Pedro joined the SFP’s Business Liaison team in 2013 and is currently holding the position of Director of Fisheries Markets, where his efforts are focused on bridging the gap between fisheries with ongoing improvement initiatives and market recognition. He is a marine biologist, with a Master’s degree in Mariculture and Fisheries Science and Technology from the Scottish Highlands & Islands University . He has over 15 years of experience working with Spanish fisheries and aquaculture operations, as well as sustainable seafood supply chains around the world. His previous experiences include fisheries observer, technical assistance to fishermen’s associations, as well as advisor on responsible sourcing and labelling of sustainable seafood products. As fisheries consultant, Pedro was instrumental in leading the first MSC certification in Spanish waters and has worked to improve small-scale fisheries marketing programmes in different countries. The eighth edition of the ARVI International Conference on the Future of Fishing will focus on the operational differences between EU fleets and joint ventures with respect to other fleets that operate in the same fishing grounds and markets and, in relation to the latter, how labels and certifications can be tools that make it possible to compensate these imbalances. The main questions for debate will be about equity and equality in fishing standards, that is the “Level Playing Field”. It is precisely this imbalance that has been favouring the progressive replacement of our fleet by others from third countries with non-comparable activity standards that facilitate access to marine resources with respect to fleets governed by EU standards, including competitive differences in terms of facilitating ships renewal, so necessary to improve energy efficiency, safety, and habitability on board. On the second day, the panel will address the reasons why both standardized and reinforcing labelling as well as certifications can help consumers to establish the differentiation between marine products that are caught in a sustainable way by well-regulated fleets and those that originate in fleets operating under unfair competitive advantages. After 15 years in the consulting and financial intermediation sector as sales director at DUCK FIN at national level, in 2008 he joined NODOSA as part of the management staff, carrying out different tasks, focusing the most relevant one, on the search and consolidation of new markets for the shipyard, as well as its expansion worldwide since 2011, In recent years, both its trajectory and that of NODOSA have gone hand in hand, achieving different milestones for both including the award of numerous contracts and tenders at national and international level, especially in Europe, Africa and America.
