What can you do when a new baby joins thefamily? One of the most important things you cando is try to see the world through the older childseyes. All young children want a parents full at-tention, but when a child has brothers or sisters,
that is just not possible. This can come as a realshock to a first-born child when suddenly con-fronted with a baby sister or brother. It is painfuland frightening for the older child to think that aparents love and attention are now shared withthis newcomer.
Sibling rivalry occurs when children competefor a parents attention. It is normal and often un-avoidable. Here are some things you can do thatmight reduce sibling rivalry:
Avoid surprising a child with a new baby.Early in your pregnancy, tell the child that anew baby is coming. Let the child knowabout the birth and the way you will care forthe baby when it arrives. Invite your child tohelp you with preparations for the new-comer.
When the new baby comes home, older chil-dren need to know they are still special toparents. Plan time just for parent and childto do things together. Keep some wrapped
gifts to give to the older child when the babyreceives presents. Plan enjoyable events justfor the child with a special relative, friend,or babysitter.
Let children talk about jealous and angryfeelings, and assure them that you under-stand and you have enough love for every-one.
Proteja
