Everything begins around the years 1894 and 1896, when the first steps of the famous soccer game are taken in Costa Rica. Soccer also developed in the province of Alajuela, where La Liga had its origin. Around those years, coffee growers’ children who studied in England, plus the contribution of Englishmen who were working in our country constructing a tram system in our capital city, were the ones who introduced the practice of soccer in the well-known park called “La Sabana” in San José.Around 1902 and 1904, the daily practice of such sport occurs more strongly and it should be noted that the provinces of Alajuela, Heredia, and Cartago made a reputation in an effort to roll the ball.

As a curiosity, the soccer field used by 1908 in Alajuela was the one called Plaza Iglesias and the first fire chief in Costa Rica, Mr. Samuel Montandón, was who brought the first soccer ball and made known the rules of how to play the new sport.

In 1910, the first Alajuela team makes its appearance, known as “El Electra”, which would play, in the current soccer field in EL Llano, against the “Oriente” team from San José; the victory was for the Alajuela team. On that occasion, the Alajuela team, “El Electra”, received a set of medals from Mr. Ricardo Jiménez Oreamuno. History says that by 1912 a team called “Juan Rafael Mora” and another one known as “Once de Abril”, established on April 11, 1914, came on the scene. The latter is considered to be the most immediate antecedent to the current team of Liga Deportiva Alajuelense.

Seven former players of the “Once de Abril” team conceived the beginning of the L.D.A. It is on June 18, 1919 that the name, the sentiment, and the institution called Asociación Liga Deportiva Alajuelense were stemmed from the founders at that moment: Luis Castaing Castro, Francisco Rímola Di Biasso, Bartolo Rosabal Segura, Jorge Oreamuno Calderón, Tito Livio Solera Castro, and Jorge Luis Solera Oreamuno who, gathered together in the Old “Salón Paris” on the west side of the central park in the province of Alajuela, made the decision to establish this new entity, which today is a passion among its fans.

Recalling the first board of that time, it was made up by Mr. Ramón Aguilar Soto (president), Jorge Oreamuno Calderón (secretary), Alberto Sánchez Mondragón (treasurer), Tobías Sánchez Mondragón (auditor), Tito Livio Solera Castro (Board member), Francisco Rosich Bou (Board member), Francisco Rímola Di Biasso, Luis Castaing Castro (Board member), Bartolo Rosabal Segura (Board member), and Jorge Luis Solera Oreamuno (General Captain). In addition to the special date from that time, the first game played by the Liga Deportiva Alajuelense took place on August 2, 1919 in the province of Cartago, getting a 3-to-1 victory.

To highlight additional achievements of La Liga, we should mention the following: Alajuelense was one of the 7 teams that constituted the Liga Nacional de Fútbol in 1921. The other teams were: La Libertad, Sociedad Gimnástica Española, Club Sport Herediano, Club Sport Cartaginés, Club Sport La Unión de Tres Ríos, and Sociedad Gimnástica Limonense.

New Decade of Success:

The Liga Deportiva Alajuelense is the only soccer club to have won at least one championship in every decade since its founding;

besides, it has both competed in world tours and been home to legendary teams. It has fought epic

sports battles in the national history.

Great characters have stood out during the team’s history; emblematic soccer

players who have left a mark in the development of this organization at different times such as Mr. José Luis Solera Oreamuno, Alejandro Morera Soto, Salvador Soto Villegas, better-known as the “Indio Buroy”, José Luis “Chime” Rojas, Carlos Alvarado Villalobos, Juan José Gámez Rivera, Errol Daniels Hibbert, Juan Ulloa Ramírez, Alejandro González,

Mauricio Montero Chinchilla, Javier Delgado Prado, Wilmer López

Arguedas, and Luis Antonio Marín Murillo to name a few examples of

those great players who have been part of this Institution.

Similarly, its directors have distinguished for their vision for the future in order to keep the “manudo”

team always at the forefront of national soccer. We could

name Mr. Ramón Aguilar Soto, first president, Tobías Sánchez Mondragón, Jorge Oreamuno Calderón, Jorge Rojas Espinoza, Armando Saborío Vargas, Carlos Bolaños Araya, driving force behind the purchase of land where the stadium lies (in 1940), José Llobet Comadrán, Mr. César Rojas Ulloa, and Mr. Roberto Chacón Murillo who was responsible for remodeling the Morera Soto towards the end of 70s and early 80s.

In 1960, the Alajuela team made the world tour starting in Costa Rica on September 17 of that year. In 78 days, the L.D.A. team played 24 games, won 12, drew 3 and lost 7 times. They scored 71 goals and allowed 47; Juan Ulloa Ramírez stood out as the top scorer.

The red and black mark does not vanish, since the club has imposed significant records at the international level; for example, being the first Costa Rican team to win the title of CONCACAF in 1986, competing for the Copa Interamericana against River Plate in 1987, and being the first Central American club to compete in the Copa Merconorte in 2000, an event under the auspices of the Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol (Conmebol).

In the nineties and the beginning of the XXI Century, L.D.A. confirms its hegemony as the greatest soccer club in Costa Rica.During that period, La Liga achieved the national title four times with a very important generation of young players (1991-1992-1996-1997) and equal number of subchampionships, always standing in the elite group of national soccer. The title as winner of the Torneo de Grandes de Centroamérica in 1995 must be added to the list of achievements.

What the team accomplished from the 1999-2000 season until that of 2003 deserves a special mention; during that time, L.D.A. became the most important Sports Institution in Costa Rica.

On the sports front, four consecutive National Championships were achieved (1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2002-2003), being lord and master of those tournaments because the team had to play the finals only in the 2001-2002 season, since in the other competitions, it had won during the opening and the closing segments of the tournaments, which automatically proclaimed it champion. During its four-time championship achievement, the L.D.A. played 174 games, winning 118 of them, drawing 38, and losing 19; the team scored 384 goals, received 159 goals, and attained a total of 391 points, which gives it a performance ratio of 75%.

The “red and blacks” were not content with being the best in Costa Rica, but also they achieved a continuous, prominent, and successful participation at an international level, which lead them to winning the titles of the Unión Centroamericana de Fútbol (UNCAF) in 2000 and of the Copa de Campeones de la Confederación de Fútbol (CONCACAF) in 2004.

Apart from that, the team finished fifth in the Copa Merconorte in 2000 with the participation of 16 teams from South America and Mexico; we were the first Central American team to compete in an event of the Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol (Conmebol).

From 1999 to the championship title in Concacaf, the L.D.A. played 57 games, winning 29, drawing 18, and losing 10. The team scored 104 goals, allowed 33, attained 105 points, and achieved a performance ration of 61%.

All the above was accomplished while being the basic unit of the national team that qualified for the World Cup Korea and Japan; at the same time, the L.D.A. also served as basis of the U-23 national team that qualified for the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004.

It should be also noted that on November 11, 2000, the L.D.A. was ranked number 27 in the Club World Ranking, which is the best position a national or Central American team has ever held.In 2005, the team became national champion again. It was not until the 2010 winter tournament when the team would return to the top of soccer by the hand of its coach Óscar Ramírez; such achievement was repeated in the next two tournaments thus becoming three-time champions.

It should be highlighted that the L.D.A has been three-time national champion on three different occasions; the first time that the team was three-time champion occurred in 1958, 1959, and 1960. Four decades later, a group of players and a staff of coaches were brought together and they returned to be three-time champions, as were several occasions when two consecutive titles were achieved, but the third in a row refused.

This generation began its successful journey in 1999 and ended with a four-time championship in 2003. The last time a three-time championship was attained occurred when the current generation won the winter 2010, summer 2011, and winter 2011 tournaments.

Among the team’s major achievements are: the three-time championship corresponding to the Winter 2010, Summer 2011, and Winter 2011 tournaments; in addition, the team has attained 24 more championships in the years of: 1928, 1939, 1941, 1945, 1949, 1950, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1966, 1970, 1971, 1980, 1983, 1984, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2005.

Moreover, the team has achieved the following 20 subchampionships: 1930, 1938, 1944, 1952, 1957, 1962, 1965, 1967, 1969, 1972, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2006, Summer 2008, and Winter 2008.

We should not forget the international achievements in CONCACAF:Champion in 1986 and 2004; Subchampion in: 1971, 1992, and 1999.

The Liga Deportiva Alajuelense is a team that was born from the people and for the people; it is true to its colors and its tradition; it has a successful history. The Liga Deportiva Alajuelense is a team with the heart of a champion.

Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto - Scotiabank

In the 1940s, Carlos Bolaños Araya was the driving force behind the purchase of land where the Stadium upstands today. In the 70s, the remodeling of it was under the guidance of Roberto Chacón Murillo.

The stadium was named Alejandro Morera Soto, in 1961, in honor of former Alajuela player and Costa Rican soccer glory; in fact, Mr. Morera Soto’s actual heart is buried under the East Side Grandstand. The stadium’s capacity is 17,895 spectators.

In August 3, 2011, the L.D.A. president, Raúl Pinto Odio, along with the General Manager of Scotiabank agree that this entity becomes an official sponsor of the club; therefore, the stadium

gets renamed Alejandro Morera Soto-Scotiabank; such an agreement runs until the end of 2013.

The Stadium had the best natural turf in Costa Rica and Central America until 2009 when a modern synthetic turf was installed.

Inside the stadium there are: 4 futsal courts, the main soccer court, two sports gyms (One for the Minor League called “Juan José Gamez” and another one for the First Division called “Carlos Alvarado Villalobos”), and the care clinic among other departments.

The walls in the meeting room of the club hold a total of 500 trophies, which show the achievements of La Liga throughout its history.
