17 de septiembre de 2013 Señor Economista Rafael Correa Presidente República del Ecuador Estimado Señor Presidente, Como académicos preocupados y autores de muchos países, estamos escribiendo para apoyar la iniciativa del Ecuador de no extraer petróleo del Yasuní-ITT. Como miles de otros ciudadanos del mundo, miramos esta iniciativa como un paso pionero en la lucha internacional por una civilización pospetrolera. Nos ha inspirado la determinación de los ciudadanos ecuatorianos que están rejuveneciendo la iniciativa ante su decisión de abandonarla. En este sentido, estamos extremadamente preocupados de que su gobierno esté reprimiendo las voces de la mayoría de los ecuatorianos que continúan apoyando la propuesta Yasuní. Entendemos que se podría estar bloqueando la posibilidad de que haya una consulta popular sobre esta cuestión, que la libertad de expresión estaría siendo coartada, y que el ejercicio del derecho de los estudiantes de disentir está siendo amenazado con la expulsión de sus colegios. Continuaremos siguiendo el debate en Ecuador con la esperanza de que una solución en democracia a este tema pueda ser encontrada, y que la propuesta de dejar el petróleo en el subsuelo en el ITT, así como el respeto de los derechos de los pueblos indígenas, no muera. Como académicos preocupados y autores de muchos países, estamos escribiendo para apoyar la iniciativa del Ecuador de no extraer petróleo del Yasuní-ITT.
