Crandall Crab liked to fiddle, a fiddler crab was he! One day, while looking seaward from his burrow on a sand flat in Singapore, Curious Crandall began to imagine what the rest of the world was like. He had seen big ships come and go and he wondered: “What if I hop on? Where would a mighty ocean ship take me?”

The next morning, after a sideways scurry and leap, Curious Crandall found himself floating on a piece of wood drifting next to the largest ocean going ship in the harbor! With a leap and crab claw grab, Crandall Crab hung on!!

¡Genial!

Clinging to the anchor of the big ship was scary, not at all like having warm soft sand beneath his crabby toes. But Crandall Crab was not alone. Barnacles were everywhere! Crandall knew barnacles and crabs are both crustaceans and spoke the same language, so he called out, “Where are we going?” “Panama!” replied one big old barnacle. “Panama?!” said Crandall. “Great!”

The next morning, Curious Crandall turned to the wise barnacle and asked: “What is a transit and how will a transit help me?” “A transit is when a ship crosses Panama from one ocean to the other in the Panama Canal. We will go from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. At one moment, and I will tell you when, we will come close to a beach named Culebra and you must jump, sink and scurry in your fiddler crab way to shore.”

When the time came, he jumped. After a great deal of scurrying, Crandall finally made it to the shore. Crandall was very tired, but his exhaustion didn’t last long…

When he looked, there was a human being right in front of him! He knew that humans often do things that are really bad for fiddler crabs, so Crandall began to scream: “Run for your lives!! It’s a human!!”

The other crabs noticed Crandall and quickly explained. “That is not a dangerous human being, that is Dr. John Christy and he works for the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. We love to watch him work. When he works, he keeps Grackles, our most dangerous predator bird, off the beach. He observes our behaviors. Dr. Christy is a scientist and asks a lot of questions.” Crandall was shocked! “Don’t you see he has a weapon with bird feet?”

When Crandall said the word weapon, one of his new fiddler crab friends said, “Come with me, let’s take a closer look.” This beautiful crab named Carmen, it seemed, was going to be his mentor. She led him closer and closer to Dr. Christy. Carmen had a lot to say. “Dr. Christy is very patient and keeps a clear view of us so he can learn about our homing abilities and our instincts for getting away from crab-eating Grackles. He is so curious; he even invents things like that bird foot wheel to see how we respond to vibrations in the sand that are like those made by a Grackle hunting us.”

Carmen led Crandall near a hooded sand opening and a Grackle. Barely whispering, Carmen pointed to the great big Grackle bird and said, “This is a crab-eating shorebird that we must watch out for. Amazingly, as a female crab, I seldom become bird food because of males like you,” she said. “You use your greatly enlarged claw to signal danger near hooded structures, called bunnuts, that are built in the sand to keep females safe.”

Carmen and Crandall would emerge each day from their burrows to feed by scooping up mouthfuls of sand and scraping off the organic materials. They watched Dr. Christy take notes as they fed. “When I am ready to lay eggs I will look for a male with a burrow with a tall sand hood like yours because I will be able to find it quickly and avoid danger,” said Carmen. “If you wave your mighty claw that will also help me find you.” “Like this?” asked Crandall.

That night in the burrow Carmen and Crandall talked about Singapore and then Panama. They discovered that they were both curious crabs indeed. She said, “Do you know Crandall, one day I heard an oyster talking about a place called the Chesapeake Bay.” Then she said, “Perhaps we could travel together.”

Comenzó a gritar,—¡SI! ¡VAMOS JUNTOS!

Crandall could not believe what Carmen was saying. He began to shout, “YES! YES…LET’S GO TOGETHER! Together we can be curious, brave, strong, scurry, worry and hurry to our new beach on the Chesapeake Bay!”

¡SORPRENDENTE! – exclamó Crandall.

Crandall looked around and saw Dr. Christy crouching nearby with his bird wheel laying by his feet. He thought Dr. Christy was watching him, so he turned toward Dr. Christy and gave him a wave. For a moment, he thought Dr. Christy gave a small wave back. “AWESOME!”

Ships in the canal were getting ready to transit. Crandall knew he could find a ship at anchor and help Carmen grab on with him. “I know there are fiddler crabs all around the world,” he thought. With a wave of his claw, and at just the right moment, Carmen and he would scoot quickly down the beach and scurry in a hurry to find a ship headed to, who knows where, some place exciting for sure…maybe even the Chesapeake Bay.
