revista Liturgia y Canción! Seguimos con la celebración del ani-versario de los 100 años de OCP al servicio de la Iglesia, con el interesante artículo “Recuerdos del Editor” escrito para esta serie por nuestro editor emérito John Limb, quien se desempeñó como editor de OCP desde 1992 hasta el año 2017. Este artículo forma parte de la completa serie que se ha programado para este año, como parte de la celebración del centenario de la compañía. Los artículos con cada uno de los editores son parte de nuestras por-tadas en cada edición de nuestra publicación bilingüe. Esperamos que nuestros lectores disfruten de este recorrido por la asombrosa historia de Oregon Catholic Press. En la siguiente edición de la revista, vamos a conocer la experiencia de nuestro editor, y también destacaremos toda la contribución de OCP al servicio de la Iglesia durante los últimos 100 años, en un artículo sobre su historia programado para la última edición de este año.

Jaime Cortez talentoso y popular compositor de OCP, quien es arreglista e intérprete, nacido en Nueva York y criado en El Salvador, escribió para esta edición un interesante artículo que cierra la serie “Cómo educar a nuestros hijos en la fe”. Su expe-riencia en este tema es enriquecedora pues Jaime habla español con fluidez y ha dedicado una gran parte de su ministerio a pro-mocionar la liturgia hispana y a integrar las diferentes culturas que con fe se reúnen para celebrar la Misa.

Liturgia y Canción magazine! We continue to celebrate OCP’s 100th anniversary of service to the Church with another installment of “A Publisher’s Memory,” this time written by our publisher emeritus John Limb, who served as publisher at OCP from 1992 to 2017. This is part of a year-long series that will be reflected on the covers of the magazine. We hope that you enjoy this look back over the amazing history of the company. In subsequent issues, we will hear from our current publisher, as well as highlight what OCP has contributed to the Church over the last 100 years in a history article slated for the last issue of the year.

Jaime Cortez, a talented and popular OCP composer, arranger, and performer, born in New York and raised in El Salvador, wrote for this issue an interesting article that closes the series “How to educate our children in the faith.” His expe-rience on this topic is enriching, as Jaime is fluent in Spanish and has dedicated a large part of his ministry to promoting the Hispanic liturgy and integrating different cultures during the celebration of Mass.

Yo fui el editor de OCP desde 1992 hasta 2017. En esos 25 años, vi un gran crecimiento en OCP, así como una gran can-tidad de cambios en nuestra industria y en la Iglesia católica de los Estados Unidos. Me gustaría decir desde el principio, que no me atribuyo el mérito de los éxitos logrados por OCP durante ese tiempo; más bien, el mérito recae principalmente en la dedicación de los empleados de OCP y en el gran talento de los compositores, cuya música tuvimos el privilegio de publicar. Nada de esto habría sido posible sino fuera por ellos.

Cuando tomé el timón como editor en 1992, todavía publi-cábamos en “papel y plástico”. Los misales, los himnarios y las partituras sólo estaban disponibles en formato impreso, las grabaciones sólo estaban disponibles en CD y casetes. Todos nuestros materiales promocionales también eran impresos. No fue hasta el año 1995 cuando lanzamos nuestra primera página web, ocp.org. Nuestro primer producto digital, Liturgy.com, no apareció hasta varios años después.

Sin embargo, el proceso para crear productos estaba cam-biando de la producción manual a la producción electrónica. La máquina de escribir para crear partituras fue reemplazada por la computadora. I served as OCP’s Publisher from 1992 to 2017. Those 25 years witnessed a great deal of growth at OCP, as well as a great deal of change in our industry and in the U.S. Catholic Church. I’d like to state at the outset that I do not take credit for OCP’s successes during that time; rather, credit lies pri-marily with OCP’s dedicated employees and the talented composers whose music we were privileged to publish. None of this would have been possible were it not for them.

When I took over the helm as Publisher in 1992, we were still publishing on “paper and plastic.” Missals, hymnals, and sheet music were only available as print media; recordings were only available as CDs and cassettes. All of our promo-tional materials were also printed. It was not until 1995 that we launched our first website, ocp.org. Our first digital product, liturgy.com, did not appear until several years later.

The process of creating products was, however, transition-ing at the time from manual to electronic production. Music engravings were no longer created on a “music typewriter,” but were instead computer generated. The same with texts. Graphics and photography were also going digital. But the printing process was still mainly a manual operation: galleys were stripped and pasted by hand, plates were burned, and products were printed on huge presses in quantities number-ing in the hundreds to millions.

By 2017, this entire process had become digitized. All the work was now done on computers, often beginning on the composer’s computer, then being massaged on editors’ com-puters, and finally being sent via the internet to a printing press – often located several thousand miles away. The majority of our products were still being published on paper and plastic, but customers could also purchase digital copies – be that a PDF of a choral octavo or an MP3 recording of a single song. Sales of physical products began to decline as sales of digital products grew.

We were also beginning to experiment with digital wor-ship aids. This began with the creation of digital versions of our accompaniment books and recordings libraries. Now,

de una sola canción. Las ventas de productos físicos empezaron a disminuir a medida que crecían las de los productos digitales.

También empezamos a experimentar con recursos en formato digital. Esto comenzó con la creación de versiones digitales de nuestros libros de acompañamiento y bibliotecas de grabacio-nes. Es decir que en lugar de comprar voluminosas carpetas de partituras o docenas de grabaciones en CD, los clientes podían descargar las versiones digitales directamente en su ordenador o tableta. (En 2020, los hispanos representaban el 40% de todos los católicos de EE.UU.) Otras etnias también eran cada vez más frecuentes, especialmente los católicos vietna-mitas y filipinos. Todos estos grupos aportaron a la Iglesia no sólo sus idiomas, sino también sus costumbres y tradiciones religiosas. Además, los adultos jóvenes—incluyendo a la generación X y los millennials—estaban llegando a la mayoría de edad y aportando su propio estilo de música a la Iglesia. Las composiciones de los “Baby Boomers” de los años 70s y 80s se complementaban con canciones de compositores más jóvenes fuertemente influencia-dos por la música cristiana contemporánea.

OCP trató de responder a las necesidades de una Iglesia cada vez más diversa. Para los católicos hispanos, esto incluyó el muy popular himnario Flor y Canto de OCP (ahora en su tercera edición), así como el innovador misal bilingüe Unidos en Cristo/United in Christ. It would only be a matter of time before we could also provide worship aids directly to parishioners’ smart phones. [That did, in fact, just occur in February of this year, with the release of OCP’s Breaking Bread eMissal.]

During this same period, dramatic changes were also occurring in the Catholic Church in the United States. The Church was becoming more multilingual and multicultural. In particular, the number of Hispanic Catholics had greatly increased. (As of 2020, Hispanics accounted for 40% of all U.S. Catholics.) Other ethnicities were also becoming more prevalent, especially Vietnamese and Filipino Catholics. All these groups brought not only their languages to the Church, but also their unique religious customs and traditions. In addi-tion, young adults – including Gen Xers and Millennials – were coming of age and contributing their own style of music to the Church. The Baby Boomer compositions of the 1970s and 80s were being supplemented with songs from younger com-posers heavily influenced by contemporary Christian music.

OCP sought to respond to the needs of the increasingly diverse Church. For Hispanic Catholics, this included OCP’s very popular Flor y Canto hymnal (now in its third edition), as well as the groundbreaking bilingual missal Unidos en Cristo/United in Christ. In 2001, OCP reached out to the most respected Vietnamese composers, both in Vietnam and in the United States, identifying the Vietnamese community’s most-loved hymns, songs and service music, and eventu-ally publishing them in our Thánh Ca Dân Chúa hymnal. For Gen Xers and Millennials (and all the young at heart), OCP published the Spirit & Song hymnal and, more recently, the Choose Christ annual missal. All the while, we continued to publish our flagship worship aids, Breaking Bread and Today’s Missal, along with our very successful Journeysongs and Glory & Praise hymnals.

As I stated earlier, none of this could have happened were it not for OCP’s dedicated employees and the talented com-posers whose music we were privileged to publish. I was for-tunate to work with some of the best people in the industry – both during my time as Publisher, as well as during the 1980s when I first came to OCP. What marked all these individuals, be they staff or composers, was not just their immense tal-ent, but also their dedication to serving the people of God. I’m humbled by the many hundreds of individuals with whom I had the honor of working during my tenure at OCP. They are too numerous to name, and I hesitate to call out even a few, because once started, I wouldn’t know where to stop.

I actually got my start in music ministry in the 1970s in Louisville, Kentucky. I eventually ended up working in the

Recuerdo que en aquel momento, pensé: “¿No sería maravi-lloso que un día pudiera trabajar en OCP?” Nunca imaginé que un día, me ofrecerían un trabajo allí, y, aún más inimaginable, que un día sería el editor de OCP. Fue, sin duda, el mayor honor de mi vida poder servir como editor durante 25 años. Esos 25 años pasaron en un instante. Es verdad, el tiempo vuela cuando uno se divierte.

A pesar de todos los cambios que han ocurrido desde 1992, ya sea en OCP, en la industria o en la Iglesia católica de los Estados Unidos, el mismo espíritu de ministerio y servicio sigue caracterizando a OCP hoy en día. La Iglesia sigue creciendo y desarrollándo en los Estados Unidos, y OCP está aquí para servir a la Iglesia, a toda la Iglesia. Office of Worship for the Archdiocese of Louisville as a par-

ish liturgy and music consultant. It was during this time that I

first became aware of OCP. I had been researching available

worship aids, and I’d become quite impressed with OCP’s

Today’s Missal and annual Music Issue. (This was before the

advent of Breaking Bread.) The Music Issue combined the

very best of traditional and contemporary repertoire in one

small volume that was updated annually. Parishes would often

contact me and ask me to recommend a worship aid. I told

them, “For the money, I think the best one comes from OCP.”

I began requesting sample copies from OCP that I could

supply to the parishes. Every couple of months, I’d put a call

in to OCP, and a few days later a dozen or so sample packets

would arrive in the mail. With time, I became impressed with

OCP’s generous spirit of customer service, and I soon found

myself wanting to learn more about this Catholic publisher

out on the West Coast. I was particularly intrigued by the fact

that OCP was a not-for-profit organization. (For those who

don’t know, a not-for-profit organization has no owner, only

employees; and, if its income in any given year exceeds its

expenses, the net proceeds must be reinvested in furthering

the company’s mission.)

I remember thinking at the time, wouldn’t it be wonderful if

one day I could work at OCP. I never imagined that one day I

would indeed be offered a job there, and even more unimagi-

nable, that one day I would be OCP’s Publisher. It was without

a doubt the greatest honor of my life being able to serve as

Publisher for 25 years. Those 25 years went by in a flash. It’s

really true—time does fly when you’re having fun.

For all the changes that have occurred since 1992—be

that at OCP, in the industry, or in the U.S. Catholic Church—

that same ethos of ministry and service continues to charac-

terize OCP today. The Church continues to grow and evolve

in the United States, and OCP is here to serve the Church

– the entire Church. Whether it’s chant, traditional hymnody,

contemporary music, music for children and young adults, or

music for the multicultural community, OCP has something for

everyone. We’ve been doing this for the past century. God

willing, we’ll still be doing it 100 years from now. Deo gratias!

Cuando mi novia Kari, y yo decidimos casarnos, sabíamos muy bien que era importante para ambos mantenernos activos en nuestra fe católica. Los dos tuvimos una niñez que incluía alguna experiencia de iglesia, y también teníamos la suerte de haber tenido destreza musical desde nuestra adolescencia. Tanto ella, como yo, crecimos aprendiendo acerca de nuestra fe y recibimos nuestros sacramentos cuando éramos pequeños. Los dos asistimos a retiros y participamos en la Misa cada semana. Sin embargo, lo que nos mantuvo siempre participando en la iglesia fue nuestra habilidad músical y el deseo de servir a nuestras respectivas comunidades, a través del ministerio de la música.

No quiero decir con esto, que uno debe ser músico para poder ser consistente con su fe, pero sí quiere decir que uno debe encon-trar un lugar, un papel para desempeñar en su parroquia. Uno debe encontrar algo que sienta que es su contribución y que le ayuda a reconocer que uno es parte de algo más grande, lo que a la vez, está haciendo algo significativo para nuestro mundo.

Nuestra boda y los nacimientos de nuestros hijos fueron acon-tecimientos que dieron mucha alegría a toda nuestra comunidad, simplemente porque nosotros sentíamos que éramos parte de algo más grande que no éramos sólo nosotros, y nuestra comunidad nos apoyaba y nos cuidaba. Entonces, era natural que nuestra familia creciera involucrada en la Iglesia, porque era algo que nosotros hacía-mos cada semana. Contribuíamos como algo natural y con alegría.

Hay mucha gente que me ha pedido que comparta el secreto para que nuestros hijos se mantengan involucrados en la Iglesia, y, honestamente, no ha sido sencillo encontrar una sola respuesta. La respuesta incluye una historia compleja de quiénes somos como indi-viduos, como pareja, como padres de familia, como católicos y como miembros de toda nuestra familia. Voy a hacer énfasis en una cosa que recuerdo de toda mi vida: mis padres me permitieron siempre tener una voz. Mi opinión contaba desde muy temprana edad. When my girlfriend, Kari, and I decided to marry, we already knew it was important for both of us to remain active in our Catholic faith. We both had childhoods that included some experience of church, and we both had the luck of having musical ability from our early teens. We likewise grew up learn-ing about our faith, and we received the sacraments in our early years. We both attended retreats and attended weekly Masses. However, what kept us involved in the Church was our ability to play music and serve our respective communities through music ministry.

This is not to say that in order to become more consistent in your faith you must become a musician, but it does mean that you must find a role in your parish. You must find some-thing that you feel is your contribution, and that helps you recognize that you are a part of something bigger which is accomplishing something significant in our world.

Our wedding and the birth of our children were events that were dear to our whole community, simply because we felt we were a part of something bigger. Our community supported us and kept an eye on us. It was natural for our family to grow involved in the Church, because it was a part of what we always did every week. We contributed with ease and with gladness.

So many people have asked me to share with them the secret to keeping our children involved in the Church, and honestly, it hasn’t been easy to give a simple answer. The answer involves a complex history of who we are as individuals, as a couple, as parents, as Catholics and as members of our extended family. I will focus on one thing that I always remember: my parents allowed me to have a voice. My opinion counted from very early in my life. This small detail gave me the desire to allow my chil-dren to have their own voices. More on this later.

Recently, I interviewed several couples on the subject of having their children be involved in the life of the Church. I discovered some similarities, yet some radical differences in

educar a sus hijos, con base en su propia experiencia, lo mismo pasa cuando los padres escogen una forma de mantener a sus hijos en la fe católica. Hablé con padres de familia que no dan opciones a sus hijos: no hay negociación. Esto es lo que ellos hacen, y los hijos deben aceptar esta actividad y, les guste o no, deben asistir a la misma. Hablé también con padres de familia en situaciones en las que el padre no está muy dispuesto a ir a la iglesia, porque es día de fútbol y la iglesia interfiere con la hora del juego. Hablé con otros padres de familia, que negociaban con sus hijos y les ofrecían recompensa con alguna cosa específica, con tal de convencerlos de asistir a la iglesia.

Aquí nadie tiene la respuesta correcta. Cada familia es diferente. Cada individuo es diferente, y los desafíos que enfrenta cada fami-lia, son también diferentes dependiendo de la dinámica que se vive en cada hogar.

Una cosa que he notado en las familias que asisten juntas a la iglesia sin ningún problema es la participación de esa familia en un ministerio, todos juntos, como unidad. Hay familias que sirven como acomodadores. Hay familias que enseñan catecismo juntos, y hay familias que sirven en un ministerio litúrgico.

Al hablar con otros padres de familia, encontré que tener un sentido de pertenencia es el aspecto más importante para tener éxito en hacer que toda la familia participe en la Iglesia, y, al hacerlo, se eduquen en la fe.

El aspecto único más importante de ir a la iglesia es sentir que uno es parte del grupo y que está contribuyendo con algo para que el Evangelio de Jesucristo, se conozca no solamente en esa iglesia, sino en el mundo que nos rodea.

Los miembros de mi familia han sido afortunados de poder ser-vir juntos en el ministerio de la música. Mientras crecían nuestros tres bebés y se convertían en jóvenes, siempre les permitimos sen-tarse junto a nosotros y participar en el ministerio de la música, ya fuera cantando o tocando algún instrumento sencillo. Comenzaban con una maraca y luego pasaban a las congas, para luego tocar guitarras, bajo, batería o piano. A medida que fueron mejorando en la ejecución de los instrumentos, lo cual lograron tomando clases privadas, los animábamos a tomar parte en el ministerio de música de nuestra parroquia. Como empezaron tan jóvenes, ya para cuan-do estuvieron en la preparatoria dominaban bien los instrumentos, y era lo más natural para ellos participar en la música. their methods. Just as there are many different ways which parents choose to raise their children, based on their own experiences, the same happens when parents choose a way to keep their children in the Catholic faith.

I spoke to parents who do not give their children a choice; there is no negotiation. This is what they do, and the children will conform to this activity and, whether they like it or not, they must attend. I also spoke to parents where the father was not as keen to go to church because it was football day, and church got in the way of the games. I spoke to parents who negotiated with their children and would bargain with them by rewarding them with specific things in order to convince them to go to church.

Nobody has the right answer here; every family is different, every individual is different, and there are different challenges in each family depending on the dynamics that occur in each home. One thing that I did notice in the families who attended church together with ease was the involvement of that family together in a ministry. There are families who usher together, there are families who teach catechism together, and there are families who do a liturgical ministry together.

In talking with other parents, the most important aspect of being successful at having the entire family participate in church, and by doing so, to become educated in the faith, was to have a sense of belonging—to feel that you were a part of the group and that you were contributing to something that allowed the Gospel of Jesus Christ to become known, both within that church and in the world around us.

My family had the good fortune of doing music ministry together. As our three babies became young boys, they were allowed to sit next to us and participate in the music ministry by either singing or playing a simple instrument. They would begin with a shaker, and then move to a conga drum, and later play guitars, bass guitar, drums, or piano. As they became better at learning instruments, which we fostered by signing them up for private lessons, we encouraged them to take part in the music ministry of our parish. Since they started so young, they became very proficient by the time they were in high school, and it always seemed natural for them to participate. We have done music ministry all their lives. Even today we continue to serve the Church as musicians, although not always together, since they are in their 20s and have their own lives.

Another aspect that I believe is important is for someone in the family to keep the interest in the liturgical process alive within the family. Somebody has to prepare a little extra to understand the liturgical year, the basic structure of the Mass, the feast days, the way that scriptures are placed in the Mass. Someone has to lead the conversations after the Mass is fin-ished, and we all go out for a meal and discuss the scriptures, the preaching, and the music of the day.




My family has done this for many years. We shared a meal on Sunday, and we discussed what went on at Mass that day. As I mentioned before, it has been very important to allow our children to have their own voice. So, when we had these dis-cussions, everyone was allowed to share their thoughts, and nobody was criticized for their opinion. Each of our children took a different thing from each Mass, and it was so interest-ing to hear the experience of each child.

Our children are grown young adults now, and when asked what kept them in the faith, they boiled it down to three things:

They wanted to have a sense of belonging. They wanted to be a part of a team, and to have relationships with other people in that church. This was common to other children in families that I interviewed.

They wanted to hear good preaching. They wanted to hear how the Word of God would be applied to their own lives and to the lives of their family and their community. They also wanted to hear words that would apply to their age group.

They wanted the celebration, the preaching, and the min-istries to be genuine. It was a lot more difficult to want to be present in the church when there was insincerity in the words of the adults around them. Young people are very good at spotting fake ministry, and they always felt disappointment when something didn’t seem genuine.

When your children are infants, you dream that everything will be perfect, and that each child will love coming to church with you, and become part of a ministry that will keep them involved. However, as they grow up, you realize that they will need a lot of catechism, a lot of guidance, and a lot of exam-ples from your own lives. The commitment is quite big. Each parent must be faithful in their own way— to attend Mass, to set expectations with the children, and to help their children understand the experience (mystagogy) after the fact. This will allow each child to become more aware of what goes on in the liturgy, its connection to the life of the Church, and how it applies to other parts of their lives, including school and work. Every day, we as parents have had to say “yes” to this part of our own ministry and keep our children connected to the life of the Church. This way, they will become the next disciples and they will in turn pass on that faith to their own children.


Jaime Cortez is a talented and popular composer, arranger and performer. Born in New York and raised in El Salvador, Jaime has dedicated a portion of his ministry to promoting better Hispanic liturgies and bringing cultures together for worship. His main instrument is guitar, though he is proficient in piano and other string instruments, such as charango, vihuela, and bass guitar. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music composition from Arizona State University. He was named Pastoral Musician of the Year in 2016 by the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM).

Mi familia ha hecho esto por muchos años. Vamos a comer juntos el domingo y discutimos que fue lo que pasó en la Misa ese día. Como he dicho antes, ha sido muy importante permitir que nuestros hijos tengan sus propias voces. Así, cuando tenemos estas discusiones, todos pueden compartir sus pensamientos y a nadie se le critica por su opinión. Cada uno de nuestros hijos saca algo diferente de cada Misa; y es muy interesante oír cómo cada uno expresa su experiencia.

Ya nuestros hijos son adultos jóvenes hoy día, y cuando les pre-gunto qué los ha mantenido en la fe, lo resumen en estos tres aspectos:

Querían sentir que pertenecían a algo. Querían ser parte de un equipo y poder relacionarse con otras personas en esa Iglesia. Este también era el caso con otros niños de familias que entrevisté.

Querían escuchar buenos sermones. Ellos querían oír cómo apli-car la Palabra de Dios en sus propias vidas y en la vida de su familia y comunidad. También querían escuchar palabras que se pudieran aplicar al grupo de edad al que pertenecen.

Querían que la celebración, la homilía y los ministerios fueran genuinos. Era bastante difícil querer estar presente en la Iglesia, cuando no había sinceridad en las palabras de los adultos que los rodeaban. Los jóvenes son muy eficientes en identificar falsos ministerios y siempre se sienten decepcionados cuando algo no les parece genuino.

Cuando los hijos son infantes, uno sueña con que todo será perfecto, y que cada uno de ellos va a estar feliz de ir a la iglesia, y van a ser parte de un ministerio que los va a mantener involucrados. No obstante, a medida que crecen, uno se da cuenta de que van a necesitar del catecismo, guía y una gran cantidad de estímulos, como el buen ejemplo proveniente de la vida de sus padres. El compromiso es enorme. Cada padre de familia con sus propias cua-lidades debe ser fiel en cuanto a asistir a Misa, al crear las expec-tativas en sus hijos en el sentido de enseñarles cómo ser un buen católico, y analizar la experiencia de la Misa con sus hijos después del hecho (mistagogía). La Iglesia ofrece muchas oportunidades para fortalecer la vida litúrgica de la parroquia durante todo el año. Las celebra-ciones interculturales que se observan desde el Miércoles de Ceniza hasta la solemnidad de Pentecostés son buena ocasión para dejarnos transformar por los dones que conforman la comunidad católica.

Generalmente, la liturgia del Miércoles de Ceniza es muy concurrida, por lo que la pastoral determina el tipo de liturgia que se necesita. Por ejemplo, en una liturgia por la noche, es más fácil que se reúnan familias enteras de feligreses hispanos, filipinos y vietnamitas. Throughout the year, the Church provides many opportuni-ties for strengthening the liturgical life of a parish. The inter-cultural celebrations observed from Ash Wednesday through Pentecost are great times to let ourselves be transformed by the gifts that make up each and every Catholic community.

The Ash Wednesday liturgy is usually very well attended. As a result, pastoral considerations determine the type of celebration that is needed. Consider that an evening liturgy is more easily accessible for Hispanic, Filipino, and Vietnamese parishioners, for example. Likewise, liturgies celebrated in a group’s native language allow the music, the homily, and the symbols of the season to prepare everyone to enter into the spirit of Lent.

During Lent, parishioners could gather weekly in small groups to read and share the Scriptures for the upcoming Sunday. They could hold these groups in their native lan-guage. Some parishes also offer a parish mission or gather-ings to talk about Lenten topics. These get togethers could be held in the dominant language of the community or, if it’s pos-sible and there’s enough room for separate gatherings, vari-ous language groups could meet on the same night. Penance services may also be planned that include hymns and prayers in several languages. Confessors should be available to assist the speakers of all those languages.

Often it’s easy to celebrate the diversity in a parish through something as simple as hosting a dinner of soup, fried fish, or tacos. Gatherings like these give people the chance to get involved in their parish and also share a meal together. Another fun alternative for the entire family and for parishio-ners who speak different languages is the Ukrainian tradition of decorating eggs. These eggs, called pysanky, focus on the Christian symbolism of Easter. Classes could be offered during Lent. The creations could then be part of any parish celebration of the season.

Another good time to encourage inclusion at worship is during Lent and Triduum pilgrimages and processions. A pil-

After Holy Thursday Mass at one Polish parish I know, cler-gy, representatives of par-ish organizations, and chil-dren carrying lilies process to the repository where the Blessed Sacrament is kept. People pray there and then visit other area churches. The liturgy on Good Friday includes a procession of the faithful, and each person devot-edly venerates the cross.

“Las Tres Caídas” (The Three Times Jesus Falls) and the “Pésame”

(Condolences to Mary) are part of the Good Friday obser-vance in many Latin American communities. Incorporating these into any parish community with a large Hispanic popu-lation is a good idea. The devotion of “Las Siete Palabras de Jesús en la Cruz” (The Seven Last Words of Jesus on the Cross) is another devotion practiced by Latin Americans and others as a way to spend time with the suffering Lord.

The prayer service and preaching may be led by represen-tatives of various cultural groups. In some Polish churches, for example, the leaders of the parish organizations share reflec-tions on the five wounds of Christ in front of a tomb containing a statue of Jesus.

After the Good Friday liturgy, Latin American and Filipino communities participate in the “Procesión del Santo Entierro” (Procession of the Holy Burial) at night. A glass casket encas-ing a reclining statue of Christ is carried through the streets and displayed in the church, where it is venerated as an expression of respect for the body of Christ before burial. The Pasyón tradition, which calls for the chanting of the Passion, is a vow (panatà) made by an individual or family; often the vow is passed on from generation to generation.

be eaten by families during the Easter meal are blessed on the Saturday of the Triduum. This tradition, known as the Blessing of the Easter Basket, could easily be expanded to include all the faithful in a parish community. Afterward, families can pray in the church, where Christ’s body remains. Some families have the custom of signing up to spend an hour with Jesus (a statue of his body lies on a slab in the church) sometime between the hours of 7 am and 7 pm.

At the Easter Vigil, new members are baptized, confirmed, or received into the Church, so this is a wonderful time to bring together a parish’s many cultures. This celebration, rich with the images of water and light, may not be well attended by members of some communities since it is not always a part of their tradition. Be sure to encourage everyone to attend this beautiful and important celebration.

On Easter Sunday, the pre-dawn Easter Mass at some Polish and Lithuanian parishes includes a procession with the Blessed Sacrament and a statue of the risen Christ (this procession is called the rezurekcja) followed by prayer at

the empty tomb. The “Gran Encuentro” (Grand Encounter) is observed in many Latin American communities. In this tradi-tion, women carry a statue of the Blessed Mother while men carry a statue of Jesus. Both groups meet near the church where the people genuflect. Then they lower Mary’s statue and stop to reflect on the first time she met the risen Jesus. Singing and praying, they all process into the church building together and begin the Easter liturgy. The Filipino celebration of salubong often starts at dawn in a similar way.

This season provides wonderful opportunities to worship our Lord united as one single community. Pentecost is an espe-cially appropriate time to welcome all as the people of God. Consider having an entrance procession with representatives from different cultures in their native dress, or try having one of the readings proclaimed in a language other than the dominant language. For example, you could print the intercessions in English but read them in other languages. Offer a variety of lan-guages and styles in the music used at worship as well. Invite parishioners from several cultural groups to be greeters. And, when the Mass is over, celebrate the gifts of the community with a welcoming celebration featuring food from several coun-tries and cultures. Invite all to share in the banquet.

It is truly marvelous to have a community that is united and active. Consider the following suggestions to help you get better results during the celebrations of this season.

• Plan together. When representatives of all parish groups are invited to plan liturgies, the result will often be celebra-tions that are more beautiful, meaningful, and organized. Since music is key, encourage the leaders of all the different language choirs to get to know each other and to offer sug-gestions on the musical selections. If there is only one parish choir, look for and empower singers and musicians of all the language groups so they can participate in the music min-istry for these days and possibly into the future. This could even lead to the formation of a permanent parish committee or multicultural choir that could serve the community.

• Communicate. An invitation in a bulletin or via a pulpit announcement is usually a good way to start commu-nicating, but it’s rarely enough. Parishioners may read or hear an announcement but, unless they’re given the message in a way that helps them feel truly invited, they might assume the message isn’t really intended for them. Leaders and the people in the pews need constant sup-port to understand the true meaning of being Catholic and receiving a newcomer as a brother or sister.

• Invite. The importance of a personal approach when inviting others cannot be underestimated. For example, it works well to have someone at the church door after Mass handing out bulletins and inviting people to another liturgy. Those who attend Mass daily may also take the time to personally invite others to accompany them to a liturgy.

• Welcome. A warm welcome to those attending an intercultural liturgy is very important. Cardinal Donald Wuerl started a wonderful practice on Good Friday when he was the archbishop of Washington, DC. He would stand at the entrance of Saint Matthew Cathedral and personally welcome the members of the Hispanic community arriving for Mass. At this point, they would have just prayed the Via Crucis through the streets of the city and were entering the cathedral to celebrate the liturgy in Spanish. Naturally, the people felt his welcome to the mother church of the archdiocese in a big way. Consider doing something similar at your parish.

• Call forth gifts. The liturgical celebrations during the Triduum should include ministers of many cultures. Musicians in particular may be invited to share their gifts by increasing their repertoire for service at the celebra-tions. Ask them to share their gifts and help them learn songs in various languages as well as songs that are sensitive to the needs of different cultures.

• Respect. Some songs or customs may be new to members of a parish community, even to those mem-

bers who speak the dominant language of the group. The gifts of each person and culture must, therefore, be respected and understood. Customs and traditions can easily be explained in a worship aid or the pastor can share a brief explanation out loud before the celebration.

• Thank. Intercultural celebrations are true moments of prayer. Show gratitude toward those who share their time and talents for the benefit of the entire parish com-munity. Thank people often and sincerely.

In some immigrant communities, daily life is a constant struggle in a foreign land. The suffering of Jesus closely resembles the current situation for many of these people, though they may not realize it. Making a significant effort to help all in a parish come to know God is possibly the most important work we can ever try to do. Slowly but surely, we can all come to realize more fully that we are many individuals but only one body of Christ.

El bautismo es el primero de los sacramen-tos y, con la confirmación y la Eucaristía, conforma los sacramentos de iniciación cristiana.

El Significado de “Bautismo”

La palabra “bautismo” proviene de la palabra latina baptismum que significa: hundir en el agua, zambullir o sumergir. Su significado corresponde a una de las maneras en que se puede realizar el sacramento del Bautismo: por infusión (cuando se derrama un poco de agua sobre la cabeza de la persona) o bien, por inmersión, cuando todo el cuerpo de la persona que se está bautizando se sumerge en el agua. Para el que ha conocido a Cristo, el Bautismo es necesario para la salvación y el cimiento sobre el cual se reciben los otros seis sacramentos.

Una Antigua TradiciónEn el Nuevo Testamento, aparece Juan el Bautista procla-

mando un Bautismo de conversión, advirtiendo que después de él vendrá alguien que bautizará con el fuego y el Espíritu Santo. Mientras que el bautismo de Juan invitaba a la conversión, al arrepentimiento y a la preparación para la venida del Mesías, el Bautismo de Cristo trae la plenitud de la gracia. Es la nueva vida que se comunica por medio del agua y del Espíritu y así se renace a la vida eterna.

Antes de su ascensión al cielo, Jesús deja el mandato univer-sal a sus apóstoles de ir por todo el mundo y hacer que “todos los pueblos sean mis discípulos. Bautícenlos en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo” (Mateo 28, 19–20).

The Meaning of “Baptism”

The word “baptism” comes from the Latin baptismum, which mean to dip, plunge, or submerge in water. Its meaning points to the two ways in which the sacrament of Baptism can take place: either through immersion, when a small amount of water is poured on the head of the person being baptized, or through full immersion, when the entire body of the individual being baptized is submerged in water. For those who know Christ, Baptism is necessary for salvation and is the foundation needed for receiving any of the remaining six sacraments.

An Ancient TraditionIn the New Testament, John the Baptist is shown to us

proclaiming a baptism of conversion and warning that another will come after him who will baptize with fire and the Holy Spirit. While John’s baptism invited people to convert, repent, and prepare for the coming of the Messiah, Baptism in Christ brings the fullness of grace. We are given new life through water and the Holy Spirit, and that is how we are born again in eternal life.

Before his ascension into heaven, Jesus left his apostles with the universal mandate to go through the world and “make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19).

Water continues to be the primary element through which we celebrate the sacrament of Baptism today. Water evokes life, liberty, and purification. References to life are found in Genesis when God’s spirit is above the waters, and water saves Noah

agua salva a Noé y su familia, mientras que por la misma otros perecen. Cuando Israel es liberado de la esclavitud en Egipto, la liberación se realiza con el cruce del Mar Rojo, que para unos fue libertad y para otros muerte. Así pues el agua es el símbolo de vida en el Espíritu.

La vestidura blanca que se coloca sobre los que han recibido el sacramento del Bautismo representa la gracia que reciben mediante la celebración de este sacramento, pues “se han reves-tido de Cristo” (Gálatas 3, 27). Del mismo modo, cuando la persona es adulta se le entrega una vela encendida en el cirio pascual, que simboliza la fe de la Iglesia y el compromiso de ser “luz del mundo” (Mateo 5, 14). La señal de la luz destaca entre las más antiguas de la Iglesia católica, pues siempre ha identificado a Jesucristo como luz del mundo.

La Iglesia naciente comenzó a bautizar personas “En el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo”, que es la fórmula canónica mediante la cual una persona queda bautizada en el momento en que se derrama el agua sobre su cabeza o se sumerge en la pila bautismal. Esta celebración exterior de unión a la Iglesia se realizó también con familias enteras (Hechos 16, 29–34). Para los nuevos cristianos, el Bautismo implicaba la separación entre lo viejo y lo nuevo, entre la muerte y la vida. Esta celebración era, como ahora, una muerte con Cristo para resucitar con Cristo.

La Nueva Vida en CristoEste mismo Bautismo “constituye el nacimiento a la vida

nueva en Cristo” (El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica 1277) tanto en adultos como en niños. Sus frutos son el perdón del pecado original y de todos los pecados personales (en el caso de los adultos). Así pues, además de ser incorporados al Cuerpo místico, en virtud de este sacramento, participamos del sacer-docio de Cristo.

Una vez que se recibe este sacramento, deja en nosotros un sello indeleble que nada ni nadie puede quitar, ni aun el pecado más grave que podamos cometer. Para designar esta realidad, la Iglesia afirma que tanto el Bautismo como la Confirmación y el Orden Sacerdotal imprimen carácter, es decir, son imborrables por el resto de nuestra vida. Así pues, estos sacramentos sólo pueden recibirse una vez y permanecen para siempre.

and his family while others perish. When the people of Israel are liberated from slavery in Egypt, their freedom comes by cross-ing the Red Sea, which gives liberty to some and leads to death for others. In these ways, water is a symbol of life in the Spirit.

The white vestment placed on those who have received the sacrament of Baptism represents the grace they receive through the celebration of this sacrament, for “all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ” (Galatians 3:27). Similarly, when the person being baptized is an adult, he or she is given a candle lit from the flame of the paschal candle, which symbolizes the faith of the Church and the commitment to be “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). The symbol of light stands out among the most ancient sym-bols of the Catholic Church because Jesus Christ has always been identified as the light of the world.

The early Church began to baptize people “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” This is the canonical form with which a person is baptized at the moment when water is poured on his or her head or at the moment when the person is submerged in the baptismal font. This public celebration of union with the Church was also done with entire families (Acts 16:29–34). For new Christians, Baptism implied a separation between the old and the new, between death and life. This celebration was, much like today, a death with Christ in order to later rise with Christ.

New Life in ChristBaptism “is birth into the new life in Christ” (Catechism of

the Catholic Church 1277) for adults and children alike. Its fruits are forgiveness of original sin and of all personal sins (in the case of adults). Therefore, in addition to becoming part of the mystical Body through this sacrament, we also take part in the priesthood of Christ.

Once this sacrament has been received, it leaves in us an indelible mark that no person or thing can take away, not even the gravest sin we commit. To show this reality, the Church affirms that Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders influence character, that is, they cannot be erased for the rest of a per-son’s life. That is why these sacraments can only be received once and why they remain forever.

El Evangelio de este día nos invita a considerar los tres elementos esenciales de esta temporada que han de reflejar nuestra cercanía a Dios, cuya misericordia nos ha de transformar y cuyo perdón nos espera. La oración, el ayuno y la ofrenda son ingredientes de nuestra vida cotidiana que han de acentuarse más durante este tiempo. Se espera que la comisión parroquial de liturgia haya programado con el párroco la participación de la asamblea durante estos cuarenta días de conversión, que hoy las cenizas nos recuerdan. Los coordinadores de la Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos (RICA) han de preparar adecuadamente a los catecúmenos y candidatos a comprender el sentido de los escrutinios que los dirigen hacia su iniciación en la Pascua.

I Domingo de Cuaresma6 de marzo de 2022Este primer domingo de Cuaresma nos invita a confiar plena-mente en el Señor por encima de otras personas o cosas. Moisés invita al pueblo a ofrecerle a Dios los primeros frutos de la tierra, lo mejor de la cosecha, y a presentarse ante él para que Dios lo enriquezca y fortalezca. Para Pablo, en la segunda lec-tura, la fe nace de un corazón renovado y firme en Jesús, cuya muerte y resurrección nos ofrece la vida que anhelamos. En el Evangelio, Jesús experimenta las tentaciones del demonio y confía en la fuerza que viene del Padre, no en las ofrendas que hace el demonio para satisfacer la gloria, la fama o las necesi-dades del momento.

¿Cómo reaccionamos ante el mundo y ante la Iglesia cuando nuestras familias se encuentran al borde de la necesi-dad o al margen de la seguridad física o emocional? ¿A quién recurrimos? Los grupos comunitarios pueden ofrecer soluciones prácticas a quienes hagan esas preguntas en la vida cotidiana.

The Gospel invites us to consider the three basic elements of this Lenten season that reflect our close-ness to God, whose mercy never fails us and whose forgive-ness abounds. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving should always be part of our daily lives but are more accentuated during this season. The parish liturgical commission should have already planned, along with the pastor, for the assembly’s participation during these forty days of conversion, of which we are reminded by today’s ashes. Coordinators of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) should prepare the cat-echumens and candidates to properly understand the mean-ing of the scrutinies that lead to their initiation during Easter.

Moses invites his people to offer the Lord the first fruits of the earth, the best of the har-vest, and to present themselves before God so that he may enrich and strengthen them. For Paul, in the second reading, faith is born out of a renewed heart, a heart that is firm in the love of Jesus Christ, whose death and resurrection offers us the life we long for. In the Gospel, Jesus experiences the temptations of the devil but overcomes them by trusting more in God than in what the devil offers: fame, influence, power, and material goods.

How do we react when our families find themselves on the brink of financial or emotional insecurity? Whom or what do we rely on? Where do we turn? Community groups can offer practical recommendations to the many who ask these ques-tions in their daily lives.

II Domingo de Cuaresma13 de marzo de 2022A medida que transcurren las semanas de Cuaresma, Dios se va revelando en la Palabra para definir con más precisión su relación con nosotros. En el Evangelio de hoy, Dios revela la gloria prometida a los que son fieles a la Alianza. Jesús recuerda a los apóstoles que esta experiencia de la transfiguración no es un escape, sino una meta que anuncia la victoria sobre la muerte. La vida terrena es un camino de sufrimientos y de gloria, de rechazos e incomprensiones y de esperanzas y alegrías. La fe nos permite afrontar la vida con toda confianza, abrazándonos a aquel que nos conduce hacia la felicidad eterna.

Como punto de reflexión para los grupos comunitarios, conviene que tanto la homilía como las preces de este domingo incluyan elementos que contrasten los conceptos de “sacrificio” y “felicidad”, “angustia” y “esperanza” y “dolor” y “alegría” como parte de la experiencia continua de nuestros fieles.

San José, Esposo de la Bienaventurada Virgen María19 de marzo de 2022Para la Iglesia, la figura de san José evoca una serie de temas esenciales en el plan de salvación. Desde la perspectiva bíblica, José es el hombre justo y obediente que se destaca en el Antiguo Testamento. Desde el marco de la encarnación, José participa en el “sí” de la Virgen al aceptarla como Madre del Salvador y, después, al cuidar de él como su padre adoptivo. San José es para todos nosotros un símbolo de compromiso ministerial, una inspiración al servicio y a la entrega a Dios.

Conviene que este año se celebre la Oración de la Tarde (Vísperas) en la vigilia de esta solemnidad y que se comparta una buena reflexión sobre san José en la comunidad.

III Domingo de Cuaresma20 de marzo de 2022En las lecturas de hoy, Dios se revela a Moisés en la zarza ardiente. Este llamado de Dios ha de transformar por completo la vida de este hombre que desde ese momento ha de seguir las exigencias del Señor ante su pueblo escogido. Moisés, con la ayuda de Dios, libera al pueblo de la esclavitud y lo conduce a la libertad y, a pesar de muchas dificultades, es testigo de las veces que Dios perdona al pueblo y lo alimenta para que per-manezca fiel a la Alianza. En el Antiguo Testamento, nadie pudo ver a Dios. Jesús, en el Nuevo Testamento, es el rostro de Dios, que nos llama al arrepentimiento y nos ofrece continuamente la misericordia infinita del Padre.

Aunque hoy se pueden utilizar los textos del ciclo A para el primer escrutinio con los catecúmenos, este tema del llamado de Dios en nuestras vidas puede ser intercalado también en la celebración, para aquellos que caminan con paso firme hacia su iniciación en la Iglesia.

In today’s Gospel, God reveals the glory promised to those who are faithful to the Covenant. Jesus reminds his apostles that the transfiguration is not an escape from the real world but, rather, a goal that announces the victory of life over death. Life on earth is a journey of suffering and of joy, of rejection and of misunderstandings, of hope and of success. Faith allows us to confront life confidently and binds us to him who leads us to eternal happiness.

To offer a source of reflection for community groups, it would be useful for both the homily and the Prayer of the Faithful to include elements that contrast concepts such as “sacrifice” and “happiness,” “anguish” and “hope,” and “pain” and “joy,” which are all common in the daily lives of parishioners.

The image of Saint Joseph evokes for the Church a series of themes that are essential in the plan of salvation. From a biblical perspective, Joseph is the just and obedient man who stands out in the Old Testament. From the perspective of the incarna-tion, Joseph participates in Mary’s “yes” by accepting her as the Mother of our Savior and, later, by caring for him as his adopted father. Saint Joseph is a symbol of ministerial commitment for all of us, an inspiration of service and surrender to God’s will.

This year, take the time to celebrate Evening Prayer on the vigil of Saint Joseph and be sure to share a good reflection on Saint Joseph with the community.

This call from God completely transforms the life of this man, who, from this moment on, will follow God’s demands before the chosen people. With God’s help, Moses leads his people from slavery to freedom and, despite the many other difficulties he encounters, he is a witness to the times God forgives the people and nourishes them so they will remain faithful to the Covenant. In the Old Testament, no one ever saw God. In the New Testament, Jesus is the image of God, who calls us to conversion and continually offers us the infinite mercy of the Father.

Although Year A texts may be used today for the first scru-tiny with the catechumens, this theme of God’s call in our lives may also be used during the celebration as these men and women walk the steady path of conviction toward their Christian initiation in the Church.

Anunciación del Señor25 de marzo de 2022El 25 de marzo, la solemnidad litúrgica de hoy muestra dos aspectos significativos de nuestra fe: la encarnación de Nuestro Señor y la maternidad de la Virgen María. El relato tan conocido del Evangelio presenta el “sí” de María de Nazaret y su entrega incondicional a la voluntad de Dios. María es la Madre de la Iglesia que muestra el camino hacia Jesucristo. La carta a los Hebreos afirma que la redención tuvo lugar por el sacrificio de Cristo y no por ningún otro sacrificio. Por ello, esta gran solemnidad nos conduce a comprender nuestra propia entrega a la voluntad de Dios para participar en la misión redentora del Señor. Ante esta solemnidad y los textos bíblicos que la acom-pañan, los grupos comunitarios pudieran reflexionar sobre lo que significa aceptar y seguir la voluntad de Dios.

IV Domingo de Cuaresma27 de marzo de 2022Aunque los coordinadores del RICA utilicen hoy el ciclo A con el Evangelio del ciego a quien Jesús le devuelve la vista, el texto que nos presenta el ciclo C es uno de los más hermosos de la Cuaresma, la parábola del hijo pródigo. Todas las lecturas anuncian el tema de la reconciliación en Jesús. Para nuestras comunidades, este es un tema de suma importancia; nos hace reflexionar sobre los esfuerzos que hacemos para acoger a todos los que se acercan a nosotros y a los muchos que debemos bus-car para acercarlos al Señor.

¿Qué significa vivir reconciliados en Jesús y aceptarnos y perdonarnos a pesar de nuestras diferencias? ¿Qué prohíbe en nuestras vidas lograr esta reconciliación con aquellos que nos han ofendido o a quienes hemos ofendido?

V Domingo de Cuaresma3 de abril de 2022El agua viva que relata el profeta Isaías en la Primera Lectura se convierte para san Pablo en la figura de Cristo, cuya resurrec-ción es el tesoro más valioso que el mismo Pablo haya recibido. Es un tesoro transformado en la misericordia divina que cambió por completo la vida de la mujer adúltera, a quien Jesús perdonó en el Evangelio de hoy. Nos debemos preguntar de qué manera hemos practicado la misericordia de Dios no sólo durante la Cuaresma sino durante todo el año. No podemos igualar la misericordia a la limosna; son dos términos distintos. La misericordia nace primero del perdón de Dios, quien nos invita a extender su amor y su com-pasión a los demás. Invitamos de nuevo a que los grupos de la comunidad tomen este tema como punto de partida en sus reflexiones durante esta semana.

IV Domingo de Cuaresma6Today on March 25th, this liturgical solemnity presents two significant aspects of our faith: the incarnation of our Lord and the maternity of the Virgin Mary. The well-known narrative of the Gospel presents us with Mary’s unconditional “yes” and her unrelenting surrender to the will of God. Mary is the Mother of the Church who leads us on the path to Christ. The Letter to the Hebrews affirms that our redemption comes from Christ’s sacrifice and not from any other sacrifice. For this reason, this great solemnity leads us to understand our own call to surrender to the will of God so we can participate in the redemptive mission of our Lord. By exploring this solemnity and its scriptural texts, community groups can reflect on the significance of accepting and following God’s will.

III Domingo de Pascua10 de abril de 2016Although today many RCIA coordinators may be using the Gospel of the blind man who recovers his sight from Year A, the Gospel for Year C—the parable of the prodigal son—is one of the most beautiful readings for Lent. All the readings proclaim the theme of reconciliation in Jesus. For our com-munities, this is a very important theme; it makes us reflect on the efforts we make to welcome those who come to us and also the many we must seek out and bring closer to the Lord.

What does it mean to live reconciled in Jesus and to accept and forgive others, despite our differences? What are the obstacles we must overcome to reconcile with those who have offended us or whom we have offended?

The living waters that the prophet Isaiah speaks about in today’s First Reading become for Saint Paul the clear image of Christ himself, whose resurrection is the most valuable treasure he has ever received. This treasure is transformed into the divine mercy that completely changed the life of the adulterous woman who Jesus forgives in the story from today’s Gospel.

We should all ask ourselves in what ways we have prac-ticed God’s mercy toward others, not only during Lent but throughout the entire year. We cannot equate mercy to giv-ing alms; these are two different things. Mercy is born first out of God’s forgiveness, who invites us to share his love and compassion with others. We should invite community groups to take up this theme as a starting point for their weekly reflections.

primer Evangelio, antes de la bendición de los ramos, presenta un Jesús seguro de lo que va a hacer. El Evangelio del día nos presenta a un Jesús-Siervo que celebra la cena de Pascua, listo para entregar su vida por todos en el árbol de la cruz.

La procesión de los ramos en las iglesias nos recuerda el triunfo del Mesías que nos congrega para que no se nos olvide que el paso de su muerte a la nueva vida de la re-surrección será una realidad. La cena Pascual nos ayuda a abrir el corazón a la Eucaristía para que no se nos olvide que la gloria de su entrega se hizo por medio del sacrificio en el que todos participamos desde nuestro bautismo. Hoy nos comprometemos a caminar con Jesús durante toda la semana y apoyamos los esfuerzos que el comité de liturgia parroquial ya ha hecho en sus preparativos para la semana más impor-tante del año.

Jueves Santo14 de abril de 2022Hoy nos congrega la Iglesia como se congregó el pueblo de Israel para una cena especial antes de su paso de la esclavitud de Egipto hacia la libertad. Hoy nos congrega la Iglesia para conmemorar nuestro paso del pecado a la libertad en Jesucristo por su muerte en la Cruz. En esta cena pascual, nos unimos a celebrar la Eucaristía y a reconocer que Jesús nos llama a servir al prójimo.

Se recomienda que se celebre en comunidad la Oración de la Mañana, para que la asamblea desde temprano pueda prepararse ante un espacio sagrado que ha de culminar con la Eucaristía en la noche. En la Misa vespertina se pueden presentar los óleos consagrados en la Misa Crismal, y en las preces se deben incluir peticiones por aquellos enfermos e impedidos que no pueden unirse a la comunidad. En muchas áreas del país, esta es una celebración bilingüe o multilingüe por la asistencia de diversos grupos culturales que anhelan unirse y formar una sola comunidad.

Viernes Santo15 de abril de 2022Dividida en cuatro partes, la liturgia del día, que no es la santa Misa, atrae a muchos feligreses. Para los fieles, la Veneración de la Cruz parece ser la más significativa. Conviene que, tanto los que presiden como sus ministros asistentes, siguiendo las nor-mas establecidas, hagan lo posible para que la asamblea escuche bien de los mejores lectores, y se sienta atraída a la Liturgia de la Palabra, sobre todo a la proclamación de la Pasión según San Juan, a las Preces Universales y, por supuesto, a la distribución de la sagrada Comunión que ha quedado de la noche anterior.

El conjunto de estas cuatro secciones de una misma liturgia sirve para comprender el sacrificio del Señor en el madero de la cruz. La piedad popular, tan evidente en nuestras comunidades hispanas, añade la procesión del Encuentro con la Virgen antes o después de esta liturgia al igual que el Sermón de la Soledad o el pésame a la Virgen. The first Gospel, before the blessing of the palm branches, presents Jesus as someone who is sure of what he is going to do. The second Gospel presents Jesus as the Servant of God celebrating Passover and ready to surrender his life on the cross for the salvation of all.

The processions that may be held in churches today with palm branches may remind us of the glory of the Messiah, who gathers us so that we don’t forget that his journey from his death to a new life in the resurrection will be a reality. His paschal meal helps us open our heart to the Eucharist so that we don’t forget that the glory of his surrender was a sacrifice in which we all take part from the moment of our Baptism. Today we commit our-selves to walk with Jesus throughout the week and to support all the efforts that the local liturgical committee has put into preparing for this, the most important week of the year.

Jueves Santo24 de marzo de 2016The Church gathers us today much like the people of Israel gathered for a meal on the eve of their journey out of slavery in Egypt to freedom. The Church gathers us to commemorate our passage from sin to freedom in Jesus Christ, through his death on the Cross. At this paschal meal, we are one in the celebration of the Eucharist as we recognize that Jesus invites us to serve one another.

Celebrate Morning Prayer as a community so that from the start of the day the faithful can prepare their hearts to enter into a sacred space that will culminate at the evening Eucharist. At the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the oils consecrated at the Chrism Mass may be presented to the community and intentions for the sick and homebound may be introduced at the Prayer of the Faithful. In many parts of the country, this is a bilingual or multilingual celebration attended by members of various cultural groups who wish to be united as one community.

Viernes Santo25 de marzo de 2016Today’s liturgy, which is divided into four parts and does not include a Mass, attracts many faithful. For a lot of them, the Veneration of the Cross seems to be the most significant moment. Efforts should be made by presiders and assisting ministers alike to follow established norms and provide the best quality readers for the Liturgy of the Word, especially for the reading of Saint John’s Passion, for the Prayer of the Faithful, and, of course, during the distribution of the Eucharist that was reserved from the previous evening’s Mass.

The combination of these four sections of the same liturgy provides the opportunity for people to gain a deeper under-standing of the sacrifice of Christ. Popular piety, particularly among members of the Hispanic community, may add out-door processions with the images of Our Lord and Our Lady as they encounter one another on the way to Calvary or they

Tanto el que preside como los diáconos, músicos, lectores y ministros asistentes necesitan tener un ensayo antes de esta celebración. A la narración del Evangelio que describe la tumba vacía se le añaden otras imágenes importantes: el anuncio de María Magdalena a Simón y al otro discípulo y el impacto de la resurrección de Cristo en la vida apostólica. Los músicos deben considerar de antemano de qué manera van a cantar la secuencia, que resume los textos de hoy y despliega en sí misma una tradición única que no se debe perder. Conviene que los grupos de la comunidad reflexionen sobre la manera en que Cristo nos acoge, estemos donde estemos.

Vigilia Pascual26 de marzo de 2Undoubtedly, this is the most important liturgy of the Church in which all of its most important symbols come together: the light of the paschal candle, the Word, the baptismal water, the new members, the chrism for Confirmation, the profession of faith, the litany of saints, the appropriate songs that proclaim that Christ has risen and lives forever, and, of course, the Eucharist, a real and permanent presence, the nourishment and strength on our pilgrimage to eternal life.

The presider, deacons, musicians, readers, and assistant ministers should be sure to have a rehearsal before this cel-ebration. The readers should practice their readings, and a good rhythm should be kept between each reading, the sing-ing of the psalms, and the presider’s prayer. It is important that ushers take charge of lighting the candles during the Gloria, and it should be clear when they should extinguish them after the Exsultet. When and how to ring the bells during the Gloria should also be clear. The details of this celebration should come together to create an environment that fosters prayer in community before the paschal mystery being celebrated.

Today we celebrate the triumph of the Lord. In the Gospel nar-rative that describes the empty tomb, other important images appear: the announcement of Mary Magdalene to Simon Peter and the other disciple and the impact of Christ’s resur-rection on apostolic life. Musicians should think about how they will sing the sequence ahead of time since it summarizes today’s texts and is part of a unique tradition that shouldn’t be lost. It works well to prepare well in advance of today and to include the assembly, which longs to joyfully celebrate the Lord’s resurrection today.

III Domingo de Pascua1o de mayo de 2022En los textos de las sagradas Escrituras hoy se palpa la tensión producida por la respuesta que hicieron los apóstoles al llamado del Señor: por un lado, el testimonio de su resurrección los condujo a recibir castigos severos, y por el otro, la comunión de amor en el banquete eucarístico, les proveyó alimento y alegría continua. San Juan, en el Evangelio, nos presenta el diálogo hermoso entre Cristo y Pedro, en el cual Pedro confiesa que ciertamente ama al Señor, y durante el cual el Señor comprende que ese amor ha de crecer y madurar con el tiempo en la medida que Pedro llegue a pastorear a sus ovejas.

Estos textos llevan a reflexionar a muchos de los que este año se acercan a las órdenes sagradas y a sus comunidades: ¿Con qué anhelo reciben el mandato de ser misioneros en el mundo de hoy? ¿Con qué amor los reciben sus comunidades que han de convertirse en sus nuevas familias? Ese abrazo al sacrificio por el servicio al pueblo ha de convertirse en su mayor motivación.

IV Domingo de Pascua8 de mayo de 2022Hoy es el Domingo del Buen Pastor. Los textos presentan la insistencia de la predicación de los discípulos de Cristo en las figuras de Pablo y Bernabé. La predicación de la palabra fue el instrumento con el cual comenzaron a forjarse las primeras comunidades apostólicas. En la actualidad, amparados por la misericordia de Dios, seguimos orando por aquellos que dan la vida por Cristo en todas las naciones. El Buen Pastor impulsa la misión apostólica en el Santo Padre y sus pastores y acoge a los que han dado la vida por Jesús en nuestros tiempos. Conviene que los grupos comunitarios puedan identificar las áreas del mundo donde se han presentado persecuciones y muertes por la fe, cristiana o no cristiana, para que juntos ofrezcan una oración por esas víctimas y sus familias.

V Domingo de Pascua15 de mayo de 2022Para San Juan en el Apocalipsis, en Cristo hay un cielo nuevo y una tierra nueva. Cristo, por su muerte y resurrección, renueva todas las cosas, pero sobre todo, la humanidad completa con el mandamiento del amor. Desde sus primeras etapas, la comuni-dad cristiana predica este como el más importante de los man-damientos e invita a sus fieles a ponerlo en práctica por medio del servicio.

Sabemos que el uso de la palabra “amor” encierra de por sí diferentes sentidos en el griego del Nuevo Testamento. El “amor” al que nos invita san Juan es el amor incondicional de Cristo que se entregó por todos, perdonando a sus enemigos. Quizás no hemos llegado todavía a ese sentido profundo del “amor”. Convendría que los grupos comunitarios reflexionaran

La Anunciación del Señor4 de abril de 2016In today’s readings, the tension that comes from the apostles’ response to Christ’s call to follow him and shepherd his flock is palpable. On the one hand, the testimony of his resurrec-tion led them to severe punishment while, on the other hand, the communion of love they experienced at the eucharistic banquet gave them everlasting sustenance and joy. In today’s Gospel, Saint John presents us with the beautiful dialogue between Christ and Peter during which Peter affirms his love for the Lord and the Lord understands that this love will grow and mature over time as Peter shepherds his flock.

All these texts can help those who will be receiving holy orders this year reflect. They can also help their communi-ties. What motivates their desire to be missionaries in today’s world? How can the communities that will become their new families show their love for their new family member? Embracing sacrifice in order to serve others should become their primary source of motivation.

IV Domingo de Pascua17 de abril de 2016Today is Good Shepherd Sunday. The readings, through the persons of Paul and Barnabas, tell of the persistence of the apostles in their missionary activity. The preaching of the word was the instrument used to build up the early apostolic communities. In our time, protected by God’s infinite mercy, we continue to pray for those who give their life for Christ in all nations. The Good Shepherd drives the apostolic mission in the Holy Father and his pastors, and he gathers those who have given their life for Jesus in our time. It would be useful for community groups to identify the parts of the world where Christians and non-Christians alike have been persecuted or killed for their faith. Together, community group members can pray for these victims and their families.

V Domingo de Pascua24 de abril de 2016For Saint John, in the Book of Revelation, there are a new heaven and a new earth in Christ. Through his death and res-urrection, Christ renews all things, above all humanity, which he renews with his commandment of love. From its early stages, the Christian community preached this as the most important of all the commandments and invited followers to put it into practice through service to others.

We know that the use of the word “love” has different meanings in the Greek of the New Testament. The “love” Saint John invites us to share is the unconditional love of Christ, who surrendered himself for us, forgiving his enemies. Maybe we haven’t reached that profound level of “love” in our lives yet. For this reason, it would be good for community groups

VI Domingo de Pascua22 de mayo de 2022Los textos de hoy anticipan la Ascensión. Mientras que el libro de los Hechos narra los encuentros de los pastores líderes y la necesidad que tienen de ponerse de acuerdo en algunas normas por el bien de todos, el Evangelio coloca a Jesús ofreciendo el regalo de la paz a todos sus discípulos. La paz que compartimos como servidores del Señor nos invita al diálogo a pesar de las diferencias que podamos encontrarnos. Conscientes del regalo del Señor podemos afrontar cualquier contratiempo. La Pascua es una temporada mistagógica en la que todos estamos llamados a aprender a crecer y a madurar. ¿Hemos crecido en prudencia y paciencia? ¿Contribuimos a promover la paz en nuestras comunidades? ¿De qué manera logramos que otros contribuyan a compartir la paz del Señor?

Ascensión del Señor26 o 29 de mayo de 2022Esta solemnidad, celebrada el domingo en muchas partes de la nación y en otras el jueves, retoma para todos los fieles el significado del misterio pascual. En la Primera Lectura y en el Evangelio escuchamos la jornada del Señor resucitado, y en la carta a los Hebreos se palpa con claridad la dimensión de sacri-ficio por el cual Cristo ha logrado nuestra salvación. Cristo va al Padre pero no abandona a sus discípulos; continúa su promesa de acompañarlos y promete el Espíritu Santo para fortalecer el ministerio al que él los ha llamado.

En esta solemnidad, Cristo nos invita a celebrar una vez más la victoria de Dios sobre el miedo y el mal. ¿De qué manera afrontan la cultura de sombras, tales como el miedo, el odio y el racismo, los textos y el significado de esta solemnidad? ¿Cómo puede la victoria del Señor superar la presencia de estas sombras?

VII Domingo de Pascua 29 de mayo de 2022Este último domingo de Pascua presenta claramente el “costo del discipulado”. Jesús ora por sus discípulos y pide porque “todos sean uno”. Todos nos unimos a Jesús día tras día en nues-tra oración al Padre por medio de la liturgia y nos ofrecemos con Jesucristo en el altar para recuperar las fuerzas necesarias y aprender a aceptar su voluntad. Cristo, el principio y fin de todo lo creado, nos invita a caminar juntos y a dejar a un lado nuestras preferencias para servir a nuestros hermanos y hermanas con la luz del Evangelio. Su misericordia siempre nos ampara.

While the Book of Acts tells of the encounters of Church leaders and their need to agree on some rules for the good of all, the Gospel shows us Jesus offering the gift of peace to all his disciples. The peace we share as servants of the Lord invites us to dialogue with one another despite the differences we may encounter. If we are conscious of this gift from the Lord, we can face any difficulty. Easter is a mystagogic season in which we are all called to learn to grow and mature. Have we grown in pru-dence and patience? Do we contribute to promoting peace in our communities? How can we help others contribute to sharing the peace of the Lord?

La Ascensión del Señor5 de mayo de 2016This solemnity, celebrated on Sunday in many parts of the country but also on Thursday in others, once again takes on the meaning of the paschal mystery for all the faithful. In the First Reading and Gospel, we hear about the journey of the risen Lord, and in the letter to the Hebrews we can clearly see the depth of Christ’s sacrifice, through which he obtained our salvation. Christ goes to the Father but does not abandon his disciples; he keeps his promise to accompany them and promises the Holy Spirit will strengthen the ministry he has called them to.

On this solemnity, Christ invites us to once again celebrate God’s victory over fear and evil. How do today’s readings and the meaning of this solemnity confront the shadows in our con-temporary culture, such as fear, hatred, and racism? How can our Lord’s victory overcome the presence of these shadows?

VII Domingo de Pascua8 de mayo de 2016This last Sunday of Easter clearly presents “the cost of dis-cipleship.” Jesus prays for his disciples and asks that “all may be one.” We are all united with Jesus day after day in our prayer to the Father through the liturgy, and we offer ourselves with Christ on the altar to gain the strength we need and learn how to accept his will. Christ, the beginning and end of all creation, invites us to walk together and to cast aside our prejudices so that we may serve our brothers and sisters with the light of the Gospel. His mercy protects us always.

Domingo de Pentecostés: Misa Vespertina de la Vigilia 4 de junio de 2022El tema de esta Misa resalta la promesa que el Señor hiciera al pueblo escogido por medio de los profetas: si guardan la Alianza con Dios, Dios enviará su Espíritu para acompañarlos siempre. Ante la desobediencia continua de la Alianza, el pueblo tuvo hambre y sed. Por ello, Cristo se presenta como aquel que viene a saciar esas necesidades. Esta liturgia destaca nuestra necesidad por la presencia de Dios en Cristo y nuestro anhelo por recibir el regalo del Espíritu Santo.

Es frecuente que esta noche la vigilia se extienda por largo tiempo, en el estilo de la Vigilia Pascual, y que los grupos de oración sean los anfitriones de una vigilia de oración. Conviene que el comité de liturgia haya ofrecido su ayuda para que haya espacios de silencio, de lecturas bíblicas, de peticiones y de testimonios sobre la vida en el Espíritu.

Domingo de Pentecostés: Misal del Día 5 de junio de 2022Hoy la Misa celebra con gozo la presencia del Espíritu en la vida de la comunidad cristiana. El relato conocido de los Hechos describe cómo esa presencia hace que todos los que vivimos la vida del Espíritu entendemos la predicación apos-tólica. La Segunda Lectura destaca que el Espíritu Santo se manifiesta por los dones concedidos en los miembros de la comunidad, y el Evangelio presenta a Jesús asegurándole a sus discípulos que el Espíritu de la verdad les va a fortalecer en el ejercicio de sus dones por el bien de los fieles. Aunque hoy retiramos el cirio pascual de su cercanía al ambón hacia el área bautismal, conviene que la comunidad celebre la Oración de la Tarde (Vísperas) y reflexione con gratitud de qué manera el Espíritu Santo les ha ayudado a crecer y a madurar.

VII Domingo de PascuaThe theme for today’s Mass underscores the Lord’s promise to his chosen people that was shared through the proph-ets: if they keep the Covenant, God will send his Spirit to accompany them always. When the people strayed from the Covenant they experienced hunger and thirst. That is why Christ presents himself as the one who comes to meet our needs. Today’s liturgy points out our need for God in Christ and our longing for the gift of the Holy Spirit.

It is customary for this to be a long liturgy, in the style of the Easter Vigil, and for prayer groups to host a prayer vigil. It would be beneficial for the liturgy committee to offer to help so that there are appropriate moments of silence, Scripture readings, and time for petitions and testimonies on living a life in the Spirit.

Misa del Día15 de mayo de 2016Today’s Mass joyfully celebrates the presence of the Spirit in the life of the Christian community. The well-known narrative from the Book of Acts describes how this presence makes those who live in the Spirit able to understand the preaching of the apostles. The Second Reading points out that the Holy Spirit is manifested through the gifts that are granted to the members of the community, and the Gospel shows Jesus assuring his dis-ciples that the Spirit of truth will strengthen them when they use their gifts for the wellbeing of the faithful. Although we move the paschal candle from near the ambo and to the baptismal area today, it is worthwhile for the community to celebrate Evening Prayer (Vespers) and reflect with gratitude on how the Holy Spirit has helped them grow and mature.

Lourdes Montgomery nació en La Habana y su familia la llevó

a los Estados Unidos cuando tenía cinco años. De pequeña

vivió en Miami, New Jersey y Arkansas; al comenzar el noveno

grado, volvió a Miami, sin poder hablar español y hablando

inglés con el acento del sur. Al referirse al cambio de la cultura

americana a la hispana, la compositora dice: “Esos fueron los

peores años de mi vida. Sentía que no encajaba en ningún lado.

Me tomó dos años adaptarme a la cultura. Ahora, sólo soy

católica, universal”.

Actualmente, es directora de música en la iglesia San Vicente

de Paúl, en Rogers, Arkansas, donde vive con su esposo y sus

hijos. “Siempre me gustó la música”, exclama Montgomery.

“Estudié dos años de piano clásico, música en general, jazz

y piano en Miami-Dade Community College. Durante cuatro

años me dediqué por completo al piano clásico, teoría musical

y composición, en la Universidad de Miami”.

Esta formación musical ha sido la base de su carrera como

compositora, aunque al principio ella no tenía claro que sus

Lourdes Montgomery was born in Havana and moved to the United States when she was five years old. As a little girl, she lived in Miami, New Jersey, and Arkansas. When she was beginning ninth grade, her family moved back to Miami. She couldn’t speak Spanish and spoke English with a Southern accent. When thinking about the change from living in an Anglo culture to a Hispanic one, she says, “Those were the worst years of my life. I felt like I didn’t fit in with anybody. It took me two years to become part of the culture. Now I’m just Catholic, universal.”

Montgomery is currently the music director at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Community in Rogers, Arkansas, where she lives with her husband and children. “I have always loved music,” she says. “For two years, I studied classical piano, music, jazz, and piano at Miami-Dade Community College. For four years, I dedicated myself to classical piano, music theory, and composition at the University of Miami.”

This training has been the foundation of her career even though she didn’t start out planning to be a liturgi-cal composer. “When I first began, the work was just the result of necessity. After I married Michael, I started work-ing in a Catholic school where they gave me the responsi-bility of playing for the liturgy,” she explains. “At first it was just a job but, little by little, the Lord sowed his seed in me. Now I don’t see this as just a music job; it’s a ministry, and without it I would feel incomplete.”

Like many pastoral musicians, Montgomery saw the need for music in Spanish and English for those moments when communities gather for worship. El Triduo Pascual presenta retos para los directores de músi-ca y los demás ministros, no solo porque es el punto álgido del año litúrgico, sino porque no se permite tener múltiples celebraciones en diferentes idiomas. En la semana más sagrada del año, tenemos que ayudar a los fieles a reunirse y participar como una sola comunidad. Nuestra vida de fe se manifiesta de manera especial durante la magnífica celebración del Triduo, lo cual exige una actitud muy pastoral de nosotros.

Existe una nueva realidad demográfica dentro de la parroquia que exige que el personal parroquial haga cambios, de manera que todos los feligreses puedan celebrar como una sola comu-nidad a pesar de las diferencias étnicas y linguísticas que exis-ten. Recomiendo principios básicos que han funcionado. Ante todo, desempéñense con gusto y alegría; que su entusiasmo y convicción sean contagiosos. Luego, hagan una investigación extensa y déjense transformar por la música nueva que vayan descubriendo. Afortunadamente, OCP nos ofrece todo tipo de música útil y bella para todos los niveles. He aquí algunas ideas de cantos que funcionan para el Triduo:

Sin miedo ni incertidumbre, hagamos nuestro mejor esfuerzo y dejemos que Dios haga el resto, permitiendo que él se apodere de la música y nuestro ministerio. La misericordia y el poder de Dios transformarán gente y cambiarán vidas. Hermanos y hermanas: Ubi caritas est vera. Deus ibi est.


Santiago Fernández ha sido músico pastoral por más de treinta años. Es director del minis-terio de música en la parroquia de la Sagrada Familia en Novi, Michigan, y dirige talleres sobre varios temas en todo el país. Ha lanzado cuatro álbumes con OCP. The Paschal Triduum presents challenges for music directors and other ministers, not only because it is the high point of the liturgical year, but also because having multiple celebrations in different languages isn’t permitted. During the most holy week of the year, we must help the faithful come together and participate as one single community. Our faith comes alive in a special way during the magnificent celebration of the Triduum, and this demands a very pastoral approach from us.

There’s a new demographic reality in parishes that demands that parish staff make changes so that all the faithful can cel-ebrate as a single community, despite any ethnic and linguistic differences that may exist. I recommend basic principles that have proven true. Above all, carry out your tasks with pleasure and joy; let your enthusiasm and conviction be contagious. Then, do extensive research and let yourself be transformed by the new music you discover. Luckily, OCP offers all sorts of music for all levels that is useful and beautiful. Here are some ideas of songs that work well for the Triduum:

Without fear of the unknown, let’s give it our best shot and let God do the rest, allowing him to take over the music and our ministry. God’s mercy and power will transform people and change lives. Brothers and sisters: Ubi caritas est vera. Deus ibi est.
