All the preceding information is factual.
John is a good student, he studies a lot, and he gets good grades.
1. All verbs you have learned so far are in the indicative mood. The indicative
mood is used to express actions that actually do, did, or will take place. The
indicative is used to express real events.Juan es un alumno bueno.
Estudia mucho.
Recibe buenas notas.
Capítulo 113 of 48
2. You are now going to learn the subjunctive mood. The subjunctive is used
to express something that is not necessarily factual or real. It expresses things that might happen. Compare the following.
The first sentence tells you that Juan studies a lot and gets good grades. The information is factual, and for this reason you use the indicative.
Juan estudia mucho y recibe buenas notas.
Los padres de Juan quieren que él estudie mucho y que reciba buenas notas.
Capítulo 114 of 48
Los padres de Juan quieren que él estudie mucho y que reciba buenas notas.
Juan estudia mucho y recibe buenas notas.
The second sentence states that Juan’s parents want him to study a lot and get good grades, but that doesn’t mean that Juan will actually do it even though his parents want him to. The second sentence tells what may happen. It does not present facts, and for this reason you must use the subjunctive in the clause that depends upon quieren. Such a clause is called a dependent clause.
Los padres de Juan quieren que él estudie mucho y que reciba buenas notas.

3. To form the present tense of the subjunctive of regular verbs, you drop the o ending of the yo form of the present indicative. This is also true for verbs that have an irregular form in the present tense of the indicative. Add e endings to all -ar verbs and a endings to all -er and -ir verbs.

Capítulo 117 of 48
5. The following are the only verbs that do not follow the regular pattern for the formation of the present subjunctive.

(no) prepare usted (no) preparen ustedes
(no) lea usted (no) lea ustedes
(no) sirva usted (no) sirvan ustedes
(no) haga usted (no) hagan ustedes
(no) salga usted (no) salgan ustedes
(no) conduzca usted (no) conduzcan ustedes
(no) vaya usted (no) vayan ustedes
(no) sea usted (no) sean ustedes
1. The formal commands (usted, ustedes), both affirmative and negative, use the subjunctive form of the verb.
Capítulo 120 of 48
AFFIRMATIVE NEGATIVE
Háblele.
Démelo.
Levántense.
No le hable usted.
No me lo dé usted.
No se levanten ustedes.
2. You have already learned that object pronouns can be attached to an infinitive or gerund or come before the helping verb. In the case of commands, the object pronouns must be added to the affirmative command, as you already know from the tú commands. They must come before the negative command.
Capítulo 121 of 48
Capítulo 122 of 48
1. The negative tú or informal command uses the tú form of the verb in the subjunctive.
No hables más.
No comas más.
No sirvas más.
No salgas.
No vayas.
No conduzcas.
Capítulo 123 of 48
2. As with the formal commands, object pronouns are added to the affirmative command and come before the negative command.
Háblame.
Dímelo.
No me hables.

Capítulo 141 of 48
