C udahy is proud to let you know that we have been working hard to make

this summer a Cudahy summer! You and your family can enjoy improved recreational facilities, safe parks, and family-focused events all summer long.

For example, at Cudahy Park, a brand new basketball court is already a favorite with kids and adults, and a new bike path fol-lowing the L.A. River now con-nects Cudahy all the way to Griffith Park in Los Angeles!

Also, Cudahy is celebrating our Nation’s 232nd Birthday, Independence Day, a day early on Thursday, July 3rd at Cuda-hy Park. The fun starts at 3 p.m. with pony rides, a petting zoo, jumpers, game booths and food. The celebration culminates with our fabulous fireworks display, starting at 9 p.m.

As always, Cudahy is constantly improving our city and the best ways of doing that are through safety initiatives and the creation of better education opportunities.

As part of our on-going public safety program, I am proud to an-nounce that Cudahy will be install-ing state-of-the-art, flashing warn-ing lights in several crosswalks near our schools and parks. The flashing lights will signal to drivers over 100-feet away that pedestrians are cross-ing.

For over 11 years, Rosa and Adan Melendez have offered motor vehicle services for the convenience of Cudahy resi-dents and out-of-town visitors. Auto registration, title transfers, VIN verification, and auto insur-ance are just a few of the ser-vices they provide.

With many commercial

When the con-struction is finished, the new school will serve Cudahy children with smaller class sizes and an excellent learning environ-ment.

The growth of new and existing busi-nesses is a hallmark of a successful city. The City of Cudahy is always looking to support our businesses while creating opportunities for new ventures, such as attracting new shopping centers. That’s why we are supporting a facelift for the shopping center on the corner of At-lantic Blvd. and Hartle Ave., which will bring a modern look consistent with the growth along Cudahy’s Atlantic business corridor. Also, the city is looking at a new 74-acre retail shopping development coming to the Atlantic Ave. and Patata Street area!

Transición a Televisión Digital Demorada Cudahy Noticias

When Cudahy resi-dents need DMV services, they don’t have to wait in

long lines. Thanks to the Melen-dez family, a short visit to Motor Vehicle Registration & Insurance Services on Atlantic Boulevard will get them on their way.

In support of the Los An-geles Unified School District, Cudahy community leaders were on hand at the groundbreaking of a new Elementary School and Early Education Center at Live Oak and Atlantic.

Cudahy is proud to let you know that we have been working hard to make

this summer a Cudahy summer! You and your family can enjoy improved recreational facilities, safe parks, and family-focused events all summer long.

A Message from George Perez, Cudahy City Manager

Keeping Momentum:New Programs and ParksKey Cudahy Resurgence

Whether it’s hard economic times or not, Cudahy is com-mitted to giving its residents a better life though innovative programs, services and re-sources.

Your support has helped the city create programs and services we launched last year and will continue to grow in 2009. In February alone, we cut a ribbon on the new Cu-dahy River Park, provided a Safety Fair as part of our Town Hall, and provided a Citizen-ship Fair as part of our Food Distribution program.

These programs are a result of the City Council listening to you and looking for ways to help you and your fam-ily. Among the greatest needs mentioned were health edu-cation and access, financial health, and safety. Therefore, we initiated the ¡Salud Ahora! (Health Now!) program to provide community events to address the needs and desires of our residents.

Over 750 of you attended our first event, where we made healthy changes to our food distribution program. That event was hosted by Univi-sion Anchor Antonio Valverde, featured a healthy cooking demonstration by celebrity chefs Jaime Martin Del Campo and Ramiro Arvizu of La Ca-

The Cudahy City Council is proud to announce that the city opened its fifth public park for the square-mile city. Cudahy River Park, which opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Feb-ruary 24, is at the corner of Clara Street and Riv-er Road, near the Los Angeles River area of the city and will be part of the City’s Bike Path to promote physical activity and outdoor recreation as part of good health.

“One of the distinguishing values of modern democratic societies is their public parks,” said Cudahy’s Mayor. “Not only do our parks provide a

great opportunity to continue the health of our community, it also will help increase the value of our homes and our businesses.”

The Cudahy River Park project started with the acquisition of the land in 2005, where old-er structures were cleared for public use. Cu-dahy River Park joins Cudahy Park, Clara Park, The Clara Extension Pocket Park and Lugo Park to give residents easily accessible open spaces within 10 minutes walking distance of any Cu-dahy resident.

It is also part of a coordinated effort that in-

Financial Health Seminar Assists Residentsin Planning for Economic Challenges Cudahy News

As the United States faced its worst economic downturn in decades, the City of Cudahy took steps to help its residents address the issues by present-ing a Financial Health Seminar and Workshop attended by an estimated 300 residents.

The seminar, which took place at the Elizabeth Learn-ing Center in November, was led by the keynote address of Louis Barajas, a nationally-known financial planner on Univision and CNN, and author of The Latino Journey to Fi-nancial Greatness and Over-worked, Overwhelmed and Underpaid: Simple Steps To Go From Stress To Success.

Mr. Barajas engaged partici-pants by explaining what all the reports from Wall Street mean to the people on Clara Street, Elizabeth Street, Atlantic Av-enue and all of Cudahy. With so much news, even people with steady work lack confi-dence to invest wisely, and Mr. Barajas explained principles of protecting investments and spending wisely.

The workshops featured professionals from government organizations, consumer advo-cacy groups and professionals with experience in tough eco-nomic times. The workshops addressed:

1. Financial Literacy – How to make your money and bank work for you

2. Credit & Credit Repair – How to get credit in the cur-rent market and how to repair

the credit you have.3. The Truth About Fore-closures – Most houses do not need to be abandoned because you can work with lenders and advocacy groups. Also: How to avoid scam artists.

4. First Time Home Buy-ers In A Down Economy – Many people don’t realize that a down economy can be the per-fect time to invest in your first home, and this workshop gave advice on how to be smart about it.

The City of Cudahy was proud to present this event for residents as part of its ongoing ¡SALUD AHORA! initiative and it was described as a proto-type for other cities.

Digital TV Transition Delayed Cudahy News

The change would have taken effect on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, but President Barack Obama signed a bill to delay the switch to digital TV (DTV) to June 12, 2009, after Con-gress passed a bill giving tele-vision stations until June 12, 2009, to shut down their ana-log broadcasts. The reason was to give viewers more time to prepare for the switch to digi-tal signals.

If you use an antenna to watch free, over-the-air tele-vision on an analog TV set – and don’t subscribe to a pay TV ser-vice – then you will be affected by the transition. If you pay for TV services, such as cable or satellite, then you will not need to upgrade.

DTV converter boxes that make digital broadcast signals viewable on analog television sets are available for purchase at electronics stores and each box is expected to cost be-tween $40 and $70. However, households can apply for up to two $40 coupons from the Na-tional Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) that can be used to-ward the purchase of converter boxes although there is now a waiting list for the coupons be-cause federal funding for the program has run out due to the economic crisis.

There are several reasons for the change, mostly that digital broadcasting is more efficient requiring less of the airwaves, which often results in clearer pictures. Once the DTV transi-tion is completed, some tele-vision channels will be turned over to fire and police depart-ments for emergency commu-nication and others are being auctioned to companies to pro-vide new wireless services.

Complete information about the change is available in a va-riety of languages on the in-ternet at www.dtv2009.gov. If you do not have a computer or internet service, the Cudahy Library on Santa Ana Street, across from City Hall, can help you access information.

Cudahy Auto Center Celebrates 25 Years In The Community

The team at Cudahy Auto Center specializes in general auto repair, brakes, suspension, tune-up, oil change, tires, and diagnostics.

Cudahy News

As a fixture in the Cudahy business commu-nity for 25 years, not many things surprise Bill Gudino. He is the General Manager and Owner of Cudahy Auto Center and he prides himself on hon-est work, a fair price and trying to be the best. It’s earned him a loyal following.

But even he had to be surprised when he had a customer travel all the way to Cudahy from San Francisco. “Through the years we have people coming from Fontana, Bakersfield, Rialto, but this one stunned me,” said Gudino.

Cudahy Auto Center, which is at 8017 South At-lantic Avenue, specializes in general auto repair,

brakes, suspension, tune-up, oil change, tires, and diagnostics. Mr. Gudino has three mechanics on staff that are proficient in both foreign and domestic models.

Gudino loves working with the Cudahy communi-ty and says the city is getting better all the time.

“What’s changed in 25 years? It’s friendlier; I see more people, families walking around with their kids. The City staff has been very helpful to us as well” says Gudino.

“We have everything you need here in Cudahy. Post office, barber shop, you name it. Everything. City Hall is just down the street… It’s like a small town in the middle of Los Angeles. I’m very proud to be part of this community.”

In support of the Los An-geles Unified School District, Cudahy community leaders were on hand at the groundbreaking of a new Elementary School and Early Education Center at Live Oak and Atlantic.

Now that you know how some of the City’s projects are progressing, we hope you will enjoy the summer in our city! As always, we invite you to visit City Hall for any assistance. We are here for you!

Jorge Ramirez and his wife Estela have always wanted to open their own business in Cudahy, and a year and

a half ago the Ramirez family took over C-Mart Grocery on the corner of Wilcox Ave. and Santa Ana Street.

“Having lived in Cudahy for many years, we just wanted to bring convenience to local residents,” said Ramirez.

And convenience is what you get.

Open Monday through Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. to “accommodate our customers,”

C-Mart offers products from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and many other Latin American countries.

The neatly arranged shelves offer products found in larger stores. Milk, eggs, cheese, bread, beans, rice, and many name brand products are just a short walk from home. Many customers stop by on their way home from work to pick up items for dinner.

Ramirez is thankful for the “nice people” who shop at his store and to the City of Cudahy for their support of small businesses in the city.

sita Mexicana restaurant. Ad-ditionally, the event featured a health fair that included screenings by clinics and hospi-tals, distribution of consumer education materials by the Office of the Patient Advocate, The California HealthCare Foundation, numerous senior health agencies and more.

With the sharp turn in the economy, the City of Cudahy followed up on the success of the first event by providing a Financial Health Seminar, featuring nationally renowned financial expert Louis Barajas as the keynote speaker. The

seminar included workshops on financial literacy, foreclosure options, and credit repair.

Along with resources for good health, we also want to provide opportunities for family fun in Cudahy. Over the holidays we had our annual Classic Car Christmas Parade, led by Grand Marshal, Univision’s News Anchor Enrique Gutiérrez. The parade route gave the City a chance to show off our revitalized Atlantic Avenue Corridor, with new landscaping, lighting, and easy access to our growing business community.

Lastly, I am proud to an-nounce the grand opening of our newest and fifth park – the Cudahy River Park. The focus

groups highlighted that our res-idents believe our parks make the City of Cudahy a great place to live: although we are only 1.2-square miles, the city has over 17 acres of parks for our residents, including new basketball courts, a bike path, a river walk and a state-of-the-art fitness center at Lugo Park. Our parks provide a clean, con-venient location for guests and residents of the City of Cudahy to exercise and spend quality time in a safe environment.

Thank you for your par-ticipation in making Cudahy great and please come visit us at City Hall or at our monthly Town Hall meetings for any assistance. We look forward to serving you.

Do you think the election of Barrack Obama was historic? Ask Mary Wiley … she has seen 18 different presidents in office. On February 8, she turned 99 and we congratulate her on be-ing a great neighbor for a long time!

Her story is like many in Cu-dahy; She was born in Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, and lost her mother at an early age before coming to the United States. In

1933, she married Ralph Wiley and moved to Cudahy.

Many Cudahy residents know Mary Wiley because she has been actively involved in our com-munity since she moved here in 1952 – that’s 57 years! Many of you know her from her work with the Senior Club and at the Catholic Church. Plus, many Cu-dahy children have been taught to play Piano by Mary over the years.

With her sharp mind, Mary is a whiz at crossword puzzles and knitting. She also enjoys spending time with friends and is proud of her two children, eight grand children, 13 great-grand children and two great-great grand children. That’s 25 more on her branch of the fam-ily tree.

Let’s all give special birth-day wishes to Cudahy’s special lady.
