CentroHistóricoHistorical Center - The Obispo Mercadillo Chapel

La figura de Fray Manuel de Mercadillo pasócomo una ráfaga por la Ciudad de Córdoba. Solamentecinco años desde la llegada hasta su muerte en 1704fueron suficientes para ser recordado en una calle quehoy lleva su nombre y un monumento históriconacional llamado “La Casa del Obispo Mercadillo”.

Por Bula Papal el mencionado Obispo trasladó en1699 la sede episcopal de la Diócesis del Tucumándesde Santiago del Estero a Córdoba y junto con ella ElColegio Real y el Seminario bajo la protección de Santo Tomas deAquino. Los primeros años residió en el convento de los dominicos hastaque en 1703 adquirió una propiedad frente a la plaza mayor(actualmente Rosario de Santa Fe 39) lo suficientemente espaciosa paraalbergar las dos instituciones: diez cuartos de vivienda, un alto con balcón a laplaza, cocina, huerta y dos sitios baldíos colindantes para continuar la obra.Tras la muerte del Obispo, la propiedad sufrió numerosas transformaciones ypasó por varios dueños hasta que uno de ellos, Francisco Bravo, por cláusulatestamentaria dejó en manos del Obispado de Córdoba una pequeñaedificación de mediados del siglo XVIII cuya autoría se le atribuye a AntonioGonzálezMerguete. Secomponede laentradaprincipal abovedadade ladrillo,cal y canto rodado con puerta de madera de algarrobo tachonada, enmarcadapor dos fuertes pilastras, sostén del coqueto balcón combado de hierro que seencuentra en la planta alta, a la que se accede por una escalera posterior.Hoy, bajo jurisdicción municipal, este edificio que claramente no fuehabitado por el Obispo Mercadillo, luce más bello que nunca gracias a laintervención del arquitectoMiguel Angel Roca quien lo rescató apelandoa un contraste visual: el ladrillo visto, símbolo de las construcciones de fines delsiglo XX hace de escenario envolvente para que la pequeña construcción deblancos muros, piedra y calicanto no pase inadvertida.

FrayManuel deMercadillo’s figure flashed through the City of Cordoba. Only five years fromhis arrival until his death in 1704 were enough to be remembered in a street that currently has hisname and in a national historic monument called “Casa del Obispo Mercadillo”.By means of Papal Bull the Bishop moved in 1699 the episcopal see of the Diocese of Tucuman fromSantiago del Estero to Cordoba and with it The Colegio Real (Royal School) and the Seminary underthe protection of St. Tomas de Aquino. During the first years he lived in the Dominicans convent untilin 1703 he acquired a property opposite the main square (currently Rosario de Santa Fe 39)spacious enough to lodge both institutions: ten living quarters, a top floorwith a balcony overlookingthe square, kitchen, vegetable garden and two adjoining vacant lots to continue the work.After the Bishop’s death, the property went through several transformations and had numerousowners until one of them, Francisco Bravo, by means of a testamentary clause, left in the hands ofthe Bishopric of Cordoba a small mid-XVIII century buildingwhose authorship is attributed to AntonioGonzalez Merguete. It includes the main entrance with a vault made up of brick, lime and boulderwith a studded carob wooden door, framed by two strong pilasters, support of the beautiful balconywith wrought iron that is on the top floor, to which it can be accessed through a back staircase.At present,undermunicipal jurisdiction, this building, which clearly wasn’t inhabited by the BishopMercadillo, looksmore beautiful than ever thanks to the intervention of the architectMiguel AngelRocawho rescued it appealing to a visual contrast: brick facade, a symbol of the end of XX centuryconstructions, makes a sweeping scenario so that the small constructionof white walls, stone and calicanto doesn’t go unnoticed.

06 Si caminamos por calle obispo Trejo hacia el sur, seguramente y casi sinpensarlo nos detendremos en la esquina de calle Caseros y no es para menos,porque la majestuosidad de la Manzana Jesuítica obliga a elevar la mirada yretrotraernos al siglo XVII, cuando los jesuitas eligieron a Córdoba para el granproyecto educativo: La Universidad.

Ahora, desde la misma esquina, la propuesta es mirar hacia el ángulo sur dela plazoleta donde se construyó una casa de esquema colonial: La casa deMario Marca, actual facultad de derecho de la Universidad. Si bien es unaconstrucción del siglo XIX, por sus armónicas líneas no desentona con elconjunto jesuítico.

Construida en 1872 por el arquitecto Bettolli tiene dos ingresos con susrespectivas fachadas, puertas jerarquizadas por balcones sostenidos poratlantes de espaldas encorvadas, dos patios en su estructura original y una

organización externa e interna que dejan ver simetría y proporciones de laexpresión plástica manierista.

Por sus habitaciones transitaron los pasajeros del hotel Europa y tras serconvertidas en aulas, hospedó a las alumnas de la Escuela Normal de Maestrasfundada 1884. El edificio luego alojó a la Municipalidad y finalmente pasó ala Universidad Nacional que ubicó la Facultad de Medicina y luego Abogacía.

Al establecerse el Museo de la Universidad en el año 2000 muchos espaciosdel Rectorado (ubicado al frente) fueron convertidos en salas museales,disminuyendo la capacidad de la facultad. Por tal motivo se convocó alarquitecto Miguel Ángel Roca para aumentar la superficie de la Facultad deAbogacía. El restauróy reciclóel primerpatio, añadió una obra nueva de 4.500metros cuadrados en el segundo construyendo aulas alrededor de un vacíocentral de tres niveles; finalmente en el año 2001 habilitó otra nuevaampliación, poniendo a la antigua cátedra de abogacía en un lugar devanguardia.

If wewalk along Obispo Trejo street to the south, surely and almostwithout thinking about it, we will stop on the corner of Caseros street andyou cannot expect less because the majesty of the Jesuit Block compels tolook upwards and go back to the XVII century, when the Jesuits choseCordoba for the great educational project: The University.

Now, from the same corner, the proposal is to look towards the southangle of the small square where a colonial-style house was built: MarioMarca’s house, present School of Law of the University. Although it is a XIX centuryconstruction, due to its harmonious lines, it does not clash with the Jesuit design.

Built in 1872 by the architect Bettolli, it has two entrances with their respective facades, importantdoors highlighted by balconies supported by atlantes with curved backs, two patios in their originalstructure, and an external and internal organization that show symmetry and proportions of theMannerist plastic expression.

Its rooms were inhabited by passangers of the Europa hotel and after being turned into classrooms,it lodged the female students from the Escuela Normal de Maestras (Teachers’ School) founded in1884. The building later made the Town Hall work within its premise, and finally it was given to theNational University which included the School of Medicine and later the School of Law.

By being established theMuseum of the University in the year 2000, a lot of spaces that belonged tothe Rector’s premises (located opposite) becamemuseum rooms, diminishing the space for the School.For this reason the architect Miguel Angel Roca was called to increase the surface of the School of

Law. He restored and recycled the first patio, he added a new construction of 4.500square meters in the second one, building classrooms around a central space of threelevels. Finally in the year 2001 he authorized a new extension, placing the old lawdepartment at the forefront.

Cruza la ciudad, entre muros de piedra y vigilado por dos hileras detipas, un sereno y domado arroyo “La Cañada”, que ya olvidó las miradastemerosas de los cordobeses ante sus rugientes aguas embravecidas que sellevaban todo a su paso, para luego volver a su cauce dibujadocaprichosamente a lo largo de los siglos.Unos metros antes de ingresar al corazón de Barrio Güemes esteemblemáticoarroyodescribíaunagrancurvaquepasabapordetrásde la actual escuela Roque Sáenz Peña y tras este edificio unaprofunda barranca que, quienes la miraron desde la AvenidaVélez Sarsfield no dudaron en bautizarla como “El Pocito”.Así entre curvas y contra curvas, los vecinos de Pueblo Nuevo(actual barrio Güemes) aprendieron a convivir con él,adaptando la forma de sus viviendas a esa líneaserpenteante trazada por el arroyo y en algunos casoshasta llegar a... curvar los muros!!! Esa fue la gran ideadel ingeniero José Bettolli Thaler que, en 1914 adaptóla forma de una casa a la topografía del terreno concurso de agua incluido. El lugar albergaría un negocio deramos generales administrado por don José Tucci, a quien la chispacordobesa lo apodó “Pepino” por asociación con un payaso del momento.Hoy la antigua casona es el acogedor centro cultural “Casa de Pepino”.Solo basta con situarse en su pintoresco balcón, mirar hacia el sur e imaginaraquella época de La Cañada caprichosa y rebelde que hizo de una parte de laciudad, casi una Venecia cordobesa...

It crosses the city, between stone walls and watching along two rows of trees, a calm andunder control stream “La Cañada”, which has already forgotten the fearful look of the local peoplebefore its roaring raging waters that carried all before it, to later return to normality, its bed havingbeen drawn along the centuries.

A few meters before entering the heart of Güemes neighborhood, this emblematic stream formeda great curve that went along behind the current Roque Saenz Peña school and at the back of thisbuilding a deep slope, which those who looked at it from Velez Sarsfield avenue did not doubtcalling it “El Pocito”.

Thus among curves and in reverse, the neighbors of Pueblo Nuevo (present Güemesneighborhood) learnt to live with it, adapting the form of their houses to that serpentine linedrawn by the stream and even in some cases to the point of… curving the walls! That was thegreat idea of the engineer Jose Bettolli Thaler who, in 1914, adapted the shape of a house to thetopography of the land with watercourse included. En nuestro país, impulsado por Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, la creaciónde los zoológicos respondió a la idea de promover el cultivo de las ciencias. Enconcordancia coneste criterio yde lamanodelnaturalista alemán JoséScherer,Córdoba inauguró su jardín zoológico en 1915 en un espacio detopografía muy accidentada del parque Sarmiento “La Barranca de los loros”.14 hectáreas forestadas con especies autóctonas y exóticas como eucaliptos,jacarandaes, coníferas, palmeras, aguaribay, acacias, aromos, retamas,magueyy laureles fueron el marco natural para instalar los primeros animales donadospor el mismo Scherer quien además proyectó las instalaciones que losalbergarían en un lenguaje arquitectónico claramente pintoresquista que se

aproximaba al habitad o el origen de sus usuarios, claro que no es el únicoestilo, solo basta comenzar el recorrido para descubrir la riqueza arquitectónicaque encierra esta jungla urbana.La verja y portón de ingreso por calle Rondeau de estilo clasicista, es obra deJuan Villella con gruesos pilares almohadillados que incluyen las boleterías,imprimieron austeridad sin quitar monumentalidad al conjunto. Recién en1942 se construyó la nueva portada de ingreso desde el parque Sarmiento enbaseal proyecto racionalistadel arquitectoMiguel JuárezCáceres caracterizadopor la simplificación de las formas, diseño geométrico, eliminando todoornamento para centrarse en la funcionalidad.Ya en el interior, el diseño de la casa de “Taruca”, el elefante, atribuido alarquitecto Kronfuss guarda cierta similitud con las toranas de las estupasbudistas formadas por dos pilares y tres arquitrabes horizontales ligeramentecurvos (la India tiene una deidad que se representa con rostro de elefante).Otra situación similar encontramos en la jaula de los monos que muestra unalínea sumamente simplificada de la arquitectura indomusulmana con cúpulasesféricas.Desandandoseguimos descubriendomasvariedades arquitectónicas, como elcastillito feudal con sus almenas, torretas y cornisas de ligera influencia en laobradeGaudí, quealbergóensus comienzosunserpentario, luegounacuarioy hoy simplemente un ornamento.Ahora es el turno del estilo grutesco con cuevas y peñascos en el laguitoartificial de las aves acuáticas y rugosos troncos de mampostería en lospuentecitos japoneses, obra de Juan Puig; finalmente y para cerrar este raidarquitectónico, un serpentario inaugurado en 1973 que se resuelve con estilosimplista.Y por si algo le faltaba, desde lo alto una soberbia estatua de la Libertadportando el escudo de Córdoba, custodia celosamente este tesoro cordobés.

IIn our country, motivated by Domingo FaustinoSarmiento, the creation of zoos responded to the ideaof encouraging the promotion of the sciences.With thiscriterion and together with the German naturalist JoseScherer, Cordoba inaugurated its zoological garden in 1915 in aspace of very rough topography of Sarmiento park “The Gully of the parrots”.

14 forested hectareswith local and exotic species like eucaliptus, jacarandas, conifers, palmtrees,aguaribays, acacias, aromos, retamas, maguey and laurels were the natural setting to bring thefirst animals donated by Scherer himself. He also designed the facilities that would lodge themin an architectural design clearly picturesque that looked like the habitat or the place of origin;of course it is not the only style, as soon as you go through the place you will discover thearchitectural richness that encloses this urban jungle.

The Renaissance style fence and entrance door through Rondeau street, Juan Villella’s work, withthick pillars where the ticket offices are located have provided austerity without taking outsplendour to the structure. Only in 1942 the new entrance door from Sarmiento parkwas built;it was based on the rationalist project of the architect Miguel Juarez Caceres characterized bythe simplification of forms, geometric design, leaving aside all kinds of ornaments to focus onfunctionality.

Once in the interior, the design of the house of “Taruca”, the elephant, attributed to the architectKronfuss, keeps a certain similarity with the toranas of the Buddhist estupas made up of twopillars and three horizontal slightly curved architraves (India has a deity represented by meansof the face of an elephant). Another similar situation can be found in the jail of the monkeyswhich shows an extremely simplified line of the Hindo-Moslem architecture with sphericaldomes.

On themain avenue of Colonia Caroya it is situated the oldest andmostwell-knownwine cellar of Cordoba: La Caroyense, currently, one of the icon-touristic resources ofColonia Caroya and a visit of “the Wine roads” that you cannot miss.

Cristo Redentor Ñu Pora:Obra del escultor Cortinovis construida en1936, ubicada en la cima del cerro homónimo a 830 msnm en medio deun exuberante parque. Se aprecian excelentes vistas panorámicas de RíoCeballos y Córdoba, especialmente cuando las luces de la ciudadcomienzan a encenderse.

Paseo H. Francia y Anfiteatro R. Rojas:Espacio de encuentro y paseodonde se realiza la tradicional “Feria de los Artesanos”, además es el“KM 0” referencial de los Circuitos Turísticos de Sierras Chicas. En suanfiteatro griego, se realizan eventos y espectáculos.

Capilla Histórica:Concluida en 1873, surgió por voluntad y esfuerzo delos vecinos, bajo la advocación de Nuestra Sra. de los Dolores. Hoy es uncentro cultural para exposiciones, disertaciones, obras de teatro entreotras actividades.

Hasta el siglo XV el lugar estaba poblado porcomechingones, que tenían algunos lugares sagrados. En elsiglo XVI con la llegada de los españoles se estableció, a partir deuna merced real, Jaimes quien fundó el 30 de octubre de1585 la estancia que originaría el actual núcleopoblacional. En su estancia crea un oratorio “SanAntonio de Padua”, éste se transformó en capilla, que alestar sobre una colina lo llamaron la Capilla del Monte.Hasta fines del siglo XIX fue solo una aldea y luegopor la actividad de Adolfo Doering el sitio comenzóa ser atractivo para la gente adinerada de la ciudadde Córdoba que edificó grandes e interesantescaserones.En el último cuarto del siglo XX, gracias al clima y lospaisajes, porteños y santafesinos se radicaron enCapilla del Monte duplicando la población.La iglesia que le dio el nombre a Capilla del Monte, se ubica apocos Km. al este respecto del actual centro urbano y a medioKm. de la original estación ferroviaria, que hasta la décadade los '70 fue el epicentro de Capilla del Monte(cuyo edificio original es la actual Secretaría deTurismo). Capilla del Monte nos invita a disfrutar de paz ytranquilidad en un entorno natural privilegiado,donde los ecos nos devuelven el canto de los pájaros,el rumor del viento, el aroma a espinillos en flor. Descansar enCapilla del Monte, nos permite perder la noción del tiempo, invita a lacontemplación, pasar esos días de descanso, sintiendo, viajando hacia nuestroser interior y también recorriendo un lugar que alberga 427 años dehistoria sumando experiencias que harán mas feliz y rica nuestra vida.

In his estancia hecreated an oratory called “San Antonio de Padua”, this became a

chapel, and since it is on a hill it was given the name The Hill Chapel. Untilthe end of XIX century it was just a hamlet and then, due to theactivity of Adolfo Doering, the place started to become attractive forthe wealthy people of the city of Cordoba who built large andinteresting big houses. In the last quarter of the XX century, due to

the weather and the landscape, people from Buenos Aires and SantaFe settled in Capilla del Monte doubling the population.

The church that gave the name to Capilla del Monte islocated some kilometers to the east regarding the presenturban center and half kilometer away from the railwaystation, which until the 1970’s was the epicenter of Capilla

del Monte (whose original building is the current Tourism Office).

Capilla del Monte invites us to enjoy peace and tranquility in apriviliged natural environment, where the echoes give us back

the singing of the birds, the murmur of the wind, the perfume of theespinillos flowers. Having a rest in Capilla del Monte makes us lose all
