    CONCEPT

The majestic work combines a modern sensibility with themes derived fromtraditional architecture in harmonium way. The tradition and mythological beliefsof the country is conceived in the design in the form of Navgraha mandal, theHindu pattern of nine squares within a square which describes the universe andnine planets (some of them mythic).

The nine grahas of the Navgraha mandal are surya, Chandra, kuja (mangala),Buddha, curve, sukha, shani, rahu and ketu. Each compartment of square isdedicated to one god. The basic concept lies in the depiction of whole M.P. statewithin one building which is highest political representation of M.P. hencerepresents by Navgraha mandal.

The whole composition is enclosed by a wall that defines its exterior formlike a circular inner city- a model of the city of Baghdad. This approach hasgenerated an interesting roofs cape and skylines, too often missing incontemporary architecture, the use of gateways and domes and a tower todevelop the imagery of this landmark complex is very much in the tradition

of the harmonic order found in the traditional architecture of islam

    The Navgraha mandal is complimented

by a number of other features which in

turn represents the state and the

building. The form of the biggest

    assembly chamber (the Vidhan Sabha)

was from the great Buddhist stupa at

Sanchi. The plan is a series of garden

    within gardens, with the administrative

offices defining a pattern of nine

    compartments.

    FORM

The Vidhan Bhavan is a huge building, coveringan area of more than 32,000 sq. meters of builtspace.

The whole building presents as extremelypleasing vision of powerful curves and straight

    vertical and horizontal lines.

Charles Correa has developed a deepunderstanding of the Vedic principles ofarchitecture, from which has emerged an extraordinary synthesis of the totally traditional withthe totally modern, The Kund", which isritualistically dedicated to Surya and which iscentral to both ancient and medieval architecturein India, is almost a signature of Charles Correaand, therefore, the main entrance to the VidhanBhavan is through the Kund area.
