SYNOPSIS OF THE MOVIE• Two faiths, two empires, two rulers - colliding in 1588. Papist Spain

wants to bring down the heretic Elizabeth.• Philip is building an armada but needs a rationale to attack.• With covert intrigue, Spain sets a trap for the Queen using her

cousin Mary Stuart as a pawn who is under house arrest. • The trap springs, and the armada sets sail, to rendezvous with

French ground forces and to attack. • During these months, the Virgin Queen falls in love with Walter

Raleigh, keeping him close to court and away from the sea and America.

The Monarch• Queen Elizabeth 1 was the

monarch in the Elizabethan Era and made all the ultimate decisions during Elizabethan Era.

• The Monarch is the one who make laws and rule the country, have power over states and church.

• By disobeying the Queen, it was considered as against the law and the Queen also decided the life or death over people during the era.

The Privy CouncilElizabeth first council consist only 19 members

• was responsible for the general administration of the country. • depended on who Elizabeth wanted on it, but as some of the nobles of her

realm had a lot of money and influence in the places that they lived, Elizabeth had to make sure that the most powerful men in her country had their interests represented.

• Involved in governmental areas such as religion, military matters, Queens security, economics and welfare of the people.

• ROLE: advice the Queen when she needed advice.• The councils can never agree on matters and so Elizabeth listen to all and

had to decide what to do• The council did not do their works by themselves but hand a lot of it to the

secretaries

Elizabethan Cloths• Very signifcant, and even have laws!• “ The Elizabethan Sumptuary Clothing Laws” enforced by the Queen

herself in Greenwich on June 1574. • Stated colors and type of cloths• Purpose is to control behaviour and to ensure that a specific class

structure was maintained. • The penalties for violating the laws: could be harsh-fines, the loss of

property, title and even life.

THE UPPER CLASS CLOTHES• The brightest colours demanded

a higher price tag and were only available to the upper class.

• Expensive materials which is velvet, furs, silks, lace, cottons, taffeta and satin.

• Purple and gold clothing was a sign of royalty.

• High collars and jewellery.
