Entre los hombres que acompañaron al fundador de la ciudad vino elsegoviano Tristán de Tejeda quien junto a su esposa se establecieron en laaldea, tuvieron siete hijos, dos de los cuales fueron fundadores de los primerosmonasterios de clausura de estas tierras.

La primogénita,LeonordeTejedadevota de Santa Catalina de Siena, se casóa los 24 años con un caballero de méritos en la conquista, Don Manuel deFonseca, tuvieron un solo hijo que Dios se llevó pronto. Sin descendencia, losesposos destinaron tiempo y dinero para construir un monasterio para quelas jóvenes cordobesas se instruyeran en la vida virtuosa.La vivienda familiar ubicada entre las actuales calles Rivera Indarte, Colón y 9de julio, terminó de transformarse en Monasterio cuando murió Don Manuelde Fonseca porque la viuda se ocupó personalmente de informar al Obispo deTucumán Fray Fernando de Trejo y Sanabria su determinación de fundar elMonasterio Santa Catalina de Siena e ingresar como monja. Por su parte, elobispo adoptó el criterio seguido en la fundación de otros monasterios enAmerica, que por su carácter de fundadora, doña Leonor ocuparía el cargo deprimera Priora. Luego de superar algunos impedimentos como la falta dereglas de Santa Catalina de Siena y la falta de monjas profesas que preparasena las novicias, se fijó el día 2 de julio de 1613 para la vestición de los hábitosde las primeras postulantes.Hoyel actualMonasterio, apuntode cumplir 400años, está emplazadoen Ob. Trejo 44, alberga a 11 monjas de clausura que si bien viven de acuerdoa los preceptos marcados por su fundadora, han incorporado la devoción delSanto Niño Milagroso, el camino a la beatificación de Sor Leonor de SantaMaría Ocampo, monja dominica del siglo XIX y tareas seculares como laencuadernación de libros y restauración de santos, sumado a la permanenteoración por Córdoba y su gente.

Among the men that accompanied the founder of the city was Tristan deTejeda from Segovia who together with his wife settled in the small village and had

seven children, two of themwere founders of the first cloistered convent of these lands.

The eldest daughter, Leonor de Tejeda devotee of Santa Catalina de Siena, married arenowned gentleman in conquests at the age of 24, Don Manuel de Fonseca, they only

had one child who passed away. Without any offspring, the spouses devoted time andmoney to build a monastery for the local girls to be instructed in the virtuous life.

The family house, located in the current Rivera Indarte street, Colon Avenue and 9 de Juliostreet, finally, became a Monastery after Don Manuel de Fonseca’s death because the widow

informed the Bishop of Tucuman Brother Fernando de Trejo y Sanabria her decision to foundSanta Catalina de Senna Monastery and enter as a nun. On the other hand, the bishop adopted

the criterion used in the foundation of other monasteries in America, so that Doña Leonor wouldtake charge as first Prioress due to her condition of founder. After overcoming some obstacles like thelack of rules of Santa Catalina de Siena and the lack of faithful nuns that would prepare the novices,the 2nd of July of 1613was established as a date for the dressing of the habits of the first postulants.

At present the currentMonastery, almost to celebrate its 400 years of existence, is located in Ob. Trejo44 street and lodges 11 cloistered nuns who live according to the precepts established by its founder.They have incorporated the devotion of the Santo NiñoMilagroso, the way towards the beatificationof Sister Leonor de SantaMaria Ocampo, a Dominican nun of the XIX century, as well as secular taskslike bookbinding and restoration of saints, together with the permanent prayer for Cordoba and itspeople.

Al recorrer los claustros del edificio del Rectorado antiguo dela Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, unamagnífica puerta talladadel SXVII se abre para mostrarnos la Sala de Grados de launiversidadmás antigua del país.

Enel sigloXIX, laUniversidadNacionaldeCórdobatomó laantiguaCapilladeEspañoles comosuSaladegrados.Conesefin la reformó,reconstruyósubóvedayconvocódiversosartistasparaembellecerla.Las pinturas de la bóveda fueron variando a lo largode los siglos, yen ellas intervinieron artistas comoCarlos Camilloni oArmandodeSica.

Hoy, el Salón de Grados de la Universidad nos narra la historia denuestra Universidad a través de sus intervenciones. No nos cuestaimaginar las primeras presentaciones de conclusiones que, aunquese llevaban a cabo en la Iglesia de la Compañía, fueron trasladadasluego a esta capilla. Y hasta nos vemos tentados a salir comoentonces, en procesión por las calles, festejando que en Córdobahay un nuevo doctor.

A su vez, podemos vivenciar el elitismo del SXIX, rodeados de sedaadamascada,moldurasdoradasyarañasdecaireles, y retrotraernosa la Argentina europeizante del siglo antepasado. Y como unabocanada fresca, sentir la revuelta del 15 de junio de 1918, laReforma Universitaria, durante la cual, la Sala lamentablementeperdió parte de sumobiliario y la pintura original del Obispo Trejoque representaba el poder clerical.

En la actualidad, la alegoría deArmandode Sica nos invita a seguira esas tres musas, la Ciencia, el Arte y la Poesía que sostienen elescudo de la Universidad e identificarnos con esos niños desnudos,los estudiantes, que se acercan a la casa para vestirse deconocimiento.

Actualmente, laUniversidadutiliza el SalóndeGrados en contadasocasiones, como los Doctorados Honoris Causae, pero podemosvisitarlo, y como viajeros del tiempo, revivir nuestra historia.

By walking along the cloisters of the old building of the Rector’s office of theUniversity of Cordoba, a wonderful carved door from the XVII century opens to show usthe Graduation Hall of the oldest university of the country.

In the XIX century, the National University of Cordoba took the old Capilla deEspañoles Chapel as its Graduation Hall. With that aim it was remodelled, its vaultwas reconstructed and several artists were hired to decorate it. The paintings inthe vault were varying along the centuries and artists like Carlos Camilloni orArmando de Sica made their contribution.

At present, the Graduation Hall of the University tells us the story of ourUniversity through their interventions. It is not difficult to imagine the firstpresentation of conclusions that, even though they were carried out at theIglesia de la Compañia Church, were moved afterwards to this chapel. Andwe are even tempted to go out like in those times, in a procession along thestreets, celebrating that in Cordoba there is another student who graduated as amedical doctor.

At the same time, we can experience the elitism of the XIX century surrounded by damask silk, goldenmouldings and sun-catcher chandeliers and go back to the pro-European Argentina of the centurybefore last. And as a fresh rush of air, to feel the revolt of June 15th 1918, the University Reform,during which the Hall unfortunately lost part of its furniture and the original painting of Bishop Trejothat represented the clerical power.

Currently, the allegory of Armando de Sica invites us to follow those three muses Science, Art, andPoetry that hold the coat of arms of the Universidad and identify ourselves with those naked children,the students, who come to this house to dress up in knowlegde.

At present, the University uses the Graduation Hall in some occasions, like the Honoris Causae PhD,but we can visit it, and as travellers of time, revive our history.

The University of Cordoba, created in the year 1613 andpride of the Argentine Republic, enlarged its original premises in the

middle of the XIX century when the country acquired the piece of landbetween Sarmiento Park and Velez Sarsfield Ave.

More than 100 ha. form this real Campus, which at present is not only aneducational center of excellence but also a real touristic circuit, ideal for

walks in autumn.

Entering through Valparaiso Avenue, on one side is the School of theScience of Information and the School of Economics, on the oppositeside there is a wide space for sports and themedical coverage office thatbelongs to the university.Along Haya de la Torre street we reach the frontof Argentina pavilion, where the rector’s office runs, the Sala de lasAmericas and the Salon de actos where the handing out of diplomas,shows and expositions take place. Behind, youwill find the canteenwhich,at reasonable prices, offers healthy meals fromMarch to December.

Now, along themain street called Enrique Barros we enter into the heart of the Campuswhere we find the School of Psychology, the Mejico pavilion with its School of Arts and theResidencial or Casa de Brujas, distinguished building of neoclassic style built specially to lodgePresident Peron in his visits to Cordoba.

Between the previous one and the Cepia (Center of production and investigation in arts)there is an ample space: the Plaza de laMemoria, la Justicia y la Verdad Square, whose origincomes from a contest of ideas; the winnersMatias Sismondi and Cecilia Nazareno, studentsof architecture and painting, wanted to offer recognition to all those people who sufferedpersecutions, torture, exile and disappearance by the fact of thinking and fighting for abetter society. The work is based on a native carob tree and a group of empty benches; inthis symbolism the idea of public lessons appears, when classes become public and go to thestreets the collective spirit of the social struggle that the dictatorship could not silence revives.

Hay un lugar de barrio Güemes que aun atesoraen sus rincones costumbres, usos y hasta anécdotas deCórdobadel sigloXIXyXX;eselCentroCulturalCasadePepino, otrora vivienda y negocio construido en formadebarcoen1914por JoséTucci, un inmigrante italiano.Don Tucci o “Pepino” y su esposa criaron allí cuatrohijos varones y una sola niña, quien se casó con BrunoPuccini y dejó como descendientes a José y Mercedes.Hablando con Mercedes Puccini sobre anécdotas enla Casa, recordaba: “… Cuando tenía 5, 6 años máso menos me acuerdo que escuché gritos afuera dela casa, A mí no me dejaban pasar para ese lado (la saladondeestáel ingresoal sótano), pero igual fui ymeasomé, puseun cajón para llegar a la ventana y la vi, la vi! a la “Papa de Hortensia”. Ahíestaba la vieja… me acuerdo…, gritaba…, insultaba luego vino la policía parallevársela… y la muy sucia se levantó la pollera y les dijo: “¡…comeloal agente!“¡comelo!,” De pronto sentí un tirón… era mi mamá que me bajó de la orejay me llevó para arriba…”Para quienes nunca oyeron hablar de la Papa de Hortensia, su identik decía:vieja sucia y borracha que recorría las calles de la ciudad insultando a quienesno compraban su producto “bulbos de hortensia”, mas tarde su nombre seperpetuó en la celebre revista de humor cordobés “Hortensia”, creación deAlberto Cognini por donde pasaron grandes de la gráfica como Cris, el negroFontanarosa, entre otros.Hoy, ese puñado de recuerdos vive intacto en la Casa de Pepino, a través dela reproducción de algunas tapas de “Hortensia” junto a sus personajes“Negrazón” y “Chaveta” en tamaño natural.

There is a place of Guemes neighborhood that still keeps in its corners customs,uses and even anecdotes from the Cordoba of the XIX and XX centuries; it is the CulturalCenter Pepino’s House,formerly a house and business built in the shape of a ship in 1914by Jose Tucci,an Italian immigrant.Don Tucci or “Pepino” and his wife raised there four sonsand one daughter,who married Bruno Puccini and left Jose and Mercedes as descendants.Talking with Mercedes Puccini about anecdotes in the house,she remembered: “… When Iwas 5 or 6 years old more or less I remember listening screams outside the house .I was notallowed to go along that side (the room where the entrance to the basement is located),but Iwent there anyway,I neared the place,put a crate to reach the window and I saw it, I saw it!the“Papa de Hortensia”. There was the old woman…I remember …, she shouted …,insulted,then the police came to take her… and this rude woman lifted her skirt and told them: “¡…eatthis police officer! “¡eat it!,”Suddenly I felt a hard pull… it was my mum who pull me down bythe ear and took me upstairs…”For those who have never heard about the Papa de Hortensia, her identik said: dirty and drunk oldwoman who walked down the streets insulting those people who would not buy her product“hydrangea bulbs”. Later her name perpetuated in the local famous humor magazine “Hortensia”,a creation of Alberto Cognini; big graphic designers like Cris, the negro Fontanarosa -among others-formed part of this creation.At present, that bunch of memories is still intact at Pepino’s House, through the pictures in some of“Hortensia” covers together with its characters “Negrazón” and “Chaveta” in natural size.
