makes good sense. You can make the capital gains taxes optional, achieve significant tax savings and support our programs. Please contact Brooke Glazer at 213-637-7381 or [email protected].
