International Conference on Advanced Materials Energy & Environ-ment Sustainability (ICAMEES, Dec 2018)
A two days International Conference on Advanced Materials, Energy and Environmental Sustainability (ICAMEES-
2018) was organized by Department of Chemistry and Department of Physics at Bidholi Campus during 14-15 De-
cember, 2018. The event was jointly sponsored by SERB-India, CSIR-India, and Namami Gange; also supported by
USERC-Dehradun. The conference was aimed to overcome and respond the challenges and opportunities on advanced
materials, energy harvesting, energy storage, environmental sustainability, earth sciences and green technology.
The conference was attended by more than 300 participants including 4 plenary talks, 120 oral/invited talks, and more
than 100 poster presentations, comprising of international participants from 18 countries. Prof. Prashant V Kamat,
John A. Zahm Professor of Science, Notre Dame University, USA was the chief-guest of the conference. Prof. Rajen-
dra Dobhal, Director General, Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST) was the guest of hon-
or. Conference inaugural was accomplished in the presence of Dr. S. J. Chopra, Chancellor; Dr. Deependra Kumar
Jha, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sanjeev Kumar, Associate Dean, Applied Science & Humanities, Dr. Shailey Singhal
(Convener-ICAMEES), Dr Piyush Dua (Convener-ICAMEES), including the speakers from Germany, Switzerland,
Sweden and Spain. The inaugural session was followed by 2 plenary talks including Prof. P. V. Kamat and Prof.
Wolfgang H. Binder, Research Director, Martin Luther University, Germany. Prof. Kamat talked on next generation
photovoltaics with semiconductor nano structures. Prof. Binder emphasized on chemical designing of self- healing
materials. The talks were preceded by invited and oral talk and poster sessions by researchers from foreign universi-
ties, IITs, CSIR labs and Central/ State universities.
On the second day of the conference, there were two plenary talks. Prof. Katsuaki Suganuma, Osaka university, Japan
emphasized on the synthesis of silver nano/sub- micron materials and their applications for energy conversion devices.
The other talk was delivered by Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Uppsala University, Sweden. This was followed by invited and
oral talk sessions delivered by experts from national and international universities / laboratories, where invitees laid
stress on advanced materials, energy harvesting sources, energy storage, environmental sustainability and green tech-
nology.

The valedictory session: was flagged by Prof. Sanjeev Kumar wherein best talk and poster presentation
awards were distributed amongst participants. The occasion was also graced by Shri Prabhat Raj ji, Technical
Advisor, Namami Gange Program where he explained the twin objectives of effective abatement of pollution,
conservation and rejuvenation of national river Ganga. The participants took oath to pledge for the cleanliness
of river Ganga. The conference was widely appreciated by dignitaries and delegates for providing a platform
for exchange of research ideas and innovations. The entire event was a thought provoking venture aimed at
sustainable research with beneficial outcomes for future generations.
Organizing team extends its sincere gratitude to the Dr. SJ Chopra, Chancellor; Dr. Deependra Kumar Jha,
Vice-Chancellor; Dr. Veena Dutta, Registrar for their motivation while organizing the conference. We are
highly obliged with the suggestions and keen interest given by Dr. Kamal Bansal. Dr. SK Gupta, Distinguished
Prof., Dept. of Chemical Engineering deserves special thank for making us able to approach a personality like
Prof. Kamat. Dr. Suresh Kumar, Dr. Piyush Kuchhal and Dr. Sanjeev Singh were the visionary eyes to the
conference. We thank our admin, IT, finance, pantry and all the departments, who supported us to make the
conference a grand success.

Invited Talk: Research Perspectives on extracting Kinetic Hydro Power - Dr. Ashish Karan
Dr. Ashish Karan delivered an invited lecture cum research seminar on the topic “Research Perspectives on
extracting Kinetic Hydro Power” at ONGC Energy Center, New Delhi on 6th Feb 2019. The talk began with a
brief introduction of UPES given by Chancellor, Dr. S J Chopra. Then, Dr. Karn led the ONGC technical experts
into a brief overview on his prior and current research in the area of hydropower. This was followed by a brain-
storming discussion on two case-studies on kinetic hydropower generation. In particular, Dr. Karn touched upon
two areas of potential research that can be taken up in collaboration with ONGC Energy Center. First, the issue of
water quality enhancement in storage type hydros was taken up and the development of “zero energy aerators”
was suggested. Secondly, novel technologies for extracting kinetic hydro power from the tailraces/ canals/ rivers
etc. was suggested. The ONGC technical community has expressed a keen interest in collaborating with us on the
development of these novel technologies.

PhD Student Accolades
Pradhuman Singh, PhD Student -The Gold Medal Winner in 25 mtrs open sight Category in the Indian crossbow shooting team to emerge as overall winners in the Ist Asian Crossbow Shooting Championship at Koh Samui, Thailand. While Crossbow shooting is recognized by the Olympic Committee, it is yet to en-ter the Olympics as the sporting equipment is not al-lowed for civilian use in several countries due to its dual nature of usage as a highly lethal and silent weap-on. This award signifies the achievement of research scholar at UPES who, besides being a full time corpo-rate executive, also excelled in a sport which requires tremendous amount of physical strength and dexterity.
