Córdoba has 1200 has of green spaces among parks, places for walking, cycle lanes, multipurpose facilities, squares, and small squares. Three of them, almost surrounding Palacio 6de julio (Palace) and La Cañada, form part of this fall place for walking.

1. Italia Square: Among la Cañada, 27 de Abril street and Ayacucho street, it is located thissmall 4600 square metre triangle created to pay homage to the Italian community in Cordoba, according to some people, or to please the request of an Italian Ambassador who said: “If thereis a España Square there must also be a Italia Square”, according to others.Designed by the well-known local architect Miguel Angel Roca (1982), it represents our watersystem. Four small squares, four hills from which mountain rivers descend to deposit its watersin a lake, are the outcome of the work of several generations of local people along a century, thusallowing the supply of water and energy to Cordoba. At present, this triangle filled with symbolsis full of vivid colors when, in the afternoons, the artisans sell their crafts.

2. Paseo Sobre Monte: Once “Tree-lined avenue walking place”, it was the first green lungof Cordoba created at the request of the first Governor -Mayor, theMarquis Don Rafael de SobreMonte, who upon assumming the position in 1784 started the construction of this walking placeand an aqueduct to provide running water to the city from a pond with a central island. Thelandscapewas fulfilledwith a small square, peach trees, poplars, weepingwillows, wood benches, and even an entrance with marble steps.Howmuch nostalgia from those times: from Sunday romances, and youth excursions, to DomingoSarmiento’s halo that he used to retrace when he visited the docta; are some of the images thatappear again, if for some seconds, we look back to those days.

3. Intendencia Square: A group of big houses from the middle of the XX century in anadvanced state of deterioration, left a place in the block that is included among la Cañada, Caserossreet, Bolivar street, and Duarte Quirós Avenue, to this open space: The Intendencia Square. Nextto it, an underground parking space was also created, both spaces were inaugurated in 1983. Ithad a central fountain that was taken out in the 1990’s and replaced with a glass constructionthat has the Central Office of Intelligent Street Lights and Traffic Control of the City.On the southeast corner “The Malvinas Heroes Carrying a Flag”, work of Marcelo Hepp fromCordoba and some old trees form part of the ornament of this placewhich is ideal for amateada*or an urban mini-relax.

*Mateada:It is a friendly gathering of several people to drink mate and talk.

In the well-kown tale “El libro de arena” (The Book of Sand) Jorge Luis Borges presents aninfinite book, of endless readings, in which the numbering of the pages is not correlative and once yougo to the next page it is imposible to find the previous one again. This metaphor comes when I thinkabout the main characters of the story that we have to talk about in San AlbertoMuseum. Anonymouscharacters who, for almost 400 years, made of this one a dwelling house: members of the Duarte family(1618-1693), the students of the Jesuit University during the running of the Real Convictorio de NuestraSeñora de Montserrat (1693-1782), and the boarders of the Real Hogar de Niñas Huérfanas Nobles(Real Home of Noble Orphan Girls) and School of Pupils (1782 until the present).

I also think about those who with their contemplative, critical and observant look stress again theimportance of this patrimony: in the visitors that came, in those ones that came back, in those that willcome later. Each of them having their own interpretations, real interpretations of the objects, thearchitecture, the history that is present all the time and that looks for themen andwomen of other times.

First a hallway. Then the gardenwith colors and perfumes of colonial cloister. Over there the XVIII centuryhouse with its square patio, pillars joined by circular arches and steps that lead downwards to anunderground world that surprises the public.

The old burial crypt, situated in the underground part of the Chapel, where the deadwere buried joiningin this way, in a perfect circle life and death, everyday life with religion.

In another patio we find the basements that worked first as a grocery store taking advantage of thefreshness that its strategic location provided under the garden and which shortly before the explusionof the Jesuits had the first printing machine, which would be later part of the national territory. Thesame that some years later, already set up in Buenos Aires, would be used to print the revolutionarypamphlets of 1810 and the first newspaper in Argentina, “The Gazetta from Buenos Aires”.

Through the patios, the rooms and galleries, the memory of the inhabitants comes on stage for thevisitor to enjoy an evocative tour along the daily way of living during the XVII, XVIII and XIX centuries.

Due to that daily practice of association, people from Cordoba renamed the avenue-core ofSarmiento Park, Avenida del Dante, as soon as they put the statue (1955) in honor to the Italian authorof the Divina Comedia, Dante Alighieri.

Thus, its real name almost sank into oblivion. It recalls one of the undisputed leaders of themovement,Dr. Deodoro Roca, who brewed the university reform of 1918, which resulted in a great change in theeducational structure not only in Argentina but also in all America.

After a deserved evocation to this great local man, the proposal is to retrace this centenarian artery,at present transformed into a boulevard.

Deodoro Roca Avenue, of just 1,300 metres long did not have its origin with the park, but this latterone was transferred to the city hall in 1897. The French landscape architect Eugenio Courtois, withoutleaving aside the guidelines designed by Thays, marked a significant change in the geography of the parkwhen it added a central artery, not only because it facilitated the traffic in the street, but also because itallowed the installation of two irrigation channels (on both sides of the avenue) that took the watertowards the lake and the plants.

With the passing of the years more changes took place, always with the aim of making it morebeautiful: In 1909 the concession was provided to set up the first mobile café, then three more werecreated, the wooden pergolas from the Rosedal were replaced for others made of concrete andornamental sculpture were introduced like “The kidnapping of the sabinas”, “The Lioness” and “TheDog” among others.

Later, in accordance with the new tendencies related to the open air and health, elements for gympurposes and cycle lane were added, making of it an ideal place for gymnastics. Of course there is alsospace, just by the roadside of the avenue, for those who are away from these prototypes and enjoy theopen air with a good gastronomy. The options vary from fancy restaurants, traditional lomiterias shopsor the beautiful vans that offer the well-known local sandwich called El Choripan.

So… don’t forget to schedule this walk, entertaining at the beginning anddelicious at the end of it.

Entering the bohemian of Güemes neighborhoodmeans going into aworld of colors wherecreativity has no limits, because if you believed that you knew everything, you will surprise yourselfagain with another exotic proposal or some innovating local gastronomic product. From the beginning it developed with the inventiveness of those immigrants who arrived fromremote lands with the dream of making progress. They set up different kinds of businesses, theycombined the European gastronomywith the local one by adapting themselves to the poverty at theend of the XIX century and beginning of the XX century, they also knew how to have fun in

bodegones (wine-selling places) by dancing to the 2x4 rhythm, serenading until dawn oruntil some ghost came up from the water of La Cañada and finished the night.

Could it be that the XXI century keeps intact those goblins from the pastand the living nostalgia of the heirs, determined to never let the lightof Guemes come to an end, made this traditional local neighborhoodbecome the indisputable chosen place on weekends? To go through it fully we will start from Belgrano and Montevideostreets, excelent panoramic to seewhat is awaiting us. An important artgallery and two blocks with antiques, are the beginning. Then, the LatinAmerican Museum of Arts shows the most outstanding pieces of thedifferent fairs. From the opposite sidewalk, two picturesque balconies willtempt you to stop and try some country afternoonmeal or why not drinkinga Fernet with coke.Getting to the corner of Achaval Rodriguez is arriving atthe center of the neighborhood where the Arts Walk is the main attraction:more than 80 stands of art offer their products while on the other side of thestreet, the musical proposals go beyond the sidewalks.

In addition, round the corner, La Cañada has become a pedestrian area to sowamong women the memory of this indelible walk.

Cities rise and grow with therythm, customs and passion given bytheir people. Thus, each city createsthe personality that identifies them forever, like a trademark.Buenos Aires city, for example, created the great local myth of the coffee table and its bars, aplace of encounter with friends and artists who got together to chat and to argue. In this way, Cordoba people characterized by a half cunning half rebellious temperament, created a decalogue of passions with an undisputed first place: the RALLY.Our geography full of hills, valleys and pampas is the ideal place for this activity. For many yearsit has attracted thousands of local people who, enduring all kinds of weather inclemencies, form a human cordon by the roadside for the astonishment of the world press and for theforeign pilots themselves who see in this a unique social event in the world. With an organized ritual, the local people start to live the competition: They plan their locationin the hills, they invite the friends that will form part of the group, they make the necessaryexcuses that justify the absence to the place of work, and they get the inevitable barbecue andFernet drink that will guarantee the success to this ritual of the encounter with friends. For this reason, whoever wants to live the Rally fully and feel like “a Local” for one day, followthe previous instructions and will be part of the myth.

CórdobaacadémicaUniversidadBlasPascalBlas Pascal University - To Know and to Know how to do

.

The current university, like the traditional university, must suit its purpose according tothe conditions that characterize the society in which it lives, through the use of available toolsand technologies, most of which are the result of the innovating action of the university itself.Blas Pascal University works on three pillars that not only guarantee an integral education butwhich also result in a prompt and good insertion of our graduates in the professional field:

“To Know and to Know how to do”, because the theoretical knowledge is very important, but also its application in real situations, as the profession demands. In today’s society, we areconvinced that a good university education requires an appropriate combination of those twodimensions.

“Quality Teaching”, more personalized, with tutorship that is included for students in theirlearning process, good library services, and specially prepared reading material. And also, because the university proposes ambitious, demanding objectives, but at the same time itsupports every student for them to achieve those objectives in their own right.

“Teaching for creativity and innovation”, since those are the requirements of the currentsociety andwill be evenmore demanding in tomorrow’s society when the present students willhave to practice the professionwhich they have chosen. Focus on project work, training periodsbased on problems, lab work and other methodologies developed with that aim contribute tomake this posible.

The beginnings of this historical city, situated at 50 Km. to the north of theCity of Cordoba, are linked to its aboriginal past and to the stamp of the religiousorder that left lastingtraces that todayareconsideredWorldHeritage,TheJesuits.

The Ranch: In 1618 the Jesuits got for the price of eight thousand pesos: twentythousand stumps of vineyards, amill and some animals fromthe Guanusacate . In 1620 itreceived its present name, half of it amonastery and half of it a factory. The Jesuits’undertaking includedwage-earning natives and almost three hundred slaves, whodid thehardwork. Latin, Spanish, Italianandalsonative andAfrican languageswere spoken in thecountryhouse. The farmhousesbuilt for Indians and slaveswere changing for constructionsof brick, stone and tiles. The central patio, closed on two sides by a two-level cloister, andwide corridors with semicircular arches, define the proper style of the Company. TheChurch, of sober facade and unique nave, shows the impressive ornamented domewithnativeorigin relief in its interior. The vineproductionof the Farm reached suchahighqualityresult anddevelopment that its successwentbeyondborders. The lagrimilla, exquisitewinemade from the grape juice, had such singular flavor that became the first Americanwinetasted at the King’s table. Since 1946, it became National JesuiticMuseum, keeping theoriginal conditions of the undertaking.

The City: Jesús Maria, owner of the particular charm that harbors the soul of a town, offers the valuable history of its past, expresses its solid present and forecasts a promissingfuture. Today, it is a city of 35,000 inhabitants with an importantsocial, economic, andcultural development.
